Needed to hit Trader Joe's, thus practice hiking in the area prior seemed a good idea. My original plan was to do VOAZ and get some miles.

Echo: "Should I wear shorts or pants for my hike today".
"It doesn't matter to me as I don't have legs, but it's 70 degrees and shorts all the way" :D

After hiking about 1/2 mile and sore legs from Thursday's Barbell class (hadn't been for a month), I scrapped VOAZ and decided my goal would be little hills and five miles. Plus, initially it seemed warmer. So I headed west but got distracted rather quickly by a small alley way of Desert Globemallow. I continued the north side roller coaster hills around Happy Hour Ridge and hooked up with Charles Christiansen 100 going east.

I zigged, took a break on a slanty big rock on the hill and then zagged to Perl Charles Trail. I didn't want to do the rest of the hill so I staged left (NE) and around to the other side of Perl and did the Shoe. At the saddle I saw how hikers had taken little quartz rocks and stacked them on the black slate looking rock; I thought it was a pretty creative idea. I took a break on the bench mid-Shoe before completing Mile 3. Of course, coming down that hill the sun always puts a glow on the cactus so had to catch a couple shots experimenting with the 3x vs portrait mode.

I headed east to LV Yates, which apparently goes around the mountain. I looked up to see Dixie Peak 2429 and was surprised at the climb one has to do from that saddle to the top :o that I've done a few times. I veered north. I started getting a rib ache as the temps started to cool. I then left Yates and headed North back to Charles Christensen 100 before crossing over to the TH on 38th St.

2 Squirrels, 1/2 dozen quail, 1 hawk, 2 lizards,1 helicopter, two planes. Scattered people but toward the finish, quite a few.

WATCH: 5.38 mi, 3:08-5:07PM, 144bpm/173 max burning 908 calories. 83% Zone 5 max, 13% Zone 4 anaerobic. 610ml sweat loss. Temp 69.8 sunny, 12% humidity, wind 3.7 ENE

Tracy invited me for a hike up in my area so we met at Dreamy Draw and geared up. I decided to hike out the opposite way I normally go, but that didn't work out too well. They seemed to have changed it up a bit as we ended up getting too close to the freeway. We back-hiked a bit and then up to what I thought was the trail... well not quite. We basically moved from trail to trail and up over the mountains on not well used trails.

I am very out of shape and it showed; very disappointed in myself. We continued on up and over and then down to the east side. We finally reached some well used trail as we hiked toward Happy Hour Ridge area on the 100. It was briskly windy until we hit the east side below Happy Hour Ridge. We crossed around it and up a little hill with very nice trail and over to the north side where we took a break.

We continued our route back heading west toward the trail we would use to crossover the mountains. I decided I wanted another break so we sat down. There was lots of plane activity including what looked like a near miss of two passenger planes. There was a lot of Holy S coming out of my mouth as we were scared about what we thought we might witness. Fortunately, no collission but that's the closest I've ever seen two large passenger planes fly, one heading northeast and the other southwest :o .

We finished the hike over the range and down the other side. It still amazes me how poor of shape that part of the trail is in going down the hill. I assume the bikes go a different direction? And from here, it was all down hill. We started seeing some more wildflowers including some poppies and lupine. The whole hike had lots of Scorpionweed and Brittlebush blooming, so that was nice to enjoy. They must have changed the trail a bit or removed that wooden fence and maybe that was what threw me off at the beginning when I missed my turn.

At the trailhead I visited with some Amish from Michigan since I am familiar with their other brethren (hutterites) in Montana. FYI The Hutterian Brethren, or Hutterites, are the final religious group bearing any similarity to the Amish or Mennonites. They share a similar origin with Amish and Mennonite people due to the fact that they are an Anabaptist church.

We headed for Manuels (31st St and Shea) and tried the Margarita Valentine's flight. We don't recommend it. Otherwise, food and service was good as usual.

Oh, it was fun reading our watches from time to time to check bpm and mileage. 5.84 mi, 9:27AM-12:16PM, avg 143 bpm/ 169bpm max burning 1272 calories. 78% Zone 5 max, 17% Zone 4 anaerobic, 613ml sweat loss. Temp 68, sunny, although clouds off to the west, 19% humidity, 8.7mph wind from the east.

I hadn't seen Angela in awhile, so I was glad she was free today for a hike! We met up at the Dreamy Draw Recreation area at 9:30am, hoping to avoid rush hour traffic but SR51 was still pretty busy (later, as the ad plane with the WM Open banner flew by, we realized that event was the likely culprit). We got started on the sidewalk, north (I think) of the parking area and as we chatted away Angela thought we missed our turn as we were getting too close to the freeway, we saw what sort of looked like the trail that we wanted and followed a path towards it. Eventually we reached a sign indicating the Dreamy Draw Outer Loop, not quite what we wanted but we followed it anyway.

We meandered around, up and over, making various connections from one trail to another. I hadn't been out in this area for awhile, so I was glad to have Angela leading the way. :D She did a great job finding the routes with just enough uphill for a good workout. There was a nice breeze, which became windy as we looped around to the east side, Angela pointed out the infamous Happy Hour Ridge (thankfully, we weren't going up that! ), the wind died down once we made our way back to the western side of the loop. And fortunately, it was mostly downhill as we made our way back to the parking lot.

I had to do some parking lot circles to get my RS to match Angela's mileage of 6 miles (I couldn't leave it at 5.97!!) We finished up right around lunch time, and ended the day sharing a flight of "Valentine's Day" margaritas (don't bother, they were disappointing) and Mexican food (yummy) at Manuel's Mexican Restaurant.

Needed to go to Trader Joe's so stopped here on the way for a quick hiking loop. Parked at 38th St. Started out but had to go back and get another shirt for the chill in the air.

Encountered about 1/2 dozen hikers and a few dogs as I made my way to the southern part of the loop. As I headed west I was surprised to see Scorpion Weed, and then another, and another. Oh my! They were scattered all along the trail until I hit the north side. Of course, Brittlebush was blooming but I didn't see nearly the baby brittlebush I have seen on other trails this winter. Very clear today.

It wasn't as green as Ireland either but I noticed there is a different type of grass here and not as plentiful... but there was lots of Scorpionweed. I saw lots of evidence of Rock Daisies, one bloomer. The sky was filled with painted windy clouds of grey. I took a little different route as I made my way to the north side. I got a good view of the quartz area above where I normally hike. With these grey skies, I've noticed different things than normal.

Sad to pass by the new house construction that replaced the community garden. I see they have a couple pickleball courts. Never have played.

I remembered to turn on my watch :stop: : 3.01 mi, 3:28-4:33PM, avg 136 bpm - max 164 bpm (52% max, 42% anaerobic). They have a new stat... this should be interesting for me as I sweat a lot (I think becuz of med combo), 228 ml; I know TMI. Temp 66.1, 33% humidity, wind 1.9 mph WNW

After dropping my GS off at school and making a pickup in the west valley I hit this up on the way home. Still pleasant temps around 10am and throughout the hike. This is actually a nice loop with the ability to add AEG and mileage to suit. I'll probably do this again (temps permitting).

I saw a poppy!

Turned into tourist day for me as I helped a group of four decide on where to go as I caught up to them when we reached A1 (not sure if it has a name) and they weren't sure where to go. I told them where I was going and that once they got out in the area to just turn left when they were ready to get back to the TH.

As I got to the trail that takes you to the Shoes, I encountered another gentleman who was trying to figure out how to finish off this loop he had copied from All Trails. He showed it to me and I just shook my head. I gave him the All Trails lecture. Then the other four joined us and they had a much better map. I tried to help to figure out how to get the gentleman to where he wanted to go which was via VOAZ. I didn't want him to go down the Irregular as he was elderly.

After discussion, we all ended up going the VOAZ route. Come to find out, this elderly man from Minnesota was 80 :o . Needless to say I was impressed as he knocked out the VOAZ at about my pace; and I wasn't really in the mood for much elevation today (I think yesterday's evening barbell class wore me down before I started, ha!). Anyway, I was glad to be able to follow him up the mountain. He did trip a lot but seemed to manage control. I sat with him at the saddle while he drank some water and re-grouped. I told him I would wait for the others.

When the others arrived, I learened they were all from Boston, altho one couple has been in the Valley for five years. I told them the option I was hiking and that it would be about another 3 miles or so. They opted to take VOAZ back down and go back from there. We talked a little more and I took their picture for them. They were surprised I was from Montana as they said most people they run into are from the Midwest. Stay tuned for the rest of the story.

We parted ways and I headed down the southside. The breeze seemed to pick up so I enjoyed that. I saw the 80 year old hiker heading up 302 so I was glad he found his way. I hope he was able to reunite with his wife, once she figured out where he was. I headed up the high side of the 1a shoe. I really noticed the quartzy section with the desert flora as I got to the top of the Perl Charles Shoe.

As I headed west I dreaded that one short hill that seems to go straight up, but it wasn't really bad at all. I haven't been up this little hill in a while. I continued west on 1a past VOAZ and Irreg C and then around to hook up eventually with the Dreamy Draw Trail and ... wait, where have you guys been? I ran into the four hikers. They really weren't sure how they got there and if they were on the right trail. So off we went up and over the hill to hook up with Dreamy Draw Loop.

We got separated as the one couple got ahead of us and then I realized we were going the longer way around the loop instead of the cut off; but, no matter as we would end up in the same place. The couple with me seemed fine with that though. We said our goodbyes where the nice restrooms were. They were heading to the Biltmore. I told them that's where I first worked when I came here in 1981.

Anyway, it was a delight to have some folks to hike with off and on. It made the hike less arduous and more fun.

Needed to go to Trader Joe's so planned this hike prior. It was a nice afternoon as I headed out to do a counter-clockwise loop. My legs still seemed sore from my Sunday hike and Monday gym class, so I already tried to figure out a lesser loop. I continued around Happy Hour Ridge until the west side where I decided to tackle the hill up and over and eventually join up with 100. The crossover was a new trail to me and it zig zagged a bit but got me to where I wanted to be.

My objective for the day was to find the route to the new trail I saw when I was last out here. It meets up with 1a just before it starts climbing south to the saddle. Surprisingly, with more zig zag and zag zig, I met right up with it without backtracking or anything. That was also new trail to me. I finished off the southside of 1a and headed over to 8. I crossed over a tad too soon and made my way over to the wash, in and out and headed south back to 38th St. I took off my hat and sunglasses to enjoy the deeply overcast skies. Near the TH a mom and her two sons asked me where the parking lot was. I told them and showed them. I sure hope that's the one they started at.

I saw 8 hikers, and 8 bikeriders, 2 squirrels, 1 hummingbird.

WATCH actually told me I completed my objective when I still had another couple miles to go.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.

Didn't start out with this hike in mind but as I was hiking west on trail 100 towards Tatum, I figured why not. I have hiked Dixie from both sides but not at the same time as a loop. You used to be able to park near the east trail, but not sure anymore. So I just walked around and made a loop. Good exercise this morning!
