Somewhat of a rerun of our hike just over a month ago, the main changes being:

1. A co-worker of Tracey's tagged along for a new experience with a couple of baby boomers.
(Rachel was less than half Tracey's age and a few years older than 1/3 my age)

2. We took the high road (old FR 6304) on the way out so as to take our lunch break by the huge boulder in the center of the canyon on the return trip.
* Although (like last trip) we did go East on the long-closed FR 9386T from junction with FR 6304, we only went far enough to where we saw all the elk climbing the slope to the North, which is where we climbed this trip. Why would we do that, you ask?

3. Well, in preparing this trip with hopes of finding something new and different to check out, using Route Editor I found there was a water tank up there, which may have been why the elk went that way?

4. What did we find? The water tank at the West end of the old FR 6306... ok, so at the moment it was a dry tank.

5. Since the slope back down to FR 6304 was steep with plenty of thorny vegetation, we wandered off-trail from the tank more-or-less in the direction of where we would cross FR 616. In actuality, we wandered some distance NE to avoid a few deep drainages on the way to FR 616.
(After all, I didn't scare Rachel off with intensive off-trail stuff so soon.)

6. The slope down to FR 616 was steep but thankfully the elk deemed it worthy of providing a route with switch-backs so the likelihood of a tumble on the descent was negligible.

From that point on, we followed the same route to Pivot Rock and Pivot Rock Spring as we did a month ago. Shortly before reaching the spring we met three elderly (older than me?) gentlemen, who had just visited the spring. The three, who mentioned they were surprised by the encounter, after asking where we were from, said they were from Tempe, Ahwatukee and Scottsdale.

Back to changes:
7. Rather than continuing past and above the spring and following FR 616 back to the canyon as we did last month, we retraced our steps back past Pivot Rock and returned to FR 616 along the canyon floor.

8. We took Rachel through the tunnel under FR 616... only after we assured her there were no bees.

9. We stayed along the canyon floor until reaching the massive boulder with trees growing out of it at 34.47777 -111.405520, where we stopped for our lunch. During our break we heard what sounded like a small frog croaking, seemingly within feet of us, but being unable to locate it before finishing our break we figured oh, well and continued on.

The rest of the hike back to the trailhead adjacent to the black mountain, while completely uneventful, wasn't boring in the least.
Overall it was a very enjoyable hike, with pleasing 68-80° temps.

We chose this one as a relatively easy introduction to hiking on the Rim for a co-worker of Tracey's, but due to a family emergency (for a cat, no less) we would be doing this one by ourselves. While we could have skipped it or done a different hike, since it had been two years since we'd last been there we saw no reason to change it.

Two hours to-the-minute from leaving home we were on the trail, starting from Forest Road 149, just off Milepost 200 on AZ 87... across the lot from the ADOT black mountain of asphalt.
Initially the temperature was in the low 70's but by time we reached Wildcat Spring it had dropped to 64°.

After crossing Forest Road 616 (we did not pass through the tunnel in either direction this trip) we noticed a change since last year, which was the addition of a two-rail fence of round logs to prevent ATV traffic from driving along the canyon bottoms. While there was no evidence of traffic South of FR 616, there was at least one set of tracks which had bypassed the fence. As usual, there are ALWAYS those who simply cannot be satisfied leaving areas un-traveled.

An hour in, as we made the turn East into the side canyon toward Pivot Rock the temps hit mid-70's, still just right. We took a few obligatory photos at Pivot Rock but only one at Pivot Spring, which was but a trickle out of the pipe. Leaving the spring we headed up to reconnect with Forest Road 616 for the roughly 1-mile road-walk back to where the tunnel runs under FR 616.

Heading South from there instead of returning along the canyon bottom we took the high road, following the long-closed FR 6304 until the junction with the also long-closed FR 9386T, where we decided to take a side trip to see how far it was still easy to follow, but more importantly, seeking a nice shaded set of rocks for our snack break.

Barely an eighth-mile in I noticed movement ahead, and moments later we scared up a number of elk, the closest being a mother & calf and a bit farther was a group of 5-6, at least one being another mother & calf. Unfortunately, although I had turned on my camera when I first noted movement I must have inadvertently turned it back off so pushing the button to take the photo did nothing, except raise my ire at the shot I missed... which was a perfect portrait of a mother and calf side-by-side in the only spot of direct sunlight. Oh well, it will just have to be a snapshot-in-my-mind.

Shortly after the elk encounter we would find ourselves among a large group of butterflies feasting on 'Bee Balm' flowers. Although no flat rocks were available to sit while taking our break, we'd make do with whatever was there to enjoy the flight of butterflies. What a peaceful picnic we had.

Right about the time the forecast said possible showers after 11 am, sure enough, looking up we saw large white clouds beginning to form... not that we actually expected any rain, we figured it was time to head back. Plus, with the sun which had been out in force before the clouds, the temperature had ramped up into the mid-80's so it was feeling warm.

The rest of the return trip was uneventful.

Attempting to determine the exact type of butterflies turned out to be a disaster. In many cases, Google Lens CAN be accurate, but in other cases it is simply garbage in = garbage out. In this case it came up with more than a half-dozen differently named butterflies, a few which were obviously incorrect, even one which was white.
So... just to warn you, I posted all the butterfly photos which weren't blurred, and whether I named them correctly or not, I simply don't care... if Lens uses them incorrectly, so be it.

Every once in a while it's good to go north and hike. The temperature was nice relative to the valley. Bruce is showing signs of memory loss. He didn't remember this many downed trees, he didn't remember the water being this high, he didn't remember this much vegetation or course Bruce may have a different take on it. I suppose it's possible the conditions were different last time. We must have stepped and climbed over 100 trees but whose was counting. Definitely bring a GPS track for Kinder/Horse and if you're looking for poison ivy you may be looking up at it so familiarize what the underside of the leaf looks like. On the positive side the views are great, no one got lost, SR 87 remained open all day and it was fun exchanging digs. The side trip to Pivot Rock/Spring was good. The temperature had risen by then but it was a short hike. The rock doesn't actually pivot so you may need some WD-40 to break it loose. It was nice to catch up with Linda and Bruce. For the record, I had nothing to do with the Wally fire.

Spent some time in the high country to take these two on trails they've not traveled on before. The drive down FR95 is easy and mainly smooth and drive-able by any vehicle. FR95T requires HC. If no HC,park out by FR95 and it'll add .6 mile each way.

Down the Kinder Crossing Trail is a bit steep in places, but mild compared to what was to come. The first crossing of the East Verde is not totally obvious and always seems to take a few tries to find it.

We hiked across the camping area and it took a few tries to find a dry way across the next section. This area, at the entrance of Yeager Canyon, is a special area. We were able to find a dry path across.

That was the end of the dry and brush free sections. The section between the west and the climb out on the East Kinder trail was a lot more overgrown than in past hikes. There used to be use trails along this section. Now, wet crossings, crawdads and brush were the norm.

We mostly stayed on the faint trail for the climb out on the East Kinder Trail, except where downed trees forced a slight detour. The two track walk to the Horse Crossing trail was a nice respite.

The east side of Horse Crossing is now a cluster. I did this trail 14 years ago with Deb. I wouldn't even think about it now with her. This may be my last time. Blackened fallen trees from the Tinder fire become annoying fast. As does the trail hiding vegetation. Although climbing over the trees did earn Linda a new nickname.

I couldn't even find this sign from 3 years ago. [ photo ] . (I couldn't find anything on this group, or this guy, that fit. I'd love to send them this photo.)

The section in the East Verde from the East Horse Crossing trail to the West section, was non-existent. There used to be a well defined path through here.

We walked through the camp of a couple of fly fishermen that was on the lower beginning of the West Horse Crossing Trail. The trail up, was easy to follow with minimal trees to hop over.

Once up top and on the two track, it was clear sailing back to the Ru.

We were lucky to have clouds for the majority of the hike. It kept the temps very nice.

On the way back to Pine we stopped at Pivot Rock, because Wally said in his best Boy Scout leaders voice "That thing's going down!".

Good hiking with these two again... including Tyrone.

We decided to tack on a small hike to Pivot Rock since Bruce said we were too full of energy. Easy hike, a tad warm at this point of the afternoon. Buggy.

Once past the rock, we headed over to the spring, where temps were notably cooler while we took a short break by the water.

Retraced our steps back out, passing a few other hikers. Quick drive back to Pine, where we visited with Deb fir a few minutes, and enjoyed a tasty dessert she had prepared for us. Nice to finally meet her! Easy drive back to the Valley, less traffic than I expected.

Kelly and Denny wanted to break away from the South Mountain Senior Circuit and Boyce Thompson to enjoy some high country trees, water, and cool temperatures. After much consternation, we settled on these two.

We had a glorious 56-degree start from the Clover Creek Canyon trailhead at 6:40 am. We ran into nobody the entire hike. We took it to the point where the trail peters out a bit over 2 miles downstream. Birds, chipmunks, and squirrels were enjoying the morning, as well as Denny and Kelly.

Next, it was off to Pivot Rock for the short hike to the rock and then the spring. We started at the lower FR616 trailhead. The Forest Service has done a lot of work here to keep wheeled vehicles out of the beginning of this trail. The trail is a bit tight in spots, especially the initial turn upstream. No poison ivy was seen, but we had a minor gnat problem. We stopped at the rock and then the spring to enjoy even cooler temps.

It was good to get out and catch up with Kelly and Denny.

Pivot Rock Canyon sounded like a good Memorial Day hike. I would be going north on 87 to the rim while everyone else would be heading south and back to Phoenix. My assumption proved correct.

Pivot Rock Canyon is accessible via either FR-616 or FR-142. I chose the 616 access point. This was due to less time spent on dirt roads to get to the canyon. I like hikes with a reward at the end. However, by doing this via 616 the reward comes at you right away in the form of a cool spring head.

In what is apparent headwaters of this canyon's namesake stream, cool air and water gushed from what I believe is a man-made cut in the rock. There is also a rusty old pipe, indicating this spring has in fact had some human manipulation.

The trail was mostly easy to follow, although I don't believe this is an official, maintained trail. There were no signs or even cairns; it just follows the creek. The next reward came into view. It was a balanced rock formation that likely served as the namesake for this canyon. Eventually the trail joins an old ATV road and then it becomes easier to follow.

The creek was flowing nicely today. Not too strong so as to make crossing difficult, but not dry either. Further up the canyon the creek waters did disappear underground and then the rocky creek bed was dry. The water would eventually re-appear at a later point further up-canyon.

The area is surrounded by beautiful ponderosa pines and narrow, grassy meadows. There were plants bearing three leaves. These had stalks of beautiful yellow flowers. I'm not certain they were poison ivy, but I carefully sidestepped them rather than risk finding out the hard way.

There was one final reward near the end. The ruins of an old cabin came into view. It reminded me of Cabin Loop on another part of the rim.

I intended my return to be via the way I came. As the ATV road ended and footpath began again, I lost the trail. I ended up in a treacherous area searching for the trail. I thought I found it only to look up and see a pile of paper towels. I knew right away. And then the smell hit me. I had stepped in human feces. Some people are so disgusting. And I wasn't on the correct trail.

I eventually got back on the correct path. And naturally, I followed what appeared to be a good path. It was obvious this was an ATV trail. I hadn't come in this way. Aggravated, I studied my GPS and realized I had gone up a side canyon tributary. I opted to keep following the ATV road knowing it would eventually intersect 616, which it did. The Forest Service is in the process of building fences and trying to keep people off these decommissioned ATV roads. In fact, the roads themselves no longer exist on most maps, nor are they numbered. A sign warned of a $5K fine for motorized use. Based on the fresh tire tracks, this is going unheeded.

My return to the trailhead was nearly a mile along hot, exposed FR-616. I missed getting to see the spring head again, so I guess getting my reward at the beginning was a good thing.

Misread the last part of the directions. Used app to find starting point. Started hike at noon. Did my homework for this one. Yet still had RF issues.

Was sailing through for awhile. Yet didn't see cabin. Only saw remnants of a frame. Majority of way through, began struggling to stay on trail. Surprised to see 1 other hiker out there.

Ended up following road. Finally located spring. Beautiful spot. Chilled there for awhile. Then took jeep road back. Finishing a lil before dark. Might return another time.

I had Deb's car today, so my ability to reach TH's was limited. On the way to where I started on FR6305, a mama bear and 2 cubs darted across SR87, 50 feet in front of me.

This hike was primarily on a combination of FRs and decommissioned FRs, with a sprinkling of off-trail sections. The plan was to reach West Clear Creek and explore potential drop-in points for the future.

Since my last visit to the Pivot Rock area, a controlled burn had been conducted. It should look much improved by next year. After a short excursion in Hicks and Duncan Canyon, I scrambled up to FR142F. From there, it was a 3.5-mile road walk to reach WCC. I descended about 50 feet on a use trail to enjoy some scenic views into WCC. Based on the well-used game trail, this MAY be a possible drop-in point. I followed the remaining road down, then back up the side canyon to its end and headed north-ish to check the views from the next ridge line. However, this one was not as impressive.

Now, onto the return trip. I explored the arm of Pivot Rock Canyon that leads past Huffer Springs (I wonder how it got that name). There's some easily bypassed deadfall, but there's a nice use trail all the way to the running springs.

The fauna for the day included a Mama Bear and 2 cubs on the drive in, two turkeys in Pivot Rock Canyon, and a coyote.

During the hike, I encountered 1 jeep and 2 ORVs traveling on decommissioned FRs, as well as 2 motorcycles on a non-motorized trail blazing past a warning sign for a $5000 fine. Get off my lawn!

Overall, it was a pleasant and easy stroll with great weather.

We hit up this short one on the way back from Blue Ridge.

This was slightly tougher than previous hikes here because of the higher water in the creek and winter downfall. I'd planned on taking my guests inside to check out the cave, but with the higher water flow, we decided against it.

If you seek an easy to moderate 3-hour cool morning summer hike with lots of shade and an abundance of green, this is the ticket.

We encountered three small groups, one large group, and an individual biker several times. All were friendly and seemed relaxed and happy to be out wandering aimlessly.

Denny cried about the ridiculously short hike but we reassured him not every damn hike has to be sunrise to sunset.

Ferns and green galore!

We were able to get the stooges together for a short one in the high country.

Easy access TH, easy grades, green, green, green.

Good catching up with the boys. It was nice to take a break at the mouth of the cave for Pivot Rock Spring. The breeze coming out of it were 20 degrees cooler.

Joe and I went up to Bruce’s neck of the woods for a nice stroll through some greenery!
Bruce picked a nice one. It seemed like 3/4 shade, a little spring/cave with lots of cool air, and an interesting rock formation or two. Very enjoyable!
Always nice to get a hike in with these two!!
Like HAZ, they rock!!

Got a small group of fun girls together for a day hike up north! We wanted a decent amount of mileage, but nothing too crazy so I picked pivot rock canyon. I’m the only one who had been before so I did the route planning. Last summer @chumley took us on some psycho bushwhacking shenanigans so my route definitely avoided that part of the hike. I prefer to not scare away people who have never hiked with me before; at least not on the first trip! : wink :

We started from the official trailhead and headed directly to the spring. With all the rain we’ve been getting, I was actually quite surprised there wasn’t more flow; it was a bit more than trickle but definitely less than last year. Given less water flow, we were able to head deeper into the cave this time. Some of us went all the way to the back and around the corner and it was super interesting. I saw a cluster of bats on the ceiling but they didn’t move & we gave them their space. After we had our fill in there, we took a quick group shot them continued on.

Next up we arrived at pivot rock, which the girls really liked! Last year someone in our group found an ammo box and I recalled signing it. We searched hard and could NOT find it! Erica is actually a rock climber so she even got up to the top and it wasn’t there either. I’m super curious if it was removed or just really well hidden! :?

We continued on towards Tom’s canyon area and checked out the old cabin. Soon we encountered a lost dog and based on the collar buzzing, we knew the owner was nearby. Daniela & I continued on to the cabin to get Roshi away from the other dog while the other girls tried to calm down the dog and call for the owner. Soon we saw a man on horseback looking for his dog; we pointed him in the right direction and all ended well. With the group back together, we took a nice lunch break at the cabin before heading back to the trailhead.

The climb out was a tad tiring and we got a bit off track, but we figured it out and all made it back in one piece before the rain started. It was a really fun hike with a great group of gals and we had the whole place to ourselves with the exception of the one man on horseback. Gotta love that for a Saturday!

Erica, Daniela & I camped nearby to keep enjoying the beautiful temps a bit longer. All around great girls day up north!

Joe asked for credit, if I did this hike.

I drew this one up, taking advantage of known routes and with interest of checking out some new areas.

39 degrees to start, up Pine Canyon #26 and the Switchbacks to warm up. Up top it got cooler and the wind was whipping. I combined some grown over FR's, side canyons and the General Crook Trail to make my way past Baker Lake. A bit more off trail and then hopped over SR87 to check out the lightly flowing Huffer Spring.

I continued north toward Pivot Rock following old FR's when I could. I kicked up of 20+ elk at one point, including at least 2 bulls, and watched them noisily gain the next ridge line.

At Pivot Rock Spring, I took a break for lunch.

The hike back was either on existing trails or short off trail jaunts.

Good times, great weather (albeit windy), with few people seen all day

OK Joe, here is your credit.
Use it at the store of your choice

Everybody seems to like this Hike, so it was time to see what it was all about. I inadvertently did part of this Hike a few years ago, just exploring the Creek in both directions from 142, but back then I didn't know about this particular Hike. I made it as far as the Cabin last time. Big difference between then and now. Back in May 2017 the water was running from the road almost all the way to the Cabin. Not this time. It was dry until the last 1/2 mile or so before the Spring. I was hoping that wouldn't be the case and it nixed my plans to go downstream as well, after I got back from the Spring.

I arrived fairly early and it was apparent that the area had gotten some rain in the last 12 hours. There were still some cloudiness present, but it was clearing up. I headed out and within the first 1/4 mile, I ran into a rafter of turkeys, so although I didn't get any great photos, it was a nice start. Birds were few and far between after that until water started to appear in the creek. The Forest was very quiet. It was nice, albeit rather muggy to start off with. I didn't see another soul until just before Pivot Rock. A father and son combo had parked up above and I met them travelling down canyon. They had never been there, so were new to the area too.

Found Pivot Rock, signed the Register and continued on for the spring. I arrived at the Spring and took a nice break and had an early lunch. The Spring is pretty cool, in more ways than one. I think the temp dropped almost 20 degrees when you were close to that cave. And the birds were showing up as I sat there. I think they prefer to drink right from the source, rather than further down the creek. I ended up with 12 species for the day. Butterflies were also numerous even though there wasn't much for wildflowers on this hike.

Went back the way I came and timed it pretty well getting back to the truck. The sky was getting dark and thunder could be heard. I never did get rained on though, even in the truck. Since I didn't want to explore Tom's Creek the other way since it was dry, I decided to do a quick hike up to the Baker Butte Lookout. That didn't work out too well as there are No Entry signs now, due to some pandemic floating around. So I went down to Payson and dinked around the East Verde for a bit before getting some dinner and heading home. Another interesting Sunset on the way home. A Sunset through smoke amidst a burned desert.

It was a good day all in all and I'll be back to do Tom's Creek to Clover another day when things are flowing again. Nice to get out of the heat again for sure.

Not much going on for wildflowers on this Hike. Area seems too dry even though it looked to have just gotten some rain. Vegetation looks stressed until you get to the water.

Ben wanted to get in a trail run and visit the Spring/Cave for the first time.
I had not been in it in 5 years. The temperature difference in there is delightful.
We tried a different canyon coming back.
It made for an enjoyable short loop
