I have been wanting to hike this one for a while and with the heat coming, I figured I’d better knock this one out before the broiler oven starts.

After reading @grasshopper many triplogs, I loaded up the track and headed out.

The path going up seems pretty clear. I made my way up to the little ridge and started up. When I was getting close to the first saddle, I thought about just heading straight to the 2nd saddle. It’s steep no matter which way you go, but I opted to just keeping going to the first saddle.

I was expecting the scree and steepness, but not all the grass. One good lightning strike and this entire area will go up on flames :-(.

I made my way to the 2nd and 3rd saddle and visited the high points that I could. There’s a couple up there that I might have attempted in my younger (and dumber) days. But, I was content with what I managed to get too.

The views up top are really nice. I especially loved the total view of Hewitt Ridge. I will definitely be back up to explore that area in the future.

I made my way down after having a little breakfast snack. Easier going down on this one for sure.

Lots of traffic along Hewitt Canyon Road and all of the gun enthusiasts were out in force along Hewitt Station Road.

This was what I expected. Short, steep and sweet.

This was a planned just "Get-Out-Of-Dodge" day to relax some in the outdoors and to reminisce at one of my (for many years) most popular areas to vehicle group camp in the early Spring, Christmas, New Years, and off-trail hike explore. Through the years including this day trip , I have been here a total of 20 times :o
Lots of memories! [ photo ]

Unfortunately for hiking today, it was a mid-November record breaking heat day at the Byous Butte area. The whole area on the drive in is presently extremely dry with some previously torched areas which was very disappointing to see.

With the unseasonable hot temperatures today with full sun exposure, our off-trail, required route finding navigation skills to summit the first of three Byous Butte Saddles at 3333 feet lost it's appeal very quickly :(

So after a short .5 mile off-trail hike in and back to my old campsite area for better views of Byous Butte under a small, minimal shaded mesquite bush, BLK and I opted for lunch and more reminiscing of better times.

This one looked like it would be fun. Wally,Denny, and I had this day blocked out but we planned on doing something else. I suggested this and another short one and the plan was set. At the meetup,Wally showed me a pic of Denny(aka Mr. February).Denny has a self potrait in a calendar. Lets just say the turtle came out of his shell for this pic. Fun hike with lots of laughs. Oh and Denny made us miss the turnoff for parking.

Another little summit with Bob and Wally. A little steep for me but I say that a lot 😁. Wally showed us a little cave on the way up. Looked to be a lot of sheep droppings up on top. Great views but windy. Thanks again Gents!,Good times!

Peak number one with Boo and the calendar turtle. Hank's route goes to a saddle and along the ridge. Bob took the more direct and steep route. We would have missed the cave the other way so there was a plus side. We scrambled up one peak to find the route went to the easier one. Fun scramble, nice views and a fun little hike.

Looking back prior-to today, between March'07 and December'10, I actually posted a total of 18 triplogs for this Byous Butte off-trail hike area :o . Then a ~9 year absence :? and today-1/17/19, I post my return 19th triplog.

Obviously, I have enjoyed this AZ Tonto National Forest, higher desert, scenic, off-trail hiking area and today was another opportunity to enjoy it once again and to reminisce of previous very enjoyable times and memories here past with many good friends and acquanticiences. Thanks Larry for driving and joining me for this return trip after so many years of being away. A lot of driving I know for only a 2 mile roundtrip off-trail day hike.

I spent a number of these past 19 day hike trips from March'07 working to vegetation clear, to rock cairn, and to finalize an "official" GPS Hiking Route- :next: [ gps route ] up to Byous Butte Saddles 1, 2, 3, & to 3 Hi-ViewPt - :next: [ photo ] from the recommended TH Start as now detailed in the "Driving Directions" section for this Byous Butte hike guide.

My fourth trip since YR2007 to this Saddle 3 Hi-ViewPt was Oregon_Hiker and my planned destination this day and a most enjoyable reunion with an old favorite it was! :D

I reminise. So for this days' off-trail route conditions with more pertinent hike details, please see Oregon_Hiker's triplog: https://hikearizona.com/x.php?x=162536

This was a scenic and short off-trail hike to the top of one of the lower knobs on top of Byous Butte. I don't get to the Superstitions very often and was ready for another venture there. Grasshopper wanted to re-visit one of his old haunts and suggested this hike. He established the official route marking it with cairns back in 2009 and has done this hike several times. The last time was in April of 2010. The drive up Hewitt Canyon Rd has some beautiful views so we stopped a couple of times to take photos. The road was dry with a few damp spots despite the recent rains.

The hiking route starts at the location of one of the many Camp Grasshoppers he has established over the years. GH found his old cairn marking the "trailhead" and we were on our way. Surprising that the cairn was still there after 9 years. We soon found that the first part of the route up the bottom of a wash had been overgrown with brush so we found another friendlier route that got us on top of a fairly open ridge reconnecting with the official track where it starts the climb up to the first saddle on the north side of Byous Butte. GH was happy to see that his old cairns marking the route were still visible although some had partially collapsed. So our hike was somewhat delayed while I waited at the top of the first saddle for GH to rebuild some of his cairns. :|

The one and only real scramble up to the high point of the hike looked a little risky for us two old coots. But after a couple of false starts looking for good hand and foot holds we climbed it with ease. : rambo : We enjoyed a short lunch on top taking in the excellent views and then made a fairly quick (for us) descent back to the car.

Being 6 months since bagging Hackberry Butte it was time to hit a few more summits along Hewitt Ridge. I mapped out a number of possible routes for four separate peaks, leaving the decision as to how many and which ones until I had a chance for another first-hand look at the terrain.

As I passed my designated TH for the first one, somehow it looked a lot worse than the bare stats of gaining 1,000 feet in a half-mile hike. So I kept going on FR172 until the Byous Butte TH, where I still had to decide which peak or peaks to hit and by which of three different routes.

After a few minutes to saddle-up I had yet to make any specific decision but at least all three routes began the same way. This would turn into a novel if I were to go into specifics (one involving bees again), but suffice to say, within a quarter-mile enough weird/scary things happened that I quickly gained a sense of foreboding... and not of the positive kind.
:scared:
I had but one fleeting thought of calling it quits and picking a different hike but instead, I decided to press on, taking it slower and being ultra-careful.

Although only 85°, with 66% humidity by time I had gone half a mile I was already soaked from head-to-toe in sweat... which just heightened the sense of foreboding. At this rate, bagging even the closest peak I would easily go through what I had in my CamelBak and I'd be into my still-frozen emergency 16 oz bottle on the return.

So I decided to climb only to the first ridge then turn it into a recon hike... take a quick look around, scan for the best ascent routes and call it a day, while continuing to be very cautious. Ascending as slow as I've ever climbed, each time I lost footing or the ground slid out from under me the foreboding grew even more... I stopped and asked myself why am I so spooked? I really couldn't give myself a rational answer, so about 3/4 mile left to reach the saddle, again I told myself that's where I'd turn back.

But once I reached the saddle I saw a reasonably-reached, rounded peak across the canyon ahead of me, and realized being halfway between 2 of the 3 peaks on my list it would be ideal to scan for the best ascent routes. Looking at Hewitt Ridge North... well I really didn't like the looks of it, and certainly on this day it was way too much to tackle.

However, when I turned around to look northward, I realized Peak 4285 was practically a walk-in-the-park from here. Being hidden from view most of the hike, I had thought it was farther away and more rugged terrain, but now it was a quick jaunt across a flat saddle, choosing the easiest of numerous route options and I'd be there. No foreboding here... and barely 10 minutes later I'm on the summit. Only a few entries in the summit log (No HAZ'ers yet) so I dutifully added mine.

There was a pretty good-sized reasonably-flat boulder on the summit that I thought would be a perfect spot to shoot my summit pan photos and video, but once I stepped onto it that sense of foreboding returned in a flash... Easing toward the edge I looked down some 350-400 feet and immediately decided to step back and shoot from another boulder... not quite as wide but if I fell it would be a foot or two, not 350.

I shot the photos and video, dropped down to a flat opening and sat down for lunch... after removing most of my clothes and hanging them on some bushes to dry (somewhat anyway) in the brisk wind. Even though 96° by now it felt pretty good. Even though It would be 103° by time I got back to the TH, with the humidity dropping fast and the continuing breeze it felt no worse. I finished the last of my fluids within a 100 feet of the Jeep and of course plenty more in the 12 V cooler.

As to the sense of foreboding... I have no idea why it was so strong, but with a bit of over-vigilance I made it back safely, and that's all that counts. Although it did give me pause, I'm glad I continued on as the views were well worth it.

Speaking of that I took advantage of the many great photo opportunities so hopefully a 50-photo set won't bore you.

Hank invited me on a Christmas hike to his treasured getaway. How could I resist! I've wanted to go here for some time. What I had pictured in my mind and what I actually experienced were two very different things. So many locations truly must be seen in person. A photo can never capture the 360 effect. It is so cool to stand on that butte and take in the surrounding area. This is a special place and I now know why Hank loves it so much. Looking across the upper ridgeline towards the towering east edge is absolutely amazing.

I wanted to experience everything that Byous Butte had to offer. While hiking along the backside, I couldn't help but notice some very manageable gullies leading up to multiple saddles along the top. I just had to see those views! I left Hank along the primary route and headed straight up towards a small saddle below the main tower. The route is a little sketchy near the top, but still a manageable scramble. The payoff was shocking. This spot is not for the faint of heart. I carefully climbed up a small rock slope to peek between two boulders. My jaw hit the ground and it was immediately apparent just how high up I was. Wow is this cool!! I could see Hank out on the far west edge and was able to grab a quick shot looking across the upper ridgeline. He looked so small out there.

I climbed down from my perch and headed cross-slope along the backside towards the saddle that Hank was on. I personally really liked the middle bench along the way and I will add that it's much safer and easier to reach. This butte is a playground and I was having so much fun. I finally reached the far west saddle and was able to look back at my cliff-top perch. Dang, what view! This really is a cool place!

If I sound somewhat melodramatic in my triplogs, it's only because of the passion I have for exploring. I really do live for this stuff. Byous Butte is exactly what I love. Truly a hidden gem! Thanks for the invite, Hank!

Byous Butte 3rd Saddle High Viewpoint- My third year in a row to enjoy one of my favorite places to be on a special day like "Christmas Eve".

An opportunity this Christmas Eve-2010 for me to share this high payoff, short, scenic, off trail hike with Eric and to also have some private time high above to reminisce of previous good times and good memories past.. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=170911 (with our GPSjoe, only one year ago today).

Hiked with Grasshopper showing the way to what he labels as saddle three. This saddle is a large open area on the western end of the complex. Scrambled up the two western points to find lots of Sheep scat though we were not favored with any actual sheep sightings.

There does not appear to be any scrambles up to the actual Byous peak but the small butte between saddles 1 and 2 to the north has a wonderful chimney that would give access to its summit if you can figure away around the small saguaro acting as a spiny chock stone.

The views off the top are excellent and some of the exposure is impressive. It is easy to see why Grasshopper returns to this place frequently.

Route finding with Grasshopper to locate a trail up to Hewitt ridge and Hackberry Butte. We found and marked a route to the ridge saddle. From the saddle we explored along the ridge toward each destination but didn't have time to complete them. This will be a nice project for the fall.

A very enjoyable "exploratory" hike with John over Byous Butte Saddle#1 to try and gain access to upper Hewitt Ridge at 4200 feet and to locate the preferred hiking route to gain access to Hackberry Butte high point at 4230 feet. We did not succeed in reaching upper Hewitt Ridge due mainly to my assessment of just not feeling confident my chosen route today was the least risky, but we did accomplish reaching two of my planned destinations to Hewitt Ridge Lower Saddle.. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=133093 and then proceeded on to reach another planned destination at Hackberry Butte Lower Saddle (which would allow access along the Hackberry Butte Ridgeline to the butte highpoint).. http://hikearizona.com/photo.php?ZIP=133108 .

Both of these saddles had excellent near and distant views south/east/west into "Millsite Canyon" and beyond to the "western Superstition Wilderness". More exploratory hiking and route finding to be continued in the late fall/winter 2010 and into the winter/spring 2011. All good reasons to plan more Byous Butte campouts at Camp Grasshopper! :D

Ref: This remote and completely "off trail" hike is a variation of my Byous Butte Loop w/Hewitt Ridge Cyn Hike I will call.. Byous Butte Main Drainage-Hewitt Ridge Hike ;

I first discovered this remote area last Jan 1, 2009, and soon after completed this subject HAZ Hike Description. Upon arriving at our New Years Day'09 ending destination.. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=82624 I knew I had to return to try and find a way above this 40' Waterfall Class 3 Area to see all that was beyond.

This Christmas Day'09 was my planned return hike. I knew I needed another adventurous hiker to join me and fortunately our HAZ-nonot(Steve) was interested. We started in at 10am from what I call the TH Start at the intersection of FR172/Main Byous Butte Drainage which is very close to the TH Parking area at Byous Spring/FR172 (see my posted GPS Route for all details). Steve led the way and with his good eye for canyoneering and after some scrambling up the NW side of this Class 3 area.. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=117260 ,we successfully made our way up to part-of what I had waited a year to see.. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=117265 :y: .

On my attached pic set I have included a considerable amount of pic caption detail to help add some clarity to this most enjoyable, remote, and scenic area to explore. My sincere thanks to Steve for joining me and with his partial loop hike idea to connect with my Saddle#1 hiking route back to our campsite (as opposed to hiking back out the way we came in), I/we now have a whole new remote area opened-up to explore for my next trip here :GB: .. http://www.hikearizona.com/phoZOOM.php?ZIP=117271

Christmas Week'09 under Byous Butte

Seven of us over this holiday week 12/23 to 12/28 (5nts/6days) enjoyed the backdrop of Byous Butte as we enjoyed sunny blue sky days for hiking, our festive-decorated campsite, R&R, good meals, good friendship, and a few cold nights and mornings with a warm campfire.

HAZ(gpsjoe) joined me this Christmas Eve day for an enjoyable hike up my now completed off-trail cairned route to what I call Byous Butte Saddle#1 and Saddle#2 (please see my pic sets and GPS route for all details). I do hope more HAZers will now consider hiking this newly completed route which opens up a whole new remote area to do more off trail exploring in this most scenic area around-behind Byous Butte and the rugged Hewitt Ridge area.
