Early morning hike in Sedona. Parked at the roadside parking for the Mescal trail (this is immediately adjacent to the Mescal trail as it crosses the road). There is also a day use parking lot for the Mescal trail just up the road that looks brand new, but based on Tibber’s log has been around for at least a year. It has bathrooms, picnic tables parking for about 30 cars and two other trail (besides Mescal) that take off from it (Oak and Vista). As a day use area with amenities I think you need a Sedona Red Rock Pass or to pay for the parking. However, I didn’t see any pay stations on site. Odd :-k (When I finished my hike, the roadside parking was full and I didn’t see anyone in the day use area). Side note: Since the the Dry Creek Parking gets filled so quickly, this would be an excellent alternative to access the Devil’s Bridge area. There is also signage for Devil’s Bridge along the trails so Sedona is thinking the same thing.

Did an in and out and an in and out on the Mescal. First, hiked east on the Mescal to where it connects to the Chuckwagon. This is actually where the Mescal trail starts. The trail map had this being .4 miles, but it was only .22 on my Garmin. At this juncture there is also signage for the Devil’s Bridge if that is your intended destination. Turned around and headed back. Before continuing on the Mescal I checked out the day use area. Very Nice. There is a short connector trail that connects the day use area to the Mescal. The Mescal trail is your typical Sedona trail….beautiful! There is a small hill that you climb shortly after leaving the road, but after that, the trail does a nice job of holding its elevation as it makes it to and around the east-south side of Mescal Mesa. The trail runs along the base of the Mesa offering quite a bit of red rock hiking. There are white arrows painted on the rock to help users stay on track. There are also a couple of cairned alternative routes for bikers who might want a more challenging ride. (The routes themselves didn’t seem all that challenging, but getting onto them did). As the trail wraps around to the west side you get a nice view of the Boyton area. Today, I saw several people climbing around the vortex. The trail loses some elevation as it switchbacks down to its connection to Deadman’s Pass trail. On the way back I checked out an obvious user trail that takes off as the trail wraps around the southern tip of Mescal Mesa. It climbs about 20 feet and then parallels the Mescal eventually tying back in just before one of the alternative routes for bikers. On the way back I took a signed connector trail that takes you to the Long Canyon TH. Pretty nice connector trail, however I then bushwhacked about .3 miles to get back to my car. Beautiful hike, but then, you can’t go wrong in Sedona.

Our next hike after the morning at Palatki, is one I like to take newbees to and this, as usual, did not disappoint.  Rather than doing the loop, we started from the new Mescal Trailhead (it's about two years old I think) where once again, we had no problem finding parking. FYI - every time we drove by the parking for Boynton Canyon vehicles were along both sides of the road.  The shuttles are free but I don't know how user friendly their schedule is as I think the wait time could be long if you don't time it right. Before our trip, I had bot a Red Rock Pass too so we definitely got our money's worth.

We headed on up the trail as you meander your way up and down and around to where Mescal Mountain begins.  Of course, you have great views just about everywhere.  There wasn't much in the way of wildflowers yet but still plenty of other flora to keep your interest.  We would run into other hikers off and on throughout the hike but nothing where it seemed crowded. The trail is nice and easy for the most part but there are those ledges that do keep your attention.

Even though I've done this four times now, with others' eyes you get to see something new and that was the case this time.  I even spotted a cave as we came around to the northwest side.  There were some people sitting below it and they didn't even know until I pointed it out to them.  They went up and investigated.  Needed to have Kelly with me, ha!  We didn't go too much further; just enough for them to see up both canyons.

We enjoyed the hike back as much as we did going.  It was a beautiful afternoon.  I didn't take that many pictures because I have so many already.  And I didn't take any movies as I already have them up on youtube from my trips in 2022 with Greg, 2019 with Mia and 2017 with Kelly.

WATCH 12:41-2:47PM, 4.12 miles, 4537-4791 elevation burning 673 calories. Temp 43.7 sunny and 24% humidity.

I needed to take care of some business in Sedona and asked Greg if he'd like to come along and we could do this hike. Google took us on a short cut from Cornville Rd (off of I-17) the back way via Page Springs which is a windy/narrow connector to 89A but it was fun to go through an area I've never seen before.

We got to the TH but it wasn't the TH I thot. It is brand new so we had to do a little investigating before heading on our way. The mountain was to the north of the TH so it was just a matter of how to hook up with the trail to take us around the mountain. Once we figured that out, we more or less waited to reach a junction to take us west that never came as we were on the Mescal Trail from the get-go.

There was lots of Goodding's Verbena from the start and it's not one of my favorite smells so I was glad when the bulk of that ended. It's sure pretty to look at though and we saw lots of FeatherPlume too (feather dalea). The views to the north toward Maroon Mountain area is very pretty as you make your way west to the flank of Mescal Mountain. As we got closer to Mescal Mountain, Greg spotted a cave so that kept our attention for a bit. On my zoon into the cave, I saw a rope which I didn't see while taking the picture.

By this time you have nice views to the south of Thunder Mountain and to the west of Doe Mountain. I decided to do some filming today as I haven't been doing much of that with my city hiking. This is a pretty area for sure altho it does look dry to me. The amount of ocotillo you see on this southwest side is surprising. I did get a Common Ear Lizard to do some posing for me so I got some good pictures. We would encounter several bike riders and other hikers including a couple from Michigan that we would hike with for a bit.

My favorite part of this hike is rounding the corner with the view toward Boynton Canyon. This area of the mountain is nice as well. The light seemed a little harsh today so the photos weren't that good; however, the movies are fine. We encountered a few hikers at the base of Deadman's Pass Trail that I thot was a hill but it's really not. When I first hiked it in 2017, I was with Kelly and maybe her pace made me think it was a hill  . So that went better than I hoped. From there it was a cruise down the Long Canyon Trail where we saw quite a few more hikers; some inquired whether we had been to the Birthing Cave.

As we were going down the trail I thot we should be over to the right (west) more and that was indeed the case as at the end of the Long Canyon Trail at the paved road, there is a connector that takes you back over toward Mescal Trail. I had forgotten about that junction sign on our way up as I can't remember using that connector before when Mia and I did this hike counterclockwise in 2019.

I like the hike from this new TH. There seems to be ample parking as they also have lined parking on the road. However, this TH is also used for access to the trail for Devil's Bridge. Oh, and FYI, driving by Dry Creek Road was loaded with cars on a Wednesday morning.

We had lunch at Stagecoach Sedona which replaced the Olde Sedona Bar and Grill where I've eaten a couple times. My excerpt from last May's trip report: "and we had a great dinner. The reason I'm telling you about Olde Sedona is they have a Homestyle Chicken dinner like no other and we were quite surprised and delighted." Well they completely renovated the place so I was pretty shocked. They did a fabulous job (see photo) and we did enjoy our food so I would recommend it; altho the prices are obviously a little higher now.

tons of Goodings Verbena and Featherplume (Feather Dalea) and in some areas, Blackfoot Daisy. The Banana Yuccas and Century Plants were just starting to bloom. One area along Long Trail had Evening Primrose.

So, I got a call. Angela had some business matters to attend to in Sedona and asked if I wanted to tag along and do a short hike on short notice. I agreed and she swung by and picked me up. The smoke from the Crooks Fire was hanging low the entire ride up I-17. Once we were north of the Verde Valley it lifted somewhat which was good.

We took a southern route to 89A through Page Springs. We saw some really nice riparian areas there that warrant another visit in the future. There was a large fish hatchery along with a birding area with walking trails. The icing on the cake was several winerys with tasting rooms. We almost never made it to Sedona.

The hike we did was one Angela had done variants of a couple of times prior. Basically it was just a CW loop around Mescal Mountain. Quite by accident we started from the brand spankin' new Mescal Trailhead as opposed to the Boynton TH she had used previously. It was very nice and the bathrooms had that never been used look so we remedied that.

The weather was warm but not hot thanks to a steady breeze. Towards the end of the hike it was hold on to your hat and red dust everywhere! We finished just in time for a great BBQ pork lunch at a new restaurant downtown. I tried deep fried pickles for the first time and they were really good. Thanks for the invite Angela. It was a pretty hike and it's always nice to get out of town as the oven warms up down here.

Nice day after some overnite rain. North from Mescal TH then up Boynton to the very cool subway cave, then Deadmans over to Long and up to the end and back. Boynton was packed, Long was much quieter.

My bike buddies Carey and Dan joined me in Sedona to ride this excellent loop. I was surprised to find parking available at the Mescal trailhead at 9am, but it was a Thursday. I can tell you that there is currently construction going on along Dry Creek road near Devil's Bridge - the shoulder is being closed to parking south of the turnoff to the Devil's Bridge trailhead. We rode Mescal north to Canyon of Fools, Dawa, Aerie, Deadmans Pass, Long Canyon, and returned on Chuck Wagon. Perfect temps and excellent trails!

Decided after yesterday's debacle, some easy-to-follow trails would be in order. Long Canyon has been on the list for a bit, and it seemed like good Sedona weather, so decided on that this morning (my friend literally showed up at my place, and I said, "I was thinking Mazatzals, Supes, or Sedona, what sounds good?"). Last minute decisions are great.

Anyways, we parked near Boynton TH, along the road, and started up over Deadman's Pass. Everything from here up to where Long Canyon takes a little jog north is pretty flat, easy jogging. After the north jog the scenery gets like 10 times better. Colors were popping near the end of the trail.

At the official trail end, there are a few different canyons you can explore. We walked up the one to the east (towards Maroon Mountain), some vegetation and scrambling involved. Curious whether one could get up to Maroon from there, but it looked like a pretty steep scree slope farther up ahead.

Way down was fast and easy, took a detour around Mescal Mountain. Mascal trail was good fun.

I was a little nervous about heading to Sedona on a holiday weekend just days after the Dry Creek trail system quarantine was lifted. But, the temperatures were forecasted to be great and we're early birds so we went for it. Got to the Mescal trail head at 7am and only a couple of vehicles there. Quick climb up Mescal right from the start then the trail levels off to go around the mountain. Opted for the "Extreme" trail this time. The only real tough part is jumping a foot wide gap on the off camber slick rock (I ended up pushing my bike across). Mescal is such a treat! From there we jumped on Deadmans Pass for a big long climb over to Long Canyon which is smooth fast downhill to Chuck Wagon. Chuck Wagon is a nice long collection of ups and downs with plenty of shade and some interesting rocky challenges. Lots of traffic on Chuck Wagon, both bikers and hikers. Took Chuck Wagon all the way down to Girdner and over to Snake. From there to OK Alternative which was devoid of any signs of recent human traffic. Jumped on OK for a bit and then crossed the road up Canyon of Fools to Yucca and back to the trailhead on Mescal.

Went up to Sedona today for a mtb bike ride with SCA. Found many trail heads closed with a big "STAY HOME" sign. Was planning on parking at Mescal, but everything along Long Canyon road was closed. Drove over to Fay Canyon and parking there was open. Made an impromptu plan B and hit the trails. Fantastic day. Also rode Canyon of Fools - that was FUN!

We had to drop off some more art for the Romain Room at Sedona Consignment (off of Coffee Pot Dr and 89A) so we thot we would make a weekend of it. Please feel free to drop by and take a look. We stayed at the Green Tree and apparently there was a jeep caravan staying there as well.
The next morning we headed out to the trailhead. I had my window down and could hear this buzzing. I said, "that can't be cicadas" can it? as it sounded like an electric fence on steroids. But that's exactly what it was. I was surprised when we got to the Trailhead that there weren't more cars. We decided to do the loop counterwise as I had done it clockwise a couple years ago with Kelly.... should have gone the other way.

Anyway, we started down and then up as we made our way to the trail junction with Deadman Pass and then headed south and around on the Mescal Trail up to the side of Mescal Mountain. We already encountered our first bike rider of many today. On our way up we stopped to look back at the fabulous view. As we hiked we would discover we almost needed ear plugs as the cicadas were so loud. We thot they would eventually stop buzzing but it more or less continued the entire way :o .

Once up on the ledge it is such great hiking and such great views. It was slightly shady here as we made our way around to the south side. My niece is a bit of a picture-taker so we stopped a few times for her to be come one with the landscape. Once again we would encounter some more bike riders as we made our way around the corner. But before we did, we noticed a trail that went up the side thinking it might be a climbers route or something. Later we would see some hikers hiking above us but they certainly weren't climbers so maybe there is a higher trail.

It's real pretty along this south side and interesting where the trees seem to be more plentiful above us. You have distant views to Courthouse Butte and the like too. The trail splits for the bikers so Mia took the biker-rated difficult (high trail) and I took the biker-rated extreme (lower trail). We eventually determined that the difference in the rating must be due to the Extreme being on the edge and having more challenging entry/exit points. My older cousin (by 9 months), Wendy Romain Walsh, rode this and had mentioned to me as well that for her it was a bit frightening.

We made our way around the mountain and over to the Long Canyon Trailhead. Along the way we encountered a few more hikers and bike riders and lizards and beautifully budding and blooming agave. The cicadas were flying around as well and occasionally they would hit us; not sure why. A couple hit my hat so it became more of a helmet it seemed. The temps were starting to warm as we made our way up Long Canyon Trail which looks like a wide open road for a bit. Here we saw some different flora though not much blooming.

We stopped just after the junction with Deadman Pass to eat our apples. While there a couple helicopters flew above and we saw a bike instructor with two students trying to pedal up the hill by here. We would run into them off and on for the rest of the hike. As we came up the Deadman Pass, Mia says, "yep, we sure should have gone the other way" ](*,) . We ran into a family that didn't have any idea where they were hiking really and had very little water. We told them the trail does loop but it's about 4 1/2 miles. They decided to turn around. We waited for them a bit at the Mescal Trail Jct to let them know they could reach the side of the mountain from here in less than 1/2 mile. I guess they originally thot they were doing a hike up to the spire but this wasn't even the TH for that I don't think.

My niece is having hip issues so this was a good test to see what they could handle. And for me, any hike right now is a good hike. Here are a couple videos, you will hear the cicadas throughout:

In all the times I've been to Sedona, I have never had my bike with me. Planned a trip with the boys and the night before we came up with this sort of figure 8 loop. It was great.
Chuckwagon was mostly empty other than the section that people use to access Devil's Bridge. There was also quite a bit of water still in some of the creek crossings.
Mescal is the main one I wanted to ride, seemed like a nice mix of slick rock and exposure, but not crazy like white line. I enjoyed this trail a lot, excellent scenery, and even though there were many others on the trail it did not feel over crowded.
Deadman's pass, not bad, would have rather gone downhill not up.
Long Canyon, glad I was going down on the one.
I also confirmed how out of shape I am in, but even so this trip was plenty enjoyable, not sure why I waited so long.

Headed to Sedona with a friend in hopes of snow and adventure. Snow was forecasted starting late morning and would build as the day progressed. We would spend the day exploring Mescal Mountain, Fay Canyon and Pumphouse Wash.

We started off at the Long Canyon TH and started a CCW loop around Mescal Mountain. We checked out a couple of alcoves and looped around. The views were nice and dark clouds were developing. We completed the loop and then drove over to Fay Canyon. We headed up that canyon and bypassed the arch, we've both been there before, and topped out near the end of the trail sign. During this time a light snow started falling.

After Fay, we ate lunch and then headed up 89A. We opted for Pumphouse Wash. At this point, this entire area had a solid dusting of snow. We parked right outside the wash and headed in. It was slow as we enjoyed this amazing canyon. We took a variety of pics and went about a mile in. At this point it was getting late in the day and we wanted to head back.

The drive home turned into an adventure. We headed north for the I-17 and snow started falling again. We hit the I-17 and found a standstill for miles and miles. We ultimately turned around and headed back down 89A and got home at least two hours later than we should have. Despite this, it was a really nice day. We were a tad early for the snow but got a small taste. This would develop into a solid storm over the next few days.

The break in the June weather, moved this hike up on my list. Temps 70's and light to medium drizzle for a good portion of the day, made for some interesting cloud formations.

All of these trails were new to me and Long Canyon's been on the list for awhile. Starting at the Mescal TH, on the Mescal Trail, we were all surprised by how nice this trail and views were.

Deadmans Pass Trail is all about the views. The entrance to Boynton Canyon, Dutchwoman, Mescal Mountain and the entrance to our first set of adventures, Long Canyon.

I had a set of ruins and a 70' tall ladder on the agenda to find, with a few other ruins and a trip past the end of trail as options.

We took Long Canyon Trail to "Butt Rock" and started the 700' climb past the three sisters. The views got better the higher we got. The ruins are a pretty well preserved 3 room structure. There are corn cobs, hemp and shards in the area. They sure picked a sweet spot. The best part of this spot is it's echo. I've never heard a location that echoed like this one. [ youtube video ]

Next up, was to look for the ladder. I'd seen photos of it, and a cryptic idea of the location. The area we searched was a bust. I need to do some more research.

We skipped the search for more ruins to go past the "End of Trail" and look for a way up and out of the canyon. There is a well worn path for a good portion. There is a steep climb, head through a subway, up again and then...no go.

We retreated from Long Canyon and decided we'd finish the day with trip to the top of Mescal Mountain on the way back. The initial climb from Deadmans Trail, was more of a matter of finding a way through the brush. After the initial climb, we made our way across the ridge to the final climb. Looking at it quickly from afar, it did not look like it was going to happen. We got up to the edge and Karl found a path up. Good views for sure up top. Getting down was surprisingly much easier than getting [ youtube video ]

We saw only a handful of people all day.

Mescal Trail
Semi dreaded this one heading in. Turned out to be a winner. Red rock views galore over a red rock course that holds your interest. Overcast and sprinkles are the ticket in June.

Deadmans Pass
Once again better than anticipated. The views, weather & company synced well.

Long Canyon Trail #122
Like Fay Canyon the forest alone has merit. Just a good hike if you follow the trail. Any scramble you survive will probably net a better experience. Ruins will be the main attraction for most. Looked similar to other rock pueblos but the approach was an impressive short adventure. Scratched a 17 year itch just enough to rekindle a quicker return. Speaking of which, there is some trophy poison ivy in this canyon.

Mescal Mountain
Heading in this intrigued me slightly more than the mountain bike trail around the perimeter. The pitch up albeit different than the scree chute to Brown's Peak rates a similar effort. Serious class 3 but not really class 4. Which means most will tackle it without hemming and hawing. The views up top are good. That said the perimeter trail is just as impressive in my opinion.

Synopsis
Sedona was a big piece of getting me interested in this despicably boring activity. Three previously traveled areas this year alone have netted unexpected new views and interest.

Joined Bruce and Joe for some Sedona hiking fun. Bruce combined the Mescal Mountain and Long Canyon into a sort of loop hike. We did a partial loop on Mescal before heading into Long Canyon. Did a side trip up to some nice ruins around 3 Sisters rock formation. After that we continued up Long Canyon passed the end of trail sign and followed some routes up the steep canyon. Gets pretty steep and allegedly there is a way up to the rim but it looks challenging.

We headed back down Long Canyon enjoying the nice trail before one more detour. We took side trip off and up Mescal Mountain. Some rock scrambling but nothing too intense to make the summit. Nice views all around and with the on and off rain it made for interesting cloud formations all day long.

After Mescal Mountain we headed back to Long Canyon Trail continuing on to finish off the Mescal Loop trail back to the vehicle. It was humid but great temps for mid June.

angela's knee was healed enough to try this scenic sedona combo
criteria was eight to ten miles, not much elevation gain
deadman's pass, long canyon, chuckwagon and mescal for a clockwise loop
i've done the mescal mountain loop a couple times, but angela added a big chunk of chuckwagon for some extra mileage
got going around 0930, in cool temps and not much breeze
not as many hiking these trails as there might have been on Boynton canyon
we did see some hikers and mountain bikers later on
took a lunch break in a little pouroff/amphitheater with comfy seating in the shade, then another snack break along mescal
angela's knee held up well
had some early dinner at black bear diner in cottonwood, then headed back down I-17 with one slowdown going up the hill from camp verde - not bad
thanks for driving, angela
nice getting out with you again :)
next time will have to take a look at summiting mescal mountain

Time to see how the knee would do so I found this hike, even though Kelly had done part of it before. I made a bigger loop with little ups and downs through Sedona's beautiful redrock country. My knee did well but I gave out at about the seven mile mark; plus it got a little warm. We drove up the back way via Cottonwood and took one of the last few spots at the Boynton TH.

We headed up in the very cool shade of Deadmans Pass Trail with great views to our north. We encountered about 6 other hiker/bikers on this stretch. As we came toward Long Canyon we got to see some yellowing tall trees where we hooked up with the Chuckwagon Trail. This trail is only a few years old.

We continued east as we stayed high above Dry Creek below but had nice vistas every which way with the main one being Lost Wilson and Wilson Mountains. We spotted Devil's Bridge so I did some zooming altho you wouldn't know it was the Bridge unless you knew it was the bridge if you know what I mean. We saw some houses just before we dropped down into the creek bed. What a great backyard they have :) . It was interesting terrain down here before we climbed back up to once again see our vistas and eventually start heading west.

We had lunch at a scenic overpour with views toward Maroon Mountain. As we continued further it almost felt we were on a bit of a ridge/plateau. We could see Doe Mountain in the distance as well before we hooked up with the Mescal Trail and started heading north and west. Coming up from the drainage at the Mescal TH is when the sun started getting to me and I began losing my mojo. We were nearing the seven mile mark and agreed to take a break when we reached that mark but ended going a little farther and taking advantage of the last shade before you head around Mescal Mountain.

Oh Mescal Mountain, you are a beauty. Not only the mountain itself but the views along the way continue to dazzle; especially as you round the long corner and head north. And that's when it really dawned on me why Kelly didn't object to doing this trail again. The trail around the mountain is nice and only has a couple pay attention to your footing moments. We saw a rather large cave that looks like it might be fun to check out and of course Kelly does want to summit it one day.

It got a little warm as we finished off so I was glad we were done. Plus I'm still a bit weak after nearly a month of any good solid physical activity. (A note, it does seem the bikers go counterclockwise.) We both enjoyed our beer. We were presented with two rock hearts by a gentleman walking around the parking lot. It's supposed to bring us something but I can't remember what. Anyway, it was a thoughtful gesture.

Thanks again Kelly for a great hike and your patience. At least with the slower pace you have lots of great stuff to look at.
Later we headed to That Brewery in Cottonwood but they don't serve food and with it being Sunday, other options were closed. We ended up eating at the Black Bear Diner and come to find out, they have a few other franchises here in the Valley. The drive back was not bad except for going up the hill as it was backed up clear to the intersection we came out on. Fortunately, it stayed steady and we made it back with only one other minor slowdown.

Casey and I headed to Northwest Sedona to enjoy the gorgeous weather and the other various pleasantries of the red rocks. We opted for a leisurely Saturday, parked at the Mescal Trailhead around 10am without any issues, found a great parking spot right away. We took the Mescal trail to Long Canyon trail, then let Chuckwagon lead us to Devil's Bridge. Along the nature walk that is Chuckwagon, we saw about a dozen mountain bikers, not many hikers. Devil's Bridge fulfilled our longing for scenic vistas and it offered an interested people watching experience as well. We hung around the bridge to wait in line for our photo to be taken and chatted with a few people before heading back to the Mescal TH via Chuckwagon. As we finished our hike, the cloud cover and cool breeze made the hiking conditions ideal. I've said it before and I will say it again, I absolutely love the Red Rock Wilderness on an overcast day.
