Once Consolidated Canal crosses Lindsay Rd., the Maricopa Trail is a concrete path, on the east side of the canal, the remainder of the way to Park of the Canals. The next major road crossing — Guadalupe Rd. — is also busy, unsignalled and unprotected.

Past that, every major street crossing is signalled and protected. I used the signal to cross Baseline Rd., but after that waited for breaks in traffic, then jogged across, rather than make the vehicles wait another 20 seconds afterwards. 😇

In the early Gilbert miles, the west side had small horse properties. Yet, every time I switched sides, so would the corrals. Doh!

I never did share this segment with horses. Bicycles were another story: There were tons of them, often in groups of a dozen or more riders. Some even being pedalled. I have no love for “eBikes”, but an even worse phenomenon is small, gas-powered, bikes that zip along at 30 mph. After one blasted past me, he turned left on Brown Rd. It was so loud, I could hear him for a minute after he disappeared! :pk:

Meadowgreen Park and Blue Moon Park had trailside cabanas and water fountains. There are no rest rooms, unless you count the Whataburger on Broadway Rd.

On the far side of Blue Moon Park, Consolidated Canal terminates at a large division gate. Tempe Canal continues west, while the cement Maricopa Trail path turns north along the east side of the South Canal. Because I was not continuing ten miles to Granite Reef Dam, I crossed to the west side of South Canal for the final short stretch to Park of the Canals. (SRP History of Arizona Canals)

I’ve now completed 161.94 miles of the Maricopa Trail.

Not much grows in the vicinity of a canal, other than occasional creosote, brittlebush and African daisy.

I recently bought a GoPro ball-joint mount, which allows the camera to simultaneously rotate through both the x- and y-axis. Coverage is nearly 1080°, except through the mount itself.

Besides my route, my other plan for today was to change the GoPro’s angle every mile or so, showing the beauty ahead of me, to my right, below me, to my left, and of my own smiling mug.

From I-10, there’s a zippy little drop into Guadalupe. A FedEx semi took the marked speed bump at speed. 😬

The crushed gravel path on the south side of Guadalupe Rd. was the firmest dirt path between South Mountain and Freestone Park.

You can stay on concrete -- the official path -- the next 11½ miles to Freestone Park. (For variety, I sometimes rode the gravel canal road, or even broken blacktop pavement.) The official path changes canal sides several times.

The "canal" changes to muddy ditch east of Alma School Rd. I assume it runs underground (?), like an Arizona river, as it re-emerges just west of the canal paralleling Lindsay Rd.

All the major roads have a bike crossing signal. (There are no tunnels, and the only bridges are over I-10 and Loop 101.) The minor roads, just a hashed crosswalk.

The trail passes numerous small parks but only larger Carriage Lane Park and McQueen Park have restrooms. Several of the parks -- serving as 🌧 runoff sumps -- were underwater. McQueen Park had a nice duck pond.

Maybe my favorite part of the day was zipping down the Maricopa Trail railroad overpass. My kart racing days paid off: At the bottom, I took the quick left-right at speed, without crashing.

The next half mile skirts the north edge of downtown Gilbert. I enjoyed the smell of frying grease and dodging tourists on “electronic bikes”. 👋

The Maricopa Trail continues north along the west side of the Consolidated Canal East Branch, to an unprotected crossing. Instead, I used the signalled Lindsay Rd. crossing to access Freestone Park, where my supportive wife / shuttle driver was waiting for me with her haul of tasty Asian goodies from Lee Lee Supermarket in Chandler.

I’ve now completed 154.43 miles of the Maricopa Trail.

Took advantage of this cloudy day and nice breeze to do this shadeless hike. Since my partner had not been up to the Pass Mountain summit before I offered suggestions before hand , ie. gloves, helmet, rope, pads, long sleeves , of course as usual it goes unheeded :? Not sure if it was not desiring any extra adventure and or having little confidence in my navigation skills but Linda wisely downloaded a route. Afterwards to boost my feelings of accomplishment there was a comment about how a certain 10 yo : rambo : could have easily done this hike .Surprised at how few others were out today, even made Wind Cave Trail enjoyable as doubt we even came across a dozen others on it. We skipped the cave , there were a couple of ladies already there, hate to admit but the blue paint marks made a nice route to the summit on the south end which we had to ourselves, not even a bee joined us. Now heading back north wrestled with a Palo Verde tree along the short section to reach the rock formations you need to traverse in order to reach the rest of ridge line hiking route. Once on it was easy to stay on route here though a few side trails tempt one to go to the left to overlook the cliffs, vegetation was minimal.Approached the path to the summit side trail better than before by going up higher than I was usually going along here. At the summit pulled the top off the ammo can and found the hinge was broken on it , signed in, took a minute to get the top lined up and back on , no time to read the log as I could tell foot tapping intensity was increasing. The next high point along the way has a couple of cairns and a fire ring with a large rock collection, I’m suspecting some cult holds meetings here seemed even a bit weirder because we could hear the wind howling but only felt calm, saw an unusual white Boulder focal point from here another opinion suggested it was a rock covered in bird poop, :o so we decided on a snack break here. Finishing off the ridge line by scooting down the “cliffs” then hitting the dreaded scree slopes. We both managed to reach the Pass Mountain loop trail Maricopa trail junction without incident. Did spot one gnome but no wildlife. About a quarter mile from the trailhead we encountered our first hikers seen since leaving Wind Cave Trail, also for perhaps the first time no bikes today. Thanks Linda for the company and for performing the chollalectomy!

Taking a few days off this week so decided to do two hikes today! Parked near the exercise equipment Ramada by the Merkle Trail, cool and breezy had a quick warmup by taking the Vista Trail and then over to the Wind Cave trailhead. Not too busy yet about average for a weekday but much busier with a full lot on my second pass, kept a steady pace all the way to the cave . There was about a dozen older kids and a couple of adults in the now noisy cave so I didn’t enter so no break here. Having the idea I was heading over to Lone Peak later decided not to head up to the south summit. Passed by a friendly young lady running :o up the trail and back down while I was descending. After the Merkle Trail had a snack break back at my vehicle and then headed back to the Wind Cave trailhead. Took Pass Mountain loop trail to the junction with Maricopa Trail. Starting down that I was passed by the only biker I saw today. Once I spied the route to go up Lone Peak I made a diagonal over to it vegetation was not that bad, helped by using some of the ATV tracks. Once heading up passed two young girls headed down having stopped to take pictures at the shade tree with the semicircle of rocks arranged for sitting. Once at the summit took a prolonged break ,even laid down on the bench. There was a young lady sitting off on her own enjoying the views , I guess she decided I didn’t look too scary and she came over to the summit area. Saw no one else until all the way back on pass mountain loop trail. Fortunately mostly downhill from here so was able to finish up quickly . What a nice day to be outside to enjoy the beautiful desert despite minimal wildflowers. Again only a few paltry poppies and lupine not photo worthy on these trails that are usually teeming with them, hope 2022 is better.

Well, I wasn't sure if I'd get to walk today. Woke up to rain, but said "let's go!" anyway. I'd planned on more city walking than hiking, an easier day. I got to Pima Canyon at 6:45am. Still dark, rainy, and breezy, so I sat in the car hoping for a break. It finally broke at 7:45 and I took advantage. From Pima Canyon I went east along Guadalupe Rd., straight through Guadalupe. Past Kyrene Rd. to the Western Canal, where I turned south along Ken McDonald golf course. Followed the canal to Rural Rd., 4 miles from Pima Canyon. A good place to turn around just in case the weather took a turn for the worse.

There's some interesting murals along Guadalupe Rd. Otherwise not much exciting. I did come home with some booty...found a Titleist ProV1X along the edge of Ken McDonald. Always keeping an eye open for lost balls. :-) Not sure that @LosDosSloFolks would be interested in a ProV1.

Went back to where I left off last week on the Western Canal on East Valley Segment of the Maricopa Trail. Started at the parking lot for the Ken McDonald public golf course in Tempe and walked back to the spot where I turned around last Friday from McQueen Park. Then I hiked the MT all the way into South Mountain Park to Pima TH and back out. On my way back, I hiked up the Western Canal a mile and a half to add some mileage.

the path along the Western Canal is pretty wide for the most part. right next to the golf course are protective fencing and netting I assume to keep golf balls from hitting people. the MT only follows the canal to Guadalupe Road, and then heads west on Guadalupe to South Mt. It actually follows the south side of the road, but the first marker you see from the canal is on the north side of the road. Later on there is a dirt path instead of a sidewalk on the south side of the road. The need to mark this section better. Crossing I-10 you need to cross to the north side, and that's pretty apparent since there's only a sidewalk on the north side (and a marker). One section crossing the road after I-10 is a little treacherous because there is no designated trail, so you have to walk the street next to some high shrubs going around a blind curve.

North of Guadalupe Road, I found it better to hike on the west side of the northbound Western Canal because there was much less traffic there. Getting quite a bit of the MT done now. I might be delving into some of the other urban canal trails later on.

Picked up where I left off 2 weeks earlier on the Western Canal by McQueen Park. The MT official is on the south side of the canal until it reaches Alma School, then it switches over to the north side. I missed it on the way out, but got it on the way back. I walked both sides of the canal depending on how much traffic was on either side. Views aren't a whole lot with the power lines overhead. There are much wider setbacks along this canal for most of this area, whether it be residential, infrastructure, commercial, or parks. Some areas are easier to walk on depending on how big the gravel is. Saw some more urban wildlife. Finished by 10:30am.

Picked up where I left off, more or less from the day before. Started out at Harmony Park in Mesa, then hiked northbound to where I left the trail the day before, and headed back south. At the junction where the trail spurs off to Santan Regional Park, I headed west along the Western Canal to McQueen Park, then headed back.

The views along this area were nicer than the day before. The Western Canal is nicer, other than the powerlines overhead. There were a lot more parks, farms, and open areas, rather than just houses on either side. The trail goes right through the northern end of downtown Gilbert. It was interesting walking up to road crossings where I had been before and seeing everything from a different approach angle.

Neely Ranch Riparian Preserve was interesting. Lots of solar panels there. Signs next to the cyclone fence indicated that reclaimed water was being applied. That makes sense since a wastewater treatment plant is directly across the canal to the north.

Saw more people along the canals later into the morning, but no crowded conditions to speak of. Harmony Park had a lot of people when I got back, but I was able to keep distance from everyone.

Went back to the Maricopa Trail and did another section of that close to my house. Seems like the best option these days to see the least number of people out and to have plenty of space when you do see anyone. Got an early 6:30am start and headed south this time from where we started on Sunday. Walking south from this spot is walking through the economic strata of where people live. The big money homes are farthest north (with the views of the valley and Four Peaks), and then the decent houses, then to the apartment complexes and trailer parks, then back to nicer, more manicured neighborhoods. This section for the most part is looking into backyards with occasional distant views of some mountains.

I got about a half mile from Harmony Park, near Val Vista and Southern, when I decided to take a detour directly back to my house rather than hike all way back up the canal to my car. Saved a little time and extra walking. Done by 10:30am and got over 12 miles in. Making due with the current circumstances, nice to get a workout done rather early in the day. It's fun to see the routes connect together on my computer as I get more of the Maricopa Trail done.
