Day one of three at Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Evening hike after getting camp set up and relaxing for a bit. We hiked to two mines, Victoria and Davis. Fun to poke around. Got back as darkness set in. Good day! :)

Hiked to the Lost Cabin Mine home ruins and back. Looked at the Victoria Mine and home ruins on the way, as well.

This was a hike to the highpoint of the Sonoyta Mountains, one of 193 mountain ranges either wholly or partly in Arizona. The Sonoyta Mountains are in the southern part of the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, about 3-4 miles from the US-Mexican border.

I started the hike at the Senita Basin Trailhead. On the drive, once I got near the trailhead I saw a few of the rare and elusive senita cactus, which was neat.

I hiked about a mile on the Senita Basin Trail, and then took the Victoria Mine Trail. I went about 1/2 mile on the Victoria Mine Trail and then went off-trail to the highpoint. Once I gained some elevation there was a good bit of grus gravel to hike on, which was a bit slippery. I made it to a ridgeline east of the summit, which had some rock outcroppings that I had to bypass with some minor scrambling which wasn't too bad.

I hung out at the summit for a bit before descending. I found a better route back down to the Victoria Mine Trail that what I did going up. If I was to do the hike again I would use my descent route on this hike for both the ascent and descent.

Synopsis
This wasn't the greatest hike in the world, but it wasn't bad. The two trails that I was on were in great shape and were nice to hike on.

Hiked Victoria Mine trail and Lost Cabin with Victoria as part of our Organ Pipe National Monument trip.

This one is pretty popular as it starts right at the campsite. We got an early start and beat the crowds that were still cooking breakfast when we left and so had the trail to ourselves.

The highlight of this trail was supposed to be the numerous mines and related ruins. Unfortunately, it ended up being signifigantly less interesting and exciting than other mine trails. Most of the mining equipment was removed (and likely reused elsewhere) and so the only real ruins were the stone walled cabins. The mines themselves were all covered with steel grates to prevent people from entering. A necessary precaution given the close proximity to the campsite I suppose but I didn't make for a particularly interesting destination. There were not even any interesting mineral samples nearby or in the tailings piles (possibly they were all collected). This was true at both Victoria Mine and the lost cabin so we were a bit disappointed. There are far more interesting mine trails in the Grand Canyon and Joshua Tree National Park if that is your thing.

As for the trail itself there are some decent desert views (mostly near the campsite) but nothing to write home about and certainly not the best of that sort in the park. The terrain was not particularly difficult or technical so it did not provide much of a physical challenge either.

This theme would be repeated throughout our trip in Organ Pipe with the mine ruins trails being disappointing and the trails to natural features being much better.

I was hoping there would be a good flower showing at Organ Pipe this year. There was a nice variety but Brittlebush was they main attraction along with the cacti! Bruce hadn’t been here before so he joined me for a nice sample size of the park.

Arch Canyon
I only did the easy part of this hike. It was cool to see Bruce from down below and shows you how big the Arch is!

Bull Pasture lookout loop
Some nice sections of Organ Pipe Cactus and Brittlebush on this hike with a pretty good climb.
Views for miles up there. We ran into an older group of 3 we had seen on our first hike. Bruce made their day telling them jokes and taking their pictures. He can be a nice guy! 😂

Victoria Mine/Lost Cabin
This was a flatter hike but I was wore out by the second half. Both stops had partial buildings and I’m sure they had some stories to tell. Some good vegetation in parts of this hike. The pics of the red Ocotillo don’t do them justice. I also spotted a Bursera tree and the start of a crested Saguaro!
Bruce spotted one garter snake on way back.

Nature trail
You can loop through visitor center but we were an hour late so did the out and back. They have a pond with the pupfish.

Thanks for the adventure Bruce!

Denny wanted to get down to the Organ Pipe NM to check out the flower show down there. I'd never been there before, so I was a go. To knock out 3ish new trails for me. The first 2 are on the 21 mile loop drive. The drive itself had some great views and some impressive Organ Pipe cactus.

Arch Canyon
3.08 Miles
1328 AEG

You can see both of the arches from the TH. This was my favorite hike of the day. A steady grade until you hit the canyon and make the turn to the south. It then climbs steeply to the top. Once up top you make an initial drop to a saddle area where you can see the TH, but will need to make an additional drop to be able to get to the big arch. Stick to the east side of this canyon and follow the cairns.

Denny stayed back to try and get photos of me in the arch. He called out from down below close to the TH. I could hear him, but never was able to see him.
[ youtube video ]

Flowers were poppin on the hike and everything was green, green, green.
Brittle bush was the main player, but there were numerous others in abundance.

Bull Pasture - Estes Canyon Loop
4.51 miles
1198 AEG

2nd favorite hike of the day. We did this CCW and went to "The Overlook" on the Bull Pasture Trail and then went to the peak above The Overlook.
[ youtube video ]

After a short break, we headed down and hit the Estes Canyon trail. This was a steeper drop down, but rollercoastered nicely back to the TH.
Same variety of flowers poppin' here. We had lunch back at the TH where I noticed of the 6 cars I could see at the TH, all were from different states.

Victoria Mine - Lost Cabin Trail
7.28 miles
675 AEG

This one will be a one and done for me. Off to Victoria Mine first everything is covered over here, to protect the bat habitat. A longish walk to get over to the Lost Cabin and mine area.
The afternoon sun was a bit warm making this seem to be longer than it was. Following the lead from a @Joebartels / @Darthstiller track, we went off trail short-cutting the route back. Quite a bit of this was on a worn use trail. The predominate flower on the hike were the carpets of Rock Daisies.

Nature Trail
.32 miles
5 AEG!

Last up, was one Denny talked about all day. This one was supposed to be a loop, but since we were there after the Visitors Center was closed, it turned into a much longer Out and Back

All in all, a great day with plenty of flora in a new area for me.

Thanks for the idea, hike and driving Turtle!

drove from quitobaquito back to the senita basin trailhead. bobby did the loop, and i did two thirds of the senita basin loop and then took off on the victoria mine trail, went to the mine, then headed back to the campground where i met up with bobby again (he drove back from the senita basin trailhead). interesting note: no actual senita cacti were spotted on or around the senita basin loop trail. they were all on the drive in, once you got off of the south puerto blanco road.

Exploring the Victoria and Lost Cabin mining areas. TH is at the campground offering easy access. The new border wall is visible atop Monument Hill, one of its more controversial locations. It's all lit up at night too, like the Empire State Building.

This is a decent little hike, but I'm not quite sure why it's in the 100 Classic Hikes in AZ book :-k . I enjoyed it, but I don't know that I would think of this as classic, must-do hike for AZ. Since the weather is still cool this time of year (especially for this year), my plan for the day was to head down to Organ Pipe NM and do this trail and the Estes Canyon-Bull Pasture Loop, which are both in the 100 Classic Hikes in AZ book. Arch Canyon was also considered to add mileage, but we ended up not having enough time to get that one in. Breaking up the day into two short to moderate length hikes gave me the advantage to use my smaller M.U.L.E. Camelbak, which I normally use for jogging. I just got it for Xmas this year, so I've been having fun with the new toy lately  . It's made to military specs, but is blue digital cammo with some added decoration.

Joe and I arrived at the visitor center at about 7:30am to get an entrance pass. The ranger vacuuming the welcome mat in front of an open door told us that the center wasn't open yet as we tried to walk by her. They didn't open until 8am and we didn't want to sit and wait. I asked if it was ok to just go and pay later, would we have to worry about getting a ticket. She said no worries on a ticket and we were off 8) .

The trailhead is at the southwest corner of the campground, which seemed to be full, mostly with RVs, but there were a few tents. Our start at 7:45am didn't seem really early to me, but when we started, all the people we saw were elderly. It gave us the impression that this spot seemed to be favored by retirees. It wasn't until after the hike when everyone was awake and active at their campsites that we noticed younger people.

The hike in to Victoria Mine is uneventful. Mostly level, some stream crossings give moderate AEG. The views to the south are expansive, mountain ranges in Mexico are very prominent. The Victoria Mine was kind of interesting. The remains of the building that used to be some kind of shop or store was cool, along with the flywheel outside. All the open mineshafts have pretty sturdy protection around them to prevent fatalities. I was able to get a glimpse down into one :scared: .

I noticed on the park map that there is another trail from Victoria Mine called the Lost Cabin Trail that goes to not-so Lost Cabin, which we found. This was another 1.8 miles in from the Victoria Mine. Since we drove a good 3 hours to get there, it seemed like the best idea to make the most of our opportunity. If I was ever to go back to hike to the Lost Cabin, I would have to hike the Victoria Mine Trail all over again, so it only made sense to go check this out : rambo : .

The Lost Cabin Trail follows a dirt road south and then west and over the saddle of a hill that the Victoria Mine is at the base off. Then it turns north and goes to the Lost Cabin. That cabin is in worse shape than the store at the Victoria Mine. And it also appears that some critters have made some nests amongst the strewn stones that used to be the walls :o .

Just up the hill from the cabin is the Lost Cabin Mine. We took the road over to that and checked it out. From the mine, it was only about another 100' max up to the top of the hill. I don't relish off trail hiking, but this was a no brainer to hop over the hill and make our way back to the Victoria Mine and the car. I would say we easily saved a mile on the return trip, maybe more. On the east side of the hill on our way down we found an unofficial trail that we took to the north until we got down to the flat part. There are several signs in the park that warn about activities of illegal migrants, so we were wondering if this was a trail that they use. Seems plausible.

After we were done, we had a quick lunch at my car and then headed back to the visitor center to pay the entrance (exit?) fee, and then head over to the Estes Canyon-Bull Pasture Loop. We got there just after 11am and the one ranger who is the designated fee collection ranger (???!!!) had just started to give a half hour presentation to a group. The ranger working the cash register (who is NOT a designated fee collection ranger and therefore could not let me pay ](*,) ), suggested I just use one of the self pay stations in the park, just like the Maricopa Co. parks. This was not relayed to us in the morning. I paid for my obligatory refridgerator magnet that I always get from visits to new places, and we were off to our second hike of the day.

Playing Field
I've least visited NE AZ. SW is second. Last year riding the city busses I learned an oddity, $8 RT to Ajo! Nothing remotely desirable to hike within walking distance shelved that eye opener.

Fresh Exploring
The drive has its fair share of blah. A short stretch through the [ SE Crater Range :: map ] begged attention. Chris called it a field of mini Weaver Needles. Signature Krylon Pictographs dominate the low hanging fruit.

Stargate Arrival
While I'm no magnet or knick knack collector I am human. It's exciting visiting a new place declared special. Vegas exists because throwing a few hundred bucks in the trash at home is obviously stupid. Naturally we wanted to see better organ pipe cactus than the previous million visitors!

Lots of skinny photogenic Saguaros. Only a few of the monument namesakes along the drive.

Victoria Mine Trail
If you love Warpaint to the base of Corona at South Mountain this might be your ticket. In all fairness it does sport lush stretches of desert flora. I enjoyed, just can't recommend for the drive. Organ pipe cactus are lucky to survive among all the cholla varieties. The most chain fruit cholla I recall outside the Superstitions. Ambika went all out on the description, I should have read it before the hike.

Lost Cabin Trail
Finally a hint of elevation change saved me from hyperventilating. Even if you don't go to the cabin, another easy half mile from Victoria's Secret Relics puts you in a sea of organ pipe cactus! The hike is a road. I'm not a rock hut or mine fanatic so while I enjoyed the first half this wasn't whispering return. Forget hollering. Chris agreed to jump an easy ridge to get to the next hike quicker.

My first trip to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument! :D
It was a great success right up until the point where I ended up in the emergency room of Tucson's University Medical Center - we will get to that soon.

DAY 1, Thursday March 30th
Arrived early Friday afternoon and found that all the tent spots with shade ramadas were already occupied, so I ended up picking #208 ... the end of the line. The tenting area averaged about half full - the RV areas maybe 1/3 full.
Quick trip to the Kris Eggle V.C. to buy a few souveniers and sign up for Friday's Ranger-led trip to Quitobaquito Springs. The tribute to Ranger Eggle outside made me tear up. :(
Back to the tent, and then headed out on the Victoria Mine trail. I wasn't really in the right state of mind for the hike - hadn't relaxed yet, and between walking directly into the sun and the wind blasting in my face I didn't enjoy it too much. It's a gorgeous slice of Sonoran Desert for sure, but nothing really new to me ... I don't know what I expected. The few times the wind died down enough for me to deploy my new Gossamer Gear umbrella I really liked it - definitely something to be said for hiking in your own bubble of shade! The flowers were pretty impressive too. After spending a few minutes exploring the mine area, I headed back and enjoyed having the sun and wind at my back this time.
After watching a fun group of women perpetrate some campground shenanigans with a Hello Kitty kite, I busted out my book - began re-reading the fascinating "The Devil's Highway" by Luis Alberto Urrea ... it was made all the more riveting this time around since I was reading in the very area where the action unfolded. It was so good that I stayed up reading until I finished it at almost midnight. The book states that back then there 200,000 people crossing thru ORPI every year - I can't even imagine what it must have been like! Just crawling with crossers and Border Patrol. On this trip I saw none of the former, but plenty of the latter. Don't know if it's still considered the "most dangerous National Park", but it seemed safe and serene to me.
Side note - as I was watching my air mattress inflate, out popped a big nasty scorpion ... as if I figured ORPI didn't have enough scorpions, I brought my own from home! :o

DAY 2, Friday March 31st
Up at 6am with the sun - slept well and felt good. Noticed a small but semi-nasty looking bite on my wrist, which would sometimes itch intensely ... no big deal.
Headed out Puerto Blanco road a ways to hike the short Red Tank Tinajas trail. Noticed a Humane Borders water station there - it made an impact on me especially because of the book ... the suffering of death out there in desert is unimaginable. The tanks weren't much - one pothole holding maybe 3 gallons of water, but it was a nice warm up hike.
Upon arriving back at the campground, I cruised thru looking for anyone departing a site with a ramada, and Bingo! Quickly claimed #187 and moved my stuff ... much better, especially since I was able to hang my hammock from the ramada poles. Enjoyed some down time around camp, and was finally relaxed, happy to be there and in the right frame of mind.
Soon it was time to head over to the campground pick-up spot to meet the Ranger and shuttle out to Quitobaquito. Saw my first rattlesnake of the year along the way - a western diamondback crossing the campground road.
Shared the van ride with a couple from CA and a family from Germany ... it was a fun, bouncy ride! Along the way, I noticed that my bug bite was looking a little redder, but still wasn't too concerned.
It was interesting to see the different border fences along the way. For about 5 miles from Lukeville/Sonoita, there is a pedestrian fence - couldn't really tell how tall since we weren't that close at this point, but it was interesting to see how it ran up and down some pretty big/steep hills. Farther on we were driving right next to the fence, but it was just a vehicle barrier by then, as it should be. The Germans were quite interested in the fence (and possible future "wall") and the CA couple and myself shared similar views about the whole thing. At the Quitobaquito parking area, we checked out the fence - why is it so tempting to hop over and back? There were two useless strands of "barbed" wire - the lower one actually being barb-less ... we discussed pronghorns and jaguars and such crossing ... don't think the young seasonal Ranger knew about proghorns not liking to jump.
It was great to finally see Quitobaquito! I never would have guessed how shallow it is. There were some researchers there doing a study on the desert pupfish and mud turtle populations, so we got a good look at the adorable pupfish. :)I was a bit sad that the famous cottonwood tree you see leaning out over the water in many picture is no longer there - missed it by about 6 months.
After getting back to camp, I was off on a quick trip to Ajo for ice and a yummy Pizza Hut pizza. Stopped at the WHY NOT store for gas and had a nice encounter with a LE Ranger - love those guys!
Strolled up to the campground amphitheater for the 8pm program, but it wasn't very interesting to me and I left early.

DAY 3, Saturday April 1st
Felt good when I woke up and set about getting going for my planned Arch Canyon hike. When I took off my fleece to change into hiking clothes I got a nasty surprise - the bug bite on my right wrist now had a bright red line of infection streaking up to my elbow. Uh-oh, no bueno! I knew I had to deal with it, so I got online and found out the Ajo clinic is closed on weekends - so I would have to head back towards home and seek treatment in Tucson.
I stopped at the V.C. to get my "hike for health" pin and desert ranger patch ... I love all the free stuff that NPS gives out. I showed the Ranger and volunteer my arm, and they were quite concerned ... they were thinking brown recluse spider, which had certainly occurred to me. The volunteer wanted to call EMT Rangers, but I told him it's ok - I promise I am headed straight to Tucson for treatment. The Ranger was most sympathetic about me having to scrap the Arch Canyon hike - she said it's a good one.
Two and a half hours is a long way to drive when you're worried about your damn arm falling off! :scared:
I stopped at the convenience store in Sells and the Fire Chief happened to be there. He thought brown recluse too, and told me to not bother with an urgent care clinic - he said go directly to the UMC emergency room. He also made me promise to pull over and call 911 if I started having trouble breathing ... now I am getting really worried.
Made it through the 4th and final Border Patrol checkpoint - had a good chat with the Agent there.
I finally arrived at the ER and was whisked in for my work-up within 5 minutes. This was my first visit to an Emergency Room and from what the various doctors and others were saying, it seemed like it would turn into my first night in a hospital too. I called Michelle to let her know to take care of my cats.
Over the course of the next five hours I received more medical attention than probably my whole life combined. I had vitals taken and blood drawn several times, got two different IV antibiotics, a tetanus shot, a Benadryl shot, and more oral antibiotics. Nobody could believe that it didn't really hurt - the first doc even offered me morphine, which I almost accepted just because it sounded fun to try - glad I said no thanks though, or else I wouldn't have been able to drive home. The doctor who seemed to know the most about it thought that my bite was from a cone-nosed kissing bug, since it didn't hurt when it happened, and just itched afterwards. They put me in an observation room after all that, and an hour later I asked to be discharged instead of spending the night, and they agreed. It was a long, uncomfortable two hour drive home, with both arms hurting - the left was worse from all the needles - and all those drugs coursing through my system.
Finally got home, showered, and gratefully collapsed on my couch. Nothing felt better than my bed that night.
So today, it is more sore - but less red. My face is swollen up due to the antibiotics. I think it's gonna be ok, but I have packed a bag and prepared for a return visit to the hospital if need be. Hope this doesn't put me down for the whole rest of my vacation! ](*,)

Written 4-19-2016 A few of the others were off bagging Sierra de Ajo. I knew I wouldn't keep up and it was a little warm so this was my choice for the morning. I would join the others after hiking Bull Pasture for the hike down Estes Canyon.

So off I went. HAZEl and me. I finally found the sign-in box and headed on my merry way toward Mexico. You can see the mountains to the south so it's a nice view until the trail takes you up and down the several washes and switches directions several times toward the western Sonoyta Mountains. It's always an interesting hike when I really don't know where I'll end up in this landscape so I was guessing a lot.

I did see an ant pile where they gather the blooms of the ocotillo and do something with them (I have pictures and video). Maybe build a garden for their queen? Also heard some birds but other than that; it's pretty quiet out here. I finally came upon a road that had some more signage. There is apparently some other hikes you can do to some other mines. I know the NPS runs shuttles where they can drop you off at various routes and you can hike back to the campground; might be worth checking it out.

Finally got to the mine and spent a lot longer there than I thought. There are several steel-like bar structures over the adits which are now apparently home for the bats per the signage. There is some old track and one topless rockstone building that has cool views to shoot photos from within toward the south. After wandering around I got my fill and headed back to the campground trying to make some decent time. I did have to stop a couple times for pictures of the Ajo Mountain range. I met about 7 other hikers coming out.

The trail looks like it's had some recent maintenance and has steps and benches in various areas. It really was a pleasure and you know how I feel about hiking and gawking :D to my heart's content.

ORPI December 2013

It seems like if it’s winter in Arizona, it’s time to take a trek down to the Mexican Border and go explore Organ Pipe (ORPI) Cactus National Monument. Check out :next: http://www.nps.gov/orpi/index.htm

Last year saw Mt Ajo tackled :next: http://hikearizona.com/photoset=23249

I’ve had some ORPI backcountry adventures including El Camino del Diablo :next: http://hikearizona.com/photoset=7356 and Quitobaquito via Puerto Blanco Loop (albeit aborted) :next: http://hikearizona.com/gps=1004 plus some others…

When I arrived at the ORPI Visitor Center today, I asked if there were any “re-opened” areas in the park. Ranger Krystina indicated that they just began issuing limited special permits (5 per day) on Sunday 22Dec2013 to travel 6 miles beyond the "pit toilets" to the Dripping Springs trail head. I scored permit #3 for today. This is all part of a grand experiment to reopen the Puerto Blanco Drive loop to Quitobaquito Springs in small increments. Let's hope the experiment is a success! For consideration :next: http://www.tucsonweekly.com/general/pdf ... mpacts.pdf

“Rest of the Day” recap;

Coffee and bagel at 48th & Ray Road Einstein’s - rendezvous with additional Trekkers
Shawmut Trainspotting Loop aborted due to a Border Patrol activity - 2 males being taken into custody at sunrise
Ajo open pit mine visit
11 miles from Visitor Center to Dripping Spring TH
Also had time waiting for sunset at Desert View Trail and Victoria Mine Trail
Left the park after a disappointing sunset for Mexican food at Marcella’s in Ajo

7.86 miles, 640 AEG (64 floors) on Fitbit
264 total photos (62 on iPhone, 108 on 6D, 61 on 7D, 33 on rebel XT)- will post some when I get the chance

PS. That annual NPS pass came in handy once again!
PPS. Will Puerto Blanco Loop be recovered as an ORPI backcountry option? :next: http://www.americansouthwest.net/arizon ... drive.html :)
PPS. Still planning that El Pinacate y Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve. Can we make this happen in 2014? http://www.nps.gov/orpi/planyourvisit/pinacate.htm and http://dsc.discovery.com/tv-shows/north ... -altar.htm

Nice little hike to check out the Victoria Mine in the Organ Pipe National Cactus Monument. It is cool to see this slice of history. An easy and quick hike but a whole afternoon could be spent around the mine area. Saw a couple Jackrabbits, and 2 Coyotes in the surrounding area.
