This was planned as a shuttle hike. I tried some options to get a ride up to the north end but none panned out. We dropped the Xterra off at Doll Baby and got into Wally's Bronco for the ride up. At that point he mentioned that he decided to just make his hike an out and back from out starting point, eliminating the need to drive back up to Pine. Wally isn't all that interested in either hiking all of the AZT or driving until after dark to pick up his car, so he saved the day and did us all a favor.

I was able to cajole Wally to take us not to the Pine TH, but down Hardscrabble Road, down FR1655 to the powerline, which was where we stopped. It was only .6 miles to the hike we had done in 2010 that led to the AZT, and only 1.4 miles to the AZT.

We backtracked on the new singletrack reroute of the AZT to where it turns to a road and then turned around and headed south. Wally turned around at the 6 mile mark and headed back to his car. Brian and I kept soutbound to Doll Baby where we left the Xterra.

Most of this was downhill with a very gradual grade, with a few exceptions of a climb after crossing a wash and a few steep descents. The worst descent was a little before the river crossing, which was steep and also very loose. We were able to cross the river without getting our feet wet with the low flow. We saw 2 NB hikers, one of which told us the river was up to his knees. There was a spot where that would be the case, but just downstream was a low flow and dry area.

We took the shortcut back to Doll Baby, which had the steep singletrack, but more climbing once we were on the road.

The weather was perfect except for the bad visibility with the haze from the winds, which seemed to be the case all the way down to Phoenix. Very windy and a little cool to start, but it warmed up once the sun hit, but never really got hot.

This is definitely the rockiest section of the AZT I've done so far. Most of the rocks are half buried so it's not like much can be done in the way of maintenance to make it better. It wasn't too bad, especially since we did this downhill, but it does add the element of challenge a little.

Saw nearly 50 elk on the ride in up to the powerline, but none after that.

Had planned on hiking AZT 25 with Chris & Brian but decided on the drive up just providing the shuttle and getting a good hike in would be better. I have a plan to hike up to Whiterock Mesa with a side trip to Polles Mesa some day so I may be back with some exploring to boot.
We made good time up to Payson and shuttled up to Pine. FR 1655 off Hardscrabble Road is on my onX Offroad App and rated for 4x4, SxS & ATV. We drove in to the power line where FR 1654 begins at 1.3 miles.
Chris had the route down the powerline and over to the AZT. The road was rocky but the trail is good. I found a Happy Birthday mylar balloon along the way and stopped at a fence about 6 miles in.
I turned back at the fence and some clouds moved in and the breeze picked up making fun of my thoughts it could be a warm hike. I kicked up a jack rabbit and moments later a raptor swooped down but came up empty. No Wild Kingdom scene for me.
I passed 2 quads on the drive out and hardscrabble road had several SUVs on it. Nice weekend trip.

Belated post. Another invite from Chris got me one stage closer to completing the Arizona Trail. Headed up to Payson with Chris and Wally to do a shuttle hike. Chris dropped his vehicle off at Doll Baby and then Wally did some serious off roading to get us as close to the AZ Trail as vehicular possible. (We were trying to save a few miles and start a little further south from the Pine TH). And as we were driving there Wally decided that he would do a simple in and out and not hike the whole section. Sad that he wasn’t there for the long haul, but this was a big deal in the sense that it saved at least an hour of drive time to an already long day.

We started from a powerline road around 7am. It took about 1.7 miles to reach the AZT. We did a little backtracking on the AZT so that Chris could connect to where he had left off on a previous hike and then we were southbound. The trail was easy to follow, but annoyingly rocky at the start. It wasn’t so much the loose rocks as the embedded rocks that caused you to keep an eye on the trail. Not that we were missing any great views. The landscape was dotted with junipers and pinions that blocked the views (and didn’t provide much shade). And when the views did open up all we had were hazy conditions which was caused by controlled burn in the area. Wally was feeling festive along the way. Halfway through the hike he came upon a semi inflated Happy Birthday balloon which he proceeded to tie around his backpack. However, breezy conditions made it a choking/tripping hazard as it kept wrapping around his neck and blocking his view. Wally went in just over 6 miles before turning around at a gabion gate.

Chris and I continued on, taking a break at the Saddle Ridge junction. This junction was surprisingly unsigned though you could see the split in the trail. (There was an AZT arrow pointing the direction, just no trail names). After that, the trail was incredibly flat, straight(ish) and (relatively) smooth for the next 5 miles. I’m sure there was some change in elevation, but it was very mild. There was a very steep descent to the Verde River. No fun going down and I’m sure twice as bad for those going up. Easy crossing of the Verde; able to rock hop across. There had been a couple of climbs along the way, none of them serious, until we left the AZT and hiked a use trail and road back to Doll Baby. No wildlife on the hike, but must have seen close to a 100 elk on the drive to the TH’s. They were everywhere! Encountered 2 solo hikers heading north around the Verde River, but otherwise had the mountains to,ourselves. Very nice hike. Great company. A big shout out to Chris and Wally for setting up a shuttle and making a potentially difficult section doable.

I was driving north and decided to stop off in Pine and do this hike, which was out-and-back from the Pine TH. I was hoping to see some fall foliage once I got on the Walnut Trail heading toward Hardscrabble Road. Unfortunately there was no color at all, as the maples were still green. I had intended to go all the way to Hardscrabble Road and turn around there, but I stopped and turned around about a mile short of the road since there was no colorful foliage.

Route Scout quit recording and flat lined 3 times, so it is not working too well on my phone right now. This likely made my recorded distance and elevation gain a bit short.

There was really not any fall color to see yet. Maples are still green so perhaps they will show some color in another week or so.

Kelly and John needed help with a shuttle for their backpacking trip on AZT #25. They started from the Doll Baby Trailhead on Friday, while I started from the Pine Trailhead on Saturday. It was a bit brisk, with ice in some of the drainages, but I took off my puffer and hat after a couple of hours.

There was still some color holding on around the Oak Spring area.

I finally ran into Kelly and John where the old AZT alignment meets the new one. After a snack break, we headed toward the Pine Trailhead. We checked out Oak Spring, where there was filterable water and some lingering maple color, before tackling the last big climb of the day.

Afterward, we had lunch at Kelly and John's favorite eatery, then drove back to retrieve John's vehicle at Doll Baby.

john and i decided on a one night backpack for this azt passage
we set out from doll baby trailhead around 0815 friday morning
temps were in the upper twenties, but it didn't feel that cold
took the road portion to jf ranch and waded across the east verde
filtered water at whiterock spring/tank
had to carry four liters for a few miles
rock creek canyon is about halfway, and we wanted to get beyond that point
found notes on a good campsite a couple miles further uphill on far out
14 mile first day, rolling into a very nice campsite
we set up camp, made dinner and enjoyed a small fire
long night this time of year, and it got down to 35 degrees or so
coffee and breakfast saturday morning before setting out around 0810
warmer today, very comfortable hiking temps
lighter packs after the dry camp with a shorter hike out
met bruce with six to go and the remaining miles went by quickly
lunch at thai station and bruce took us back to doll baby

big shout out to bruce for helping us with logistics
nice to get another passage done
saw some javelina along the way
saw six thru-hikers, three friday night and three saturday morning, all sobo
trail was mostly in good shape
it's very rocky in places and there was one section of catclaw
lots of juniper trees and some more open areas
one pocket of maples near oak spring
a finishing climb into pine trees at the end
fun to do this as a backpack - it's been awhile
good times

It has been too long since Kelly and I have knocked out an AZT segment. Decided to backpack this one starting from the Doll Baby trailhead. The connecter trail to get to the AZT is a bit under four miles.
We got going to frosty 26 degree temps. There is some aeg on the way and that got us warmed up. Soon after joining the AZT, we crossed the Verde river which was cold and clear.
Coming out of the river is a long uphill trek. Kelly flushed a huge javelina but he didn't stick around for photos.
After a nice long cool day of hiking we made camp a little over halfway, in the afternoon, with plenty of time to set up camp and eat before dark. A small fire kept us warm after dark for a couple hours before we retired for the long night.
Following breakfast and breaking down camp we hit the trail at 0811. Bruce coordinated a meet up to hike with us the last 6 miles. Things worked out nicely and we had a good hike to finish off the segment.
Kelly bought us lunch in Payson then Bruce shuttled us back to the Doll Baby trailhead and my vehicle.
Great trip. Thanks, you two! :)

I originally was going to hike in See Canyon to see some fall foliage, but after seeing a triplog from @tortoise_hiker that indicated that there was no colorful foliage there I decided to do this hike instead.

We did a clockwise loop from a parking area on Hardscrabble Road, with a side trip on Alder Ridge.

The highlight of the hike was the first mile or so that went through a wooded area on the way to Oak Spring. There were some big tooth maples there, and the fall foliage was light to moderate. It wasn't spectacular by any means, but it was still decent. Some of the larger trees still had green leaves, so there might be some color there yet to come.

We stopped off at Oak Spring, and there was only a couple of small pools of stagnant water there.

Then the trail climbed up on Hardscrabble Mesa. It wasn't that steep of a climb but the trail was a bit rocky.

We went a mile or so out onto Alder Ridge, and that was a section of the hike that I really didn't care for. The trail was a bit rocky and there was lots of sun exposure on a warm day. The distant views of the Mazzies were nice, but nothing special.

After getting back from Alder Ridge we continued on the loop mostly on rocky forest roads. Once back on FR 428 we coasted back to where we parked. This section was almost all downhill and it was easy hiking, although there were a few vehicles on the road.

Synopsis
I didn't enjoy this hike as much as I thought that I would, partly because the temps were warmer than they should have been. I had previously hiked from the Pine TH to Hardscrabble Road and back, and I enjoyed that hike more than this one.

For day two of our Pine adventures we decided to check out the new-to-us re-route of Arizona Trail #25, but we weren't about to do the long slog from Pine (TH there is still closed), nor did we want approach from the Walnut Spring Trail, so it would take a bit of creative planning. So how about a drive from Hardscrabble Road then South along FR 1655 to the power line track of the 'old' AZT #25 route?

Sounds good, until memory fails, a wrong turn, thinking FR 428 was 1655 by not looking close enough at the GPS track, a chore in itself once on the so-called Forest Roads which had devolved into hardened-mud boulder & rubble tracks. Eventually we made it to the power lines, albeit a half-mile from where I expected to meet them. After taking forever to drive the previous mile, nope, not driving another half-mile, we'll just start our hike here.

Now for the decision. The route I had drawn on Route Editor followed what appeared to be an old road, which I had planned on driving all the way to the #25 re-route. So, do we:
#1. Follow the power lines to my drawn route and down... or
#2. Hike a straight line from our 'trailhead' directly to where I planned to meet the new AZT #25 route, which meant crossing a couple drainages of unknown depth & vegetation quantity.
At 2.5 miles for #1 and 1.5 for #2, it was an easy choice... straight line, or close to it.

By making that choice we would make our acquaintance with Taylor Tank along the way. From there, while there was an opening in the very sturdy barbed-wire fence, we had to decide, which side of the fence should we be on for our cross-country trek? Thankfully we chose wisely ("when in doubt, go right") and although very close a few times, were able to skirt both drainages and connect with the AZT without having to cross the fence.

Ok, finally we're at the 'new' AZT #25. Wow! Although I had never been on the old #25 near here and Tracey had, we both remarked how nice a job was done... it was obvious a LOT of effort was put into the re-route. Tracey had HATED the old route up to Twin Buttes so this was a breeze.

Not long after we began our Southbound sojourn, we met a guy taking a snack/rest-break along the trail. We chatted enough to find out he had hiked in from Doll Baby and was going just as far as Pine then later a skip up a half-dozen passages before hitting the trail again. He mentioned something about good thing I followed the AZT sign (where the 'new' route turned right, rather than straight up to Twin Buttes) as his "AllTrails" app route said to continue straight ahead.

Upon hearing that, Tracey and I both rolled-our eyes, then quickly proceeded to clue him in about Far Out as the hot ticket while hiking the AZT. Who knows if he'll take our advice.
(Side note: After the hike I recommended an edit on AllTrails to let them know their route was well out-of-date. Crazy enough, not expecting any timely update, within a day the route had been updated.)

The descent was relatively gentle with plenty of switch-backs (the guy we met felt some were overkill, like we encountered the Bearfoot Trail) so we didn't anticipate any issues on the return ascent. But at some point it was time to set-a-spell for lunch then head back up.

The ascent was more-or-less a breeze and we were soon back where we had connected #25 earlier. This time we chose to follow the 'road' back out to the power lines, following them back to the car.

We met a number of curious bovines near another tank along the way and wrapped up the hike shortly after. Now it's just the bumpy ride back out to Hardscrabble Road.

On deck for day three... Bob Bear/Fossil Creek, which I only hiked once, some ~17 years ago.

Took the store-bought knee out for a spin to do a little Steward Monitoring and Maintenance between Pine and Oak Spring. This six-mile foray was the longest yet, following some other trail work events closer in. All went extremely well for eight weeks post installation.

We accessed the trail from Cletus-Ray, a street in the extreme southwest area of Pine. The trail there follows an ancient roadbed to a short single-track route through tall pines to the AZT. The first task was to close a short section of trail that was replaced a year or so ago by a more gentle and scenic section. Somehow this reroute hasn’t made it into the official app. Then on to a hiker-reported, larger than expected deadfall which we dispatched with considerable sawing and pry-bar action. It’s high through-hiker season and we met five of them, all intent on real food and maybe a zero day in Pine. Some stop to chat, others seem to be zoned out and just pass by with hardly a nod.

We continued to Oak Spring for a snack break. The pipe to the trough has lost its siphon and we spent time trying-unsuccessfully-to reestablish it. It will take more tools or smarts than we had with us. But water is flowing nearby, and the trough is three-quarters full from maybe groundwater. Then back to the truck; the knee did well, the heart and lungs after nearly a year of much-reduced activity and the background TMB syndrome, not so much. But it’s great to be out and about again.

Another day working on the reroute above Oak Spring. Good sized group of 9 continued with benching and tread work. Great weather.

There is a reroute just above Oak Spring to take the trail off a steep eroded slope and build 800 feet of new trail with great views to the south and west (including The Mazatzals!). Five of us began the work by clearing a 10 to 12-foot-wide corridor of thick brush and tree limbs.

Mom and I wanted to continue our hiking of the AZT through the Mazatzal wilderness since the weather and water sources are amazing this fall. This time we loaded up my mountain bike and I dropped off my mom at the Pine TH. I then drove to Doll Baby Ranch TH and rode my bike on the Crackerjack Mine Road up to Highway 87, then up to the Pine TH. Total biking time was about three hours, and the road was pretty rough, such that I had to HAB (hike a bike) a couple miles of it. The final 300 foot descent on the pavement to the Pine TH made the whole thing worth it, though!

Due to the bike shuttle, we got started with the hike around 1 PM. This meant we had to hike fast to make some progress. With a stop for water at oak spring, we made it to East Tank to camp for the night. The sunset was beautiful and the stars were amazing! I've never seen such amazing stars with a full 360 degree view. There were even some shooting stars--not sure which meteor shower was going on.

In the morning, we decided we should try to make it all the way to the East Verde River, due to an event we were planning to attend in Phoenix Friday evening. So we awoke at 6, were out of camp by 7, and hiked generally without stopping for 4 miles. After a brief break in Rock Creek (dry up here), we continued another 4 miles to Whiterock Spring. This section of the trail was great, with a gradual downhill grade across the mesa. The miles piled up quick, though, and before we knew it, we were at Whiterock Spring. It was a nice area, with a huge juniper that made for a nice well-deserved break. After some more hours on the trail, we made it to Polk Spring, where we were impressed by the amount of water. Finally, after 15.33 miles, we made it to camp! The East Verde River is gorgeous and definitely worth a stop for the night.

Next morning, we awoke by 5:30, picked up camp in a hurry, and got out to our car by 8:30. After fetching the bike from Pine TH, we decided we had enough time to do another hike on the Mogollon Rim...but that's a different triplog.

Not the most pleasant water; we camped near here but didn't use the water.

The spring box was full, and our filtering 8 liters drained it faster than it could refill.

Hundreds of gallons per minute? I'd call this spring more like a medium flow creek that just comes pouring out of the ground!

Rock creek was dry at the crossing along the AZT many miles upstream. Down here where the waypoint is, at the East Verde River, it consists mostly of Polk Spring and is medium flow going into the East Verde River. Nice and cold, and very good taste!

Plenty of water here. The spring box was full and had some green algae, but the water was very clear.

As part of AZT in a Day 2021, I hiked the Saddle Ridge section, the now decommissioned section of the AZT down to Segment 25, and then on down 6 miles of the AZT #25 to the East Verde River. I camped at Polk Spring, which is a pretty nice spot. The next day I reversed my trek.

At many places along the route, the grass and flowers had overtaken the trail, even hiding the cairns, I had to pay attention to make sure I did not get off track. All in all, this is a pretty segment, with good views of the Mazatzals much of the way.

The road directions to the Twin Buttes TH (linked) were helpful. Beware there may be a huge puddle in the road, of uncertain depth, just where it leaves Strawberry. I was glad I had my Cherokee.

The top part of the trail was overwhelmed with fields of Goldeneye, Heliomeris Longfolia var annua. I also saw a smattering of Mexican Creeping Zinnia (Sanvitalia Procumbens), Tansyleaf tansyaster (Machaeranthera tanacetifolia), and white prickly poppy.

Slacking on hike logs lately.. This was a beat the heat hike among the pines and junipers. Quick stroll over to Oak Spring and back from Pine TH.
