Started from the main trailhead and did a lasso loop on the Malpais Trail. Lot of traffic early on with people trying to get done before the heat kicks in. Mostly bikers, but also a lot of hikers and trailrunners. Pretty humid, looked like there were monsoon storms not too far away at first. By the end I was pretty soaked. Empty parking lot when I got back.

It cost a total of $17 to obtain 100% Progress of the San Tan Mtn Reg Park - Trails
My synopsis is they aren't worth much more than that. It's also lame that climbing isn't allowed at Owl's Head anymore.

Another nice sunrise hike. Some overcast and lots of humidity. Lots of people out by the time I was done.
A mixture of mountain bikers, runners, hikers, and 1 horseback rider. Nice to get out for a hike!

Headed out shortly after noon and really lucked out, with a nearby stormcloud blocking most of the sun during the outing. First 5 miles was textbook, took San Tan all the way down to Malpais south start, clocked a steady 12' pace and played leapfrog with a biker. Hit the wall while climbing out of the wash, later found out that my heart was between 170-180 for that first hour with the darn heat & humidity combo. Struggle bus from this point on, alternated between walking and running to the end, leg cramps were visibly twitching :sk: Was able to (very slowly) jog from the top of Hedgehog to the parking lot, just in time to drive to kid's school and 30s after they were released.

Trails were in great shape, as usual, no visible washout damage or anything.

Bike / run / bike. Philips TH was very empty when I arrived at 5pm, only 2 cars in the lot. Took Goldmine up to San Tan, then followed San Tan behind the hill in the middle of the park to Hedgehog to loop back. I like running back there, minimal city noise filters back. Only saw one biker along San Tan trail... until I finished Hedgehog, then there were... a hundred bikers? A huge group, lots of kids, had to be an after-school program or club. They were all careful to avoid my sweat-drenched trudge. Trails in good shape, only noticed additional loose sand from recent weather. While it was nice to get off the pavement for the weekly training runs, the humidity & sun bouncing off the hill along San Tan was tough to get through. Oh, and there's a lot of activity along Phillips road, cleared desert and a staging area for trees & cacti planting, likely for one of the many housing projects down here.

I had used my only $5 bill to tip the waitress at the Queen Creek Denny’s where I had breakfast. Then I stuck my spare singles in the VFW donation jar. When I arrived at Rock Peak Wash Trailhead, all I had left was a twenty, and I sure as hell was not going to over-pay the $7 fee. But I would pay, because I’m a good boy. 😇

So, I put $7 of car console change into the parking envelope. But the envelope was too fat for the slot. I reopened the envelope, fed half the coins directly into the slot, dropped the still open envelope in, and was on my way by 8:35 a.m.

I hiked San Tan Mountain Regional Park two months later than in 2020 [ photoset ] , and it paid off in flowers. Not a lot, by any means, but a least some, which keeps my hike videos from being an endless series of trail shots. The first flowers I saw, along Rock Peak Wash Trail, were scorpion weed, which are among Phoenix’s most common flowers, along with brittlebush and creosote.

In 1½ miles on San Tan Trail, on a Wednesday morning, I counted 1 dog walker, 23 hikers and 8 mountain bikers. Busy!

On the Hdgehog Trail saddle, I took a break to swap water. A horse rider rode by. He didn’t seem to be completely in control of his mare, riding it close to the bench. I was leary of getting kicked when he turned around right in front of me. 🥺

At the west end of Hedgehog Trail, there is a bike repair stop. I turned north on San Tan Trail (again) for a ¼ mile, before turning west onto Malpais Trail.

There's no benches anywhere on Malpais Trail. It’s the most hikey hiking in the park. From he first saddle, Malpais Trail descends to a sandy wash at the foot of the two buttes [ photo ] . I passed three friendly horse riders, in much better control of their steeds, admiring the view.

Malpais Trail turns east, still in the sandy wash for another ¾ mile. I got briefly diverted into a side wash. The trail then makes a short climb to the second saddle, with nice views east, along the Malpais Hills, towards Rock Peak.

Malpais Trail turns east, still in the sandy wash for another ¾ mile. I got briefly diverted into a side wash. The trail then makes a short climb to the second saddle, with nice views east, along the Malpais Hills, towards Rock Peak. It was getting pretty toasty — the temp was 85℉ an hour later at the trailhead — so the bit of shade came in handy while I ate lunch and rehydrated with my hiking beer. 🥪 🍺

Malpais Trail then descends to a third stretch on San Tan Trail. There is a crested saguaro — maybe two — on the north side of San Tan Trail, though I forgot to look for it. After a ½ mile on Malpais Trail, I turned right back onto Rock Peak Wash Trail for the final stretch. Along the way, I passed a guy pushing his MTB through the deep sand, wondering how much further he had to go. 😆

Bike -> Run -> Bike. First time post-eye-surgery, and with the afternoon sprinkles and rainbows it was absolutely amazing to enjoy the outdoors without annoying spectacles. Trails were fine, a few damp sections, no mud. Took San Tan (had to pass by a dozen horses chewing up the trail), then cut over via Hedgehog to the back half of San Tan (which is always a good time), then came back on Moonlight. Really enjoyed this route, might be a solid repeat.

This is a nice park for getting some exercise. Perfect temp ,51°,at the start for the climb up Goldmine , decided to hop up on the summit this time too. Met few others on the trail toward the visitor center but once there ,outside the center a large group was forming up , managed to skirt by only to come across another large group on San Tan, had a Moses moment as the group parted to let me through. Decided to break out my old MP3 player for the last couple of miles. Recently read that wired earbuds are making a comeback,so I’m sure I looked cool with the tangled wires dangling from my neck  Listening to Traffics John Barleycorn Must Die reminded me to have a single malt once back home :D . Lots of construction on Ellsworth and the alternate Ironwood makes for slow travel to Queen Creek.

Again, but different trails. Took some dirt paths on the ride there, I enjoy running them but on a hybrid bike... I'll stick to the roads next time. Chilly morning, long sleeve shirt was appreciated, especially on the ride in. Jogged Goldmine -> San Tan -> Hedgehog -> San Tan, first time on San Tan Trail behind that lil' hill, it was nice back there. Trail gets narrow and bucks up and down a lot, making for fun biking and running. Hedgehog was also a nice change. Enjoyed the change of scenario but also missed the burn of steep uphill. A few people on the trail, including one festive trail runner who was absolutely rockin' it. Zoom-zoomed on the ride home.

Had planned to do this on Tue but my doctor had advised to postpone it in case I had an adverse reaction to the vaccine which I did in the form of a very sore arm for two days. But the advantage was that Linda would be able to join us.

We met at the TH at 9 and started up the Littleleaf Trail to the Goldmine Trail. It's a nice little climb and I'm trying to do some more elevation now that my wrist is starting to heal. Before heading down the NW side we bagged the peak because it's really the thing to do when Linda is along  .

The trail down was a tad steep and slippery so it required careful footing. We visited the gravesite which was interesting. Soon we would finally swing to the west and south again on the Dynamite Trail hiking the contours of the various mountainsides. During that part of the hike Linda spotted quite a few mine tailings and explained those to Deborah and how she can learn to spot them. We eventually came out of the mountain clusters to the San Tan Valley and the San Tan Trail. We found a bench to take a snack break a little after 1/2 way.

We hiked south thru more of the desert and washes enjoying the desert flora. There is this one section between the mountains and near a wash that I particularly like as the desert is rather plush here altho not so much today. Linda spotted some Desert Trumpet (good eye) that she pointed out for Deborah to see. Deborah does like our desert flora and is trying to learn about it.

We eventually headed east and then north on the Hedgehog Trail topping out at the last viewpoint before joining back up with the San Tan Trail heading onto the desert floor and back to the TH. We encountered many other hikers, with and without dogs, and bikeriders throughout but everyone was pretty cordial I'd say.

I've really enjoyed both my hikes in this park and it is well-maintained. However, they could stand to do some work on that back side (NW) of Goldmine. I was pretty tired by the time we finished that last mile.

I always like having good company on these longer hikes and enjoyed visiting with Linda and Deborah. And even though I've known Deborah from the mid 70s, I still learn things. She really has quite the athletic family (runners). And she has one of the best trail dogs, Duke. I'll be hooking up with her again when she moves her RV to Lost Dutchman for a couple days.

Met Angela and her friend, Deborah, at the main trailhead at 0900. Headed out on Littleleaf, then up Goldmine. I was quite impressed that Angela had chosen Goldmine while dealing with an injury, and even commented to that effect. Turns out, she didn’t know quite how steep the backside of it is. We all made it down without incident.

After looking at the graves, we headed south on Dynamite, then south on San Tan to the intersection with Hedgehog. That intersection has a nice bike repair/first aid station. Hedgehog north, then finished on San Tan again to complete the loop.

Lots of hikers, dogs, and bikers out on the trails, but everyone was friendly. Other than Goldmine, which is steep, the rest of the trails are easy and in great shape, which makes the miles go by quickly. Not much breeze, and warm today. Still pretty brown out there compared to South Mtn, which has greened up recently.

Great to see Angela again, and thank you for the invitation. Nice to meet Deborah as well, plus her dog Duke, who was a sweet little guy. He’s the same age, and about the same size, as my dog, but at least three times more alive. Mine won’t do anything more energetic than sleep in whatever room of the house I happen to be in.

Weather remains ideal for this shadeless hike, unexpectedly found the parking lot at Dynamite trailhead was not full. There was a group of about 10 that arrived at the same time, took my time gearing up so they could go ahead, I went by them on Goldmine Trail when they went up to the prominence above the saddle. Not too busy with hikers otherwise and only a few bikes and trail runners. Took Hedgehog Trail to rejoin San Tan and then Dynamite Trail to return, nice solitude on this section. Action picked up on the lower portion of Dynamite Trail with people starting late with the cooler weather. To make this a 10 mile hike I needed to do a loop around the hermit graves. A bale of hay and plastic pumpkin were placed outside the fence in the spirit of Halloween. A couple of mellow young men were also stationed outside the fence smoking, apparently thinking prop 207 has already passed :D .

Did a counter-clockwise loop starting from the Phillips Rd Trailhead. Started north on the Goldmine, over the saddle and back on the Dynamite and Santan Trails, then took the Hedgehog, Stargazer and Moonlight Trails back to the parking lot. at the saddle on the Goldmine Trail, I went to the top of the peak there, which I had never done before. The other side of the Goldmine is pretty steep and loose in spots. From the saddle it looked like they might be building a new trail that heads north from the Goldmine Trail and goes around the mountain. or maybe it was just an old mining road.

At the Goldmine TH, I walked all the way to the road because when I did the MT here last April, the lot was closed so my GPS tracks didn't overlap. The Dynamite Trail has the best views in this park, I think. and it's a much gentler grade as it climbs up and around the mountain.

Almost chilly early on, then started to feel a little hot by the time I finished. Also a lot of people early on, which cleared out quite a bit towards the end.

I wanted to do a hike in the Superstitions, but it looks like there is yet another fire in the Wilderness Area - up on the mountain this time. I opted for a sunrise hike at San Tan MRP.

I arrived about 5:10am and started out along the San Tan Loop going south. With all the clouds and the smoke from the fires, I was not expecting a vivid sunrise. Lots of mountain bikers out early on today.

I don’t make it out to this park often, but I always enjoy my hikes out here. My goal was to take the San Tan Loop all the way around and then come back via the Gold Mine Trail, but I was getting phone calls from work and had to cut it short. I have never been on the Hedgehog Trail, so I took that back towards the parking area. 5.5 quick miles and a nice morning hike.

A nice muggy morning without the usual sunshine baking me. Lots of Mountain bikers, some runners and a few hikers out today.

I stopped at the crazy old saguaro just outside the park. That old timer is looking pretty ragged. We’ll see how long he holds on.

Nice stroll with Kelley. Within the first half mile we saw a rattler, a first for Kelley so she was both nervous and excited, then it buzzed us and she jumped. Got a little warm towards the end but the breeze helped. Not too crowded.

Clouds and breeze made this shadeless hike tolerable today despite a 0900 start. Lot at Goldmine TH not full but busy. Serenaded by constant bee humming particularly around the blooming palo verde. Unless you count lizards scurrying across the trail no wildlife noted. Handful of bike riders to keep me alert, managed to keep a good pace for a workout.Usual route of Goldmine, San Tan, Hedgehog and Dynamite. In order to get double digit miles either theoretically visit the old mine or visit the hermits graves.

Wanted to cut the elevation for today and stretch the legs some without going for a run. Also on a firm time to be back home. Sped ,at least for me,around and over Goldmine Mountain via Goldmine, San Tan, Hedgehog and Dynamite trails. Must have been ladies day as it seemed to be a 10 to 1 ratio today. Sneezing and itchy eyes confirmed lots of blooms, mostly brittle brush ,some poppies and lupine. Not too many bikes today to worry about, no wildlife either , did hear one of the ladies group behind me yell “snake” but I hadn’t seen it .

Morning hike in the San Tan's. Did a clockwise loop involving the San Tan, Hedgehog, San Tan and Moonlight Trails. After two days of wet weather I was a little worried about the trail conditions. But the trails turned out to be fine. There were a couple spots of standing water, but very little mud and otherwise solid trails. The story of this hike was the distant views of the Supes and Four Peaks. Beautiful!!! The Four Peaks looked to be covered in snow - not just the peaks, but the whole mountain. Amazing! When in view, my eyes were more on that than the trail. The trails weren't too busy. One biker and 4 trail runners.. Wildlife was a couple of chipmunks.
