It was my turn to pick so I found a unique hike we haven't hiked often with an easy 4,288 aeg, breezy enchanting 67.4 -79.82 degrees. We settled on a flat death march in near-freezing conditions with one good ascent.

Highline Trail #31
I enjoy the segment we hiked today in peak Autumn foliage. It is loaded with pines and a good mix of nice oaks. It's crystal clear the AZT does not maintain this portion. Large portions of the tread are in good to very good condition. A few turns are not clear or misleading. Some of the grades flaunt Y Bar tread.

Myrtle Trail #30
This is a wildly nice trail with the best views.

General Crook Trail #130 - Coconino NF
When in Rome. Somebody slipped one past the goalie, it's getting trail maintenance.

Babe Haught Trail - Hatchery to Knoll Lake
The top half challenges my wuss balance, otherwise nice views. I dry heaved after the flat treatment, downed a bunch of cold water, and felt fine. I'll never hear the end of it... lol

Synopsis
Enchanting weather, fun company, pocket lint exciting rim hikes aren't my thing but there were nice portions.

A beautiful morning/day for a hike. Temps in the low 40's to start, 60's for highs with a nice breeze all day that helped drone out the whining.

Highline Trail #31
Heading CW from the still closed Hatchery, it was 7.5-ish miles of roller-coastering views to the rim. You pass over numerous smooth red-rock areas, through conifers and lush riparian areas as you approach the Pyle ranch area. We missed a turn to stay on the Highline at one point and followed a use trail next to Ellison Creek. Discovering our error, we went cross country to rejoin.

Myrtle Trail #30
Reaching this intersection, we noticed 3 people and machinery, performing trail maintenance just to the west on the Highline Trail. Hopefully they'll get to the east of Myrtle also.

There is still no sign at the intersection with the Highline.
[ photo ] , but the area is recovering from the Highline fire prior to our 2018 hike. [ photo ]
The climb up the Myrtle trail gives you a chance to catch some great views and your breath.
It's a 1 mile, 1100' climb to the top, for the most part a good trail and a steady grade.

General Crook Trail #140 - Apache SitgreavesNF
We used the Crook to make our way over to Myrtle Point. There has been some very recent maintenance to the trail. Someone has flagged and has been doing a great job to bring it back. I'm curious as to who or what organization as well as what sections they are doing.
We stopped at Myrtle Lake for some lunch and were able to take in the views without the Memorial Day boat and water-skiing traffic. We also found Lost Lake.

Myrtle Point 7920
First time out to this point. We took FR300C in and an old overgrown, decommissioned logging road back out to Trail 300. A short break with good views.

Babe Haught Trail - Hatchery to Knoll Lake
We did some cross country to cut off some mileage to the Babe. The Babe is still its typically steep rocky drop back down to the TH.

Good times with the crew, squad, flock or whatever they're calling it now.

Next time, I'll hike this starting from Campo Cinco, since now I'm familiar with the route. If I'd realized there was a ridiculous register, that trash would have been hauled out.

Drove down the rim road and hit up five random draws across a stretch from Bear Canyon to Bear Canyon Lake when I saw some colors. A few spots were as good as I've seen in several years up here. It looks like there are spots where the aspens and maples are in alignment this year, which isn't always the case. Enough areas with plenty of green still showing which warrants another visit next week!

Tracie the Intrepid and I had been to Myrtle Point once before, about 2.5 years ago, and we were looking for a hike to do up on the Rim, so we decided to go there again. I had never been on the Myrtle Trail before, and had never been on the section of the Highline Trail between the Fish Hatchery and the Myrtle Trail, so I decided to make a loop hike out of it; actually I got the idea from a hike that @hikerdw did earlier this year.

We started west on the Highline Trail, and we were on the trail for about 8.5 miles until we got to the Myrtle Trail. The first few miles of the Highline Trail were really nice -- we were hiking on smooth red rocks, and it reminded me of being in Sedona. After a few miles the trail was a bit less interesting, and there was a bit of uphill to get to the Myrtle Trail.

The Myrtle Trail was a nice trail to take up to the Rim. It was a bit steep, but there were a few switchbacks and for the most part the trail followed the contour of the mountain getting up to the top.

Once on the Rim, we took the Rim Road and the General Crook Trail to FR 300C, the turnoff to Myrtle Point. It was an easy walk to Myrtle Point from there. The views are nice at the highpoint, although I like being up on Promontory Butte better.

Once back at the Rim Road-FR 300C junction, we took the Rim Road for aways, and then bushwhacked for a bit, and followed some other forest roads and logging roads to the Babe Haught Trail, which took us back to the starting point.

This hike was longer than what I expected it to be. The temperature was warmer than normal and there were no clouds in the sky and very few trees, so there was lots of sun exposure. If I ever did the hike again, I'd pick a cooler day!

I enjoyed the hike, but if you only want to bag Myrtle Point, there are shorter and easier ways to get there.

We saw a couple of trees with some fall color, but that was about it; however, there were very few hardwoods, so there are better places to go for seeing fall foliage.

Since I had never been to the Tonto Fish Hatchery, Knoll Lake, or Myrtle Point, and had never hiked on the Babe Haught Trail, I decided to kill 4 birds with one stone and knock off all 4 on one hike. Tracie, my intrepid hiking partner, and I began the hike at the Fish Hatchery and took Babe Haught Trail #143 up to Rim Road 300. From there we crossed the Rim Road and took Babe Haught Trail #88 to Knoll Lake, and we reversed course by taking Trail #88 back to the Rim Road. Then we made about a 3.25 mile death march down Rim Road 300 to Trail #300C, which after about 3/4 of a mile took us to Myrtle Point. Lastly, we took Trail #300C back to the Rim Road; marched down the Rim Road for 3.25 miles back to Babe Haught Trail #143; and then took Trail #143 back to the Fish Hatchery.

I thought that Babe Haught Trail #143 was a nice one -- in my eyes it is not as nice as the See Canyon Trail as far as getting up to the Rim, but it is far, far better than going to the Rim on either the Horton Spring Trail or the Promontory Trail. Babe Haught Trail #143 had a good bit of sun exposure for the first two miles(note to self: next time, if it is a warm sunny day don't wear a long sleeve black shirt), but it was in pretty good shape and mostly easy to follow. Once we got up closer to the Rim, there were lots of big trees that provided some filtered shade.

Babe Haught Trail #88 was a delightful trail -- there were lots of big pine trees along the trail and there were numerous LARGE cairns that made the trail easy to follow. Whoever made the cairns must have gone to graduate school in cairn making.

Knoll Lake was really low in water, which made it a bit of a disappointment. At first I thought that the lake was completely dry, but we went a bit farther and found some water.

Myrtle Point had some really nice views, and I enjoyed being there. To get to the logbook, don't follow Road 300C all the way to its end; instead, once you get close to the edge of the rim, veer off to the right of the road a bit. I know that HAZ gives credit to Promontory Butte for being the high point in Gila County, but some sources say that Myrtle Point shares the county high point with Promontory Butte. I do not know, but my GPS recorded them both at about 7,940 feet, so they seem pretty close to me. I cannot say for sure which is higher, but since I have been to both I guess that I can say that I have been to the Gila County high point.

We saw 4 deer (on Babe Haught Trail #143 as we got within 1/4 mile or so of the Rim Road) and one coyote (on Road 300C not far from the edge of the rim).

Note that the route that I posted does not include about the first 3/4 mile of the hike. Somehow, the GPS did not reset when I started the hike, and I did not notice it until after we had gone 3/4 of a mile. At that point, I reset the track and started recording from there.

If you wanted to skip hiking to Knoll Lake and just go to Myrtle Point, the hike would be about 13.5 miles with an AEG of a bit over 2,000'.
