Jason was looking for a quick hike nearby we could manage prior to the broiler oven starting up. We decided that Wedding Cake would be a good option. Short and scenic. We started up about 530am. The parking at the Hieroglyphic Trailhead had a few cars and braves souls when we started out, but it was about what I expected this time of year.

I have been up to this cool little hill multiple times and kept telling Jason it was a nice and easy climb up. Funny how my mind always filters out the crazy stuff. Working our way along the Lost Goldmine Trail over to the side trail that takes you to the top was the usual mild up and down. It was the instant up and more up that followed that reminded me that most of the elevation gain on this hike is compacted into less than a mile to the top. Oh well, it's a quick jaunt up from the LGM trail either way.

We had shade all the way until we made it to the little saddle after the first climb. Once in the sun, even before 7am, we could feel the heat starting up. We made it to the top, soaked in the cool views and enjoyed a "wake" of buzzards that were riding the thermals in-between perches. Fugly birds close up, but so graceful in the air. The effortless soaring and turning is hypnotic to watch. After a brief rest, we started back to the TH.

I like this little hill. It's short, has some elevation and great views. Thanks for coming along Jason. It’s always a pleasure to get in a hike with ya.

Met up with Andy for an early sunrise hike up to the top of Wedding Cake or Old Turks Head, whatever your preference. A couple of cars were at the Hiero TH when we arrived, with most heading up the Hieroglyphics trail. It was already warm at the start, but we were in the shade most of the way there. Easy hiking along the Lost Goldmine trail, then the grade increased as we started the climb up. It's pretty steep and has some scree towards the top, but nothing horrible. Great views on top, and we were treated to a family of Vultures soaring above us and even a couple that let us take some pics before leaving. The hike out was warm (93 degrees) but uneventful. A good little hike to get the blood flowing. Thanks for the invite, Andy.

A short hike up Old Turks Head. I saw a hiker who thought I looked like another guy who said this was his favorite hike. Same kind of thong happened on Mt Ord a few years back. My doppelganger gets around. I took the mountain bike trail over to Turks Head before circling back. Nice warm up stroll.

I saw some trails on the satellite view just north of the Lost Goldmine Trail. I made some tracks based on that and decided to go check them out for an easy Sunday morning hike. I got just a little bit into the first one when I saw a trail junction at the barbed wire fence head further north and uphill. I decided to start to follow that and it soon became obvious that this went to the summit of the Wedding Cake. I wasn't sure what the name of it is, but I knew I was heading to the top.

There is a very well defined trail all the way to the top. There's only one or two spots where it becomes steep with some scree. The climb is pretty easy and the views at the top are well worth the effort. Lots of really nice views all along Superstition Mountain, which looks a lot closer once you get a little higher.

On the way down I got back on the trails I marked with tracks and hiked those. One trail branched off to an area I didn't mark. It was mostly bare rock and marked with spray painted white dots. I don't get as hacked off as most AZ hikers about this, having seen this done in Europe and generally accepted there as an appropriate way to mark a trail. But in a few spots it was a little overkill. It was fun hiking these trails on the bare rock, much nicer that busting through vegetation or ankle bust loose rocks.

Once I got back to the flats, I hiked the dirt road between Turk's Head and Wedding Cake to it's terminus. On the way out to there, I saw to women walking down off of Turk's Head very casually, indicating that there must be an established trail there. On my way back down the road, I scouted over towards that area and found a few different trails that look like they head up there. One was marked with a cairn so that might be the ticket. Looks like another plan to make a trip out and head up there.

Took some dirt roads and bike trails back to the Hiero TH to make a loop out of it. Ended up doing fewer miles than I expected, but more AEG. Ended up having more fun on this hike than I expected. The parking lot was packed a usual, with the late arrivals circling the lot waiting for someone to leave.

I’d never done this section of the lost goldmine trail, figuring that it wouldn’t be that interesting. I was pleasantly surprised, particularly after adding on an ascent of both the “Birthday Cake” and Turks Head on the western end, and Shaka Cave and Waterfall on the eastern end.

Not much traffic on the trails. I just missed seeing a gila monster, but saw the photos of it taken by a couple of hikers who were a little ahead of me on the trail.

There are fairly well cairned routes up Bday and Turks, though I didn’t find the latter until bushwhacking halfway up.

Shaka Cave was pretty cool. Looked like a couple of grinding holes at the entrance.

I need to go back to the waterfall when it’s running.

Starting to get warm out there.

This was my first time hiking with ishamod since December, and we were looking for something relatively short today because he needed to be done by mid-afternoon. The Superstition side canyons work well in these situations, and neither of us had been to Turk's Backyard (Ermahgerd Canyon), so we picked that one.

We started from Hieroglyphic Trailhead just after sunrise and followed Lost Goldmine toward Old Turk's Head. The desert is very green right now, and the wildflowers are just starting to bloom. I'd only approached Old Turk's Head from the east side previously, which has no trail and gets brushy in places, so it was a surprise to find a well-worn use trail all the way up from the west/southwest.

We took a short break at the top and before starting down toward Turk's Backyard. There are some steep/loose areas on the northeast side that slowed things down a little, but it flattened out pretty quickly, and we eventually picked up a cairned route leading into the canyon that seems to get quite a bit of use--there was a cleared path through the brush that made things very easy.

The canyon wasn't as deep as I expected, and it didn't take long to reach the dryfall/rappelling area. From there, we could see the ladder and caves up above us to the right, where the canyon curves to the east. On our way up to the base of the ladder, we passed a lot of rusty scraps of metal that made us wonder if this was once an old mine site. Other than missing a rung near the bottom, the ladder was in good shape and felt sturdy...it reminded me of a less sketchy, more modern version of the rickety wooden ladder in Long Canyon in Sedona...we convinced a friend to climb that one a few years ago [ youtube video ] , so with a much stronger ladder here, climbing this one was a no-brainer :).

We went up to the ledge and took a closer look in the cave...there was more to see here than in Long Canyon. This one definitely looked like the remnants of a mining operation--there was a bolt in the rock and some metal equipment and thick pieces of rope inside the cave, and the opening appeared to go back 15+ feet and narrowed into a mine shaft. I'd be interested to know was mined there...another guano cave like Crucifix Canyon?

After exploring, we climbed back down, took a short lunch break, then followed the cairns back to Turk's Head and went up. There was one other person at the top who left just before we got there, then we returned on Lost Goldmine among the crowds of people. We saw multiple groups starting up/returning on the use trail toward Old Turks Head, so it seems like that one has gained popularity recently. Back near the trailhead, a helicopter flew over a few times and hovered near Hieroglyphic Spring for a few minutes before flying away.

This was a short, easy day--and shorter than expected--some of the similar routes I'd looked at were a few miles longer, but I think their GPSs added a bunch of distance when the signal got lost in Turk's Backyard. I had to do some major cleanup in Route Editor to get my track closer to an accurate distance/AEG. Regardless, it was fun to explore another one of the Superstition side canyons and great catching up with ishamod again. The forecast for today said strong winds, but we never had more than a light breeze, and the temperature was perfect.

My big plans to wake up early for the sunrise were dashed by my pesky business (darn customers giving me money so early in the day!). Oh well, I was able to unchain myself from my desk early and headed out to the Hieroglyphics Trailhead. I wanted to catch a sunset from Old Turks Head aka Peak 2777 aka the Wedding Cake. That's a lot of names for a little butte!

The parking lot was almost full when I arrived at 330pm. Once I got on the Lost Gold Mine Trail, I saw no other humans. Everyone was up at the petroglyphs.

I saw a route that @vanman posted that came in from the west side of the formation, so I loaded that one up. I've always come from the eastern side for this one. I guess I have been doing it wrong all these years. The western route to the top was very clear and cairned (and steep in some places). I didn't have to look at the route at all. I have my new way up to this one for sure.

The clouds were thick in the west, so I was convinced it would be a dud sunset. I stayed up top for a while and explored and then started down. As I descended, I could see Mr Sun might sneak out at the end. There was a little color right at sunset and then afterwards, some beautiful afterglow.

I saw one little tarantula on the way in and a steer on the way back. The only people I came across were coming back from the spring.

Perfect weather, a nice sunset (eventually) and some great views all along the way and up top. I love this area of the Supes!

I wanted a short hike with some elevation. I got to the Hieroglyphic trailhead a 6a with only 3 parking spots left? The crowd goes to the petroglyphs and the few take the Lost Goldmine trail. The humidity was high but not bad for a short hike.

We were looking for something a little shorter and easier today with @TBoneKathy recovering from a minor leg injury. We planned to start with a short hike to Shaka Cave and Carney Springs Waterfall so she could test the leg, and if it was feeling good, we'd tack on some other destinations to extend the hike. We started from Lost Goldmine East Trailhead around sunrise and were the only vehicle in the parking lot when we hit the trail. It was a little breezy, but already comfortable at ~60°.

Someone has painted white arrows on a lot of the rocks along the trail to the Wave Cave, some with "WC" added next to the arrows...especially pointless along such an obvious trail, even more so when all someone has to do to find the Wave Cave is follow the line of people. We veered right toward Carney Springs and took the social trail over to Shaka Cave. I noticed a few small pottery sherds just outside the cave when we arrived, and a few more, including a thicker piece, set in a recession in the rock wall above the grinding holes near the entrance. This cave is unique in that it's found in a standalone outcropping of rocks rather than in a canyon wall like so many others. It's a good size natural shelter and easily accessible, so it's not hard to imagine why it was an appealing habitation spot.

From there, we continued over to Carney Springs Waterfall, knowing it wouldn't be flowing today. Even dry, I was glad we made the short hike over there to check out it out...I'd noticed that spot from Carney Springs Trail over the years but didn't realize there was a social trail leading over there, and it's worthy of a return after it's rained.

TboneKathy was feeling pretty good, so we decided to extend the day. We considered hiking up to Robber's Roost and looping back on the cave route, but we decided to head over to Turk's Head instead. We've both hiked the Robber's Roost loop a few times, and we'd already seen 5-10 groups going up Carney Springs Trail and didn't want to deal with crowds at Robber's Roost. To be fair, some of the groups were probably lost Wave Cave hikers who weren't planning on going to Robber's Roost...

There were two people at Shaka Cave when we passed it on the way back, and the crowds were really starting to pour in as we got back on the Wave Cave route. Just as we passed the barbed wire fence and started west on Lost Goldmine, a group of lost hikers asked how to get to the Wave Cave. Apparently the giant opening visible in the canyon wall and white arrows every 15 feet still aren't obvious enough...

We hiked around to the west side of Turk's Head and started the climb. I hadn't seen anyone on the way up, but just as I approached the top and got a good look at the balanced rock, I heard voices and was disappointed to see a group of five at the summit. Fortunately, they were just starting down, so I ended up having the peak to myself for the few minutes I spent at the top. [ youtube video ] I didn't see a summit register up there, but recent triplogs show one up there, so I must have missed it. On the way down, another group of three was on their way up. At least they didn't ask for Wave Cave directions...

Since we were so close to Old Turk's Head, I wanted to head over there before we hiked out. @TBoneKathy waited below while I hiked around the east side. It wasn't a bad bushwhack...a little steep in places, but it was easy to avoid the worst of the brush, and I didn't encounter much catclaw or many thorns. I approached the peak from the north, which provided a fairly straightforward path to the top without much loose rock. I found the flatter/wider summit more enjoyable than Turk's Head...and not just because there were no people around this time :). [ youtube video ]

I headed back down, and it was a flat, easy hike back to Lost Goldmine Trailhead. It was a beautiful day, and this was the first hike of the year where the temperature topped 80°. It was nice to see four new destinations in the Superstitions despite all the people out on the trails today...but that's to be expected on these easier hikes around Peralta.

It’s been a while since I’ve hiked in this area so I decided to head out and hit the Wedding Cake. The Hieroglyphic Trailhead was just about full when I arrived at 4pm. It appears most of those folks were up at Hieroglyphics Canyon looking at the petroglyphs, but I did run across 4 different groups of hikers along the Lost Goldmine Trail on the way out.

The trail to the base is nice. It’s been many, many moons since I have hiked up Old Turks Head. I had a route loaded up, but I just looked for the best way I could find on the way up. It got a little steep on the way to the base, but not too bad. I eventually got on “the trail” right at the top.

I was hoping for a nice sunset, but as soon as I reached the summit, the low clouds basically blocked the sun. I got a few pictures and started down. I kinda/sorta followed the route I had loaded, but then just veered off and made my own “trail”. I thought I heard a larger animal at the base rustling in the bush and went to investigate. I missed whatever it was. Lots of deer/sheep scat all along this little mountain. I was hoping to see one. But, alas, it avoided me. Glad it wasn’t a hungry lion!

The sunset did get vivid far off on the horizon about 30 minutes after sunset, but I just hoofed it back to the trailhead. When I arrived back to the dark TH, my truck was the lone vehicle left.

A nice hike, perfect weather and an afternoon well spent!

Got back up the Wedding Cake and went from the summit to the north end of the middle layer and followed the edge of that band clockwise to the south side. It got pretty windy by then and some cool clouds started forming over the mountain but it was time to head back.

This is also known as the Wedding Cake. After looking down at it so many times from up in Chuparosa Canyon, we finally decided to check it out! The trail off Lost Goldmine is easy to follow and provides a nice workout to get to the middle layer. It's about another 10 minutes to the top from there and the views are worth it!

I've seen a few triplogs about Turks Head this year, so I added it to my to do list. I didn't realize there was another one nearby, Old Turks Head, until I started planning the hike. I drew up plans to hike both together. @wallyfrack recently hiked Peak 2777 so I asked him for some guidance on his route to the top. I used the official route for Peak 2822.

I started from the Hieroglyphic TH and took the Lost Goldmine Trail to a spur trail, which takes you straight to the peak 2777 summit. I didn't find the going as easy as Wally did, but he's at or near the top of the HAZ food chain - I'm not  . The trail was easy to follow though and I was soon up top enjoying the views.

On my way back down, I took the mountain bike trail, also mentioned in Wally's triplog, east towards Peak 2822. I wouldn't ride a mountain bike on that trail, but I'm sure the more adventurous bikers find it exhilarating, just as I did using only my legs. I must have missed a turn on the bike trail because I lost it near the end. No matter, I was close enough to the bottom that I just made my way down to the road below and headed over to Turks Heads.

I used the official route going up to the summit. I found it odd that there were no cairns down low so I just stayed with the route I loaded on Route Scout. I had to continually verify that I was on the correct track because the route isn't obvious. After a few hundred yards, cairns appeared and the route was easy to follow the rest of the way. On the way down, I followed the cairned route to the bottom. Shorter route, much easier to follow. At the cairn at the bottom of the route, there are two use paths. The official route goes left. Take the one to the right instead.

On top of peak 2822, I signed the bottom of the last page of the summit register. If anyone is going up soon, please bring a new one. And a pencil sharpener. I took a break just below the summit for a snack and some water, then headed back down and returned to the Hieroglyphic TH.

Just a few cars in the lot when I started at 8:25. Quite a few more when I finished, but by no means busy. I passed two couples on the trail, one on the way out and the other on the way back. The sky was hazy as I drove to the TH, but clear near the mountain. There was a flag whipping breeze as I drove down Kings Ranch Rd. It was windy at both summits, but the weather was gorgeous otherwise.

Great hike. I would definitely do this again.

Wanted to see if the collared ram photographed by Wally was still in the neighborhood. Breezy day was getting warm until the cloud cover came in later. Second outing of the day so later than usual start. Followed the well cairned route up to the top ,there will be some cholla on the ground that may jump up, didn’t care for the last part going under the overhanging rocks after observing multiple broken off pieces on the ground. One other hiker up top we mumbled at each other something about not expecting company. Lingered for awhile scanning the area with binoculars but no wildlife spotted, specifically no posing bighorn :( Thought about adding a circumference of Turks Head but decided against and headed back, passed only one couple heading out on Lost Goldmine on my way back.

I wanted something easy and had not been up on Peak 2777 so off I went. I started from Hieroglyph trailhead. There is a nice spur trail all the way up Old Turks Head and it never gets too steep. The summit was easy and the views nice. On the way down I noticed a spur trail made by mountain bikers so I took that farther east instead of using the Lost Goldmine trail. As I was hiking down toward the old road by Turks Head I heard some noise off to my left. A Big Horn Ram was milling around the saddle. I stopped and took several photos of the ram who has a collar on. I reconnected with Lost Goldmine trail and hiked a little father east to get some more miles in before heading back. The early morning has very windy but the winds calmed after a few hours. When I returned to the trailhead there was a line of about five vehicles waiting for a parking spot. A nice morning to be out on the trail.

We had hiked up to Turk’s Head a couple of weeks ago and decided to see what Old Turks Head had in store. (I’m curious about the names. Anybody have any info?) No real trail here - we pretty much blazed our own way to the top - I’m sure the most difficult way one could! Beautiful day to be out in the Superstitions!
