Second hike of the 5-summit Phoenix Summit Challenge to Bay peaks 2 and 3. Took the loop counterclockwise starting on the Sidewinder Trail. First summit was Apache Vista. After that we returned to Sidewinder until we reached Ridgeback Trail which we took to the Ridgeback Overlook. After a short pause at the overlook we continued on down, and one of the hill took Ocotillo Trail to complete the loop.

A nice cool morning hike, but by the end it was starting to warm up. Gonna be a warm afternoon for the last two summits.

I wrote this several weeks ago but am just now getting around to posting a few of my wildflower hikes: I thought it was time to do an Owl Check-Up so I put together a route where I could also do my usual hike out there.  I was hoping there was a way to cross over from Esplanade to Apache Wash on the northside but I couldn't see anything. So I would have to do an out and back to the Apache Loop and then crossover to Sidewinder.  It was the perfect day for my Samsung as it likes that filtered sun.  It was very crowded around the trailhead and on the way to the Esplanade.  There were several bike riders including some newbies.  I was having trouble seeing my screen and I fiddled with it for a while but gave up and continued, hoping that the filming would turn out okay.

The Esplanade Trail was so incredibly green, and with the light and the cactus jetting out it made for the usual fabulous scenery but amped up.  I almost felt like I was on a golf course in some areas.  The trail was in decent enough shape except for the dry mud tracks caused by the bike riders.  I did try to turn my camera off more than on, but you all know how that goes for me.  I had good distant views including toward the snowed Mazzies and Four Peaks, so my Pany got a little workout too.  I did come across some large brightly bulbed Christmas Cholla :) that run along the drainage that disects this area.  There were bits of poppies off and on at the beginning and as I neared the south Owl area.  And even a few miniature Owl Clover were raising their blooms to say hello.  I sure hope they are going to get bigger and multiply.

I spotted the owl nest fairly quickly.  This is the one I usually miss on the first pass.  She was up and laying in her nest. Based on the pictures I thought she looked a little miserable. She did keep her eyes on me as I circled to get a better angle.  I continued the next half-mile to check on the north owl.  The birds seemed pretty vocal today as well.  No one was home at the north nest so I retraced my steps.

My hope was not to film on the way back to the Apache Wash Trail.  I did succeed in no filming but I did end up taking several shots from the desert floor up.  Those turned out pretty cool.  I encountered three hikers at the junction of the Apache Wash Loop and wouldn't see anyone again until I got to the Sidewinder.    It's always interesting hiking near the wash as it's quite lush; especially now.  I took the first crossover to the other side of the Apache Wash Loop and headed north for a bit to hook up with the connector to the Sidewinder.

The sun was now mostly gone and the wind had picked up so I started to get really cold.  I wish I had brot my extra shirt that I could easily tie around my waist; I just didn't expect it to get cold (I was wearing a sleeveless top).  I continued to film a little but tried to avoid the housing area that seems to be creeping closer on this side.  I started up the Sidewinder Trail but was hiking to the wind. I was just getting chilled so I knew I had to turn back and head for the Trailhead.  I was so mad at myself for not having that shirt as I was having such a good hike and feeling so strong.  With the wind at my back I headed east and then south on the Apache Connector Trail.  Soon I would be seeing lots of poppies, mostly cold like me.  However, it was still a nice display of fluted poppy heads and then a very nice mix of Lupine and some Bladderpod.  I took some more photos and movies until the wildflowers stopped.

On the Ocotillo Trail were the usual nice views with the green desert floor accentuating the cactus.  And per usual, I started running into more hikers but they had jackets or long sleeve shirts on.  I took the trail to the TH and all of a sudden my phone screen went completely dark. I couldn't even turn off my phone.  I was able to somehow get to the brightness screen and slid right so that I could see it again. There must be some button I push to cause that as it's happened before.  This is the second hike I've been too chilled to drink my beer.  Oh well, it was an awesome hike, nonetheless.  Lesson learned.

I think you will enjoy these videos, mostly because seeing how green our desert floor was a real treat :D ! I did narrate a lot; I never know if that's good or bad :-k .

Had hoped to do Ridgeback first but it was too humid so I hiked north toward the Sidewinder and west to the Ridgeback connector and then back to Apache Wash and up the Sidewinder to Apache Vista, finishing clockwise at the TH. There was a little breeze depending when I hiked east or south. Saw about 1/2 dozen hikers, two bike riders and at least a dozen lizards, one rabbit. Ocotillos are bulky with green leaves and most of the bushery is very green as well. Trails were in good shape and it looks like they've been brushed in certain areas.

Best of all, after the hike, I got to drink my Huck IT beer (Big Sky Brewing out of Bozeman) [ photo ] and it is so good, much better than my old standby, Wild Huckleberry Lager.

First time I've used the Auto Link on HAZ, pretty cool! :)

Stayed local today. Saw my first desert tortoise of the year. He actually did a 4 mile rehab hike with me. Great catching up with Denny. After dropping him off I did the 2 minor peaks here and completed the loop. We started at 6 and it was 78 and busy with MTB'ers, Hikers, and runners.
I finished up before 10am to a much emptier lot and 97 degrees.

Trailhead parking was pretty full. Clockwise: Well I got 'er done altho I bypassed both peaks; just didn't feel well. Quite a few folks and bike riders but not bad; I don't mind so much as I think it keeps the rattlers alert  . Saw a few lizards and some blooms on the saguaros.

My last hike here in the Valley as I'm heading north to Idaho and Montana for a couple weeks. I hope to see if I can do a hike near Cottonwood ID and Cascade MT and maybe something out at the ranch for sure. Daytime highs are going to be in the 50s and 60s in both places. So you all need to hold down the fort while I'm away :) .

Starting temp 71.5 Sunny and 38% humidity (it did feel warmer at the start than the end) finishing at 8:57AM therefore, no beer :( (that's what I get for skipping the peaks).

Belated post. Knee was kind of stiff from my previous hike, but wanted to get out for short after work run. Started off from the Apache Wash TH and did a loop of the Ridgeback trail going clockwise. Wanted to jog what I could, but ending up hiking up a part of the Ridgeback :( . Jogged down the backside and onto the Sidewinder and then the Connector. Lost gas on the Apache and ended up alternating between hiking and jogging to get back to the TH. Good to be out, but a disappointing results. Knee was barking at me for a couple of days afterwards. Temps were great…in the 80’s and I had the trails to myself.

I realized it was time for me to do an owl checkup so I planned to actually get up early and go hiking before it got warm.

Anyway, it was slightly breezy with some very slight clouds to match. Hiking on the Esplanade Trail, the views were clear and the creosote was bright. It's easy hiking. There were some runners that passed me by and some bike riders as well. It was Sunday morning, so I expected to see more traffic.

As usual, it seems, I blew by the saguaro that has the first owl. It is off to the right and from this angle is easy to miss. I thot maybe I had and then I saw this giant pool of pink. Yep, I may have missed the Owl but not the Owl Clover :y: . And it wasn't that scrawny, miniature stuff but full blown. Being mindful of snakes, I circled the pink pond, getting every possible picture I could.

I continued on the trail and saw the bent arms of the saguaros to my left so I knew I was near the saguaro that held our second owl mother. There were no babies and her face was all bloody (which I didn't notice until I got home to see the photos). I circled the saguaro to verify if there were any babies. I asked her if she had any babies but I got nothing but a blank stare🦉.

So back I went to see Owl Mother 2. I don't know how I walked by her coming out but it obviously is the angle. I finally saw her and approached to get some photos and see if there was anyone else lingering. Alas, her nest seems empty of little ones unless I just couldn't see them. It seems late for no little ones.

With my initial mission complete I hiked back encountering more hikers and bike riders which would increase in volume as I made my way toward Apache Vista via the Sidewinder Trail. For some reason, I tripped four times on the rest of the hike. The Brittlebush and Creosote were blooming brightly. I was a little tired as I made the peak on the Apache Vista Trail. I hiked back down and to Tonto3 looking forward to my Frozen Cappuccino from Q-Trip.

(I was also trying some new Altra Lone Peak 5 Trail-Running Shoes. My toes didn't like the toe box but it was plenty roomy so I found that odd. As I started hiking, the shoes seem to fit too tight on the top of my foot so I loosened the lacings. The left shoe felt great after that but the right did not so I loosened some more along the whole shoe. That helped a little but I'm still not convinced it's a good fit.)

WATCH: 7.65 miles (high point 1996, low 1688) Avg bpm 128/ max 166 (6% Zone 4 anaerobic, 27% Zone 3 aerobic, 64% Zone 2 weight control burning 1,001 calories) starting at 64.3 degrees/sunny with some light clouds and 23% humidity finishing at 10:41AM and 81 degrees.

Had one last trail to finish off the North Sonoran Area trails on HAZ, Northern Apache Connector. Still trying to hang on to hiking in the afternoons thus a 2PM start.

Hiked counterclockwise:
-first part north on the Apache Wash east side Loop was a tad on the warm side making me think I wouldn't do all I had planned for this afternoon.
-Northern Connector to the other side of Apache Wash, the temperature cooled as the breeze brushed my face for almost the whole rest of the hike. Views here were good on north and south sides.
-didn't see any human hikers once slightly away from the TH until toward the top of Ridgeback Trail, but saw quite a few bike riders.
-groundcover is very green and looks like a mix of grass and potential flowers.
-just like yesterday, something that I would walk by smelled just wonderful but I couldn't pin it down.
-noticed the old road across Apache Wash that must have run alongside the wire fence that still stands; looks like it would have been part of the Dove Valley Road.
-didn't know Wolfberry bushes bloomed but the bees seemed glad of it as they were beesy pollinating them.
-the backlighting made some of the creosote glisten but I couldn't get a good picture to show you.
-this trail tread, for the most part, really spoils you.
-very clear today in all directions.

No after-hike beer since I had one and a half yesterday.

I decided to head out to the Sonoran Preserve and make up a loop to find a few geocaches that have been hidden since I was last out in the area. The trails are mostly flat, wide, with good tread. Basically it's a great place for Mt biking and there was a lot of cyclists enjoying the trails today. There were a couple places where the trail got a bit congested, but it was never an issue for me. As it was Halloween, I saw a few people in costumes. This probably isn't the best area to go if you're interested in AEG but if you're interested in fast miles, then it'll do well.

I actually got started 15 minutes earlier as I managed to get up at 6AM :o , first time I've gotten up that early for a hike in a long time. As I was driving to the TH I saw a thick narrow and low haze to the east and north and then I smelled smoke. I was thinking I may have to change my hike plan but fortunately, I didn't smell it at the TH as it already seemed to be dissipating. Some of the hot air balloons flew right over the Sonoran Parkway so I tried to get some pics. I also got some pics of the balloons to the east before I started my hike and you'll be able to see that haze. Sure was weird.

Well this route wasn't exactly what I had in mind as I actually wanted to do the Apache Vista Peak and then the Apache Wash Loop. Instead I ended up doing the highpoints with Apache Wash.

I was pleased that it was still pretty cool when I started my counterclockwise hike up the Sidewinder Trail altho there was minimal breeze. I climbed up Apache Vista Peak which is a piece of cake for me at this time; guess I should enjoy that feeling. Ridgeback would be the same :) . On my way down I heard a Hang Glider and then I saw it and grabbed some photos, and then another showed up so I was able to get the twofer shots.

After coming off the west side of the Sidewinder I took the Apache Wash Trail north. This was my first time on this trail which really is surprising considering how much I've hiked out here. I really liked this Apache Wash Trail as it goes in and out of the wash as it heads east and then North to join up with either the Apache Wash Loop or a Connector to the Sidewinder which is what I ended up doing. It was then that I decided to do the Ridgeback.

I connected up with the Sidewinder Trail and took it to the junction with the Ridgeback Trail. There was a nice breeze until I started up the side of the mountain. Got to see a couple beautiful horses with their riders. I got up the hill and Ridgeback Overlook Trail peak fairly easily. The two switchback corners are surprisingly long for corners. At the junction with the Ocotillo Trail, there were three columnar saguaros with blooms on their sides so I got some photos.

On my way down I debated going back via the Apache connector and do the Sidewinder east over to the TH. I figured I better take advantage of these temps while I can so I did do the additional mileage but didn't do the Peak. It was a little warmer than I like and I was thinking about that Prickly Pear beer; even though it was before my 9:30 timeline but with another mile or so it would be 9:15 so close enough :D .

WATCH: 7.62 miles. 133 avg BPM, 158 max. 28% in Zone 5, 45% in Zone 4, 24% in Zone 3, 2% in Zone 2 burning 991 calories (Frozen Cappuccino coming my way!). Temp at start 64.3 and 34% humidity (felt that for sure) finishing at 9:14AM.

After work run. From Apache Wash TH took the Sidewinder to the Apache Wash Trail. Took this out to the connector high brought me back to the Sidewinder. Took the Sidewinder back south to the Apache Wash Trail which I took back to the TH. Sounds more confusing than it really was. Saw one trail runner just as I was finishing. Temps were nice. Decent breeze with the occasional cloud. Minimal wildlife: chipmunk and some quail.

Short after work jog. Went out to the Apache Wash TH and did a loop incorporating the Sidewinder-Apache Wash Connector. Went clockwise on the Octillo - Sidewinder - connector - and then back to the TH on the Apache Wash. Weather was great with cloudy skies and mild temperatures. Encountered 6 bikers, but otherwise had the trails to myself. Saw a couple of rabbits, but that was it. The desert looks like it wants to "spring" into Spring but it is going to need a little more help from Mother Nature. No flowers yet.

Kind of random, but I really had the hankering for a night hike, and the Earthiest tagged along too. We headed out to start hiking about 9 pm at the TH, and thankfully the gate was not closed yet so we could park up closer to the start and not have to lug it from the road. Just did a quick hike to the top of Apache Vista to enjoy a tasty beverage or two, and then back down again. We made it off trail before 11 so we were even in compliance. ;) Surprisingly saw one guy mountain biking right as we got to the top. Fun little trip, gotta explore this option more. There was no moon, but with it being a bit overcast there was plenty of light coming off the clouds for us to navigate by, never even needed our headlamps.

Strung together a bunch of SPN trails to create a longer than normal workout. Swung back by the trailhead for lunch under the ramada, changed socks and shoes and took off again. Not much breeze, but intermittent cloud cover helped.

Saw two Western DBacks along the trails in the afternoon. The first was the largest and most polite -- a soft gentlemanly rattle at about 5 feet. The last one was smaller and far more agitated. Gave them both a wide enough berth and pressed on.

Nice day to be on the trails. Now off to soak the dogs. They are certainly tired.

No pressure today from those fleet of foot canal runners. Did a loop incorporating the Sidewinder - Apache Loop Connector. Started from the Apache Wash TH and took the Sidewinder north to the connector trail to the Apache to the inner Apache connector and then the Apache back to the TH. Met one biker, but otherwise had the trail to myself. When I got back to the TH I noticed a green truck with HAZ sticker :)

The dogs and I went for a morning hike. We finished the newer portion of the Apache wash loop, a missed section of the sidewinder trail, all the connecting trails, and a portion of the Esplanade Trail. We saw two Coyotes, plenty of rabbits, ground squirrels and a possible grey fox.

1st trip
Had seen the east end of a new connector trail from the Sonoran Preserve North's little used 14th Street TH. Today's hike was to find and map the new connector plus get in a few miles.

Temps were a just a tad higher than I like but there were cloud shadows now and then and a very nice breeze. Not many folks on the trails. At the Apache Wash TH, we did run into a couple that were mountain biking the area for the first time. They had started at the 7th Ave access point (future developed trailhead). They had followed the Sidewinder thinking it was a loop and that they had to be pretty close to where they started. I consider 7 miles reasonably close, but they didn't seem to feel the same when I helped them find where they were and where they needed to be on the nice big map provided at the TH. Made sure they had enough water and got them headed back via the easier Ocotillo Trail.

Nice easy hike for a lazy Thursday morning.
