Early morning hike in the Phoenix Preserve. Getting ready to head out of town but I wanted to get something short in before I headed off. Got to the TH just before 5am with the gate already open. :) The Dreamy Draw Nature Trail (as currently signed) is a very short trail; less than 1 mile, so I was going to need something more than that. Started out by doing the Dreamy Draw Outer Loop and then doing some of the use trails that feed off or its northern edge. Enjoyed checking out some areas that I don’t visit very often. You can’t go far on these side trails as they are constrained by nearby homes and the 51, but there are a lot of them. After doing the Outer Loop, I then did the shorter Nature Loop. Though short, this is a very nice trail.

Temps were great for the hike, in the 60’s. No wildlife. Encountered only 1 other hiker.

After dropping my GS off at school and making a pickup in the west valley I hit this up on the way home. Still pleasant temps around 10am and throughout the hike. This is actually a nice loop with the ability to add AEG and mileage to suit. I'll probably do this again (temps permitting).

I saw a poppy!

Turned into tourist day for me as I helped a group of four decide on where to go as I caught up to them when we reached A1 (not sure if it has a name) and they weren't sure where to go. I told them where I was going and that once they got out in the area to just turn left when they were ready to get back to the TH.

As I got to the trail that takes you to the Shoes, I encountered another gentleman who was trying to figure out how to finish off this loop he had copied from All Trails. He showed it to me and I just shook my head. I gave him the All Trails lecture. Then the other four joined us and they had a much better map. I tried to help to figure out how to get the gentleman to where he wanted to go which was via VOAZ. I didn't want him to go down the Irregular as he was elderly.

After discussion, we all ended up going the VOAZ route. Come to find out, this elderly man from Minnesota was 80 :o . Needless to say I was impressed as he knocked out the VOAZ at about my pace; and I wasn't really in the mood for much elevation today (I think yesterday's evening barbell class wore me down before I started, ha!). Anyway, I was glad to be able to follow him up the mountain. He did trip a lot but seemed to manage control. I sat with him at the saddle while he drank some water and re-grouped. I told him I would wait for the others.

When the others arrived, I learened they were all from Boston, altho one couple has been in the Valley for five years. I told them the option I was hiking and that it would be about another 3 miles or so. They opted to take VOAZ back down and go back from there. We talked a little more and I took their picture for them. They were surprised I was from Montana as they said most people they run into are from the Midwest. Stay tuned for the rest of the story.

We parted ways and I headed down the southside. The breeze seemed to pick up so I enjoyed that. I saw the 80 year old hiker heading up 302 so I was glad he found his way. I hope he was able to reunite with his wife, once she figured out where he was. I headed up the high side of the 1a shoe. I really noticed the quartzy section with the desert flora as I got to the top of the Perl Charles Shoe.

As I headed west I dreaded that one short hill that seems to go straight up, but it wasn't really bad at all. I haven't been up this little hill in a while. I continued west on 1a past VOAZ and Irreg C and then around to hook up eventually with the Dreamy Draw Trail and ... wait, where have you guys been? I ran into the four hikers. They really weren't sure how they got there and if they were on the right trail. So off we went up and over the hill to hook up with Dreamy Draw Loop.

We got separated as the one couple got ahead of us and then I realized we were going the longer way around the loop instead of the cut off; but, no matter as we would end up in the same place. The couple with me seemed fine with that though. We said our goodbyes where the nice restrooms were. They were heading to the Biltmore. I told them that's where I first worked when I came here in 1981.

Anyway, it was a delight to have some folks to hike with off and on. It made the hike less arduous and more fun.

Harem (Carey, Christina, Yolanda) hike at Dreamy Draw today. Found one of the last spaces in the parking lot at 8:30 this morning. Lots of big groups mulling about trying to get started. We had a plan and were ready to execute. Headed south out of Dreamy Draw to eventually hook up with Perl Charles counter clockwise, to Irregular Link, Perl Charles again for a minute, and back on Dreamy Draw Nature Trails. Not as cold this morning. Nice overcast skies. Winds were calm. Lots of people on the trails. Saw 3 bikers. Many cute dogs, a few cute dog owners. Delicious post hike treats a Safeway.

upgraded to a hike from canal walks with my good friend and former co-worker claudia
started from tatum at 0530
cool temps and some cloud cover
took one wrong turn on 1A but that made for a little loop and a stop at the dreamy draw parking area before returning on trail 100
nice morning, better than expected hike

Needed to do an errand in this area with minimal time, so this turned out to be the perfect trail. Got to the Dreamy Draw TH around 7am. It hasn’t changed too much, but I like the new look. Around the same time of updating the TH the park service also updated the decals on the trail posts for most of the trails in the system. I was curious to see how it would impact this trail.

I discovered that because of these updated decals there are a couple of things that are “wonky” with the park systems description, as well as HAZ’s description for this trail. There is a trail map immediately across the bike path from the restrooms that gives a nice overview of the trails in the area. The biggest change that the park has done is that they have created two Dreamy Draw#220 trails. There is a Dreamy Draw Nature Trail #220 and also a Dreamy Draw Outer Loop #220. Both of these trails are shown on the trail board and begin immediately east of this board. For about half the loop they share the same trails which is why (I guess) they share the same trail number (220). I did both these trails as individual loops just to see how they played out with the trail board map and HAZ’s description. With one exception, both trails were very easy to follow. The Dreamy Draw Nature Trail #220 is the shorter trail; about 1 mile in length. (The trail board has it at 1.5 miles). It is basically the second smallest loop possible seen as “the official loop” on the descriptor page.

The Dreamy Draw Outer Loop #220 starts out by following the smaller trail but swings wide around .5 miles. (It is basically the largest loop seen as “the official loop” on the descriptor page). This split is well signed at the juncture and is easy to follow. The one spot that might be questionable occurs just below the high point at around .7 miles. There is an unsigned split in the trail. The Outer Loop takes the western path. Otherwise, all junctures are signed or obvious use trails. For some reason the trail board has the Outer Loop at 1.8 miles and my Garmin had it just under 1.6 miles. Besides for the stated mileage being a little off, the park has done a nice job in defining what had been a confusing morass of trails. There are still a lot of social trails to lead one astray if you don’t pay attention to the signage, but these trails are now very doable. :)

Initially I thot "Mission Unaccomplished" but after reviewing my route, it looks like I got most of the Charles Christiansen Trail #100 that I was hoping to find; but mostly by accident. When I started this hike I was rather dejected as I wasn't feeling it. Finally, after a mile, I was feeling a little better about it. I followed the signs from Dreamy Draw TH that said: To Charles Christiansen 100 but it seemed like I never saw a sign that showed I was actually on it. However, it seems hiking to it is the same as I hiking on it :-k .

I noticed immediately how green it was out here; always a great color in the desert. I really wasn't sure I would do Irregular C but decided to at least get to the first saddle. The grade on this trail is nice. I took a break at the saddle and decided to head up to the next saddle. I'm thinking this little break thing might work for me better. Along the way I took a pic of a Many-Headed Cactus and happen to notice the old trail that basically went straight up to the saddle. I've never noticed it before.

As I was heading up to the final saddle I saw some hikers off trail and decided to see where they went. As they came back they said it was steep and really no trail. They were 25 year old Chik Filet corporate trainers from Atlanta enjoying discovering the Arizona desert... no map of course but they did have phones. On my way back down I would run into another older gentelman hiking up, no water.

I headed over to VOAZ thinking I would just hike to the first saddle but I ended up going to the main saddle. Once again, this little trail has a nice grade. I did find the old trail, different from the one I found last time. It was pretty clear trail on the lower section; however, it was posted as a closed area by the trail. I circled at the main saddle and headed back down. I would see one hiker on the way.

I took my usual short cut down to Christiansen #100 and figured I would be able to take that all the way back to the TH. I have been on this part of the trail before, once by myself and another time with someone else but I can't remember who. I got to the intersection with 1A but didn't see any sign indicating 100 so I looked at RS and headed back a ways and then headed north hoping this trail would wrap to the west... well, not exactly. I had spotted a trail flanking a hill as I came over a high part of the trail. It was not a marked trail but I took it and could see foot prints. It takes you up and over the hill and I took it as the trail I was on didn't look like it was going to swing west.

As I got toward the top I saw lots of people action. I decided to go south and ended up on part of the trail I had already taken and eventually I ended up on the Dreamy Draw Nature Trail that I took back to the TH. I saw on RS that apparently I was on the 100 and there was just one blip I missed. Anyway, I like this area so may make this a more regular hike as I can get the elevation I need to practice. I had my beer and then enjoyed the beautiful sunset on my drive home; it was :y: .

WATCH 2:51-5:08PM, 5.41 miles burning 955 calories, 1429-2009 elevation. 136 avg bpm/162 max. Geez, I never reached Zone 5 (168-186bpm), 21% Zone 4 anaerobic (149-167 bpm), 42% Zone 3 aerobic (131-148 bpm), 37% Zone 2 Weight control (112-130 bpm). Temp, a lovely 75.1 with filtered sky and only 19% humidity.

I hadn't hiked out of the Dreamy Draw TH since it had been reopened. They did a wonderful job with the design on this. It mimics what they did with the Piestewa area.

I started a CCW on the paved East Dreamy Draw Bikeway to the Perl Charles Trail and hit up a few use trails, making my way to the Freedom Trail. I made the climb up the Freedom Trail to the Summit Trail and continued the ascent. I get a kick out of the different skill levels that are making/attempting the climb to the top.

I took a snack break at the summit and dried off in the breeze up top.

Down, down, down, and I continued my CCW loop on the Freedom Trail.

My favorite trail on this loop is the VOAZ. Nice geology, a pleasant track, and a moderate grade.

To finish this off, I headed to the other side of The 51 and took in the Mercury Mine Loop.

Filtered clouds and light breezes kept temperatures perfect for hiking. In the afternoon, the clouds started burning away, and I would get a little warm in the sun, but still very nice.

Was curious to check out the revitalized Dreamy Draw Trailhead. Didn't realize it was so far in from Northern Ave. On the way in I did see a Roadrunner cross the road. The last time I was here I had attempted a big loop but got sick and had to find someone to drive me back to Tonto from Piestewa TH. Anyway, they really have done a nice job with the amenities but it is quite the walk/hike up to the bathrooms with a picnic table layer in-between.

I really didn't know where I was going as I only glanced at the area on HAZ. I had a thot of what I wanted to do but it was warmer than I liked so I had decided I would just do 3 miles and call it good. However, I got some extra energy and there was just a touch of a breeze so I was able to do more. Let me just say, what a maze of trails out there, coming and going. I knew I wanted to head toward 1A and somehow make a loop out of that.

I was able to do that and would have done Irreg C if it hadn't been a little warmer than I like, altho in retrospect, I could have done it as I ended up doing the middle and eastern shoes. I'm trying to get some more elevation in my hikes and length too. Gosh, who knew it would be so hard to get back into hiking shape after a two month lapse  . I did fairly well on the two shoes, encountering only 3 hikers and one biker on the entire hike.

On the eastern shoe, there was this guy with shorts and sandals and no water; I bet the bottom of his feet will be a little sore as those sandals looked really thin. I got back to 100 and wanted to stay on that back to the TH but I ended up on 1A, I guess I should have zigged instead of zagged. As I hiked along I kept looking for the trail to go north in the direction of the TH but I didn't see it so I ended up using some other connector that got me to the Nature and Outer Loop trails. I opted for the Nature Trail and as I got further north, I knew it needed to split east/west. I pulled out RS to verify a western turn at an intersection.

I took the rampways back down to the parking lot after stopping for a swig of water. It was a good hike except I did hit a bit of brick wall and took a sports bean to get my energy back; it seemed to work as I quit dragging. I'll probably try another hike from this TH as the maze of trails is intriguing. Oh, I almost forgot, I got a very raucous snarl from a dog that a hiker had to hold back; even though I had stepped aside as I heard its hostility immediately.

WATCH 9:01-10:54AM, 4.74 miles burning 708 calories, 1368-1933 elevation. 128 avg bpm/151 max 29% Zone 5 max, 41% Zone 4 anaerobic, 35% Zone 3 aerobic. 73.3 to start and 30% humidity, sunny.

I was in the area so I checked out the Dreamy Draw trailhead off the 51 and Northern. The 6 bathrooms are the stainless steel hover toilets. The plus over the ones at South Mountain is they have a separate urinal on the wall. So the seatless toilet might not be…on. Hand washing sink right outside the bathrooms! Drinking fountains too but I didn’t try them. Nice parking lot and some long ramps if you don’t like stairs to get up to trailhead. I just did the nature trail and then the outer loop trail. With parking lot wander I pushed it to 3 miles. The nature trail says 1.5 but map is right at .8. 😁

Easy hike to check out how the Dreamy Draw construction is coming along. It was supposed to be done fall of 2022 so they might be a bit behind schedule. Looks like they are at least a few months or more from being done. Anyway nice to check it out!

There was a lot of buzzing going on with the Palo Verde blooming all over the place. And it was loud buzzing; made me a little nervous actually. Kelly would not have liked parts of this hike, that's for sure. But for most of it, when I was in the center of the Preserve, all was quiet except for all the hikers and many, many bike riders; after all, it's Saturday morning.

I did feel the humidity at the start and my gluteus maximus was still pretty sore so it was probably a good thing I didn't do my Barbell Strength as getting up from that first squat would have been doubtful  . And thus, I had to change my grandiose route I had somewhat planned the nite before. However, I did find some new territory as I tried to incorporate a little elevation from time to time. I started at 38th St TH and headed west and around the hills of Happy Hour Ridge all around to the west side and then back up the middle and down, (south) over to 1A where I was just going to hike to Irregular C junction and back.

I saw another trail over to the NW and don't recall that I've hiked over there before but if so, it's been quite some time. I think I was on part of the Dreamy Draw Nature Trail (FYI that TH is still closed but I think they are close to finishing up that new pipeline). The traffic noise is pretty loud here. I checked out this little ridgeline and wondered why Karl and Kathy don't use this as the Happy Hour meet up. In fact, there is a nice flat spot to lay out the goods they bring. So that inspired me to call Cathy to see if she was home as I was a hop, skip, and jump from her house but she was heading out of town. So I looked around some more and checked out another ridge when I realized it looked like there might be an old filled-in mind adit that I was passing by and it was surrounded in quartz too; you can actually see that quartz on satellite view.

I headed back the way I came and back up on to 1A where I felt my gluteus had stretched out enough to do VOAZ so I proceeded up that behind four bike riders. The last rider had stopped to gather his strength and then pedaled as fast as he could to get up this one section; he made it without stopping. It was funny to watch. I gave him kudos at the saddle.

I went down the 302 and then over on the 304 making a mental note to take the 302 down to Piestewa Park one of these times. As I headed west, I gave thot to doing a U of the 304/8 but I decided I was hungry so headed back north off of the 304 to the eastern shoe of the 1A. As I came over the saddle by what is called the Valley Throne, the color of the Palo Verde was lighting up this valley. I think I got one good picture of it as the show was fabulous; it would get particularly noisy as I made my way east near the drainages where many of these trees were abuzz with BEES!

I crossed over the drainage and by it where the sound of the bees was so loud I thot to maybe record it but you've all heard it before. Needless to say, I picked up my pace a bit. So far I've been lucky in my life as I've never been stung by a bee. It was another good hiking morning in the Valley of the Sun; better enjoy it while I can and it really is so much better than going to the gym.

WATCH: 6.43 miles (low point 1480, high point 1922) avg 126 bpm, 151 max (30% Zone 3, 59% Zone 2 and 11% Zone 1) burning 968 calories finishing at 10:14AM. Starting temp a lovely 60.7 degrees and sunny with 30% humidity.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Went to perl charles trail #1a only to find it is closed. Yes I proceeded past the sign to find both paths fenced off 😠 Next headed over to dreamy draw park. Also closed with entire road blocked off 😒

I then went to the N PHX preserve to find it overflowing with vehicles. I parked in the street & started on the opposite side of the parking lot from the majority 🙂 Avoiding the Yates trail led to less people yet.

Continued W & then S. Now in the mtns it became difficult for me to follow the write up since I didn't have the track. Was unable to DL it since I'm out of data again 😣 I then paved my own route. I ended up coming across the 1a trail I had originally sought out.

Continued past the VOAZ jct but would like to return there for a future outing. Past Irregular Link & onto the 220. Then down toward a busy road. Did a mini loop & then began the route back as the sun began to drop. Took a slightly different route back. Ranger locked the bathroom just after I walked out.
