met claud at the zoo at 0700
this time we went up to hole in the rock, then north for a bit
back around some of the lakes, up to hunt's tomb
a mix of crosscut canal and some of the trails north of curry, back on crosscut
saw a couple of bighorn sheep on the buttes, and a few egrets
haven't wandered around these areas in a few years
think my curiosity is satisfied after our last couple outings
good times with former co-worker/fellow retiree

Thought I'd take advantage of a lite traffic day to head into the heart of the city and spin around on Papago Park trails. Started from the lot across from the Phoenix Zoo entrance and did a clockwise loop on the singletrack trail that parallels the Papago Park Walking Path. Did a spur on the Papago Buttes trails and rode down the amphitheater steps, which was pretty sketchy on the full rigid bike. Worked my way south on Vigilante trail and crossed Galvin Parkway on a path that heads over to Hole in the Rock where I found crowds of visitors. Went south from the Hole along the Crosscut Canal trails crossing over Marigold Lane and under Curry Lane. Last time I was in the area between Curry Lane and the 202 in was full of trash and homeless people. Not any more. While the trash has been cleared out of this area, it still feels like a dystopian super fund with trails going in all directions like a heap of spaghetti hanging from a fork. Found my way over to North Mill Ave and crossed under the 202. Followed the Tempe Town Lake shoreline west to the pedestrian bridge, crossed to southern side, then took the Rio Salado Bike Path to Scottsdale Road and crossed back over to the north. Worked my way back to the van mostly using trails paralleling the way I had came in. Interesting mix of fun trails, hard trails, bike paths, crowds, and solitude. Merry Christmas Eve!

Great hike to do with kids. Took my 4 and 6 year old and it only took them 10 minutes from the parking lot to get up in the hole. Stairs make the climb easy. You see all sorts of people, ages, and footwear. The whole trip took us 30 minutes with 10 minutes up top.

Another day off and needed a bike ride. Did all the back trails and part of the canal, actually avoided hole in the rock which it appeared they were filming something over that way.

I needed another hike and this is close to home. I didn't really go to hole n the rock, I was distancing. I did however sneek in the back way and hike all around it and the back part of the zoo. Avoided many!

Had the opportunity to get a quick morning hike in with the Steeler game time moved. Radmila mentioned Papago Park, so we went there. I parked in the west lot and we took the long way around to the Hole in the Rock. Coldest day in recent memory. Frost on the grass and rooves when we left the neighborhood and it was still very chilly at the parking lot. didn't really start to warm up until we were done. Very few people on the trails until we were done. Kept the hike short, which seemed like the best thing to keep everyone happy, the cold weather didn't exactly help with enthusiasm. Still had a nice short morning hike with the family, followed by lunch at Portillo's.

After work hike. Was suppose to be a jog, but once again I wasn't feeling it halfway through the run :( . Started from the Evelynn Hallman park. Jogged down the canal and over to Hole in the Rock. Then to get some more mile continued northwest following user trails that led to the next large mountain/hill. Had to cross a street to get to the mountain. Initial thought was to jog around the mountain, but ended up doing all the user trails between the main trail that loops the mountain and the road that I had to cross. This had me doing a couple of user trails that paralleled the road rather closely. Followed them as they turned in a more westward direction and then looped back without ever getting on the main trail or circling the mountain. The "loop" that I did took place entirely on the east side of the mountain. This involved some low lying hills that I normally would coast right over. Not today :( . I ended up walking the last mile back to the TH.

4am departure from Safford to Phoenix.
Started the day with Lookout Mountain Summit - Short & sweet with a great early morning view from the top.
Then a drive over to Papago Park - Tomb Trail, Hole in the Rock & a walk up to Desert Botanical Garden. It was free admission day, but way too many people crowding in so we skipped the garden and headed back to Papago for a walk around the park.
Next up was a drive out to Tempe - Parked and walked up & down Mill Ave stopping at Starbucks for a quick energy boost before climbing up Hayden Butte. We then ended with a walk across Mill Ave bridge and down along Tempe Town Lake.
Last stop of the day was dinner at Nando's Mexican Cafe (A+) in Gilbert before the drive back home.
Pulled back into Safford just before 8pm ending a very enjoyable day trip!
:D
