:) Short after work run. Got to the TH a little after 4. Did this short loop going CCW. Garmin wasn’t tracking miles for the first 10 minutes so I had to borrow the distance from a previous hike. Route was the same so the distance should be right. Felt pretty nice out for being in the 90’s. Had the trail to myself except for a hiker, biker, chipmunk and a lizard. Took a spill early on, but just bloodied my hand and aggravated a previously dislocated finger. Didn’t even have to rub dirt on it. Bonus. That came with the fall. :)

Had intended on getting out a couple days earlier but the wind was blowing too much for my hiking enjoyment. As I drove in, the hills were alive with glowing Brittlebush enmasse; such a pretty site I started taking pictures before I even parked.

I headed out on the Esplanade Trail. No movies today since I took so much on March 7th (my first owl check up), a report I still haven't posted as I'm quite far behind. I headed east over to the Apache Wash Trail. This is where I encountered several hikers. I also noted some Owl Clover which I was surprised to see. I had vowed not to take pictures of the evil Stinknet but I had to give in as it did create for some bright color throughout the hike. It apparently is replacing all the Combseed and Smallflower Stock.

On the Esplanade Trail now, the fabulous Christmas Cholla from early March doesn't have the bright red bulbs anymore, but I wasn't going to walk over there anyway as it's snake season. I was on the lookout for rattlesnakes and did see a cute little fella (Patch-Nosed? snake) half on the trail that I got some pictures of. I tried to keep a good pace but the Owl Clover was putting on such a show along with some other co-stars, I found myself stopping much more than I intended.

I finally got to the two mile mark where the South Owl was. She only has one baby though. I did get some decent photos of baby and momma :) being careful going off trail which I would do again checking for the North Owl. However, I ended up walking past her area and had to backtrack once I saw the power poles. Here I had to walk over much more ground to only find she wasn't there and it doesn't look like she hasn't been in residence as there are no markings on the nest. I still took some more photos of the Owl Clover, even with one less owl.

I also noticed on my way back that they had replaced the signs on the posts from the phone friendly to just Esplanade Trail with an arrow??? And the posts are every 1/4 mile; guess I never realized that before. It was a nice hike back to Apache Wash Trail and I was curious to see what it looked like from last month. Well there is a ton of Cheat/Foxtail Grass and a substantial amount of Stinknet. But thankfully, there was some more Owl Clover in patches and scattered as has been the case off and on through this whole hike.

This time I took the Apache Wash South Connector and kept my eye out for the little dam I had seen the last time from above. I did see it and still would like to take a closer look but not during rattlesnake season. I headed up the Sidewinder Trail which I actually enjoyed the slight incline as I had been on flat trail for the previous five miles. Here again I would see lots of Owl Clover but this time big smatterings but littler patches. My views to the north over the valley was pretty impressive because of the yellow color. It's an impressive show.

I headed up Apache Vista Trail where a lot of Lupine and brightly blooming Brittlebush greeted me along the sides of the trail and above/below. It's just hard to photograph. I also notice some poppies still blooming here and there. I always like this little peak. The views all around are covered in yellow, this time including hillsides full of Brittlebush. Once I got down and back to the Sidewinder I had hoped just to get back to the Trailhead but noooooooo, there were still more flowers and scenes to photograph. But I just decided that this is an abnormal season so taking more pictures is par for the course at this point :stop: and thus, why so many pictures... again. I would also see a lot more people.

It was a great hike with a very nice temperature for me. Hiking on the east side of the Preserve there almost no hiker traffic but there are a few bike riders. I was a little sore as I was from my Monday workout from an almost 5 day break. They say muscles remember but for decades I think that is a farce. All mine remember is how sore or tired they are after short layoffs  :( .

substantial Owl Clover and Brittlebush, still quite a lot of Lupine and Desert Hyacinth, some poppies, and way too much Stinknet. The bushes are starting to leaf out more fully.

I wrote this several weeks ago but am just now getting around to posting a few of my wildflower hikes: I thought it was time to do an Owl Check-Up so I put together a route where I could also do my usual hike out there.  I was hoping there was a way to cross over from Esplanade to Apache Wash on the northside but I couldn't see anything. So I would have to do an out and back to the Apache Loop and then crossover to Sidewinder.  It was the perfect day for my Samsung as it likes that filtered sun.  It was very crowded around the trailhead and on the way to the Esplanade.  There were several bike riders including some newbies.  I was having trouble seeing my screen and I fiddled with it for a while but gave up and continued, hoping that the filming would turn out okay.

The Esplanade Trail was so incredibly green, and with the light and the cactus jetting out it made for the usual fabulous scenery but amped up.  I almost felt like I was on a golf course in some areas.  The trail was in decent enough shape except for the dry mud tracks caused by the bike riders.  I did try to turn my camera off more than on, but you all know how that goes for me.  I had good distant views including toward the snowed Mazzies and Four Peaks, so my Pany got a little workout too.  I did come across some large brightly bulbed Christmas Cholla :) that run along the drainage that disects this area.  There were bits of poppies off and on at the beginning and as I neared the south Owl area.  And even a few miniature Owl Clover were raising their blooms to say hello.  I sure hope they are going to get bigger and multiply.

I spotted the owl nest fairly quickly.  This is the one I usually miss on the first pass.  She was up and laying in her nest. Based on the pictures I thought she looked a little miserable. She did keep her eyes on me as I circled to get a better angle.  I continued the next half-mile to check on the north owl.  The birds seemed pretty vocal today as well.  No one was home at the north nest so I retraced my steps.

My hope was not to film on the way back to the Apache Wash Trail.  I did succeed in no filming but I did end up taking several shots from the desert floor up.  Those turned out pretty cool.  I encountered three hikers at the junction of the Apache Wash Loop and wouldn't see anyone again until I got to the Sidewinder.    It's always interesting hiking near the wash as it's quite lush; especially now.  I took the first crossover to the other side of the Apache Wash Loop and headed north for a bit to hook up with the connector to the Sidewinder.

The sun was now mostly gone and the wind had picked up so I started to get really cold.  I wish I had brot my extra shirt that I could easily tie around my waist; I just didn't expect it to get cold (I was wearing a sleeveless top).  I continued to film a little but tried to avoid the housing area that seems to be creeping closer on this side.  I started up the Sidewinder Trail but was hiking to the wind. I was just getting chilled so I knew I had to turn back and head for the Trailhead.  I was so mad at myself for not having that shirt as I was having such a good hike and feeling so strong.  With the wind at my back I headed east and then south on the Apache Connector Trail.  Soon I would be seeing lots of poppies, mostly cold like me.  However, it was still a nice display of fluted poppy heads and then a very nice mix of Lupine and some Bladderpod.  I took some more photos and movies until the wildflowers stopped.

On the Ocotillo Trail were the usual nice views with the green desert floor accentuating the cactus.  And per usual, I started running into more hikers but they had jackets or long sleeve shirts on.  I took the trail to the TH and all of a sudden my phone screen went completely dark. I couldn't even turn off my phone.  I was able to somehow get to the brightness screen and slid right so that I could see it again. There must be some button I push to cause that as it's happened before.  This is the second hike I've been too chilled to drink my beer.  Oh well, it was an awesome hike, nonetheless.  Lesson learned.

I think you will enjoy these videos, mostly because seeing how green our desert floor was a real treat :D ! I did narrate a lot; I never know if that's good or bad :-k .

"Shiver me timbers", especially hiking into that wind. So I improvised today to try and avoid some of those wide open spaces. I headed north, saw a few hikers until I got on the Apache Wash Loop and Connector where I didn't see anyone until I headed back. I stopped to admire some very lovely Christmas Cholla all decked out. I took the connector to Apache Wash where I continued north again, but only to where it opened up and I reversed back toward the TH. The protection of the wash and trees was enough to keep the chill from staying.

As I got back closer to the TH there were a few more hikers out and some bike riders too. I headed up the Sidewinder and then tackled the Apache Vista hill. A bike rider coming down commented about the wind as he stopped to let me go by. I circled the top and headed down debating whether I'd do it again. It was early yet and I still felt strong so I headed back up : rambo : and did a reverse loop at the top.

When I was hiking west, besides hiking into the wind, I was hiking directly into the sun as well so that was kind of annoying. I passed a couple and we all commented about the wind. I took the longer version back to Tonto 3. Once again, I saw people out photographing people events.

I had my beer and this is the first time this season where I didn't even open my windows as the temperature was just right in my car. It's fun to watch the goings on around the TH including this one gal with a large purse galivanting around. She did take a couple pictures. On the drive home I got to see a bit of the earth's shadow in the sky.

I'm not sure why HAZel gave me 5 min in breaks so I'm going to lower that to two minutes for picture taking and trying to figure out why my watch quit. I'm getting my hiking calluses back. Watch flaked out on me.

Stayed local today. Saw my first desert tortoise of the year. He actually did a 4 mile rehab hike with me. Great catching up with Denny. After dropping him off I did the 2 minor peaks here and completed the loop. We started at 6 and it was 78 and busy with MTB'ers, Hikers, and runners.
I finished up before 10am to a much emptier lot and 97 degrees.

I decided to head out to the Sonoran Preserve and make up a loop to find a few geocaches that have been hidden since I was last out in the area. The trails are mostly flat, wide, with good tread. Basically it's a great place for Mt biking and there was a lot of cyclists enjoying the trails today. There were a couple places where the trail got a bit congested, but it was never an issue for me. As it was Halloween, I saw a few people in costumes. This probably isn't the best area to go if you're interested in AEG but if you're interested in fast miles, then it'll do well.

No, I still can't manage a 4:30AM start like some of you so I went for a 5:30 wake time and 6:20AM start (20 min drive to TH). After all, there really isn't that much difference in temp during those first three hours between 6 and 9AM (I've been studying this, ha!). However, I was curious what it would feel like with the almost 20 degrees cooler temp and much higher humidity in the AM vs my early evening 'Hood Walk.

I was pleasantly surprised when I got out of Tonto 3 that it wasn't too bad out temp/humidity-wise. I even gave short thot to heading up Ridgeback Peak first but quickly came to my senses knowing I hadn't done any hard hiking since the end of May. So I opted for Sidewinder to Apache Vista Peak. The saguaros' fruit is bursting everywhere it seems and the birds and squirrels (at least 7) were out in force. After getting to the peak, I gave thot to making it a double but decided I really wanted the miles more than the elevation; I'll do the double on Friday as the morning low is supposed to be in the low 80s and low 20s humidity :) .

There sure weren't any people out as I made my way down to Apache Wash Loop and all the way around to the TH. That's astonishing for this area. I like this particular loop because you're by the wash and it's really quite scenic and there's this thing called "shade". It was breezy as I walked eastward so that was quite nice. I could see little clouds at various places in the sky that were trying to "virga". Come on baby, let that virga hit the ground at least.

I was a little tired when I was done so I hit the Q-T for a frozen cappuccino as it quenches my thirst and will help me stay awake until my 1:30 nap time  ; ain't retirement grand.

PS I made it over 400 miles already for the year. For many of my previous years, that was near my total. Did I say "retirement is grand" :) . I think I'm getting it now.

WATCH: 4.81 miles. 129 avg bpm, 156 max (14% at max, 56% at anaerobic, 24% aerobic, 6% weight control) burning 628 calories. Avg pace 20.31, max 13.32 with starting temp of 80.5 (seems off by 10 degrees based on Echo's morning temp reading at 5:30AM and this https://www.timeanddate.com/weather/usa ... x/historic) with 38% humidity finishing at 7:57AM.

After missing what I wanted to really do out here last week, I thot I would try and get it right. My issue was the trail is not called Apache Wash Loop but just Apache Wash. I got up at 6AM :o and arrived at a pretty busy trailhead parking lot. Started walking about 6:45AM (RS said 11:43PM) without my water so had to go back for that.

Headed up the Sidewinder Trail and once again had to take a picture of the blooming Ironwood which would certainly be the theme for the day. I did my loop up Apache Vista and got a little sick, I think from the Clif Bar I had for breakfast. Headed back down the Sidewinder to Apache and crossed the wash where you start going North. There is a junction where you can take a connector over to the other side (east) of Apache Wash Trail which I would end up taking on my way back.

I double checked the route as I wanted to make sure I was on the trail I wanted to be. This is really a great trail being so close to the wash for almost the entire route north. I saw a coyote gallop in front of me but he got pretty far away before he stopped. Speaking of galloping, I ended up intrigued by a horseshoe print as I wasn't positive it was from a horseshoe despite other prints of a regular horseshoe. Still not sure if it was a print from a horseshoe but it couldn't have been a shoe as there was only one print, never two per se. I did take a picture for your opinion.

The blooming Ironwoods were showing off something fierce so I obliged by capturing photos of them in their glory. It's such a pretty contrast with the greens and golds and blue of the sky. Lots of bike riders on this trail with most coming toward me including four in a bike patrol; had never seen a bike patrol out here before. The area to the right of the wash opens up into this very large landscape. To the left (west) of the wash is that same fence that pretty much seems to surround the preserve. Wasn't sure how far I was from Carefree Highway but soon I was hearing the cars so knew I was near. You're just south of 24th Street and it looks like there is a gate opening if you want to get to the highway. However, there is another connector trail option one can take before getting near the car noise.

It's interesting to note that on this northern part of the trail you are walking through Paradise Valley as you crossover to Paradise Wash. I was glad to finally be away from the car noise as I now headed south and continued to enjoy the nice views. This trail is great for runners plus it's pretty plush for a desert. I would continue to encounter bike riders and as I got close to the north connector I would start seeing more hikers too. I decided I would try to get the south connector over so that I could do Apache Vista Peak from the west side to make a nice double. On my walk back I would catch a bit of a breeze now and then which made the hike much more enjoyable. I was getting hungry and thirsty by now too, nonetheless, I got the peak done. I added the western walk on the Ocotillo Trail to circle back to Tonto 3.

WATCH: 9.73 miles 127 avg bpm 161 max. Zones 12.3% in 5, 45.6% in 4, 40.2% in 3 burning 1212 calories. Starting temp 64.3 and 25% humidity finishing at beer time... well close enough 9:58AM; after all, it was a coffee beer.

Ironwoods and saguaros were all blooming and prolifically. A few buds and flowers on the barrel cactus.

Short, after work run. Started from the Apache Wash TH. As I expected the TH was over half full....40 plus cars. A lot of people are making lemonade with the lemons we are being dealt. Did this loop a few years ago and decided to change it up a little by taking the Sidewinder to the Apache Wash trail. This got me a little more elevation and mileage than my previous loop. Once on the Apache Wash I took the South connector to get me to the "other side" of the Apache Wash trail and the took that back to the TH. Trails were busy for a Monday afternoon....20 hikers and 11 bikers. Weather was great with some beautiful puffy clouds to frame splashes of purple, violet and yellow flowers. Really a picturesque day for a hike.

Another short run after work. Did a short loop starting from the Apache Wash TH. Took the Apache Wash Trail clockwise about 1.13 miles to reach this connector and then took the connector over to the other end of the Apache Trail to take back to the car. Temps were nice. No wildlife except for a couple of chipmunks.

Strung together a bunch of SPN trails to create a longer than normal workout. Swung back by the trailhead for lunch under the ramada, changed socks and shoes and took off again. Not much breeze, but intermittent cloud cover helped.

Saw two Western DBacks along the trails in the afternoon. The first was the largest and most polite -- a soft gentlemanly rattle at about 5 feet. The last one was smaller and far more agitated. Gave them both a wide enough berth and pressed on.

Nice day to be on the trails. Now off to soak the dogs. They are certainly tired.
