Wifey and I on a hiker date! Took the connector to Esperero from the overflow lot, then cut over to Rattlesnake and the road. Did the road walk back to Esperero, then hiked until we decided it was going to get dark if we didn’t turn around. So we went back to the car. Had dinner at Zinburger. Yum.

After a *separate* trip to Mt. Kimball + The Window + Window Peak, Cathedral Rock was considered a must do. This hike really was an adventure. The only other trip up Esperero Trail was about two months prior. We encountered heavy snow and knew we would have to return later.

The last half mile of this trip had a bit of snow. The entire area after the Cathedral Rock Trail turn off is just incredible. Seems like things move at a different pace up there. Very remote feeling.

The rope was still in good condition. The climb up wasn't bad, but I can see some being weary about attempting this last section. I used the rope to get up and down.

This is one of the bigger day hikes I have done so far. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Did this one solo on an absolutely perfect day. Beautiful weather and clear skies, no better place to be than this summit. 3rd time up there. Finally figured out the approach without having to bushwack. The rope has been replaced since the last time I was there so it's less than 4 years old

Also the anchor is now legit. Proud to say I only needed it to get down since my climbing / scrambling skills have come a long way over the years

. Tons of water in esperrero canyon, beautifully clear and cold. I need to do this one more often. Always worth the effort.

Also- if anyone knows anything about peak 6060 near the esperero trail please dm me! Looks like a great time.

We started out the day just after day break. The pretty sunrise colors were still in the sky as we turned onto the Esperero trail. We took a couple short breaks at Cardiac Gap and Bridal Veil Falls. Mark had started with us but he wasn't feeling good so he turned around before the falls.

The first challenge was climbing into the Inner Sanctum of Cathedral Rock. The handline at the notch was missing. I'm 8+ weeks out from a total shoulder replacement and haven't done any climbing so Garrison grabbed by pack and Mike boosted me up until I could clamor up on my own. In the Inner Sanctum we ate our first lunch. I ate two pieces of pizza. Carole whips out pumpkin and chocolate chip cookies she baked me and then starts playing Happy Birthday on the harmonica! Josh pulls out an espresso maker and starts to brew me a double shot! He pours it into a fancy espresso cup that he had been carrying. These people are crazy! Did they really do this for me??? Yep!

After lunch, we go to the summit climb. I still hadn't committed to the actual climb. But let's face it, I had gotten this far do you really think I'd turn around without going to the top?? It's likely that the rope is the Sam one that had been hanging there since my first ascent years ago - scary! Remarkably it is still black! Josh who climbed first without using the rope checked it out and saw that the sheath is getting abraded but was still intact. I had left my technical gear the car but Garrison had decided not to use his so I put it on and scooted up the 5.4 crack on the rope using ascenders. After the climb I did the small exposed scramble to the top wth just a few tips from Mike. Soon, I was enjoying the best views of the area but also my third summit of Cathedral Rock. The rest of the crew had gone over to the another set of rocks so it was fun to get pictures of everyone.

After enjoying the views we headed down. The borrowed gear I had didn't include a descender and likely none would have worked because the rope was really thick, so I set up a munter on on a large HMS carabiner and down I went. We retraced our steps and then headed down the extremely steep Cathedral Rock trail to the West Fork.

At the junction with the West Fork trail we had another lunch where I finished my last two pieces of pizza. Suddenly, I realized I had eaten at least 5-6 cookies! It takes a lot of calories to do this hike!

The food gave me what felt like my first wind. The trail up to Romero Pass seemed easy! From there I knew it wasn't long until we would hit the Lunch Rock where I had cached water. We trudged long until we finally reach that milestone.

Chumley met us lunch rock. The breeze there was cold but the views made us sit on the rock and enjoy them. We enjoyed more cookies and drank lots of water to get us refreshed for the final push.

As we started again we could see the Mt Lemmon summit in the distance. It was hard to believe we still had that far to go. There was at least 5 miles and nearly 2000 ft of gain left. We were getting tired. I had done this stretch the following weekend and at that time it didn't seem so bad. So I kept that thought in my head and kept walking. It's amazing what the body can do when you put your mind to it. Granted good physical fitness, proper food, water, and gear are all important. It's not like we could just quit and sit there but it sure would have been nice if the last few miles of the trail had just magically shortened.

The sun started to set and the cold came upon us. I realized how wet I was from sweating. I was so glad I had a change of clothes in my car at the top. The thought of the car and the clothes made me press on even though a jacket might have been a good idea.

Ahead of me I hear a joyful yelp! I just figured it was Mike reaching the cars. I kept going until I too yelped! Our friends Kevin and Kim had met us. They had a cooler of drinks, crackers and cheese, and chips! We were done and a celebration was in order!!!

We changed, munched, and then headed down for my birthday dinner at Gavi near Sabino Canyon.

Started from Ventana trailhead. Went up and took a nice break at the Window. Hit the summit at Window peak and saw Ladybugs!! From there we made it up to the sanctuary and finally to the actual summit. Rope was in good enough condition for us to use. This was my 2nd time up here- the first time I didn't go to the actual top. This time Trevor forced me to make the final maneuver up to the true summit and man was it worth it. Quite the adrenaline rush and I'm not sure I could have done it without a lot of motivation. Stayed the night at the Sanctuary. Beautiful area back there, I will return. Went down through Sabino for our way out. Jumped into Hutch's and took the lazy man's tram for the way out. All in all a very rewarding two days!

We hit this one over the weekend and came a little under prepared. It fought back and hit us hard. Today we came back for redemption. It went well enough this time that we added in a second trip up to Mt Kimball on the return. :y:

Near the top of Cathedral we saw a black rattler. Then on the way back I stepped on one who was napping in the middle of the trail near Window Peak.

It woke him and he wasn't the most cooperative for a photo. I told him I was sorry and we kept moving.

All in all a great trip this go round.

Five days ago we were lucky to get out out alive on the exotic wager despite close relations to the field. Slight adjustments sent smiles home today. Nothing high tech. One of the best hikes of the year. Enjoyed the views, the perfect weather, and the great company.

We started out shortly after 5:30am, heading up Esperero and quickly ran into 3 whitetail. Well up Esperero in the cliffs above the oaks, we heard and eventually spotted a wild turkey. He really enjoyed talking to Denny, who can sound and act like a turkey

Fairly easy going until Cathedral Rock Trail, with almost content stellar views of the Santa Ritas. Then things started getting a little steep. Turning off Cathedral Rock trail to follow the faint trail that turned to a scramble to the top made it definitely kept the heart rates up. After we had been scrambling off trail for several minutes, a guy named Al with us realized his smartphone had come out of his pocket. We decided to push onto the top, and hope to run into it by following the GPS track exactly on the way back to Cathedral Rock Trail.

The ropes area near the top was awesome. Just enough to really push you, but not too difficult. It wasn't until just before the very top that you finally get that awesome view of Oro Valley and all the little peaks to the west and northwest like Safford and Picacho, that looked like little hills off in the distance. Reached the top around 11:10 and signed the register on top, really sturdy watertight PVC tube with a register going back to March. On the way back down, carefully retracing our steps, we actually found his cell phone underneath a tree we climbed over while scrambling to the top. Amazing, I just knew that thing was long gone! Made it down just after 4pm.

Thanks Denny for coming down today, and making the day twice as fun.

By the way, bought a frog towel a while back, yesterday the first time I've used it. It is flippin awesome!! Stayed cold all day. I reset it one (even tho it still had not dried out), used warm water and it still turned cold. http://www.froggtoggs.com/cooling.html

Great hike with Dave and his friend AL. Great temps with an overcast morning and a breeze all day. The trail was in pretty good shape until the last saddle the it takes a little while to follow a route to the top. The rope was a little scary for me but we all made it up. This hike has some nice vegetation with some pretty healthy Cacti(in bloom). Some cool boulders and rock formations along with a cool summit. Plenty of great views!
We got to see 3 Whitetail and 1 Turkey. We didn't see any other hikers from the time we left the pavement until we got back to it. Great to meet and hike with AL and hike with Dave. :y:

When jj mentioned this my eyes lit up. Thick stands of no arm saguaros pin cushion sides of the lower hills. Fair mileage. Excellent aeg with two or three short steep parts that get your attention. That wicked view midway up looking down the throat of a high wall canyon with Wrightson standing proud on the horizon. Goal posts. Oven to heaven temps. Fun scramble at the top.

I've lost count of snakes seen this year due to "Hansenaz's Law of Snake Averages". Snakes stepped "over" increased to four for 2014. This one wasn't a rattler. It tangled on my left foot just long enough to get my heart racing. May have created a new ballet move too. Minutes later a black-tailed rattler buzzed us in passing. We'd recently passed a gal from Washington and I'm thinking she was glad we weeded all the snakes out of the next tenth of a mile...lol

The scramble at the top had me a bit uneasy last time so I skipped it. Last years few rappels made this seem pretty easy now. Used the rope for the top third going up and all the way down. Think I could get up without. Going down without is still outta my league, especially the initial spot at the top.

This one has been on my list ever since Nick and I did Window Peak. Personally I rate this one as high or higher than Window Peak. Both are awesome and I wish they were closer I would do them much more often.

On the way up we passed a few hikers but not many. Then shortly after we passed a girl from Washington Joe stepped on a silver/green snake. I don't know who was more freaked out, the snake or Joe. Joe jumped and the snake did too. I am watching this from a couple steps behind and the snake whipped its tail up in the air hitting Joes legs and then it darted into the first hole away from us that it could find.

A mile later we cross paths with a Black Tailed Rattler. This one was under the bush but wanted to make sure we knew it was there. Beyond that no real excitement just a long chug up the never ending hill.

Up at the rock formations there was a good rope there that we used to reach the summit. Killer views and a fantastic summit! This one is a winner and I look forward to a return sometime after summer.

Did this super long hike with Brian in preparation for our first Grand Canyon hike (South rim to river and back in one day). This was a very difficult and time consuming hike in our early days of hiking.

Down low we saw an assortment of beautiful flowers. Up higher we saw some amazing rock formations, hoodoos, boulders, etc.

Near the summit, we took the rope partway up and it looked a bit dangerous to continue. Also, we were running very low on time so we needed to get moving. I believe our round trip distance was closer to 19 miles because we didn't take the best route going on. On the way down we found a better route that went through a "doorway" and then found a 10 foot rope below the doorway. I suppose this was the better way to go.

We'll have to get out there again and try to actually reach the summit someday. Perhaps we'll need some extra rope or other climbing gear to make it safer. We're not sure of the condition of the rope that's up there and relying on that could be very dangerous. It may be more enjoyable to back pack and camp somewhere out there so it's not a 20 mile hike in 1 day...

fourth time is a charm. snowed out twice previously, and almost blown off cardiac gap for a third failure, i finally found perfect weather for this fabulous loop. excellent flower show in stretches, running water everywhere and perfect temps...yahoo!

came back on phoneline then down historic sabino 23A for the first time. that's a cool little connector between the road and phoneline

well i got outta my car at 9 am and back in the car just before 5, Went up to cathedral rock, ran out of water right after i headed back, there were so many flippin gnats and im chafing hahahahaha! motherf***er, that was brutal, the view was sooooo worth it! SOOO worth it! and i met an awesome dude who helped me find my way back to the visitors parking lot. Oh i also want to mention, i love that you put your money in an envelope for the parking pass with absolutely no supervision, in a society where you see picnic tables at parks and trash cans outside of grocery stores chained down, it was refreshing, made me smile, i love all these people i see when hiking, every one is so nice. all in all, a glorious day!!!

I posted a gps track on 3/14/2013 of this hike by 7 hikers from Saddlebrooke. It is an awesome, butt kicking hike that took us 12 hours from Sabino. I had 18.1 miles and 6400 aeg. Great flow at Bridal Veil Falls. The trail after the first few hundred yards from the saddle is difficult to follow; there are cairns all over the place, so be careful to pick the best way to go up. I recommend the route we used for our descent, even though there is one 20 foot rock chute with a knotted rope at one point where the trail goes thru a gap.

The best addition I can offer to the other triplogs is some guidance on finding the rope to help climb the highest peak. The highest point is the northernmost peak (it's difficult to tell which is the highest from the surrounding area) and is at 12S 514765 mE, 3583297 mN and the rope is on the west (left as you come up from the ridge) side. There is an opening that visitors have hacked through the brush to the bottom of the rope. Actually, there are two good ropes now, both attached to a well entrenched tree in the notch 40-50 feet above. Five of us climbed it, including one experienced technical climber who thought the rope was in good shape and safe (as of 3/13/2013). I can't imagine climbing this without a rope.

While on the top, don't forget to look WSW for an excellent view of Window Rock. On the way back to the visitor center, just try to keep your mind on something other than the hike. It's brutal.

The plan was to snow shoe Lemmon on Saturday. Hmmmmmmm......time to start planning for Plan B with the super warm week we had. We decided a hike was in order for a 60 degree day. Laura came down to meet Mark & me for this virgin hike for all of us. There was some special "family" event going on by the time we got there (10 am), so we had to hike in from a different parking lot. This hike packed a punch, and it really couldn't have been a nicer day for all the gain we were about to endure. We were actually quite overdressed for especially the beginning 3/4 of the hike. Once on top of the peaks, we were a bit chilly and had to put our shells on, but for the most part, were hiking shirtless most of the day. There was only a tiny bit of snow at the top during the scramble. We only say a few people on the Esperero Trail the whole day, and no one else on the Catedral Rock trail. It was a fabulous day, with the falls flowing and plenty of water in the creek. Pitiful I didn't bring my filter, as we all could've used it at the end of the day with as warm as it was. We all ran out of water with a few miles to go. Note to self: always keep filter in pack, no matter what the weather!

Day 2 of my excellent adventure. (Bill and Ted were not present)

I'm glad Nick could join us today for this one. I don't know where he was yesterday.

I was feeling a bit sleep deprived and tired from the previous days 23mi and 3900' of gain, and knew this was going to be some work today.

Like yesterday, this hike started tamely on a paved road. That part was soon over.

Nick assured me that he was hiking "Nick speed" today and would not be sucked into the Twins need for speed. Liz and I did get to see Bob, Dave, Joe and Nick at the breaks. (Never listen to Nick). Their breaks were probably 20 minutes, ours were 5 minutes. This hike was alllll up.

My calves were burning on the way up. The break at Bridal Veil Falls was very nice. What a pretty area.

When I took the time to look up from the trail, the views were just incredible! I wanted to quit many times, but just kept pushing. I told Nick and Liz anytime they wanted to turn around, I'd keep 'em company.

We started the scramble up to the peaks. There was one point where Nick said "That's it, I'm not going over that". I had my opening to turn around, but didn't, Nick followed. At this point Liz was Zombielike. I don't have a clue how she kept pushing on. An incredibly tough hiker, or just plane goofy? I say a bit of both. I heard her snore at lunch.

Either way, the three of us made it to the base of Cathedral and watched Bobby, Joe, and the Davey the Kid frolic on the Rocks.

We ate some lunch at the top, I took some Vitamin I and a 5 hour energy for the Downhill.

Once again, Nick said he does not do good on the downhills. Once again, I only saw him at the breaks with the other big boys.

Thanks to Bob/Nick for putting this together. It really is a special place. Thanks to Joe and the others for all the entertainment. Great meeting Dave and having another to help tag team Joe.

This hike put an end to by Birthday weekend, with just shy of 40 miles and around 10,000' in AEG. Not bad for an old Pumpkin. I was not sore today, but was in totally wrung out, tired, exhausted, world of my own.

Can't wait until next weekend.
