Matt gave me several big options, and this one looked the likely to kill me. Parked at the Sabino Visitor Center at 0600 and made our way over to the Phoneline Trail. Easy uphill on that one, mostly in the shade. Continued up Sabino.

Once we arrived at the intersection with West Fork and East Fork, the fun began. We turned left onto West Fork, and immediately had to cross the water. The shallowest point we could find was about knee level. Oh well, I guess dry feet won’t be happening on this hike. Got across the water, but spent the next five miles continually crossing water. The largest crossing was thigh deep for me, and was a matter of gripping every tree possible to get across. The water felt good though, because it was warming up.

Had lunch at the junction with Cathedral Rock Trail. Prime rib makes for an excellent hiking lunch. I think we passed five AZT backpackers thru this section, including the human version of Ned Flanders, which provided some comic relief.

A slog up Cathedral Rock trail, but the views made up for it. Some recent trail work. Small amount of snow on the upper reaches. Once over the saddle, it was a long descent. Tons of water in Esperero, but all were crossable (barely) by rock hopping. Seemed like the descent took forever, but was easy. Finished up around 1815, making for a full day of hiking. Great loop, lots of fun, thank you Matt for the invitation!

This was another one of those insane hikes that Linda lures me into. This time, she told me that there was a "Beef Lovers BBQ" happening at the campsites where the West Fork & Cathedral trails intersect. As you may well have guessed, I fell for it and there was no BBQ when we arrived there. Well, now that we'd come this far, I wasn't going to turn back. We had covered a lot of ground and maybe as much water to get here. The scenery heading up the West Fork is top notch at all times, and in all directions. With the recent rains/snow, the water crossings were as high as could be crossed by most, and kept our feet wet for a solid 5 miles to the Cathedral campsites.

With unhappy feet and disappointed with the whole BBQ ruse thing, I dug out the single, stale, half crumbled saltine cracker that I had been saving for such an occasion and ate that. Meanwhile Linda adoringly dined on a slab prime rib while we rested before the remainder of our adventure.

The beginning of the end came all too quickly, and too did the heat of the day as we dawned our still mushy, wet footwear and started up the Cathedral Trail. Had it not been for a single trail runner arriving at just the right moment, Linda was about to toss me into the canyon for sniveling too much. Eventually, we got over the saddle and were on the homerun - shade, waterfalls, streams, a breeze and above all, elevation loss. Somehow, that didn't seem to deaden the misery of mushy footwear though, and I made that fact know the rest of the trip - just ask Linda.

Anyway, We got out of there alive and saw some pretty cool things along the way. Thanks Linda for driving all the way down for this one. It was one to remember, even if there was again no BBQ.

Set out from the Visitor Center parking lot on Bear Canyon Trail briefly to the Esperero Trail over the flats through the Cactus Picnic Area and then past Rattlesnake and Bird Canyons to the beginning of the uphill workout. A number of Sunday hikers on the initial section but we were soon on our own. A nice climb up past the Mansion-on-the-Hill (slightly annoying signage) to the saddle at about mile 4. Amazing spot to catch your breath and a view. A bit more uphill in some great landscape and then drop down into the wash and cross the creek in a really fine oak forest. Some fresh bear scat on the trail! No bear but saw a few whitetail deer. Lots of creek crossings but someone has done a great job of marking them all with cairns. The trail is easy to follow, much better than our previous trips up here a few years back. We started seeing and hearing water in the creek about a mile below the falls. They were gorgeous with a generous flow splashing merrily in this little bit of paradise. We met a few more people on the way out, got trail yakking and it was almost dark when we got back to the lot. Another fine day in Catalina country

Started at Sabino Canyon overflow parking lot. Bridal Falls is 5.6 Miles from there. Hike up took about 5.5 hrs starting at 1:30pm was 92 degrees and the 4 of us used up all 3 litters of water. Had to start late due to schedules. The climb up was quit a challenge. The falls had a tickle coming over the edge so we were able to filter water. Camped for the night and headed back down about 9 am the next day. The hike down we can into 1 scary rattler and it took us 3 hrs. The trail was perfect and marked with stones when it gets iffy of which way to go.

Love this hike. Good workout, beautiful scenery along the way, and fantastic destination. Our group of 6 got a fairly late start and it was pretty warm toward the end, but mostly downhill then. None of us have our Arizona heat tolerance built up but no one ran out of water. The hike is much as I remembered it, but there are maybe 8-10 downed trees across the trail in the portion along the final wash; all have easy walkarounds. We didn't see anyone past Cardiac Gap. Water is running at several points and lots of splash at the falls. If there's a nicer place for lunch, I'm not sure where it is.

I'm glad we did it yesterday, even though the parking lot was nearly full when we got there at 9:00 a.m. Can't imagine what it's like today.

Started out with the intention of going all the way to Bridal Veil Falls, only made it as far as the gap. I read the posted description of this hike prior to heading out and it said the first couple of miles were relatively flat. Um, it pretty much an all up hill hike. You don't realize it because other than a few steep areas it pretty gradual until you get to the end. It was more noticeable when hiking back down. (Killed my knee on this one.) Even though we did not make our goal of the falls, the Gap was nice and cool with a very pleasant breeze. There was a nice little waterfall across from the gap coming down Esperero wash that was flowing pretty good. I would like to know more history of the area as on that last leg up there is an over hang to the east that has some rocks that look like the were cut into squares; definitely man made looking. It took us four hours to climb up, but then I do lollygag around and take pictures, and three hours coming down. That is not only due to playing around taking pictures, but my knee was on fire with every step. Oh, and I spent some time taking a few pictures (with a telephoto lens) of a rattler that gave fair warning when I got to close in the Bird Canyon wash.

Excellent hike with 5 of my hiking buds. We had planned something higher on the mtn but stayed lower since it was so cool. I love the section past Cardiac Gap. Great weather. The falls were more of a high drip, but outstanding nonetheless. Highlight was watching a hummer dart among the drips while we were eating lunch. A little warm coming down to canyon level but a good breeze. Trail's in great shape. Saw only one person past the gap.
