Had to get some chores done at home so I stayed local but did a little longer hike.

Started from the Ellsworth ATV TH north of Usery. Mostly shady up Alpe D'Huez until the top, then took the Goat Trail over to Sunset Ridge. The views up at the top here are really nice and underrated. You can see from Phoenix to Scottsdale, Red Mountain, Mazzie, Ord, 4Peaks and the Supes. A winter hike after a rainy day gives some great views of snow capped mountains to the north.

I hadn't done Sunset Ridge in a few years and I remembered the dicey sections. After last spring and summer of doing really steep hikes, this was a breeze this time. Because it's so steep and technical for the bikers, there's not much traffic on it.

After Sunset Ridge I took Twisted Sister over to Big Sister. Big Sister had the most traffic, all downhill speeders. I took High Horse over to the Stinger Loop and then made a wrong turn and headed west on another trail. I doubled back and got back on the Stinger Loop but took the Brush Lite Trail, which parallels the Stinger west loop and has been rerouted a bit, which I noticed only after I got home and downloaded the track on my computer.

took Scorpion Alley over to Scorpion, and then headed over to Maricopa Madness to complete the loop. These trails had much less traffic, but that may have been because it was later in the morning and getting warm.

Temperature was cool to start, and getting hot towards the end, but not that bad.

First hike of 2025. Our last hike was 8 weeks ago. We all agreed on no bushwacking, so this was a good choice. Did EJ Peak first, was smooth and pleasant, with good views of the Supersitions, Goldfields, Four Peaks, and Salt River. There were 3 people at the peak, saw no others. We descended back to the trailhead, crossed the street, and encountered at least 8 bikes on Lance's Trail in the first half mile. After we exited to Cactus Nectar trail, there were no bikes for the next 1.5 miles, and only 2 bikes total. The last quarter mile to the peak was steep with loose gravel, which slowed us down a bit. We went to the middle (main) peak, and enjoyed the beautiful views. Then we looped back on Alpe D'Huez trail, and encountered at least 10 more bikes along the way.

Beautiful day, perfect weather, great views, almost no other hikers, and about 15-20 bikes, with the constant gunfire providing our soundtrack. Gotta remain vigilant for bikes on Alpe D'Huez trail. The other parallel trails have far fewer bikes. All of the trails were exceptionally well maintained except for the last quarter mile to Usery Peak, where we all slipped a few times on the descent.

With my beloved Supes getting roasted by the Siphon Fire, I opted to head to the Hawes Trails and hike amongst the mountain bikers.

I wanted to go visit one of my favorite crested beauties and get in some elevation. I decided to hike over to the Red Mountain Rush trail and hike up to see it. TONS of mountain bikers. Most of them courteous, but a few seemed surprised to see me hiking up.

I made to the cactus and kept going up to the Sunset Ridge overlook and kept the loop going along the Goat Trail over to the High Ridge Trail. I contemplated hiking up to the Usery Peaks, but decided to just keep going on the loop. Once I got on the High Ridge Trail, I saw only 1 mountain biker and no other souls. It sounded like Machine Gun Day over at the Shootin’ Range, I was hoping nobody missed their targets and sent over over the mountain.

I like going down (but not up) the High Ridge Trail, it’s got nice views and is not busy at all. I made it down, crossed the wash and made my way over to Lance’s Trail to take me back to the parking area. Lots of bikes on this section.

I came across a small tortoise on Lance's Trail who seemed very stressed and scared. I took a few pictures and let him be. Probably a moody teenage mutant ninja tortoise.

I nice morning with some nice views. I hope there’s something left over in the western Supes once this fire gets contained.

I didn't actually make it all the way up to Peak 2972, just the peak north of it, which is a little lower. From the Ellsworth Road ATV TH, I took Lance/Alp d'Huez/Goat up to that peak, then headed down Iron Goat and Cactus Nectar. Once back at the TH, I did a quick climb up to EJ Peak and headed back down. Got done fairly quickly and got nearly 2100' AEG in for the morning.

Cool and breezy early on. It started to rain on my down Iron Goat and Cactus Nectar and stopped by the time I was back at the TH. The sun came out on the way up to EJ, then another storm started to roll in on my way down, which provided a lot of cloud cover that cooled it off again. Back at the TH, hail started to fall for about 5 minutes and then quit. Overall the weather was perfect. The mix of the sun and clouds gave some really nice and dramatic scenery all morning.

Nice 7 mile loop on the east side of the Hawes system. Lances, Jumping Jack, High Noon, up Red Mtn Rush, Goat, and back down Alpe d'Huez. That was a good cardio work out but my knees are showing their age. A few poppies on the ridgelines but nothing spectacular.

A spur of the moment decision to hit this one. I was slow at work and though “why not?”

I took my usual path up the sandy wash from Usery Pass Road to the Alp d’Huez Trail and then up the steep/sketchy “trail” to the saddle that starts off the High Ridge/A d’H junction.

The weather was perfect. I came across a few mountain bikers and a runner, but otherwise had the place to myself.

The clouds and sunset looked promising. I made it to the middle peak 2972 and then on to the rocky Peak 2959 before heading over to the northern most peak 2933.

Lots of scenery up on this one. Great views of the Goldfields, Four Peaks, Pass Mountain and the Mazatals looking east/north and amazing views of the western horizon.

The sunset was really beautiful. I stayed up until the colors faded. But, on the way down, it looked like there was a little afterglow going on. Oh well, it was an awesome way to end the day.

On the way down, I opted to skip the sandy wash and try out Lance’s Trail which takes you back to Usery Pass Road. I love the groomed trails in the Hawes system. Gotta dodge the occasional biker, but what a nice change from the rough and rocky Supes.

I am glad I decided to head out for this one. Nice exercise, fresh air, a chance to decompress/de-stress and a beautiful sunset for the cherry on top.

We decided to do a short night hike and figured this would be a good one since this trail system is extensively utilized by bikers. Arrived about 1:30am. Need to start paying particular attention to the trail now that it's warming up; don't want to step on any rattlesnakes! It seems it was cool enough that there were none out this early in the morning.

Hike was quite nice, got some nice views a and took a couple of pictures. Finished up at about 3:30am and got home in time to start the day!

Great hike thru some of the best views Hawes has to offer. Did Trans Goldfield with Roger, now Trans Hawes with Rick and the girls, couldn't keep up with the Girls. Met 4 horses on RM Rush... really surprised us.

My buddy Dan B was in town from Seattle and wanted to do a epic ride in the valley. Went out to Hawes to ride the new Big Sister and Red Mountain Rush trails. Parked near the start of Twisted Sister and made our way on the following trails: Twisted Sister, Big Sister, Wild Horse, Jumping Jacks, L'Alpe d'Huez, Goat, Red Mountain Rush, and Wild Horse back to the van. Crazy long climb up L'Alpe d'Huez and even crazier drop off the ridge down Red Mountain Rush.
