Went with Chris M. to do a late night hike in Picture rocks. Started at Ringtail trail at 10:45 pm. Took Ringtail trail to Picture rocks wash to unmarked trail to Yuma mine and then back down. We finished the hike around 1:30 am. We saw a few ringtail cats. Temps started out around 85 F and slowly fell to about 79 F by the time we finished. It was comfortable the entire time. Night hikes are great in Tucson in June, July, August...

This was a night hike. I decided to go back to this area to find the better trail going to Yuma mine and explore another unmarked trail that I was unfamiliar with. I was able to find good trails this time!

The trailhead where I started was 32.32562, -111.120143. I stopped to take a few photos of the petroglyphs. In picture rocks wash on the way out, I saw a pair of eyes looking at me. Seemed like it could have been a coyote or bobcat.

There's a pretty good use trail that goes all the way to Yuma mine which appeared to be an old road. I took another trail going East just to see where it went and ran into a private property sign (see route). But, according to the satellite map, it appeared that this trail continued East and ran into the Vertical Cliffs trail.

Took Vertical Cliffs Trail over to Yuma Mine Wash. Hoped I could follow the fence line of Saguaro West to make it over, but cactus and other growth was too thick. Backtracked and took Vertical Cliffs over to Coyote Pass Trail to Cactus Canyon to Picture Rocks Wash Trail to the turnoff to the mine at the Ringtail Trail junction.

Arrived at the mine to see it was gated off with warnings and threats of steep fines and months in jail, so I didn’t check it out. Rather than going all the way back around, we bushwhacked up the ridge to get a good view of the mine below, then back down the ridge to Coyote Pass. On the way out we took Abington to Veterans to Animal Wash Trail, and back.

1st trip
Late Start Today but the weather was in the low 80's so we headed to Saguaro Park West to do a loop that would take us to Yuma Mine. Last time we did this hike I missed the neatest part of Yuma Mine (don't Know how I managed that, chalk it up to a senior moment). We started out at the trail head on W Belmont Road and took the Vertical cliffs Trail. Not an interesting trail, rocky with a very gradual climb. Took the veteran trail south to the Abington Trail then west to the Gila Monster and Coyote Pass Trail. Nothing spectacular about these trails but it is a nice scenic and pleasant walk. Was tempted to check out an old mine along the Coyote Pass Trail but abandon that idea. Took Picture Rock Wash to where the route to Yuma Mine takes off. No real indication where this trail route leaves Picture Rock Wash but head in the general vicinity of the mine and the route becomes quite clear. On this trip the mine was quite visible, don't know how I missed it the last time other than possibly the sun was near the horizon and didn't see it. Interesting mine and still in pretty good condition, usually these things get vandalized. The entrances are closed off with steel which was ok with me, didn't really desire to go in them, plenty to see from outside. Cross countried to Yuma Mine Wash and took the Vertical Cliffs trail back to our start point. No wild life to report other than the usual Red tailed hawk, buzzard, cotton tails and lizards. Only one other person on the trail and she was a jogger on the Veteran Trail. No need for a water report, its the desert around Tucson after a poor monsoon season.

With the slightly cooler weather Ginny and I headed to Saguaro National Park west to the Picture Rock Trail head. We did a hodge podge of trails for a 6 mile hike. fairly easy walking although it felt a little warm toward the end of the hike. No water along any of the trails as was expected. Nothing out of the ordinary on this hike but it was scenic. Will have to plan another trip soon to catch some of the trails we didn't hit today

With this hike in Saguaro National Park West I will have completed my goal to hike all the official trails of the park and a few unofficial. It is actually ironic that I lived in Tucson almost my whole life and only hiked one trail in this park and that was back in 1970. This hike starts out on West Belmont Road on the far Northeast side of the park and travels along the Vertical Cliffs Trail, Abington Trail and Animal Wash Trail. I took a side trip to the Yuma Mine and also tried out a route between the Picture Rocks Wash Trail and the Vertical Cliffs Trail. The highlight of the hike of coarse was the Yuma Mine, lots of history covering 140 years. The mine was left as it was when it shut down in the 1980's and the subsequent clean up of the gold mining cyanide and eventual turn over to the park in early 2000's. The wood building below the mine are gone but the wood structure that leads into the main mine is still there. Spent about an hour looking around this area. From the mine I continued on along an old road that leads to the Picture Rocks Wash Trail. I returned to the Vertical Cliffs Trail and continued on the loop to the Abington and Animal Wash trails. At the junction with the Vertical Cliffs and Abington Trail there is an Aermotor wind mill that I found out is still operating when the wind picked up. Not sure if it is pumping water I didn't think to look that close. I continued west on the Abington Trail for .2 miles to the Junction with the Gila Monster Trail. I didn't know these trails in the far Northeast side of the park existed until a few weeks ago when I was hiking the Gila Monster Trail I saw the sign for the Abington Trail. Many of the park maps do not list any of these trails I'm doing today, Especially the Yuma Mine since it is not an official trail. The hike back along the Abington and Animal wash Trails was uneventful with your usual lower desert scenery. This trail is best done early in the morning or evening when the sun does it's thing enhancing the color of the scenery. Now that Iv'e finished Saguaro National Park West I will have to plan my next area, I am eyeing the Galiuros and of coarse the Superstitions.
