Nice hike with a couple people from the HHH media group. We went to the springs and took the loop to the south and through some beautiful cliffs.

Started from the Needle Vista lot but didn't get to Hackberry Spring. I opted to just wander the horse trails and jeep roads making a loop down to First Water Road and back to the lot. Cloudy at first but then it got a little brighter, but no blazing sun at least. Checked out a few areas of activity from possible mining or other stuff from way back when. Saw 2 hikers and 2 bikers the entire time. Mild weather and laid back hike, nice Sunday morning after yesterday's odyssey.

A stroll to test some Hoka boots and look for some cabin rubble. I hiked from the Needle Vista lot and took a ridge over to the trail leading to the horse lot. From the horse lot I hiked toward Hackberry Spring but turned back through the trail in the wash. Only one hiker and his dog on the trail.

Good thing we got out early for this one, as the after-hike traffic heading North on Apache Trail was absolutely non-stop... and just about anywhere in the vicinity of First Water Road/Dutchman State Park had cars parked everywhere!

We didn't really expect to encounter any flowing water (and we didn't) but there were a reasonable amount of pools here and there. The highlight was the reflection of the snow on Four Peaks.

Merrelly we stroll along. The Merrells are sturdy for off trail sections but trail are runners more comfortable. This was a return to a hike a few days ago to explore a prospect hole and locate a petroglyph we missed. Took a side trip up treasure hill to see a few petroglyphs there as well. The alleged ruin site on top didn't have much evidence left. It warmed up by 12pm but I was out soon after. Not as many hikers out for a Saturday. They must be shopping.

First time starting out from the Needle Vista TH. The 0.3 mile sidewalk to nowhere at the start is a bit interesting. The namesake vista is barely visible above the hills.

I generally had a figure 8 loop downloaded, but ended up just doing a lot of exploring. Lots of rolling ups and downs and some nice saguaro views. Highlights were the Hackberry spring area and the narrow to the south. There is still a fair amount of water flowing.

On the backside, I took a side trip to a mine in the area, and also headed off trail to explore the top of the cliffside above Hackberry Spring. Not too much whacking in the bushwhacking.

All in all, a pleasant explore in the Supes.

1045 start. I queued up a nice easy loop hike from the Needle Vista lot to Hackberry Spring, up to Garden Valley and back via Second Water trail and the Horse Lot.

Then I got silly and added a second loop with an off trail trek across Black Mesa to Second Water Canyon, which pretty much negated the little saunter I had in mind.

The view east from the top of Black Mesa almost made it worth the effort. While in Second Water Canyon I came across some old pipes and a spring box that I didn’t expect to see.

It was chilly out with clear skies, just a wisp of breeze. Didn’t see many people today.

First time approaching Hackberry Springs from Needle Vista on highway 88. This hike walks up a creek bed. This area is often more trafficked by horseback riders.

I prefer the the Hackberry Springs and Garden Valley loop accessible from the First Water trailhead.

I tried a side road and explored the area to the west. There are several jeep roads and unmarked trails in the area. Some easy summits and lots of unburned desert. The hiking is easy and I didn't see any other hikers along the way. I'm sure there several mine prospects and such to look for. I saw one diamondback on the trail. The temperature was better than expected and with the clouds I could have hiked longer.

A quick trip to get out. There was rain to the east so I went that way. I drove in the rain a bit but it stopped before I started hiking. I saw one other vehicle but no other hikers. The clouds kept the sun off and the light breeze was nice. The trail was moist and easy hiking. I took a side trip to the Canadian Club Hide-a-case site to see the new sign.

I've wanted to try this hike for a while now and so on our drive last week; we put it on our agenda.  I downloaded the route that I thot was the right route... which it is, after the initial hiccup.  We ended up hiking straight off the sidewalk south on a wide trail but not before seeing a group of horse riders crossing over to the other side of the sidewalk.  I saw two other hikers head in the same direction we went.  I heard and then spotted an old air force plane and got some photos despite the bad light.  We got to the topside of a hill and Ambika checked RS where we found we were not on the route so we turned back just near the sidewalk where we headed east.  However, we should have gone a little further back on the sidewalk to catch the trail.

So we cross-countried up and over a hill (as apparently others have done) to finally arrive at a wash to be back on the route again. This would be our first of 3 detours that you can definitely see on our route  .  We didn't let any of our detours go to waste as it was real pretty out there so we took our share of pictures.  After fighting my way past some catclaw we saw the trail we should have been on.  We hiked up the wash (south) for this part of the hike for a while.  The views were plentiful as were the various kinds of wildflowers; especially Desert Chicory.  Of course, Lupine and Desert Hyacinth were also plentiful and some Fairy Duster too.  The other star today was Mother Nature as she was painting the sky beautifully.  We were constantly in awe of her artwork.

Anytime you got above the wash you had great views toward the Little Four Peaks so we were constantly getting pictures of that from several different angles.  As we got more on to the single track and out of the wash, our views to the western Superstitions (Flatiron) opened up nicely.  Weavers Needle was right in front of us too.  As we got closer to the Hackberry Springs Trail system we would start encountering more hikers.  At the initial junction, we made a wrong turn as we wanted to go east down into the First Water Trail so we had to backtrack a bit.  We will do that one more time today.  We climbed a small hill where we got to another junction near the Wilderness boundary.  The hill down was a bit steep and slippery.  Probably would be best to do this part of the loop counterclockwise.

After getting to the bottom of the Creek we meandered on the north side as we headed south.  Obviously, lots of water, running water :) .  We enjoyed every moment as we made our way to the next intersection.  We stopped a few times to take it all in as the water made its way toward us with the golden grasses blowing lightly all around.  We rounded the corner and after walking a little further we decided to take a break in the shade of a rock on the other side of the water, so we hopped over there.  While sitting there we noticed that the clouds seemed to be moving rather fast so we shot some hyperlapse video. I should have shot a little longer though.

We stayed on this side of the creek heading west and as we turned south Ambika checked RS and realized we needed to go north at the drainage we were walking by so once again, we had to backtrack a little.  But per usual, we got a nice view we wouldn't have noticed before.  So up the drainage we went.  There was pretty much no water but there were some big step ups.  The trail is a little tricky to follow here as it's easy to keep going in the wrong direction.  The uphill wasn't too bad; especially when you have wildflowers all around as well as some majestic saguaros.

Once back on the nice trail tread we made some decent time... well for us that is.  We were still busy taking pictures and noticing other things along the way.  The sun was mostly out continuously now but the breeze kept it comfortable.  We did go through an area where we got buzzed... by bees.  We just kept moving.  On the way back we saw a nice little group of Owl Clover and it also seemed there were many more Fairy Dusters.  There was also a big section of those belly Woolly Daisies very low to the ground.

We followed the correct route all the way back; the last part being much easier than our earlier bushwhacking we did.  The hike took longer than we anticipated, but we had no idea that we were going to get such a flower show and the distraction of the water and golden grass topped off with a painted sky :D .  We really enjoyed the hike and hope to do it again next spring.  Do not follow our initial route in the last part of our first half mile.  The official HAZ route is correct now. I'm surprised those that have gone before us and did the same bushwhack at the beginning didn't let Joe know so he could correct it, but Tibber did.

I guess this must be one of our favorite hikes, we keep coming back to this area. It's a pretty short drive from home, and we can access the Willow Springs without having to go down the dirt road to First Water Trailhead. From this trailhead, we can also access the Garden Valley if so desired.

It was another nice day to be out!

We decided to do a quick hike in the vista point area. We didn't really follow any particular route, just stayed on the main trail and meandered down to the first water horse parking area, then followed some dirt roads back up to the Vista Point.

An early morning stroll from Needle Vista around Hackberry Mesa to Garden valley and back Second Water trail. The trails west of First water aren't named and I took a side trail to a prospect hole that had the opening squared off with concrete. I scared up a critter that I first thought was a bobcat but the tail was wrong so it may have been a feral cat. I passed a few horseback riders and one hiker on second water trail. I saw a gila monster (surprise) about 100 feet off the sidewalk on the way back to Needle Vista. Some morning clouds kept the sun off and it was till nice out when I finished at about 7:45am.

We decided to hit the Garden Valley starting out on the Weavers Needle overlook, then heading over to the Hackberry Spring, following the streambead south until it hit the Garden Valley loop, then continue on that hike through Garden Valley back onto the Hackberry Stream, then back to the Vista Overlook parking for a 8.5 mile hike.

Weather was nice and so was the hike, but we encountered a lot of folks hiking on the way back; probably about 6 groups.

Today we did a coordinated search for missing person Khayman Welsh. He went for a walk at Needle Vista 8-12-20 and disappeared in the Superstition Mountains. Our team included SSAR, family members and volunteers. We attempted a search line, but really didn’t have the manpower. Ultimately we were spread out too much to 100% guaranteed that we hadn't missed something important. Sadly, as time goes by, there is decreasing interest in finding this young man. I was told it’s been harder to get volunteers. Certain core people are constantly searching however. We didn’t find what we were looking for, which at this point is human remains. What we’ve learned from the Dutchman is that not everything can be found in the Superstition Mountains. The drone was down because of the wind.

It was a mild weathered day from 50-70 degrees, the kind that usually makes being outdoors a celebration. We fanned out and worked the area south and east of the vista heading towards Hackberry Spring and then worked back around the wash basin. This area has been covered before but not thoroughly. I used Route Scout to document my GPS track to share with the coordinators. My contribution was minor but was not a waste of time. I found a grand quantity of trash. There was ancient miner’s trash practically dissolved all the way up to modern coffee cup lids. I found tarps and makeshift campsites, clothes, and a pair of pants deep in an unusual place. The missing person’s girlfriend said that they were not Khay’s. I also found a number of active mine claim boundary stakes, where I didn’t know mining was occurring.

Afterwards we regrouped and cleared (most of) a dangerous abandoned mine. It was rough, and probably 300 feet deep with numerous drifts, adits, collapsed supports, debris like rails, cave ins, and bad air. One area we could not clear due to the risk, but a determined person could have got up in there where we weren’t able to check.

I’m glad I did it and will help them more. It was touching to be there and to look into the grandparents eyes and be thanked for helping. I don’t want to speculate or spread rumor, so will not go into details of his disappearance. Obviously they can always use more volunteers and if you know or have found something, please report it to the MCSO. Things you might want to report aside from human bones are for example, the smell of decomposition, or predator scat with material in it, etc.

I waited for it to warm up and explored near SR 88. I started on the Goldfields side to follow a high trail but it eventually dropped down to the lower trail so nothing new. I crossed over to Needle Vista and followed some old roads. I ended up on an old section of SR 88 I didn't know was there. I walked a few other side trails and decided to come back and explore again. there are several unmarked trails that are worth a look when one was some extra time. Of course some of the ridges without trails were calling as well.
