A tale of two trails, err, I mean, one trail and essentially a route. Now I know why Sunrise Peak from 145th Street has over 5.4k activities recorded on Allfails and the 136th Street Spur less than 200. If you like plodding through sand, climbing over boulders, getting coated with Brittlebush pollen and dodging agitated vipers with very limited views of bougie McMansions, then the 136th Street Spur will be up one's alley. I'd repeat the Sunrise Trail again, the 136th Street Spur, not so much.

This was sort of a strange loop but I wanted to do some geocaching in the area. There aren't geocaches in the preserve, but there are some that take you into the preserve where you answer questions along the way to gain the coordinates of the geocache.

I started at the overflow parking for the Sunrise Peak trailhead. Climbed up to the summit of Sunrise Peak, then headed down to the Lost Dog trailhead. I wasn't paying close enough attention and ended up heading down the trail to the east of Lost Dog, so that added a bit, as I needed to answer some questions in the two nature loops at the trailhead. From there, I went off to find one of the caches off of Columbine Dr, then followed the path along 124th to E Via Linda, where I headed east to just past 136th. From there I went into the wash (I do not recommend going into the wash from Via Linda)

There were many caches along the wash that I searched for. After the last cache, there is a scramble up the wash for a ways. That was fun and I enjoyed working my way up it. Finally, you leave the wash onto a spur trail that takes you up to the Sunrise Peak trail. The best flowers of the day were along this trail.

Once back on the Sunrise Peak trail, I just hoofed it back to the trailhead. I was getting tired and I was just backtracking trail I had been on earlier. I skipped going up to the summit on the way back as there is a side trail making it easy to skip.

I've done Sunrise many times, many ways, but never this way. I started at the main parking lot for Sunrise and hiked up to the top and back down the other side via the 136th St spur trail, back to the neighborhood and back to the car. One big loop. It was very nice except the road-walking part. Not too hot, not too crowded. I took a break on top and watched and listened to all the building going on near Adero and they were very busy. I remember years ago there was nothing around here, I wish it would slow down. Anyway a great hike!

We arrived at the Sunrise peak trailhead around 6pm and the main parking lot was full. Most normal people would just head over to the backup parking lot right down the road, but I wasn’t thrilled with the prospect of sharing the peak with all of those people. James had done it from 136th Street prior and had said it would be longer and more difficult, but that there would be no people there. So off we went to that trailhead where the adventure began. The hike starts off in a crazy sandy wash that goes on for a while. So. Much. Sand. If the sand isn’t bad enough, next up you’re just full on bouldering and scrambling in a canyon. Umm, I didn’t realize I would be doing a 3 points of contact type thing in the Mcdowells. It seemed super unnecessary that this is how they created the trail :? After the bouldering section, you’re suddenly on a steep uphill section with jagged rocks all over the “trail” - so fun. All the uphill in 100 degrees was not pleasant and I was getting tired and moving slow. James is an alien hiking beast who seemed unfazed by the heat/climb while I was dying and I may have told him I was going to murder him if he was videoing me while I was struggling... oops! :sorry: The sunset was uneventful, but we’d been excited to get a view of the full moon so that was motivating. The climb brings you to the backside of sunrise peak and we didn’t even summit since we had so long left to go. We did take a quick break and enjoy the full moon plus the city lights, and it was very pretty. With about 1.5 miles left on the sunrise peak trail, we encountered a baby rattlesnake who was NOT happy we were out there hiking. James almost stepped on it, so we’d already pissed it off, then it didn’t want to move much off the trail for us. I was definitely not comfortable passing it since the trail was narrow, steep and slippery (gravel type rocks) in that section. :scared: We ended up bushwhacking off trail climbing over boulders to avoid it. Yikes! I was using my headlamp and could see so many scorpions on the trail. I know they are there, but I really prefer not seeing them so much. :pout: So we continue hiking down the peak in the dark for a while, but oh no the hike is not done yet. Since we hadn’t set up a shuttle vehicle, we had a couple of miles left of road walking until we reached the car. Although I was happy to be on flat ground, the extra miles were still pretty tiring. We finally reached the car around 9:45pm and it was still 97 degrees at the time. I don’t do well in the heat, so I was really glad that I’d thrown a frozen Gatorade in my backpack, since it was definitely needed. If you are crazy enough to want to try out this route, do yourself a favor a set up a shuttle vehicle to avoid the road walking at the end. But if you enjoy torturing yourself and avoiding crowds, go ahead and give this route a try. Maybe wait till it cools down a bit though ](*,)

I like this alternate way up Sunrise Peak! More challenging and less crowded!
The trailhead only allows about 5 cars, but it's rarely a problem.
Having hiked on the main trail to the peak before, I wanted to try something different. It's fun!
You follow the wash out of the neighborhood before connecting to the main Sunrise trail coming from Lost Dog.
There are a few rough spots to climb, but not too bad. You clamber over the boulders in the wash. And pass under a couple bridges with neat designs on the walls. I say if you want a little something different, give this trail a try!

I have not been out to Sunrise this year, so this seemed a great alternative to my heavy doses of SOMO and the Phoenix Mountain Preserves lately. Pulled in to the 136th street TH about 4:30 to get my hike started. I did not like the look of the automatic closing gate and 'closed at sunset', so I backtracked and parked in the almost deserted shopping center at 136th & Via Linda. I started up the wash, this is definitely the best trail on the Sunrise end of the park. Made it up to the summit in pretty good time, and saw my first other hikers of the day. I took a nice break up top to enjoy the views and then made my way down the 145th side. Saw about a dozen hikers coming down this way, nice easy decent too. I took the Equestrian spur from the 145th TH and followed that around to the dirt 'trail' that follows along Via Linda and took that back to the van. Absolutely fantastic sunset tonight, so much color in the clouds!

Record warmth means that any desert hiker has got to get out there! I opted for a quick hike that wouldn't leave me too sore for a softball doubleheader a day later. I pushed hard on the way up, no breaks, and got to the top just as some others were leaving it all to me. Great views and visibility, I particularly like looking south from the top. En route back down I took the other peak trail to get more of a view to the north. There looks like a saguaro growing area and a service road of some sort, also fun to check out. I elected to run the whole way down, much of it gingerly as there are plenty of jagged rocks sticking up on the trail. Quick up, quick down, beautiful drive back there too.

Armed with the knowledge from the most recent post regarding this hike(CldinAZ), I knew that taking off from this TH was not an option. Thinking to solve this conundrum, I parked on Desert Cove just west of 138th St. near a staired access to a wash. I was hoping this would tie into the 136th trail. But within 10 minutes I realized this was not going to happen as the wash continued to turn east as it approached Sunrise Peak. As it turned out this worked in my favor. On previous visits when I've parked at the 145th St TH I've used the additional parking lot and hiked in 1/4 of a mile along the wash to get to the Sunrise TH. When I've entered the wash from this additional parking area there was a trail sign in the wash indicating "Wash Trail" to the south. I always wondered where that Wash trail went. Now I know. It is about 1.1 miles from the this parking area to the Desert Cove St. This trail does not appear to get a lot of use, though it was very easy to negotiate (though one of he bridge underpassings was a little overgrown). There were no trail signs along the wash except at the 145th entry point. Anyway, I took the 145th trail up to Sunrise Peak. Spoke briefly with a young woman during the ascent who had gotten stopped by a snake crossing. Not sure what kind it was. It was a little guy. Less than 8 inches in length. It could have been a baby rattler, without the rattle. From the peak I went down the west side and took the 136th back, towards my car. Glad I did not go up 136th. There are some major rock negotiating that would need to be done. I had gone up this trail once before and had gotten myself in one of the most precarious situations I've ever been in, while trying to hike this rocky section. Still, the rock formations are pretty cool. I ended up gong past the 136th TH, which was still fenced off due to construction (they are building a booster pump). It's unfortunate, because right after that the wash opens up and you are exposed to the backyards of the homes on either side of the wash. I believe I exited the wash at Via Linda, like CldinAZ and street walked back to my car on Desert Cove. The temps felt great at 6am. In addition to the snake, I saw an owl, coyote, squirrel, horny toad, several chipmunks and quite few lizards.

Got my butt out of bed and was at trailhead just after 6am. This loop has been on my to do list for a while. I used Sunrise Peak 136th to 145th Loop GPS Route by @BiFrost, but I started at 145th St and went counter clockwise down to 136th St.

I really enjoyed the top end of the 136th St Spur, coming down through the canyon with all the boulders, although it was slow going with many big drops in the canyon wash. It actually felt cool in there. Many spots you would never guess there were big homes right above the canyon wall if you did not know better. However I never got onto 136th St - where BiFrost's route shows an exit from wash, there was new construction blocking the path completely (pic at photoset). So I just continued down the wash to E Via Linda Rd. I wonder if soon the Spur will be closed to hikers because eventually there will be no entry/exit.

The last mile on Via Linda back to the 145th trailhead was worst part of my hike because it was getting hot and humid, not nice on sidewalk. But other then that I enjoyed this loop. Next time I would do it clockwise up the canyon per BiFrost's route, that would be easier rather then picking way down through some of the boulder drops.

9L and I met up with Not Julia, DB and Hiker Dan for my first night hike of the year, whoo!
Ran into a javelina before we were even out of the wash...

Pretty sure it came running out of the drainage tube with some Goompas chasing after it!!! The Goompas never made an appearance but the Javelina posed for a few photos...darn thing refused to let me pin a "Hello my name is Fred" sticker on it...

Brisk hike up the hill, we regrouped at the major saddles, made it to the top in under an hour and breezed down the other side at what felt eerily like a jog to me!!

Great to see everyone again, I suspect this will happen again soon. Whoo!

Nice late afternoon hike. We started around 5:30pm and made our way up the 136th St wash. This is a fun section that I always enjoy. From there we reached the Sunrise Trail and made our way to the peak. After a short break, we made our way down to the 145th St TH and then took the equestrian trail back to the cars. It was a good evening.

Great to see/hike with everyone again! Saw my first javelina while hiking (I've seen them while off-roading before, but never while walking).. it popped right out of a drainage pipe in front of us! Pretty cool. Good night hike, as usual.. looking forward to the next one.

Night hike with Chumley. I really enjoy the 136th St Spur trail especially at night. The rest of the hike was enjoyable as well and the views of the city lights are very cool. We completed a loop and that was that. It was a good evening on the trails.

Nice quick hike with Johnboy, I expected the peak to be a bit more difficult, got my heart rate up but it was a breeze! If I lived in the area (and not in BFE) I'd do something like that daily!

Quick evening hike with Hippy. We parked in a plaza a short distance from the 136th Trailhead. We made our way up the wash and on to Sunrise Peak. From there we headed down towards the 145th Trailhead. Back on pavement we followed the road back to the jeep. Nice evening hike.
