After 8 days at Sea Level, I hit up this close by hike to get a few feet of AEG. There were about 700' more on this one hike, than 8 days in Fla. A cool 48 degrees to start, 52 to finish.

a nice clockwise lasso loop out on the Preserve today. Temp was delightful with a slight breeze. Trail is in good shape. I kicked off some rocks and cleared some branch debris. The climb up Ridgeback went well. Saw no one on the backside of the loop. Joe's Leprachaun snake spook scared the Irish right out of me; especially when I'm listening to a podcast and can't quite discern the sound initially.

Mother Nature had her paintbrush out; always enjoy that. Not many folks out hiking or biking. I probably saw more bikers. No lizards or anything.

WATCH: 4.37 mi, 2:29-3:51PM, 132 bpm/161 max (40% Zone 5 max, 39% Zone 4 anaerobic, 20% Zone 3 aerobic) burning 557 calories, 1686-2086 elevation. A lovely 73.3 with 24% humidity, gusts at 180mph from the south (I mean 18 mph).

Wasn't motivated enough to drive any further, but had to take advantage of the perfect weather. A light crowd out, mixed MTB'ers and hikers. Some Fraleys to the west and northeast.

A lasso of Apache Wash, Badger Brawl, Cliff Walk and esplanade.

I knew there would be no flowers, so I was "hunting" for saguaro. There's some nice ones, but not as many as I expected. Not many barrel cactus, hedgehog or silver cholla. Buckhorn cholla was common though. Lots of shrubbery. Some palo verde, though the only decent sitting shade was on the west side of Cave Creek. Finally saw my only flower right next to my SUV as I finished.

Other than wash crossings, this loop was basically flat. (The 304 ft. of gain is mostly the 150 ft. difference between Dove Valley Rd. and Carefree Hwy. Although there is no prominence, you can easily see all the major terrain features to the north and south.

You can chop two miles off the loop by taking the official shortcut along the powerline. Not a thrilling hike, so unless you arre a completist, take the shortcut.

57 when I started; a toasty 83 when I finished.

Since we have our Thanksgiving Picnic Potluck on Friday and the Cranberry Conserve is made, I got to hike today. It was beautiful out there. I saw about 1/2 dozen hikers and bike riders and a few dogs plus about two dozen quail. Also saw an aircraft flying north to south which seemed odd for out there. I feel like I'm getting my hiking legs back, so that's good. Realized on the way I had misnamed one of my Paris videos (so I have to re-record it), but soon forgot about that until near the end of the hike.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING to my fellow HAZers. My fellow Camino Pilgrims exchanged greetings this morning via What's App so that was fun.

WATCH 4.37 miles, 1:33-2:58PM, 136 bpm/173 max, 596 calories, 1758-2211 elevation. Temp 69.8, sunny with some nice little cumulus in the distance, 37% humidity.

7am start and the air was thick w/smoke. Probably the Range Fire, SE of the valley. It was either less noticeable or I was used to it at the finish.

Quite a few bikers and hikers out. Many starting in the 92 degree temps I finished in.

Just enough of a breeze to help cool you and to get the stinknet wafting through the air.

Brittlebush, Stinknet and Foxtail are the main players now. A few poppies, lupine, owl clover and scorpionweed are hanging on. A light crowd because of a late start.

Things are starting to dry out.

There are still patches of poppies, lupine, Dichelostemma capitatum, owl clover, desert chicory, scorpionweed and rock daisy.
In abundance are the brittle bush and stinknet.
The foxtails will be ripe and ready for sock collection soon.
The fiddleneck have played their last song for the year.

You couldn't ask for nicer weather.

Mission accomplished. Sad to say, the north owl hasn't seem to come back for the second year in a row. The south owl was in residence but I didn't see any young 'uns yet.

It was a nice day for the checkup. The temp was a little warm to start but when the sun went behind the clouds, it was just right. I thot I had walked by the intersection from Apache Wash so backtracked only to realize I hadn't walked by it. Part of the reason is I couldn't see my normal landmark, the tuner fork saguaruo which has passed away :lone: . On the Esplanade Trail, before arriving to where that saguaro normally stood I took a closer picture of the ground cover I couldn't ID last Sunday that I think is Woolly Plantain. I also grabbed some photos of some other flora including Owl Clover, Desert Hyacinth, Christmas Cholla and a few other different kinds of Cholla.

I did get buzzed as I headed northbound. Thankfully I didn't over react like I have a tendency to do. It was in the grass and I couldn't really see it. I passed by additional flora including Owl Clover which was the star of the day. The condo saguaro looks good and once again I missed the first owl (south) and realized it when I saw this one saguaro that is my landmark for the north owl. I had seen a few bike riders up to this point. I walked over to where her nest was and circled the saguaro. I saw no evidence of her. I noticed one of the saguaro arms had broken off so perhaps that nest is not usable anymore.

I headed back about 1/2 mile where the south owl was and I could first see her ears. I circled around and took her photo :) . The breeze had picked up when I hiked southbound so I truly enjoyed that. I tried to stay clear of the taller grass alongside the trail so I wouldn't get buzzed again. I didn't see any hikers on the Esplanade Trail. And now it was just a matter of getting back to the Trailhead and finishing off with a trip up Apache Vista. My legs were a little sore but that was mainly from my two workouts this week after being off ten days from being sick.

I made my way up the normally easy Sidewinder Trail which has Lupine and Scorpionweed on both sides. I remembered that Ambika said in order to get a decent picture of meadow-like flowers you need to zoom a little so I tried that. Sometimes successful, other times, not so much. The lighting needed to be filtered to get the ideal shot. As I topped out on Sidewinder on the east side I was serenaded by the coytoes again, just like last Sunday, so I stopped to listen and record.

At the intersection of Apache Vista Trail I sat on a rock for a few minutes before heading up. Not much in the way of flora on the way up other than miniature poppies and some lupine, but quite a few blooming Brittlebush.

The temperature continued to be lovely as I made my way back and along the Sidewinder Trail. Very little flora where last year there was so much. Glad I did all that filming last year and it's nice just to be able to hike this year. This time I felt my watch stop so I fired up my phone to continue tracking my hike. There was some photography going on as I got nearer the TH, including with horses. I noticed the stormy weather I had seen to the north was now getting closer and I'll be darned if it didn't start to sprinkle. In fact, it would rain on my way home.

I enjoyed my Huck It which I was really looking forward to for about two miles. I watched the weather and photographed some of it as I was leaving the TH lot.

WATCH 2:39PM start (watch died, phone said 5:27PM done) burned about 1200 calories. 1746-2094 elevation. 141bpm/176 max. Temp was 75.1 and 25% humidity with partly cloudy skies.

After Kelly punished me on the Papago "Fitness" trail, I needed a leg stretcher. This fit the bill. With a later morning start, there were few people out. Temps reached a blazing 70 degrees towards the finish.

Decided to stop here for a quick hike before getting groceries at the Safeway up on Cave Creek Road. It was a little warmer than I anticipated so instead of Ridgeback, I did Apache Vista. I was also a little sore from my Body Works, Body Pump and Get Strong gym classes this past week; that doesn't happen very often so I must have been working hard.

Mother Nature was bedazzling the sky with whispy/swirly clouds. It was fabulous every which way you looked. Some of the Brittlebush is leafing out but it does look dry out here. I probably saw a dozen hikers and a few bike riders plus three small lizards. The tread is in great shape so that's why I like hitting this trail.

Traffic was heavy on Cave Creek Road. It's only going to get worse as some new housing developments appear to be going in.

WATCH 2:11-3:03, 2.61 miles, 135 avg bpm. Temp 73.3, sunny with a breeze depending on which direction you were hiking. For some reason my phone isn't giving me the "hiking" review in my Samsung Health app.
