Played tourist in the Grand Canyon with the kiddos. Drove up the night before and camped in the Kaibab off of 180. Entered park on Friday and headed straight to Shoshone (which was not marked from 64), saw four or five other groups of hikers on the trail, none at the point itself. We ventured all the way out to the very tip of the point, though there was a lot of hand-holding and butt-sliding to keep my stress levels down... The 5yo was being especially defiant on this trip. After that shaded hike we also hit up Grandview and went down about a quarter mile on the trail, just so they could brag that they were 'in the canyon'. Too many people and too much exposure here to feel comfortable so we quickly headed out. Thought about continuing on to Hull Cabin next and instead opted for a scenic drive back to Phoenix through Sedona. The sheer amount of people out on Friday, both at the main attractions (GC village, SK trailhead) and along 89A, was v shocking, and I think we'll be sticking to more remote areas for the next flu few months.

Last hike of my Grand Canyon visit and.....WOW. The "trail" is nothing more than a dirt road, but the view at the end is FANTASTIC! Wife and I had the views to ourselves for about 10 minutes before We had to,share the grandeur. Talk about panoramic....this is as close to a 360 view you can get and still be on the rim. Tried to see the Tonto trail below, but couldn't make it out. :? We could see a trail on the north side...thinking Clear Creek? What a great way to see the Canyon off!

Sometimes I go to the Canyon in June to remind myself its still hot in the summer. It is indeed still hot if anyone is wondering. Carlos, myself and Pernell teamed up for this pretty cool summit off Shoshone Point.

We met at the Shoshone Point Trailhead at 4:30 a.m. and started at 4:45 a.m. The Shoshone Point descent was a real treat. I had been meaning to do this off trail descent since reading about Buchart´s account of it several years ago. It was well worth the wait. The smoke from the Magnum Fire made for a surreal descent. It was almost as if the sun´s rise was delayed.

I grabbed the lead for the first pitch, which is known for a bit of a spicy traverse that is protected by an old pin. I did not actually find the traverse overly tough though and found some finger size cam placements along the way after the pin to protect the traverse and guide the rope. Carlos took the easier climbing second pitch and we soloed the rest of the route, which might have amounted to some light class five in spots. The summit provided some excellent albeit eerie views. We replaced the old register with a new copper box, took an extended break and then headed for the rap stations.

It took us two raps to reach the base of the climb. We rapped an approximately 35 m upper portion of the climb and then eventually dropped nearly exactly where we started after another 20m rap.

The climb out was a bit of a slog at times, but scrambling the ridge livened us up some. The heat was a bit suffocating at times, but some nice breezes provide relief along the way.

Easy to find. Stopped off for an hour or so after arriving in the park. Enjoyable, few people, but not solitude. Word is out.

After talking to a bride (and groom) who had just married here, I learn the NPS charges $450 to have a wedding ceremony at Shoshone Point. Wow! It is the most expensive of the points, but most secluded. You can tell I am never married, as I realize that as I type that, $450 is probably pretty cheap for a wedding venue.

Caught a glimpse of the canyon Saturday evening but Sunday was nothing but snow, snow and more snow!

Will have to return one day to catch the canyon in stormy snow glory and fulfill the unique backpacking trip we originally had planned.

Four of us spent 3 days clearing several deadfall, encroachers and leaners along #36, refinishing 14 signs along #36 and refinishing 2 signs along #37. The signs were originally varnished so we sanded the signs smooth before applying a wood preservative.

The varnish on south facing signs was particularly blistered and ugly so the hope is that the wood preservative will fair better. Storms rolled in the first two days and gave the forest a nice soaking.

Took a quick trip on Tuesday afternoon out to Shoshone Point. On Wednesday on the way back home went up Red Butte but a third incoming storm persuaded me to turnaround a bit short of the summit.

Fun trip with a great group.

Took the sister and niece to the Grand Canyon. We did this view point to get the pups a little exercise and hit up a few of the other popular ones as well. We also did the junior ranger thing for the little one. I was probably good on another trip to the canyon this week, but it’s always nice to show the natural wonder to others and watch them marvel at its expanse and beauty. After the canyon, we headed for some desert camping in Sedona, which was a big hit too.

Surprisingly, the parking area was as full as I've ever seen it. Still, there were only two other small groups on the point when we got there. One guy was flying his drone around, taking family photos.

We had some out of town wedding guests that had never been to Arizona before and wanted to see the Grand Canyon before they went home. So took a day trip up to the GC and was able to knock this hike off of my wish list. What can I say, but WOW!

Traffic going into the park was bad, the parking lots overflowing with cars and a sea of humanity. But a simple 5 minute drive away from all of this was a tiny unmarked parking lot with only two other cars in the lot. Took us about 20 minutes to get to the rim and we were blown away. Very nice to have the canyon all to ourselves. Spent about 90 minutes exploring and simply taking it all in.

Took me 47 years to make my first trip to South rim of Grand Canyon Natl Park. The stories of big crowds of tourists has kept me away. It made sense that we would pass by the usual lookouts and drove to Shoshone Point. Walked in a mile and enjoyed the grand scenery that is GC. No annoying guard rails, and very few people in this area. We found our own litle point to walk out on, took in the views and then we were on our way up to Page.

This is my gym. I have to travel down a bumpy road to get there. There are no treadmillls, no machines, and no personal trainers. I walk..I run..I breathe the fresh air. I can go any time I want, as much as I want and there is no membership fee.

Finally.
First, I finally took a long helicopter tour over Grand canyon and it was absolutely amazing (although quite expensive).
Second, I finally got to Shoshone Point that'd been on my wish list for quite a while. Went almost all the way to 'shroom rock' but stopped several yards short because of icy trail being close to the edge. Great views.
After that headed to the Village and wandered around there, visited the historical exhibition on the lower level of Kolb Studio (earlier I had no idea that it was there) and then went to several points on Hermit Road. Watched sunset (pretty much masked by the clouds) from Mohave point.
