It was a beautiful day to be off from work so I hit flatiron for the first time this season and threw in the ironing board since I have never been there. It was a great day although not as many flowers as I expected. The flowers that were there sure were great though. Great day!

RouteScout crashed and dumped all my routes today, so the included route for this hike is not an actual track, but one I created in a map editor. Also kind of lame and sad that Peak 3845' had a summit jar essentially full of garbage. Scouted several areas searching for existing and possible climbing routes. Most definitely some with potential if one enjoys big approaches. :)

Arrived early planning to beat the heat and crowds, at least I beat the heat. Steady influx of vehicles from 0600 , I had forgotten a lot of schools closed today. Temperatures were mild and there was lots of cloud cover, hazy day so views were not the best. Hikers were actually fairly spread out along Siphon Draw on the way up either to the basin or Flatiron. I took the less traveled path to head over to 3845. Most deer scat I’ve seen along this route but no live ones spotted despite having this ridge to myself after leaving the saddle above the basin. Rerouted a few folks heading up the drainage toward 4102 instead of Flatiron. Again went for the Palmer Mine Loop and then Treasure loop descent to finish it off. Was just warming up as the sun was breaking through as I finished.

Waffled between the Goldfields and the Supes and the Supes won. Took the road that leads to First Water TH, but utilized the first parking area when I turned downed this road. I have found that this is a convenient way to get into Dutchman Park without having to pay the entry fee. Took a user trail that quickly connects to the Jacob Crosscut which got me Siphon Draw. Started just before 7am so it was a little dark initially, but by the time I reached the Draw there was plenty of light. Embarrassed to say the Draw had me puffing like a steam engine. It seems steeper at 51. Met 7 hikers up to this point, (2 were already heading down), but when I turned off the Flatiron I had the “trail” to myself. Unable to download routes currently, but I was hopeful that I would be able to fine Peak 3845. Trail was pretty obvious once I turned off the Flatiron. There was one solid trail with various threads that seemed to “fray” off the main one as I hiked in. Almost immediately there was a pretty neat rock formation that was worthy of admiration. I ended up going off the main trail and following one of the threads that seemed to gain elevation faster. It soon lost its definition but I did come across cairns as I made my way up through the brush. When I reached the “top” it turned out to be a slope that gradual rose to the base of the Flatiron. Along the slope there were 3-4 prominences. Not knowing exactly where 3845 was, I decided to climb up to the prominences. I ended up stopping just shy of the base. Pretty cool view! The feeling of isolation, however, wasn’t as strong as I would have thought. Sounds from the Flatiron trail carry very well...and it sounded busy! I kept looking around to see who else was out there with me until I realized the noise was coming from the trail. To add to the cacophony someone was flying a drone from the top of Flatiron...probably providing some killer views. So much for solitude. When it comes to elevation, I don’t have much faith in my Garmin. According to it I topped out around 4100ft. On the way down I checked out all the prominences on the off chance they might be 3845. No luck, but they were neat to check out and 1 offered sweet views of the Draw. On the way down I went out to a mildly mounded hill overlooking the valley and sure enough....Peak 3845! Views would have been great, but the haze was bad today. Hard to appreciate anything beyond the Goldfields. When I headed down I followed another cairned route which was slightly less overgrown than the one I used on my ascent. When I reached the lower shelf I came upon the well established user trail that took me back to the Flatiron trail. (Note: I rejoined this well established user trail in mid route. I took it east to get back to the Flatiron, but it continued west from where I joined it. Not sure where it ends up. It might lead to “Peak 3845”, but I don’t think it does. Steph and Blake’s register is about 100ft higher than where this trail seems to run). When I rejoined the “super highway” I did my best to social distance. Probably passed close to 50 hikers as I made my way down Siphon Draw. Took Jacob’s Crosscut to get back to the parking area. Apparently the Supes were busy. There was a ranger stationed there cautioning every vehicle as they were driving by not to park on the side of the road but to use designating parking.

Parked in the Saguaro lot at Lost Dutchman just as the sun was rising , the clouds made for some nice colors, also they helped keep in yesterday’s heat as it was already 80°. Took the Discovery Trail over to Siphon Draw and started up only seeing 3 other hikers ahead of me encountered no one coming down at that time. The cloud cover and breeze kept the temperature reasonable but my t shirt attested to the humidity. The basin was empty of people and water. The trail to 3845 was better cairned than my last trip, lots of deer evidence along the way but no wildlife spotted. The “summit “ register jar was resting in it’s cairn, didn’t feel like pulling the register out of the narrow neck jar. Siphon Draw Trail was busier on the way down easily encountering more than a dozen, about the time I spotted two young men perched on top of the Gateway I met a couple from Show Low area who started shouting up to have them drop a rope down :D Decided to make a loop on the way back using Prospector Trail, Treasue Loop and Crosscut to return to the trailhead, was definitely getting warm by time I finished.

First Arizona hike in June since I retired 6 years ago :D Decided at last minute to not drive to Payson so instead parked near Crosscut Trailhead. Once on Siphon Draw Trail from Jacob’s trail I entered ahead of a couple of hikers and behind a couple so tried to keep socially distanced from both so pace was faster than usual to the saddle, at least there was some cloud and mountain provided shade. That was tiring but after a few minutes rest managed to unseat myself and head over to the ridgeline for 3845 , decided to not do the final push up through the vegetation in the warming full sun instead taking in a birds eye view of the Crying Dinosaur and then the former Mining Camp restaurant site before finally starting back. On the way back decided to use Prospector and Treasure loop to reacquire Jacob’s trail. Feeling some energy rebound from a slowed pace decided to go up to the base of Praying Hands before the descent down Treasure Loop. The trails were all clear and surrounded by dry vegetation, no wildlife today. The wind was primarily coming from the southwest so the smoke from the ongoing Sawtooth fire was drifting to the northeast obscuring usual views to the East while westward views were also hazy today. Hope we get a couple of cooler days this month , it was 81° out there at 0600 today.

Weather forecast was not inviting for hikes to the east, plus wasn’t up for any long drive today. Planned for a destination of solitude but required using typically busy Jacob’s Trail and Siphon Draw Trail ,was hoping a weekday would help.Sacrificed some sleep time for an early start and saw no one until reaching Siphon Draw Trail , spotted two pairs and one trio heading up, concluded they must be younger as they steadily increased their distancing. Wildflowers still fairly abundant but showing signs of fading . Once on the saddle above the basin took a right to the “trail”, first south then west was mostly visible despite the heavy foxtail influx. Had a snack at the summit cairn ,enjoyed the views and increased breeze, explored the ridgeline a bit toward the base of Flatiron, consideration for Spirit Canyon evaporated and started back, surprised by the appearance of a couple at the summit area.Took a different path down from the low point on the saddle ,it’s now more of a bushwhack being almost completely overgrown. Back down to the basin a few other hikers around but not a crowd, small stagnant pool at the base of the waterfall. Now later in the morning the volume of hikers coming up Siphon Draw increased, decided when meeting them to stop ahead and pull way over , as it turns out moving a few feet off the trail and coiling up like a rattlesnake was not the best strategy. The information here sign must have been on , as each family group passed there were questions and lots of them, how far is it, how long will it take, do we stay to the left, are there snakes here, where am I , what’s the meaning of life etc. ](*,) Escaped by finishing on Jacob’s trail and Prospector , patience now left behind new strategy when passing the few hikers I saw , stare at my watch and jog by while muttering, no more questions for the crazy old man. Even the two horses and riders I met eyed me suspiciously. Did enjoy the weather today remained cool and breezy all day, maybe not so good for allergy victims.

The waterfall at siphon draw was dry today ,only a pool at the bottom and the way up was much less slippery today than a couple of weeks ago.Decided to go to one of my favorite viewpoints , saw evidence of deer and sheep but nothing on the hoof. Added in Prospector View Trail and Treasure Loop to get a little extra mileage after parking in Lost Dutchman Park. Cool and breezy and shady at the start and sunny and pleasant at the finish. Saw no one else today past Siphon Draw even on Siphon Draw traffic was light. Looked like rocks on the lower portion of the wash to Flatiron were decorated with brown painted directional arrows😡

Renewing my state park pass let me get started from Cholla parking instead of as last time Crosscut Trailhead. Managed to get moving about 0830, took Discovery trail first over to Siphon Draw Trail in order to make a loop and finish on Treasure Loop trail ,looks like the new additional parking for Siphon Draw Trailhead is finished. Appears the detour to Siphon Draw Trail is becoming permanent in order to move traffic away from the new cabins. Getting a little warm heading up to Siphon Draw as it was too late in the am for shade. Not as deserted as you might think for May, kept behind one hiker and ahead of 3 others up to the saddle above the bowl where I turn right or south. A brief rainstorm last night left a small pool at the base of the waterfall , the rocks above it appeared wet where it had dripped down, water was not running down the bowl. On the way back noticed another half dozen hikers going up before I made the Crosscut Trail junction, just as I was turning I surprised a Gila Monster on the trail who “sprinted “ under a bush. Took a break in the graffiti cave , my term for it, on the way to Praying Hands a breeze made it a pleasant break stop. An already large cairn is growing in the saddle between the cave and Praying Hands, not sure why. Saw more hikers on the upper portion of Treasure Loop as I was coming down to it. Another good morning for hiking but getting a bit toasty in the afternoon.

Realized as I was leaving home that my park pass expired last week so decided to start at the Crosscut Trailhead. About a dozen cars there only one other hiker heading in direction of the park. Took Crosscut Trail to Siphon Draw Trail , variety of wildflowers present mostly brittle brush. The little used path to 3845 from the saddle above the bowl had heavy vegetation, difficult to see the path or rocks or snakes if there. Today was the first time I ever noticed a register up there tucked away in a cairn, an old glass jar covered with duct tape, first entry states started 3/18, had a couple of entries from Steph and Blake. There are several old campsites located around the high point ,then headed down to the “saddle” of the ridgeline which for several years was my usual destination up here , much more overgrown than before, the recent rains and lack of use likely the reasons. Finally headed down from the ridgeline slow dancing around some prickly pears and back to the bowl. Decided to create a bubble in my route by going up to Praying Hands via prospector trail before going back to the Crosscut Trailhead. Was getting a little warm near the end but a nice breeze all day.

Decided to hike”Flat Iron lite” on this nice cool am, anticipating nice views with 700 feet less climbing. In the past have frequently seen wildlife, deer or sheep on the slope below the ridgeline in this quieter less traveled area. I wasn’t that early today ,about an 0730 start but apparently I was the first one up Siphon Draw Trail this am, when I reached the bowl I noticed the waterfall had lost its trickle from a couple of weeks ago. Then on getting above the bowl but below the saddle in the draw on the left ,the route to 4102, was a small herd of bighorn sheep, I counted at least 9, I remained still a bit then went up on some smooth rock just below the saddle and assumed a sniper position. The bighorns either did not notice me or deemed me not a threat, I was able to observe them for awhile very entertaining as they continued grazing and rock hopping back and forth across the draw , too bad one of the real haz photographers were not around, tried a few shots with my phone just a little too far away for decent pictures.Anyway I believe there is an unwritten rule about the more and heavier photo equipment you bring the less likely you see anything. Finally after 20 to 30 minutes some other hikers came up the bowl and the sheep began moving further away up the draw. Encountering wildlife always makes a hike more memorable.

Started at Lost Dutchman Park, boy the campground has sure cleared out. Appears they are still finishing up the cabins also they have cleared out about 100 feet of vegetation along the road from the saguaro parking lot to the siphon draw lot, not sure if they are increasing the parking, amazing that a few years back they were going to close this park! Glad that did not happen. Traveled up siphon draw trail to the saddle above the bowl ,came up on a young couple who were heading up the route I was taking and redirected them to the wash going up to flat iron.Again in my opinion unless you are going to peak 5024 you can have the same view from 3845 as flat iron. Saw quite a bit of evidence deer are using this route, but did not see any deer or sheep today. Again took the prospectors trail and treasure loop to finish up. The breeze today made it pleasant for hiking but it was getting warm when I finished up about noon.

Nice day for a hike , though a little breezy, especially at the top and in siphon draw,, took the Prospect trail and treasure loop to add some distance.Did an inventory of Lost Dutchman State Park for rattlesnakes,my count remains at zero.

Wanted to thank Steph and Blake for describing this hike which puts a name on a place that I’ve frequently visited. This has a low degree of difficulty for route finding but just wanted to add before the final ascent to this peak you will be traveling on a level portion of the path heading northwest and if you miss the cairn for the hard left to ascend to the peak in a short distance you cliff out at a rock formation overlooking the site of the former Mining Camp restaurant, can check the views from here and or just turn around and look for the missed turn now on the right. Also there is immediately when you make the hard left another fainter path that leads to a “saddle” a little southeast and below the peak which also will work just turn right from the “saddle”to reach the high point. On prior trips but not today, after reaching this peak I would typically travel along the top of the ridge leading south east to gradually ascend and arrive at the bottom of the cliff below flat iron, by the way if you do this watch for falling objects, etc.,,and then I would return or occasionally go left or east to run into the wash going to flat iron not saying it’s a good way to go to flat iron just an alternative. After the first time to the 3845 peak I quit going to flat iron unless to accompany visitors. The view from this peak to the west over the valley to me is the same as flat iron without the extra 700 foot elevation gain,if I’m going to go all the way up the wash then I’m heading to 5024 for the panorama view. On a few occasions particularly in rainy years have been treated to seeing bighorn sheep and deer along this ridge,no wildlife seen today and is typical no other hikers. Today the extra mileage was adding in treasure loop on the way back to the saguaro parking lot . Pretty crowded in the park and siphon draw trails today lots of young spring breakers attempting flat iron. I had to turn back a couple of them following me who thought I was on the route to flat iron. By the way I thought another possible name for this particular hike could be flat iron lite.

It was a beautiful day to take our granddaughter, Natalie, on a hike. I knew she likes to do some scrambling and boulder-hopping and had done an 8 mile hike in the not-too-distant past. So, we thought she'd be up for this one. Between me and Natalie, I was the one that was a little nervous. There were a few spots where falling could be a disaster and she's not accustomed to hiking in close proximity to all those pointy, nasty things we have in the Superstitions. After making her aware of what plants could hurt and which ones are "tame", she deftly avoided getting stabbed. And she was 100% up for the scrambling, even when I had her lead the way.

The other thing that got me worried along the way was the continual elevation gain. Blake and I are used to hikes that just go up, and up, and up. So, I didn't remember this hike as having a healthy AEG. I found myself telling Natalie "this is the last push, from here on out it's a breeze" - only to see another scramble up ahead. Truthfully, I don't know why I was worried, she didn't tire out and never complained.

We made it to the top, enjoyed lunch, she found the summit log (thanks syoung!), and we hiked closer to the edge to find our home (with the help of binos). Natalie survived her first bee sting and a skinned knee. And despite her fatigue (due to the heat) during the last mile, she still told her mom and dad that the hike was a 9.5 out of 10! :y:

Saw this new description and figured I'd give it a go today. I was interested if it was the place I ended up with a friend back when I started hiking. She knew the way to Flatiron, as the story goes, and I was blind apparently, thus we ending up here. We were able to finally reach Flatiron a day or two later. While the location we ended up in was not this peak, I was able to stumble upon that locale and even found the rock I managed to wedge into the wall to commemorate the experience..

This is a nice little side excursion that offers up a unique vantage of Flatiron. I Definitely recommend checking it out.

It was a beautiful day for a hike and we enjoyed scoping out a challenge for our 13-year old granddaughter. She's coming out later this month and we're hoping she can also make it to the top and find the secret hidden in the cairn. I'm sure she'd be tickled to read other hiker's comments.

We think this would be a great alternative to Flatiron for folks that feel that last, steep push would be too much. Or perhaps this would be a good test to see if you're ready to conquer Flatiron.
