I'd had Peak 4618 on my radar for a while, and it worked out for ishamod to join me this weekend. We started at a pullout along FR 172 to avoid the rougher 4x4 roads that would've brought us to Millsite Canyon Trail. After passing a campsite with a few people and vehicles right away, there was plenty of solitude for the rest of the day. We had to wade through a lot of wet knee/thigh-high grass that soaked our boots as we made our way into the creek bed that we followed north toward Quail Spring where the official route starts for 4618. Once we were on #237, the route was very easy to follow, and it's a beautiful area with the creek, saguaros, and cliffs.

We didn't follow the official route and opted instead for the route that triplogs generally agree is the better approach and passes the arches. We left the two-track just north of Millsite Spring to start the climb toward the peak. There are a few long sections of stacked-rock walls in that area that extend up the sides of the canyon on either side...probably built for livestock or to divert run-off? We passed one of the walls as we continued up a ridge--it was a rocky, brushy route but not too many thorns or overly difficult, just slow going at times.

The route leveled off briefly and then climbed again as the ridge narrowed and we worked our way up and around to the first arch, which nicely frames the views to the south. We briefly looked at Fraser Arch on our way up but didn't have the best vantage point, so we saved that for the way down and headed for the summit, which offers great views of a lot of the western Superstition landmarks and a unique vantagepoint looking down on Buzzard's Roost. The summit register had entries going back to 2004 and a lot of HAZ entries from the past 10 years. The peak gets more visitors than I would've expected, but we were the first to sign in 2024.

[ youtube video ]

After a lunch break at the top, we started down and reached a better viewpoint directly across from Fraser Arch, then ishamod wanted to explore around a big cave/alcove on the southwest face of the mountain that was visible on the way up. I waited below while he climbed up and explored...it was obviously empty and looked like a lot of effort with little to no payoff, but he as able to the base of the cave for a better look inside and to satisfy his curiosity.

We followed the same route back down the rocky slopes and reconnected with the road. We saw another rock wall farther south along the road, and an ATV passed us near Campsite Spring. The tall grasses were dry on the hike out, so we didn't have to re-soak our boots, which was nice. Before leaving the creek bed, I spotted a large blueish lizard carrying a smaller, white lizard in its mouth. It ran toward me a several times, which I didn't expect. As I backed off, I got a picture--not a great one--but I'm interested to see if anyone can identify the blue lizard [ photo ] .

It was a fun hike and great to check this one off the list before it gets too got. The weather was just about perfect today, wildflowers were blooming, and the views in this part of the Superstitions are always spectacular. Other than the campers and the ATVers at the end, we didn't see anyone all day.

I did this hike a little over a year ago and decided to do it again. Some of the slopes were steeper than I remembered being.

My route was basically the same as I did last time.

We stopped by both arches, although we viewed the larger large from the viewpoint. It would take some work to get into that one!

Views are nice at the summit on this hike so you get rewarded for your efforts.

This one is a good hike, but I think doing it 2X will be enough for me!

This hike was to the Fraser Benchmark, which is an infrequently hiked peak in the western Supes.

To give credit where credit is due, my name for this hike comes from a triplog comment that @AZLumberjack made. The phrase, of course, comes from this: [ youtube video ]

I parked off of FR 172, near Peacock Canyon.

We started off going through a wash and then took a forest road over to FR 1900 and made our way through Millsite Canyon. We continued onward to near Millsite Spring, where we went off-trail mostly to the north to get to the summit.

Millsite Canyon was nice, and we saw 3 javelina in the canyon on the way back. I think that these were the first javelina that I have seen in the Supes. There was some cool geology to see along the way.

The first 500 feet or so of the off-trail ascent was a bit tedious through some somewhat tall vegetation -- thankfully it did not have a thorns or stickers. Once past this section, the rest of the ascent was straight forward and was enjoyable I thought. We passed an arch along the way, and we took a detour to go to the viewpoint for the Fraser Arch before going to the summit.

There were some really nice 360 degree views at the summit, so we hung out there for a bit and ate lunch.

We returned the same way that we can up, except that we didn't go back to the Fraser Arch viewpoint on the descent.

The last bit of the descent down to Millsite Spring was tedious with some loose footing, and was the only part of the hike that I did not enjoy.

This hike turned out to be easier than I expected, and it turned out to be a very enjoyable hike!

One time with Wally (and Bob).... :o . Sometimes you just want to hike with kids your own age... :D . A few weeks a year the 3 of us are the same age so I thought it would be fun to get out on a hike. Bob suggested this one. It was the company for me but it was a good hike too. The drive in was a bonus as Wally showed his four wheeling skills. I wore shorts by mistake so they rerouted a little to keep me out of the catsclaw for the most part. Neat area. Great views, company, and conversation! Topped it off with burgers at Dirtwater Springs in AJ (thanks Beverly). It was great to catch up, my friends. Like Haz, :yr: .

This is an ATV journey from the Queen Creek drainage at Hewitt Station up to Quail Spring and then on up Peacock Canyon about another mile. We traveled on FS Trail 1900 from the point where it begins at a "Y" branching off FSR 172 close to Queen Creek.

The trail itself is certainly 4X4, high clearance country with a few challenging sections that brought a wheel off the ground navigating the ruts. Erosion from water and 4X4 traffic has created several areas that are slow going and rough. Occasionally as you crest a hill, you are presented with some spectacular views of Roblas Butte and portions of Hewitt Ridge. It's too bad this is an extremely dry year, normal flower outbreaks would surely challenge the senses.

We soon reached Quail Spring after traveling about 5 miles where we parked the ATV's and began hiking the still navigable trail. We found the spring down in the flowage where the sound of water dripping off some of the rocks was the giveaway. There was a small pool with water that could easily be filtered for use if necessary. We continued heading up Peacock Canyon until we found a clearing and had our lunch break.

As we sat there, taking in the views, I noticed a large Butte up ahead presenting itself between some of the closer hills. By the maps, I believe this to be Buzzards Roost (see photos). It was fortunate that some clouds shaded the near hills, allowing the Butte to be basking in the sun.

We hiked back to the ATV's and began our return trip until we came upon an unnamed trail that brought us over to FSR 172. From there we headed North and East into Hewitt Canyon close to Byous Butte where we took another break to scan the mountains for Big Horn Sheep. After several frustrating minutes of viewing the steep slopes with our binoculars and seeing no sheep, we decided to return to our parking place in Queen Creek.

This was an exploratory outing to get back into some mountainous areas where I have not been yet. The object was to travel the 4X4 trails and then break out the hiking gear to complete the adventure in some surely remote and scenic areas. I think this plan is workable so I expect to be doing more of it in the future.

There is dripping water in the creekbed, but no flowage. A pool of clear water could be filtered for use if necessary.

Hiked within 150 feet of the map location of Quail Spring. The vegetation was thick and not worth the effort. The route is an old road most of the way, it turns into a two-track with tall grass, then a path, and then it's bushwhacking. Water was flowing from recent rains so we wouldn't have been able to tell if the spring was flowing. Considering all the vegetation there must still be a spring.

There was a large and creative cairn towards the end of the path but it didn't appear to be marking the path. We looked around the area for a few minutes for petroglyphs or something else interesting but didn't find anything. There were cliffs nearby but they were rough and not conducive to petrogylphs. 33 22 18.61 -111 14 54.68

It's not clear exactly where FR-1900 ends. It would be pretty easy to get into a spot where you can't drive on, there's not room to turn around, and backing up would be very difficult. There were quad tracks more than halfway up the canyon toward Quail Spring--past the Great Wall.

A straight forward hike in an unspoiled area offering special views. Plenty of water still moving and really adds to the overall experience. The "Great Wall of the Superstitions" is a great reason to experience this hike. One can only ask "WHY".

Since I had been camping in this area the week of 3/26-31, and since the HAZ write-up and triplog posts to date for this hike only described this hike starting from the North end TH off FR192B, I was interested in finding out what this trail was like starting from the South end TH off FR1900 at Quail Springs. On this Thursday morning, we left camp from under Byrous Butte and arrived at wet Quail Springs (~4.5 mls up FR1900, the last 1 mile off FR1900 being a serious 4x4-high clearance drive). NOTE: Ideal "parking spot" is large enough for maybe two vehicles and is located on the right side just after passing through 2 round metal cyclone fence posts with the metal gate missing.

I first started hiking at 10:10am up a very steep & rugged canyon  next to Quail Springs that I incorrectly thought was Millsite Canyon  . My hiking partner had enough sense to stay behind after this canyon started to get very serious, but I was determined to find out where it went and if it did indeed follow the map that I was using... Well, to make a long and risky story short, I wasted 2 hours and ~1 pint of blood following red tail hawks up this canyon to find out that I was not hiking on the Millsite Canyon trail  ! So, back to my JEEP and at 12:noon we started up the correct Millsite Canyon Tr 237 route(which is actually the continuation of the decommissioned, serious 4x4 road route where I had parked). As you hike up this very scenic route, which basically follows the side of the creek and crosses it numerous time, all the named springs as noted on the Superstition Wilderness Forest Service Map are there and appear to be perennial! The very impressive rock formations along this trail route hiking from South to North are exceptional with many remote and rugged canyons East and West along the trail route. Due to my late hiking start at 12:noon, we only made it as far as Maverick Springs before needing to turn back, but on our way back, after passing the old Maverick Campsite, we may have located (up on the East hillside) the not so obvious site where the old, original "Maverick Silver Mine" might be located..TBD at a later date- just too bad we were under time constraints and could not go up the hill off-trail to explore what appeared to be a mine tunnel cut in the upper East hillside.

IF you have the correct 4WD vehicle, I highly recommend this hiking route from South to North (starting at the Quail Spring TH), and I should also note that this trail does appear to be a very active but ?not legal? ATV & modified 4WD route on the weekends, so from a hiking point of view, it would be much more enjoyable hiked on a weekday during our AZ cooler months.
