We did a short tourist hike in the evening and short warm up for the main hike next day. As expected there were lots of people, but neither of us had ever hiked out to Bright Angel Point overlook. We could see the Obi fire burning across the way on Walhalla Plateau but did not affect our planned hike of Old Bright Angel. After the tourist pics we headed back on the Transept Trail and stopped at another lookout before dark.

This trail starts at the turn off for the backcountry permit office. It's right where the Bridle trail crosses the road coming from the NK Trail. It goes between the rim and campground and under the rental duplexes before going right below the lodge and some great views. It's two miles to where it connects to The Bright Angel Point Trail. Then after checking out the Point you connect to the Bridle trail for a loop back to your starting point. I went through the lodge. That lounge area with the big windows (and Brighty statue) is pretty cool. Wouldn't you know it the Deli opened just as I was passing by :o . Hiking the Bridle Trail back was enjoyable with a slice of pizza and a drink. :y:

I survived my first Rim-to-Rim :D

The North Rim Lodge is a real treat! It is not crowded, and the building is far more stunning than the South Rim buildings.

Due to some misunderstandings on my part, I was scrambling around the North Rim Lodge looking for the trailhead and got separated from my group. Somehow I had convinced myself the trail at the back of the North Rim Lodge would connect to a rim-traversible path. It didn't. I ended up catching a complimentary shuttle to the trailhead and ended up running the first several miles of the North Kaibab to catch up with my group. It was a mite chilly at the trailhead: low 30's. I caught up some of the group members, and it seemed like they were following an every-man-for-himself type of trip style (they didn't even realize they had left me back at the lodge), so I followed suit.

The pack-animals at Phantom Ranch looked rougher than any I've seen in Havasupai, btw.

I wasn't able to run much after Phantom Ranch. The Devil's corkscrew really kicked my patootie, too! The pathway I took was North Kaibab directly to the Bright Angel. I wonder if perhaps North Kaibab :next: South Kaibab :next: Tonto East :next: Bright Angel is more pleasant :-k

I was having a hard time keeping from ralphing near to Phantom Ranch and then again at the last 3 miles of the Bright Angel--from over-exertion due to the running, I gather (as opposed to sunstroke or heat exhaustion).

I left an hour after my group, and I still ended up beating all but 4 of the 25 to the top (would've only been beaten by two of them had I just tossed my cookies and kept moving near the end, too).

I took the shuttle over to Mather's campground to take a shower after, and then I headed back to Bright Angel Lodge for some ginger ale for my poor tumtum, but I ran into my group in the parking lot: "Get in the van, Nathan." Fortunately, they hadn't been waiting too long, and I smelled wonderful. :)

Just one bit of a 4 night stay at the North Rim Campground. We had quite a group up there with a bunch of my in-laws. On this day, we had a late afternoon shower but some sunlight starting to peek through the clouds indicated that a rainbow might be in the cards. The hunch paid off! A full double that just wouldn't stop. I got up on the big rock and secured a spot for the rest of the show. Soon I was joined by a lovely family from North Carolina that had just hiked the across the canyon from the South Rim. They had a bunch of kids (some were teenagers) plus the dad and they were all super friendly and definitely joke-crackers. I had a great time bantering with them and enjoying the beautiful light and weather at the most beautiful place on earth.

Parking at the North Rim Lodge can be challenge. Luckily there are quite a bit of parking spots. You just may have to wait for a bit or walk a little ways to get to the Lodge. On our first of two visits we actually got a parking spot quickly but we did have to walk a little ways to reach Bright Angel Point . But hey, we're at the Canyon. If you can't walk a little ways and enjoy the scenery at the Canyon then you have issues. We parked and followed a trail that hugged the edge of the rim which took us to Bright Angel Point. We did the in and out and then followed a trail that went by the Lodge (which was awesome! Had dinner there one evening. Great views! Great food!). We hit a couple of the overlooks and then headed up a user trail that took us through the cabin area. Great views all around. Would have been nice if one of the overlooks had a "guide" naming all the landmarks that were before us.

Continuing on our trip across Northern AZ after our Flagstaff stop, we headed up to the North Rim. after a 2.5 hour drive we checked into the Jacob Lake Inn and got a cabin for our family group (sister-in-law and nephews included), spent most of the night on the porch in the cool night air, and in the morning headed to the North Rim. Right after we entered the park, a herd of bison were grazing in the meadow. We had stopped in the Kaibab visitor center next to Jacob Lake and the employees there said that it was bison hunting season and the bison knew exactly where the imaginary line was there the hunters couldn't shoot them and headed right to GCNP. They were dead on correct.

We got started about midday and started along the Bridle Path towards the Bright Angel Point Trail. From there we did the tourist death march out to Bright Angel Point and then northbound towards the Transcept Trail. along that portion, we did the stops at the overlooks to the obligatory pics of the scenery and kept on. Not far along the Transcept Trail, we encountered some orange tape that "suggested" that the trail was closed. But there was not official sign or notice anywhere declaring this. this was also next to a small wooden bridge across a narrow drainage. I immediately ignored the tape and coaxed my extended family to follow me across the drainage. they were very reluctant at first, but once Dmitri made it across easily, everyone else followed. we encountered about four more taped off sections, which were there for flash flood washout sections, which didn't look so bad. just after the last taped off area, we encountered another family coming the other way, which seemed to calm my wife down.

After the first big switchback on the Transcept Trail behind the cabins, we had lunch at the bench under the pines overlooking the open end of the Transcept. since this was just short of the junction with the short trail that connects to the Bridle Path, I suggested I move along with my planned hike to loop the Transcept and Bridle Path Trails and meet up at the visitor center.

Once I got the ok on that, I headed onward on my planned loop. Once the Transcept Trail heads a bit past the nature trail junction, it heads into the pines and junctions with the Bridle Path. I hiked the Bridle Path section to the Kaibab Trail and then back to our parking area, completing the nature trail midsection out and back that my family did without me.

The area had the typical tourist hordes, but since it was the peak time of year, we rolled with it as we were in the Griswold mode, and expected as much. it was still better than the South rim from everything I've read recently.

For avid hikers this little jaunt to the point is no problem. If you are sightseeing with friends or family who do not get outdoors much, the trek out to the point may be a bit of a challenge. My kids (10 years old) did just fine but hubby and some other members of our group had to take several rest breaks. The view is worth it, of course, so it's well worth the effort for them. :)

Back out to Bright Angel Point for night sky viewing and photography before leaving the North Rim. Met a Mass-hole named Jay (actually, he was a nice guy), and talked constellations with him for a bit.

Arrived at the North Rim in the early afternoon and decided to check out the lodge area and go down to Bright Angel Point. I've of course been to the South Rim hundreds of times, but this was my first time at the North Rim. For the reputation it gets as being "not crowded" compared to the South Rim, it was actually more crowded than I was expecting. Yes, the sheer number of visitors is less, but there are also less viewpoints, and the viewpoints themselves are much more cramped, and there seems to be less room to roam, so I actually thought it felt a little more crowded at the North Rim per my expectations going in. I barely lingered at Bright Angel Point because the standing room was so small and was quite full of people. On the way back I went out on the Transept Trail for a short distance before cutting back to the parking lot using an unmarked but well used social trail. After leaving the lodge, I went by Point Imperial and Vista Encantada but just took glimpses before heading to what I considered the main attraction of the day, a dayhike out to Cape Final.
