After work jog. Got to the Apache Wash TH around 4pm. Did a lasso, going CCW, involving Apache Wash, Badger Brawl, connector trail, Cliff Walker, Badger Brawl and Apache Wash. in that order. Not the most exciting of trails, but nice for running …… and apparently biking as well. Encountered 15 bikers while doing the lasso. Surprised at how green everything was out there. I didn’t think we had had that much rain, but the desert is looking nice right now. Nice to get a few miles in on a weekday.

Working on finishing up more areas on the HAZ list, in this case the Sonoran Preserve N. Believe it or not, I actually only have the flat stuff left except for the Tramonto Trail and Peak. I have four more trails to finish off this area. I was going to do this hike on Friday but it was a tad too windy for me to do that many miles, I know, pathetic. But now that I'm retired, I can be choosy :D .

I created a route so that I could get 3 of the missing trails. As I started walking on the sidewalk Skip Rimsza Connector, I guess I didn't realize the first few miles would all be on sidewalk as I thot there might have been a trail next to the sidewalk. Continuing on the East Skip Rimsza Paseo I was wondering who thot we needed an ultra wide sidewalk to stretch for a couple miles alongside a road that had bike shoulders. I'm not sure of the history of this somewhat extravagant walkway. The traffic noise is awful but I enjoyed the scenery.
2-5-2022 I finally found a link about the Sonoran Boulevard https://www.phoenix.gov/streets/project ... -boulevard

I guess I never noticed the decorated cement siding either as it's really quite nicely done; you'll have to see the pictures. There was one section where the sidewalk had a spur that went down next to a bridge over the wash that I thot would have a sidewalk on the other side, but it didn't. No big deal as I just walked over the rocks and back up to the main sidewalk.

I came across the first junction to connect with Badger Brawl Trail but had mapped out to hook up with the next junction that also connects up with the Badger Brawl. I didn't see any other hikers on this section but did see a few bike riders. Finally I got to go over an opening in the fenceline to join up on the connector to Badger Brawl. Neither of these particular trails are mapped out on HAZ but they are marked with signs.

I was glad to get away from the traffic noise and have my feet on dirt as I veered north to hook up with Badger Brawl Trail. The desert really is pretty in the Preserve and I always enjoy it. The trail tread is mostly nice throughout so you can walk and gawk fairly safely.

As I got nearer the Dove Valley area I saw a tall structure that I could hear and see a long hose going up and down. I have no idea what it is; maybe a well of some sort? The trail actually continues to the east at the intersection but I went west on the North Cliff Walk Badger Brawl Connector as it skirts the south side of the tall dirt wall encasement of the Cave Creek Landfill. You can see this Landfill from quite a distance as I saw it from the Paseo North. Just past here is a fabulous stance of cholla on both sides of the trail. And then there is this one area you pass through where the grass is long and very green as are the trees and bushes on each side.

Now it was down into Cave Creek along side this incredible dirt conglomerate of the high side of the Cave Creek wall on the Esplanade Cliff Walk Connector. There were also a bunch of green ribbons tied here and on the other side. Being back on the west side of Cave Creek on the Esplanade Trail and heading south in more familiar territory was nice. It was also very green over here too. I did encounter a runner, the first person I'd seen since I left the south side of my hike.

I checked out both the owl nests but it's too early for anyone to be home. The light was shining nicely on some of the cactus so I tried to capture it a couple times with moderate success. The trail has remnants of being muddy in a couple places. Next was the turn south on the Apache Wash Trail for that last leg back to the TH. Nearer the area where you cross over Apache Wash I encountered two people. I did the wide swing back to Tonto 3 to finish off my 8 1/2 mile day.

Doing some Rx on the Preserve I did find this; I didn't realize how many acres it was: 2016 City land acquisitions reach 9,671 acres for Sonoran Preserve at a cost of $325 million. Still couldn't fin anything on what it cost for the Paseo infrastructure; it had to cost a lot!

WATCH: 8.57 miles (high point 1904, low point 1741) avg bpm 125, max 144 (16% Zone 3 Aerobic, 80% Zone 2 Weight Control) burning 1017 calories. Starting temp 69.8 degrees, 19% humidity finishing at 4:30PM

I wanted to do another Owl Checkup. After traffic delays I got started a little after 7AM. It turned out to be a glorious hiking morning with great temps and a nice breeze the entire way.

As suspected, the south nest was empty. One of the hikers I had run into previously was out there so I talked with her a bit before going to the north nest which was occupied by the owlets but no mom. It was hard to get photos as they were low in the nest. I circled it completely trying to get a better angle but to no avail.

Since the south nest was empty I decided to continue north and come back on the Cliff Walk Trail. I crossed the large wash below the cliff and headed up onto the trail. I was trying out my new PocketPod holder on my phone as holding it by hand and filming while hiking is not very comfortable. However, I was having trouble keeping the horizon level so I'm not sure yet how well it will work. It is surely a lot easier to have the phone on the handle (not a selfie stick).

I stopped to take a picture with my camera of a cactus wren when I heard a scream. Three other hikers had come upon a rattler and two ran back quite a ways before they stopped  . The other gal pointed it out to me; it was hard to see below the bush. I tried to walk by but it hissed at me rather vehemently and stuck its tongue out so I just took a couple pictures. For whatever reason, all of a sudden there were more hikers and bike riders so I continued on my way.

I came upon the Badger connector so I decided to add that to my hike. It's a pretty trail in the middle. However, as it turned out, I'm not sure that I was on the same part of it as I had been previously as I eventually came upon that rusty fence like they have along the preserve. I don't recall seeing that before so that's why I think I was on a different section. It seems I took the South Cliff Walk Badger Connector which causes you to miss part of the Cliff Walk. Anyway, I enjoyed it and was sufficiently entertained other than it gets a little too close to the road.

It's interesting terrain as you make your way back to the Apache Wash Loop. Just before the TH I saw a couple birds working on a saguaro bloom so I took quite a few pictures of that. It was interesting to watch and when I got home to see the pics, I got a few good ones, even with 30x zoom. If I hadn't been hungry I would have done the Apache Vista Peak but opted to use the Ocotillo Trail to take the long way to Tonto 3. It was busy as was expected but got me to the 8 mile mark anyway.

The trails were sufficiently crowded with hikers and bikers, not too many dogs. I enjoyed my beer and the cool temps. I was just so happy with how nice it was today. I haven't done a video for a while so here is the link using LosDosSloFolks music: [ youtube video ]

Saguaros blooming; not sure they count as wildflowers exactly. Some Palo Verdes are still in bloom but waning.

My niece wants to try and do a weekly hike with me so I thot this would be a good gauge as to how she feels after a longer than 5 mile flatter hike. I put this loop together and we hiked it counter-clockwise.

We had a 1 pm start waiting for the chance of showers to clear. We headed over to the Badger Brawl Trail, a new one for me. It was slightly cloudy for a good portion of the hike as the clouds entertained us for most of the trek. Initially you hear the traffic on the Parkway but as you start to veer north you hear less of that. I pointed out various distant landmarks to Mia; she might as well learn them now. I also IDed some of the flora (mostly trees and cactus at this point). We saw various Christmas Cholla in different stages so that was interesting.

The Cliff Walk Trail was a little disappointing but it did present interesting views of the opposite side of the wash we were hiking above. At the crossover point we encountered our only hiker of the day who was hiking from his complex but doing the north part of the loop. It's not clear that this is the crossover point but just know the cut through into the wash is on this (south) side of the gauging station.

Once you get over to the other side of the wash and continue hiking west you will see the marker for the Esplanade Trail. We turned left (south) here and were now on the owl nest hunt which turned out to be relatively easy. We didn't see any owls. However, some of the saguaros in this area are pretty interesting.

The sun was out now but there was also a nice breeze as we made our way back to the TH. We stopped by this one Xmas Cholla and I wondered if the bulbs were edible so we both grabbed one and of course, we both got stickered to death so our answer is "no", not edible unless you can figure a way to get all the stickers off. So we spent a couple minutes trying to get the stickers out  . During our hike there were about a dozen bicyclists that we stepped aside to let pass.

We finished off our afternoon with a beer and pita chips with the view of Apache Vista in front of us. We enjoyed a couple hawks as they were flying around. Mia said she really enjoyed the area and the hike.

WATCH: 7.11 miles, 119 avg BPM, 139 high (23% in Zone 4, 66% in Zone 3 and the rest in Zone 2 burning 924 calories). 68 degrees at start and 41% humidity (could definitely feel it). Finished at 3:47PM.

After work jog. Got on the trails right around 5:30. Wanted to get a loop in with this connector since I hadn't been on it for awhile. Did a lasso with a very small tail. Went out on the Apache Wash and then took Badger Brawl to its end (that's the tail; about .15 miles long$. On the way back, I took the Cliff Walker connector (which connects the BB to the CW) which ties into the Esplanade connector (this connects the CW to the E). Then took the Esplanade back to the Apache Wash trail which I then took back to the TH. The trails were in good shape, though there was some encroachment in spots from foliage that had taken advantage of the wet winter. (The trails were rutted in spots from users utilizing the trails during the wet winter :? ). Foliage was still doing pretty well, though I could see some drying out. That being said I felt that vision was more obscured than it had been in previous visits from fuller and taller vegetation. Could be wrong, but it seemed that way. Trails weren't that busy. Saw one biker, 2 hikers and a jogger. Wildlife, though unimpressive was nice: good number of quail, several rabbits, a jackrabbit, a couple of Hawks circling in the evening skies and coyotes , unseen, but heard in the distant.

Wanted to get a loop involving this connector trail. Started from Apache Wash Th and going CCW hit portions of the following trails. Apache Wash - Badger Brawl - Esplanade Connector - Esplanade - Badger Brawl - Apache Wash. This area isn't overly scenic, but these are nice trails to run on .... and bike. Park was crowded for a Wednesday afternoon. You could tell it was a "Friday" for a lot of people. That being said, I didn't encounter any hikers, but did cross paths with 8 bikers. Temps were great again. No wildlife.

Low temps and sunshine seemed to suggest a long, but not too strenuous, hike. Hit the eastern side of the Northern Sonoran Preserve for a convoluted meander. Not many folks on the trail today.
