Bike -> Run -> Bike. Wanted to do this to kick-off a long weekend of varied activities. Legs have been feeling "off" for a few weeks but this still felt good, especially in the cool morning air. Not many people out on a weekday morning. Did Goldmine -> San Tan -> Moonlight -> Stargazer -> San Tan, Stargazer was a nice add-on to an otherwise short and basic loop.

Bike from home -> park: 4.0 miles, 20 mins
Trail running: 4.4 miles, 48 mins
Bike from park -> home: 4.3 miles, 17 mins
Calories: 1082 8)

Goldmine trailhead now moved about .1 mile to the west , larger with more parking, now at the end of Wagon Wheel. New bike aid station at intersection of Dynamite and San Tan. Park worker reported he’s been seeing lots of snakes this week. No shade out here so hike would be better if temps would drop another 10°. By late morning hardly saw anyone else out here .

Did a counter-clockwise loop starting from the Phillips Rd Trailhead. Started north on the Goldmine, over the saddle and back on the Dynamite and Santan Trails, then took the Hedgehog, Stargazer and Moonlight Trails back to the parking lot. at the saddle on the Goldmine Trail, I went to the top of the peak there, which I had never done before. The other side of the Goldmine is pretty steep and loose in spots. From the saddle it looked like they might be building a new trail that heads north from the Goldmine Trail and goes around the mountain. or maybe it was just an old mining road.

At the Goldmine TH, I walked all the way to the road because when I did the MT here last April, the lot was closed so my GPS tracks didn't overlap. The Dynamite Trail has the best views in this park, I think. and it's a much gentler grade as it climbs up and around the mountain.

Almost chilly early on, then started to feel a little hot by the time I finished. Also a lot of people early on, which cleared out quite a bit towards the end.

Just looking to get some exercise today had discovered the Goldmine Trailhead had reopened , online the hours indicated it opened at 0600, when I arrived the lot was pretty full and the sign there indicated it opened at 0500, wish I had known that ](*,) , FYI the porta potties are MIA. Started up Goldmine Trail which was shaded until just below the peak only about 6 others going up this side and about the same coming up the other side as I descended. Once at the multi trail junction near the park headquarters took the San Tan Trail to the Stargazer Trail then Moonlight and shortly before reacquiring the San Tan Trail this started to feel like a bad idea . Notice a quick onset of mild symptoms of heat exhaustion so stopped at a rare , maybe only, shady spot on the trail which happens to have a picnic table, besides 2 liters of water had also carried a couple of frozen water bottles and I poured what was melted so far on me and my hat. Continued to push on at a slower pace in the now completely deserted and very quiet trails, heck even the lizards know to stop scurrying about when it’s too hot. Finally felt better at least mentally on reaching the Dynamite Trail saddle knowing it was all down from there , repeated the melted cold water on me and the hat and a slight breeze was stirring. Passed a couple of bike riders on this stretch and arrived at the trailhead to find a fire/ EMT vehicle there, not sure why they were there and glad I didn’t need them. Took a couple of hours of hydration to feel “normal”. Looking back not sure why I decided to hike in a shadeless desert with 109° predicted high 🤪 I think the cooler temperature last weekend made me forget how quickly it can get hot on days like this , thought it be fine to finish by 1000, should have heeded the warning at the bottom of this page and planned to finish by 0800.

Determined that Goldmine trailhead is still closed, in fact Skyline Rd. is closed except to local traffic. Since I always start here made the hike seem different for example the home stretch was now the midway point. Parked at the main entrance and started at that end of Goldmine trail. After crossing over Goldmine Mountain I reached the usually busy Goldmine Dynamite junction saw no other hikers , a runner passed by on Dynamite near the San Tan junction. There was a sign also indicating using the Goldmine trail to reach the Goldmine trailhead was a class 2 misdemeanor :scared:. Possibly to deter bike riders trying to enter the park from here.Started a little late about 0600 as the park opens at 0500 , still finished before the oven heats up at 1000. At the beginning several young ladies jogging up Goldmine Trail from the headquarters then less numbers going up to the Goldmine Mountain saddle and peak, then by around 0800 the park had emptied out as all these trails are unshaded. Saw about half dozen bikes and 4 horse riders, no wildlife. Visited the Hermits cemetery and the War Memorial. Took a few pictures but decided not to post as the air quality made for lots of haziness today :( .

Another gorgeous weather day for May so decided on a local hike. Changed up my routine of Goldmine and Dynamite trails with a loop between them and started instead at the park office. Windy and 58° at the start, parking lot was not very busy noticed a couple of horses being saddled. Headed up San Tan trail and then turned down Rock Peak wash trail , appears to be mostly a horse route from Brenner Pass road, , did not go all the way to the trailhead before turning back to San Tan. Was off track in the rock peak area, does not appear too many others get lost up there. Continued on for first time on Malpais trail bumped rating up from a 1 to a 2 due to no bikes on it, 4.1 miles and 75% a wash, nice view looking up at the malpais hills but hiking felt like snow shoeing , can fill your shoes with sand and can burn up some calories on that one. Clouds started to gather to the north , time to head back, Returned via Moonlight, Stargazer trails and then a mini loop to visit the well done Arizona Memorial for those who lost their lives in the Middle East since 9/11. Went by the buddy pond and windmill and then little leaf trail to finish up an enjoyable day. Caution on these trails in hot weather as there is no water , except at the park office, and very little shade.

We wanted a short hike and heard that the wild flowers in San Tans were going so decided to check it out. As usual the desire is to avoid crowds if possible. That's a tall order for this park so close to the big city. We put together the following path:
1. Rock Peak Wash
2. San Tan - Lower East section to Stargazer
3. Stargazer
4. Moonlight Stargazer intersection to San Tan junction
5. San Tan - Lower West section to Rock Peak intersection
6. Rock Peak Wash
Total hike is 7.6 miles.

There wasn't too many people, but this park appears to have become a very popular area for mountain bikers, and the second half of the hike there was a biker about ever 10 minutes.

I think going forward we will reserve this area for weekdays, or night hikes only.
Wild flowers were OK, but it appears we may have missed the peak for this area; Although it appears the Brittle bush are getting ready to put on a show probably in the next couple of weeks.

I haven’t been here for a long time Wanted to get some easy miles.

Lots of families out enjoying the nice weather. It was fun watching the little ones navigating the trails. The operative word for the first couple of miles was patience.

With a few days off, I opted to start my vacation with an "in town" hike. Still a loooonnnnggggg drive from the west side. Be very curious to see what drive time is like, once the 202 is completed. Got on the trail a little after 7 am. Cloudy, with quite a few patches of fog made for a picturesque and chilly beginning. Actually wore a jacket for this run which I seldom do. Wanted to get a loop involving the Stargazer Trail....in on the San Tan - Stargazer - Moonlight - and then CCW on the San Tan to bring it back to the TH. All the trails are marked and easy to follow. Though the markers just have the abbreviated trail names. (I've gotten use to the other city parks where they have the decals that show distances and trail elevations. This transition may not be happening in this preserve). First time on Stargazer. Nice gradual climb, that gets you up the side of a hill, but never comes close to the top. Really come to enjoy the eastern part of the San Tan. It is flat and straight in a couple of spots, that allows for some easy running and it has one climb, from the backside, that really gets me huffing. Saw a biker, hiker and two trail runners. No wildlife. Probably in the low 40's my entire visit. That being said, I was still sweating when I finished :)

San Tan- Stargazer-Moonlight-San Tan-Goldmine-Littleleaf. Nice mixture of Hikers,Joggers, and Mountain bikers. Good to see people enjoying this park. The washes look like they have had some good flow recently. Sandy canvases wiped clean and ready for new critter prints. nice morning out on trail. :D

Few days left on our Maricopa annual pass so took the kids out for a quick morning outing to San Tan MRP. Goldmine trailhead was overflowing at 6am, this easier loop works as well. Direct morning sun and constant bike traffic had both me and the boys on edge. Didn’t bother taking the youngest out of the carrier, no good place for her to play anyways. We did enjoy the portion of Stargazer that plays along the hillside, especially with a few aircraft and paramotors overhead to point out. Saw some horses along Moonlight on the way out, which are always a big hit w/ the boys, even though they didn't get to ride them (this time). Also saw a lot of runners and now they want to start trail-running... Told them that they need to be able to hike three miles nonstop before we started that craziness. Although they did knock out this loop ridiculously fast...
