Early morning hike at Piestewa. It’s been awhile since I’ve done the alternate summit trail. Not a big difference from the main route, just a little more isolated on the first .25 miles. Didn’t see anyone on the alternate, but encountered over 120 on the main path. Disappointed in my time. Took 38 minutes to reach the top and I was trying to push it. The years are catching up. Also, disappointed in missing the morning ceremonial “drum greet”. I could hear the drums as I neared the top, but the show was over by the time I got to the top.

Morning hike on Piestewa. It’s been a couple of years since starting with the Alternate Summit trail. Got on the trail around 5:30am. Even without a headlamp or moon, the city lights are still enough to light the way to the top. I took a slow, but steady pace to the top. Surprised that I “only” encountered 25 hikers; almost all of them heading down. When I reached the top, there was only 3 other hikers. Hung out for about 30 minutes to enjoy a somewhat clouded sunrise. Nice colors, though not quite as striking as I’d hoped. In that 30 minutes, I only had about 10 other hikers disturb my commune. No drummer to greet the sunrise. It’s been awhile, maybe he’s not doing his morning ceremony any longer. He might have canceled on the account of wind. Boy, it was windy!! When I got back to the car it looked like I stuck my finger in a light socket. No complaints. I take that kind of “charge” anytime. :D Great hike with great weather!

Note to self: do not attempt to hike Piestewa on the weekends in the winter. I got to the TH around 6am - still dark out - to find the trail already abuzz with activity. There were clouds drifting above with the smell of rain, but no indication of it having rained. Went up in the darkness with nothing more than the city lights and the occasional passing headlight. Shared the peak with about 10 others; everyone claiming their little bit of real estate. Didn’t hang around for the sunrise. As I was heading down a Native American was steaming up the the mountain with a giant drum strapped to his back. I think he was trying to make it to the top to greet the sunrise....pretty sure he was going to make it. On the way down I was able to appreciate all the damage that has occurred to the trail in the last 6 months. Holy :pk: . The number of solid, well defined side trails that have developed since I’ve last done this peak is amazing! I get it. The amount of traffic at 6-7am was astounding! with people streaming around each other on their way up and down. I had briefly thought of hitting the peak twice, but dealing with the crowds once was more than enough. I realize (and believe) that hiking with or without a mask should be a personal choice. But on that trail with that kind of flow it should almost be a requirement. dh

wanted to do Camelback, but Cholla side was closed off and Echo was restricted. So went with my backup and did Piestewa via the Alternate Route. Evident that I am not doing elevation frequently enough....34 minutes up. Nice to revisit this peak. Encountered about 50 hikers. Not too bad for a Saturday. Temps were nice. No wildlife.

There was drama afoot in the preserves, not that I care. Just some rescue nonsense and they had the gate closed as a result so I had to park in the neighborhood. Lots of places just off the main access road that allow parking, so it seemed silly that some parked next to "no parking" signs.

Crowded, cold, and some nice snow capped mountains visible. Mostly the Matazals, but also the eastern Superstitions. It still feels the same.

Took a short little hike with my 8 year old. He has hiked before but not too far so we took it easy with this one. Parked in the overflow lot and headed up the summit trail. He was ready to leave when we reached the Alternative Summit Trail junction so we took that way back down for a little added distance. Going to get him out more so we can get his endurance up. Moving at his pace made for a leisurely stroll for me. He was excited to see a little gopher on the side of the mountain. Excellent weather!

Included SoMo curious on the jungle @ Kiwanis

Holy schnikes. The difference in 2 weeks is what I expected in 6. With the exception on brittlebush and a few little flowers the jungle has dried out. Asian mustard among others have a dried crackle passing by since they encroached the lower trail. Which has the unmistakable shriek of a rattlesnake. Then came the real mccoy. A little rattler tucked under one of the steps. This lil' guy was shaking up a storm. Put a waypoint in RS and built a cairn so I'd be aware on the return.

One of the nature sounds on RS split statics is a rattler. Gets me unexpected on occasion. Just knew RS/Rattle-Snake gods were gonna mess with me. Luckily the trail was busier upon return. While I've stepped on a couple & over a few, they don't usually haunt me. Figured I'd share the love on this guy hiding under a step on the trail to make your next peaceful hike a joy. On the brightside I have a nice new copyright free audio clip.

Sean babbled up 4400 ft climbing** on his recent 44th birthday.
Yawn, nod, smile.
Wrapped like an eskimo @ 40 degrees he overheated by the horserail and waited.

Amazing you can almost see Mexico from the best peak on planet earth.

Scorpionweed lines a few good stretches on the lower to mid Alt Summit Trail. Easy to verify [ Scorpionweed ] is NOT [ Wild Heliotrope ] , just snap the stem!

After work hike. Parked at the main TH and then took the Alternate Trail around and up to reconnect with the main trail. Nice easy pace. Weather didn't seem too bad. And apparently other people thought so as well. Encountered over 30 hikers and 1 jogger ( :app: ) while I was there. A bit more than I anticipated for a late summer day. Saw a rabbit and a chipmunk as well.

Had an appointment at the dealer for my suv nearby so made my way to the trail head for Piestewa summit trail, intending to hike the circumference or freedom trail.Cloudy day but did not see rain in the am forecast for Phoenix, started about 0630 to the summit first. Already a fair number of folks heading up to take advantage of the cooler day but not extremely busy. On the way down turned on the 302 trail, it’s been a few years since hiking this area so not too familiar with these trails. About the time the trail starts turning from east to south east it started to rain. Initially pleasant with the way the desert smells after rain ,did note it was a cold rain with some ominous clouds nearby. Sure enough as the trail is climbing up, the thunder lightning and hail began, became cold and wet pretty quickly only lasted about 15 minutes though. Not being familiar with these trails I inadvertently experienced the Perl Charles trail, kept deluding myself that it looked familiar, but believe now had never been on it before, had only seen 5 other hikers since starting the 302 trail ,with the rain now stopped fortunately met a single bike rider who advised me I was heading north on this trail and should be heading south to return to the parking lot.Nearby there was remnants of an abandoned trail heading south that connected back with the 302 trail , so still able to make my appointment and had dry clothes with me.

2 weeks in a row and I'm back on Squaw Peak. Put a twist on my hike this morning and parked in the lot just outside the gate and went up and back on the Alt Summit Trail, didn't see a soul in either direction. Taking the Alt Summit Trail adds a little bit of distance and elevation gain. Good sized crowd on the top this morning.

Just as I walked into the park they opened up the newly paved road. It almost took a half year for this electrical and sewage project. Hope they do the parking expansion in the next year or two.

Evening hike starting from the parking by the gate. I started with the Alternate Summit Trail and headed up. Saw Joe & Dave on the ascent. Hey guys good seeing you! After a quick stop on the summit I headed down and connected onto the circumference completing the loop. I was near the Hopi Parking and came upon a small wedding party taking pics right on the trail. It was for a gay wedding (two brides) with loads of photographers. They had a table with 6-8 settings for a fancy dinner. I wonder if it was for a magazine or something. It was very staged.
