The night before my actual planned hike, my planned area had rain. No big deal except for the dirt roads I would have to use. I had no recent info on those dirt road's conditions, so I put the hike on hold for awhile, and went to Adero TH in Fountain Hills to get some hike time in.

I hiked the Ridgeline Trail, the Lower Ridgeline Trail and parts of a few more.
Temps were cool and the wind was gusting most of the time.

The trails from Adero TH are excellent trails, and there's a nice mix of trail connections to give a hiker many choices.

Second hike of the day. I was very lucky to grab the last parking spot. The trail itself is pretty nice. Single track with an equal mixture of dirt and embedded rocks. The elevation change is never extreme, though there were a few more ups and downs than anticipated. It was refreshing to have clear signage for the trails after my first hike at Hawes. Surprised at the number of potential loops options (there are three) on this narrow ridge. The Ridgeline Trail has its own self-contained loop around a hill at the midway point. On the way out, I took the south side of the hill and on the way back I hit the north side. The trail itself was very well designed. Very engaging. Distant views were sweet, but you are looking down at homes on both sides of the ridge.

Great weather! 11 hikers. No wildlife.

New trails have been built in the Fountain Hills Preserve, the North Leg Trail and the Lower Ridgeline Trail. The North Leg Trail connects from the Promenade Trail and heads east about 0.8 miles for an out and back. 200-300' of elevation is lost as you head down a ridge. The Lower Ridgeline connects to the Ridgeline Trail and does a similar thing heading down a ridge, but it then heads back up to the Ridgeline Trail to make a loop.

I got an earlier than usual start, just after 5:30am in an attempt to beat the heat a little. It was 95 when I left my house in Mesa and pretty humid. When I got out of the car at the Adero Trailhead, it was noticeable cooler being 1000' higher and some light breezes and shade.

The shade last in spots heading down and back along the North Leg Trail, but by the time I got to the Ridgeline, it was all sun. The heat was kicking pretty good when I was done, but there were still breezes that made a huge difference to cool me off. Took the Lower Ridgeline Trail to the overlook there and then took the shorter leg back up to the Ridgeline and went out to the end of that trail and headed back. Ended up with 8 miles for the day, and quite a lot more AEG than I had expected.

Saw 4 deer, 2 doe and 2 bucks in felt, along the Ridgeline Trail. They started to run and I thought they would be over the hill before I had a change to get some pics, but I think the heat had an effect on them once they started to run. They did eventually head over the hill, but much slower than you normally see deer go.

Passed 2 other hikers coming the other way, and saw 2 more from a distance walking along the level Promenade Trail as I hiked the ups and downs of the Ridgeline.

I've never been hiking from Adero Canyon before. There's a slew of geocaches on the trails here, so that was my motivation to get out here today.

First I took the Overlook trail to the Ridgeline trail and followed it to the end. On the way back, I took the newish Lower Ridgeline trail. I didn't see it in the list of nearby trails, so wasn't able to link it. There's an overlook on the Lower Ridgeline trail and near it, I went around a bend and there was a lady madly pulling up her pants as she was peeing right in the middle of the trail. You'd think she'd at least get a few feet off the trail first.

When I finished that, I started up the Promenade trail a short distance before turning onto the Western Loop / Andrews-Kinsey trails. I followed the AK to where it enters the Scottsdale Sonoran Preserve (the last geocache that way), then headed back to the Western Loop and followed it up and over the hill. That's a fairly steep climb. The descent down to the Promenade trail sucked. That is some bad trail design/build. The switchbacks are very sharp, and the runs are maybe 10 yards or less. It's worse than heading down the 99 switchbacks on Mt Whitney to Whitney Portal.

Mapped out an adventure which went above and beyond what the avg. hiker would set out for. The person I went with wants to hike Flat iron. I loved the views from the previous outing.

So we scrambled up 136th st., around others for 2/3rd of a mile on Sunrise, then took Andrew Kinsley into Fountain Hills. Next, we reached Adero Canyon TH and from there Overlook to the end of Ridgeline. 7 miles each way with a lil bit of everything.

Note: route looks slightly odd and the stats aren't exact cuz battery died toward end of outing.

Denny was looking for a 4-5mile hike, so I through this one together for him.

It was in the low 30's when we started around 8:45. Throw in a 30 mpg wind and it was a tad chilly.

We started from the Adero Canyon TH going north. 5 new trails for me today, one that was 15' long and included a bench. I'll let Denny do the writeup on that one.

Promenade :next: Sonoran :next: Lower Sonoran :next: Lookout Trail :next: Ridgeline Trail

The Sonoran :next: Lower Sonoran Trail was better than expected. It roller coasters 4.2 miles with 1000' of AEG. The trail is in excellent shape and there was someone out working on it.

The OaB on the Ridgeline via the Overlook is 4.3 miles and 950' of AEG if you include the Lookout. This was my favorite of the day. There are no bikes allowed on the one because they deem it difficult.
I'd do this one again.

The wind did not stop blowing all day. If you were on the western side of the ridges the wind was blocked.

Good hiking with the turtle again. I'm glad he got in his 4-5 miler.

Always good to get a hike in with The Eagle ! Some new trails for me. Promenade is part of an old dirt road you take to get to the Sonoran trails. The Sonoran trails are pretty smooth and the grades are great! We did those trails first. Bruce did an extra little lookout on the Sonoran. The Overlook and Ridgeline were next. These were a little more rocky but still nice trails with more nice grades on the ups and downs. Bruce did another lookout as I was out of gas. I should have have communicated better. When I caught up I thought he was gone back to car and he came down and thought I was behind him. He backtracked a half mile or so looking for me then finished his hike. 🤦‍♂️ Eagle claws are sharp and fast!! I said I was sorry! Good hike , temps, and company! Thanks Bruce. Like HAZ, you rock!!

At 4:45 AM, I drove out for a hike, 'only' 73 miles away. The last many driving miles were on a very bad dirt road, that eventually became non-drivable.
So, I turned around, and drove back to civilization.

I'll have to wait until that road is re-graded before I try that hike again.

Since I was in my hiking costume, I decided to go local, and hike from Adero Trailhead, in Fountain Hills.
I did the Ridgeline hike, just to get a bit of exercise.

I needed to stretch out my midwest legs and determine if I knew how to follow a trail & how not to get lost bushwhacking.

I used Adero Canyon TH to access many Fountain Hills trails, and also did a bit of off-trail maneuvering between trails.

I passed my "hike check-ride" and cleared myself to wander around the Arizona country side in the hopes of locating things.
Wish me luck. - :)

Day 3 of 2021, hike #3 of 2021! We read about this in the newspaper, so had to check it out. It's a good hike, albeit a bit crowded, and the fact that you're surrounded by the town of Fountain Hills (definitely not in the bondocks!) during the whole hike. The 360 degree views at the end are nice, you can see from South Mountain to Mount Ord and beyond.

The Ridgeline Trail has been done for over a month now, but just a few weeks ago Eagle Ridge Drive was finally paved and opened. I decided to wait a few weeks for the traffic to die down. Hikers were walking through the construction zone during the week to get to that trailhead, so I figured there would be high demand once it opened. Official hours are sunrise to sunset, similar to Scottsdale. However, since SRP hasn't yet energized anything there, it's basically 24 hour access for now. I got there about 6:30am to a pitch black trailhead, and still one more car there before I was.

I headed out to the Ridgeline Trail and back to the trailhead. The further you get out on the Ridgeline, the more you can see of Adero Canyon below, as well as the newly expanded ADERO resort (formerly Copperwynd). It was interesting to get a birds eye few of the streets and infrastructure that I normally work with and know what I was looking at. On the way back along the Ridgeline, a group of trail volunteers were doing maintenance on the trail, maybe trying to work a bit more on it. It's still a little rocky in places compared to the other trails in this area. I talked to the one guy and he said they will be building another new trail soon on a ridge to the east called the Lower Ridgeline Trail. Another reason to come back one day.

After getting to the trailhead, I headed out on the Promenade, Sonoran, and Lower Sonoran Trails, doing a lasso loop. Nothing of any great interest seen other than an empty raptor nest in a saguaro. Looks like it's a little more cloudy to the north, looked kind of chilly. The weather was cool all morning with light breezes. Nice to be in the middle of the cooler weather to hike near home.

Had to work in the morning and just wanted to do a quick solo exercise hike nearby in the afternoon. I had heard the Adero Canyon TH had re-opened and figured it could be a good choice to avoid crowds. I started on Promenade trail then looped the upper and lower Sonoran trails. I find it highly amusing that they rate these as difficult on their signage because they are easy, moderate at most. There are rolling hills and a couple of rocky sections but it’s nowhere near difficult. Anyway, I got a decent workout and some fresh air without too many people and didn’t have to drive very far. I’ll take it. There are options to do shorter or longer versions of this hike so it’s good for any skill level. They have paved the road to the TH and it has bathrooms. Sadly, every day can’t be an adventure!

This was a new hike for me and not described on HikeAZ so I thought I'd do it and post it. Fountain Hills is all the way across the valley from my home so I don't usually hike there. I saw a post on the Arizona Hiking facebook group on this hike so I decided to give it a try. It was worth the trip in my opinion. Some elevation gain, some views, a new area to explore. Great!!! Eagle Ridge Drive was open; past construction has been completed. Quite a few cars in the parking lot as there are a number of other trails accessed by this trailhead that are popular.
