Wifey and I escaped the heat, hiked Bigelow and part of Kellogg looking for a nice hammock spot to chill.

On the way back we passed a lady who had attempted to take her cat for a hike. The cat wasn’t really up for it, so it got a ride in a kitty backpack instead.

Up to Mount Lemmon again because it is too hot in the valley. We hiked the Butterfly Trail and returned via Mount Bigelow. Started at 0630 at the Palisades Ranger Station Trail head. The first 1.5 miles of the trail were in good condition and had some maintenance done recently. The next mile to Novio Creek/Spring was really overgrown. The trail was still easy to follow though. Once near Novio Spring the trail has been cleared of brush. At Novio Creek Crossing (had a really light flow) we headed upstream to theF-86 crash site. The engine is starting to show it's age or people are starting to pick at it. Headed on our way to the west end of the butterfly trail along the Catalina Highway. Parts of this trail were maintained and other section overgrown but still easy to follow. This was a hot section of the hike as the east facing slopes are in direct sunlight.

Once at Catalina Highway we took a lunch break then headed along the highway to the Bear Wallow dirt road and headed up to Bigelow. Easy walking along the road to Bigelow. Lots of campers along this section. The weather was overcast with rain to the east over the San Pedro Valley. Really cooled it off for us though.

Along the Butterfly Trail are two trail junctions, one the Crystal Spring Trail that I have been on a few years back but the other is the Davis Spring Trail. Has anyone been on that trail and is it still there. Also curious about the Knagge Creek Trail.

Headed to Mt. Lemmon to get away from the Phoenix heat. We started at the Sunset trailhead and headed southeast along the trail there. The trail doesn't appear to be named, but is very wide, well-maintained, and popular with mountain bikers. It runs parallel to Mt. Lemmon Highway, passes under the road through a large culvert, then continues up a gradual ascent (500 feet AEG over 1 mile), eventually ending at Mt. Bigelow Road. We dodged a few mountain bikers along the way as they flew down the hill. We headed along Mt. Bigelow Road to the radio towers at the peak, then cut over to Butterfly Trail.

Butterfly Trail lived up to its name during the first 2 miles, with billions of butterflies flitting around. There were a lot of burned trees scattered around, but the trail was overgrown with abundant green plants as well, consisting of ferns and thorny plants that were up to 6 feet high and covered the trail at times. The thorns were completely avoidable with a little juking and spinning, which slowed us down a bit. The temp was 78°, but the high humidity made us sweat a little as we pushed through the vegetation. It felt like a jungle at times. There were some beautiful views along the way of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Novio spring was just a trickle, but was nice and peaceful down there. We forgot to look for the plane crash.

Heading up out of the valley was fairly steep at first, but this part was easier because we didn't have to push through all the vegetation and dodge all the thorns. Eventually the incline decreased a little, but there were a few overgrown areas. It was a pretty steady ascent from there back to Mt. Lemmon Highway. It began raining as we headed up - rained twice, 5-10 minutes each time, light rain, felt nice. We skipped Butterfly Peak.

The most exciting part of the day was after we got back to Tucson and settled down at a sports bar to eat. The thunderstorms rolled in, the wind picked up, and trees started crashing down in the parking lot, crushing one vehicle. The power went out, so they couldn't make our orders. We headed out onto the road to try to outrun the storm, literally dodging falling (and fallen) trees in the street as we drove down River Road through Tucson. Once we got north of Marana, things settled down.

Overall a good day. The initial trail was pleasant but the mountain bikers kept us on our toes. We didn't see a single person on the Butterfly Trail, just a lot of butterflies (and birds, and squirrels). The Butterfly Trail is quite overgrown in some areas, with half ferns and half thorny plants, but we barely got a scratch. The burned area with the abundance of green plants is sad and vibrant at the same time. It was under 80° and was mostly shaded, but we definitely felt the humidity.

Originally planned a big group hiking from Mt. Lemmon to Sabino Canyon, but most of those wanting to do it canceled, so I chose this instead. I had Green Mountain on my bucket list for a while as one of Warren's 100 Classic Arizona Hikes, and honestly you can do a full Lemmon to the bottom hike through the trail system that is fairly close to Mt. Lemmon Highway (Aspen-Marshall Gulch-Sunset-Butterfly-Kellogg-Incinerator Ridge-Green-Bug Spring-Bug Spring Connector-Soldier, or instead of Soldier, -Sycamore Canyon-Bear Canyon to Sabino).

We decided to start at Bigelow Trailhead and took Bigelow to Kellogg, then Incinerator Ridge to Green to Bug Spring to Bug Spring Trailhead. We started out in the lower 50s and ended up around 90 degrees. On the way down we hit Leopold Point and the basically nonexistent trail up to Green Mountain Summit.

Loved the wildlife today. On the drive up Lemmon Highway I saw a gila monster on the side of the road. At the Bigelow Trailhead there were a couple of mule deer, and on the trail we ran into several bluejays, a couple of horned toads, a hummingbird (surprised to see that one buzzing around!) and several different kinds of squirrels, including one with long, furry ears.

One of our team had to pull off at the little parking turnoff across the road from Bear Canyon picnic area, but the other two of us made it to the bottom.

Hadn’t been backpacking in a while so decided to get back in shape with a partial load and a nice steep climb.

Wasn’t sure from my maps how to connect to incinerator ridge from upper green mountain so wound up going off trail; figured out the trail on the way back.

On the way up, passed a campsite on the ridge where somebody partially chopped down a live tree, probably with a hatchet. On the way back it had fallen. It was quite heartbreaking to see. Other campsites close to the trail had broken glass. Near Bigelow, someone had taken a dump in the middle of the trail. :x

It’s a great trail with some amazing views, but the overuse by people with less than stellar trail ethics is a bit much.

Bear Wallow-Bigelow loop. Used parts of the Bear Wallow road and social trails for a nice late afternoon meander up to Mount Bigelow. Forest was damp and green, a few wildflowers in places, clean air for distant views, and some raspberries. Every campsite was taken. Wished I was camping too.

Had a few hours on the mountain so hiked Bigelow to Butterfly and descended to the crash site, which is well documented elsewhere. Wanted to see Novio Falls but ran out of time. I asked a passing hiker who had come from the direction of the falls if the falls were running and they said, “What falls?” So it was just as well I didn’t push it.

Seemed like there was more graffiti on the plane wreckage which made me sad. The drainage where the crash site is located had cool flowing water.

I have not been on the Butterfly Trail on Mount Lemmon for a few years and thought we would try it post fire. This trail has changed quite a bit since the early 70’s, The thick old growth forest has given way to panoramic views to the east and north of Mount Lemmon. Still a scenic hike though. I always thought this was one of those leisurely hikes but once again I was reminded this trail has a lot of elevation gain, especially if you add the Mount the Bigelow Loop. Couple of turkeys spotted on the ridge just before entering Novio Canyon. We stopped off to see the F86 plane crash that occurred in 1957. Pretty much the same as it was when I visited a few years back.

The fire burned sections along this trail but not all. The vegetation is coming back nicely although the pine fir forest will take some time. Large aspen groves are coming in nicely. There was water in the spring and creek at the Plane crash and on down past Novio Spring and the falls. Lots of ferns coming in below Butterfly Peak. The trail is in excellent condition having had recent maintenance done on it. The road walk up to the towers on Bigelow was pleasant with some great views to the north down what I will call Novio Canyon. Great hiking weather although a bit windy on the ridges.

Lunch break hike while working on Mount Lemmon. Hiked from Bear Wallow almost to the base of Bigelow’s communication towers before approaching thunder turned me around. Tropical storm Nora’s remnants had arrived and they weren’t messing around. Ragged clouds were replaced by fog enveloping the mountain tops. Saw a turkey. Ran into a coworker randomly at a campsite. Booked it back to my truck as the rain arrived and close lightning strikes too. Drove over to the ski area afterward to hotspot and work inside my truck during the rain.

Started at San Pedro Vista a little before 6 am and it already seemed warm to me. First time hiking along this route since the Bighorn Fire so I was interested to see how it fared. Better than I thought it might’ve. Some regrowth coming in on the silver oaks and locust. Lots of low-lying smoke in the eastern sky. Saw a couple of deer grazing among the ferns along Kellogg Trail. Walked up to the summit of Mount Bigelow and then continued on along Bear Wallow Road, one of my favorites in the area. Lots of car campers barely stirring along the road. Went down the Bear Wallow drainage route a bit and noticed an old logging road I’d never seen before. Followed that to its end at the observatory, then returned via the same route. Downright toasty coming down Barnum Rock. Dry shirt and cold water at my truck, then an undesired drive down to the furnace flatlands and home.

after (yet another) long night at work, got up as early as i could stand to try and beat the heat at least a little.

happy with the effort given the severe lack of sleep. still got warm on the low points but not unbearable. there are little stretches and spots that i rather like on butterfly. the fern jungle is over my head now and i was surprised to see some early flowers.

ran the bigelow segment better than anticipated so that was good

I was looking for a hike to do in some cooler weather, so I decided to drive down to Tucson and hike on the Butterfly Trail. While the temperatures were cooler than the VOS, it was in the 80's for most of this hike.

This is a tale of 2 hikes:
1) The portion from the Butterfly TH to the towers at the top of Mount Bigelow: 6.1 miles and an elevation gain of 2,200'
2) The portion from the top of Mount Bigelow back to the Butterfly TH: 3.0 miles and 150' of elevation gain

The first portion follows the Butterfly Trail to where it meets up with the Bigelow Trail, about 1/4 mile from the Bigelow Summit. Along the way we made a detour at Novio Spring to see the plane crash. This was somewhat of a strenuous trail -- the trail was narrow and rocky in many places, and had some fairly steep uphill climbs. It was a warm morning and there was a fair amount of sun exposure, so it was not an easy hike.

The second portion initially followed the Bear Wallow/Bigelow Road(Road 34) down from the summit. After going about a mile or so, we took an unmarked trail down to the right. This was a nice trail to hike on -- there were lots of very large trees and no sun exposure at all. We came back down to the Bear Wallow Rd, and this trail crossed the road and continued alongside the road. This trail has a tunnel that goes underneath the road up to Mount Lemmon at mm 22 (at the intersection of Bear Wallow Rd and the road up to Mount Lemmon). We went underneath the tunnel and followed the trail back to the Sunset TH, where Sykes Knob Rd intersects with the General Hitchcock Hwy. From there it is about a 100' walk along the Highway back to the Butterfly TH. This portion of the hike was very easy(it was mostly downhill on some easy-to-hike trails), and was most welcome on a warm day after doing the first portion of this hike.

If I do this hike again, I would do it in the fall. To make it a more strenuous hike, you could hike from the Butterfly TH to Mount Bigelow and back. This would be a hike of right at 12 miles with an elevation gain of 3,600'-3,700'.

Many people seem to do this hike as a one-way hike with a car shuttle, but given how short and easy the second portion of this hike is, I would rather do this loop and not have to hassle with a car shuttle.

There were some nice views on the hike, particularly on the Butterfly Fly on the way to Bigelow, where you could see the mountains off to the east. Once you got near the Bigelow summit, there were some real nice views to the south.

I thought that this hike was OK, although it was nothing really great. If I lived in Tucson I would hike it again...but for me it is a 7.5 hour RT drive to do the hike, which is a bit much for this hike. There are a number of other Tucson area hikes that I like better and that are easier to get to, so I doubt if I will do this one again.
