Jason and I set off again to knock out the Red Tank Loop by starting from Whitlow Canyon. About 4 miles in, at the Coffee Flats/Dutchman junction, he was having some troubles breathing/coughing. We decided to turn around at this point.

Whitlow Canyon is a nice little hike up to Coffee Flats. A couple of pools near Deerhorn Springs, but signs of recent water all around. Coffee Flats is the usual gentle up and down towards the Dutchman Trail. The damages from the fire are still clear to see. Lots of saguaro skeletons and deadman standing cacti. There has been some regrowth and the wild flowers are starting to bloom. Lots of Fairy Dusters and a few poppies and brittlebush blooms too.

Once Jason gets well from his recent bout with COVID, we will try to get the longer Red Tanks Loop in.

One the way back, we expected to see nobody, but we came across some folks panning for gold, a group of Baja Bug drivers and a fellow with a metal detector looking for treasure as well. Who know Whitlow Canyon was a “hot spot”??

Met my bud Tim on the trail for another day trek in the Superstitions. The main plans were to see the aftermath of fires (and regrowth) in mostly familiar areas. Originally we were headed down to Milk Ranch in Whitlow Canyon. The area had been torched so bad that it will be saved it for another day. Also you can practically drive right up to it with the right vehicle. After looking for (again) the source of Deerhorn Spring (didn’t find it), we turned up Coffee Flat Canyon. Saw not less than 3 different family groups of Javelina, which is a lot in my experience.

Coffee Flat canyon is interesting and a worthy future side trip. Randolph Canyon was bone dry as expected and this makes it a very different trip from the usual water excursion. Looked into Carlson’s cave at Dripping Spring. Pretty much the same, but always worth climbing up to.

The windmills at Reeds appear about the same as well. The best part of the trip was back up to Abe Reid’s Camp. (Reeds Camp). Abe Reid was a Dutch hunter and miner who started the mine in the mid 1930s. USPS TOPO got the name wrong, and his name was definitely Reid. He spent decades looking for silver in Whitlow, but never found it. He died in 1958. Tom Kollenborn wrote a nice chronicle about him if you like history. The camp looks about the same as when I first went there and even about the same as Kollenborn’s photo from the 1980s. There is rusty stuff everywhere. We were going to take his 60 year old road but decided to bushwhack instead. It’s more interesting and never know what will be found off of the beaten path.

The off trail and mine explore really slowed the pace, but we were enjoying the experience. Headed back through the devastated Barkley Basin to be greeted by an amazing sunset at the Peralta lot. It was a good day.

Our plan for the day was to climb Coffee Flat Mountain by going off the Whiskey Spring trail and out along a ridge. Loose, rocky stuff on the slopes and giant boulder piles on top made it slow going. By the time we got to the end of the ridge near the base of the mountain we realized we would probably run out of daylight if we tried to go up and over. But since there were some cool formations down in the canyon below us, we decided to go down instead.

Steep and loose again!! We both practiced some dance moves along the way! Luckily there were some game trails that got us through some thick spots, but sometimes we just had to bust through. We were rewarded with seeing the tallest saguaro either of us had ever seen. It was really unbelievable! We will go back to measure because it may be a record.

What a day! This one had some tough off-trail but turned out to be so worth it! We will make another attempt at Plan A once the days get longer.

I had some time and wanted to check out a route up Coffee Flat Mtn. The plan was to hike into Reeds Camp and find a route up on to Coffee Flat Ridge and hike back toward the Dutchman trail. The plan worked but as usual there were a few things I would change on the route. On the hike in I ran into the guy I last saw when it snowed on us coming out of the Supes. [ photoset ] That was a good day. Reeds camp is pretty interesting. JohnLP posted some good photos in the past but I have a few to add. The off trail hiking isn't too bad going up or across but there are a lot of washes and some bouldering to slow progress a bit. The ridgeline is up and down so while fairly open it's still a good workout. There are many small caves/alcoves and I saw a raptor nest and maybe some mountain lion scat. :scared: Nobody was home but sometimes these remote caves may not be worth it. After looking at my track at home I found I was fairly close to the summit but that wasn't the plan for today. The exit route is good so this one should happen in December.

Didn't do the entire loop- just bagged peak 3748 above the Whiskey Springs trail. Definitely a worthy side trip if anyone is hiking Whiskey Springs Trail or even the Bluff Springs Loop. It won't tack on too much time and the views are unique. On the hike back I climbed Miners Needle up to the notch where the bolted routes start. More amazing views from up there. Peering down the sheer cliff on the south side of Miner's Needle is dizzying. From the saddle next to Miner's Needle, I considered eliminating the slog through miners canyon and around the needle by short-cutting down a canyon and into Barkley Basin, but my desire to not bushwhack won, and I returned the way I hiked in. Fun day, if not a bit hot.

Fun hike! Hiked out of Peralta, directly into the sun on the Dutchman Trail at 7:30 AM. Up Miner's Summit to Whiskey Springs trail, departed Whiskey Springs trail right before it drops into Whiskey Springs Canyon. Headed right and up to the ridge. Hiking the ridge was fun. Lots of boulders and very, very warm. Not much shade. Hiked the ridge over to the top of Whitlow Canyon, dropped steeply into Whitlow Canyon and followed it out to the Coffee Flats Trail. Found a nice spot about a mile shy of the Coffee Flats/Dutchman junction, planned out a couple photos for the evening, and plopped myself under a mesquite tree for a nap. Napped for a couple hours then woke up and milled about until the sun strated getting low. Took some photos and hiked back in the dark. What a great Sunday! No people, either; everybody was working on getting nice and drunk before the big game I suppose.
