Uneventful hike to finger rock. I tried to convince my kids to do an extra 2 miles so we could do the full loop, but they were absolutely not having it!! 😔😔🤣🤣😥😥

Despite the hike being shorter than desired, it was a beautiful day. Lots of people and horses on the trail. The parking lot was nearing capacity when we arrived at 10a (kids also will not get up early!! 😮😵‍💫😥).

Plenty of big pools of water.

Joined a Meetup 2 days in a row. 10:30 am for 6 miles out n back. Ok, I'm not driving over an hour for that. Planned to continue along multiple Lost trails to double the mileage. No takers out of 25 that came out.

A couple others suggested forming a loop. A few others agreed. Compromise achieved. Didn't have the route ready so had to figure it out on the fly. Not too difficult. Got separated through one section where we took different paths but eventually linked up again.

Fairly chill route. Found an unnamed trail that seemed interesting and allows for some EG. May have to check it out further another time. Waypoint marked. Still several other possible routes out here. Drive fairly straightforward.

With the forecast showing nice cool temperatures in the desert for the first time in approximately 893 years (at least, it feels that long) and a comet in the sky, I took the opportunity for a quick overnight backpack. This was going to be a fairly quick purposeful trip so I decided to head to a spot on Arnett creek that I'd been before because I wanted to try and get some pictures of the comet framed by some interesting rock formations. I parked at the L.O.S.T. trailhead north of the Creek. The short dirt road was a bit more rough than the last time I came through but most vehicles should still be fine; just take it a little slow and it's a short road anyway.

The hike from there to East of the Telegraph Canyon junction, where I camped, is nothing too interesting for the most part. The one exception, which has been the same anytime I've come here on the weekend in the past, is that you get great views of the airstrip climbing the old forest road and there are always people out launching/landing ultralights. It's nice just taking a quick break to watch them do their thing.

I had suspected dry conditions based on our lack of moisture this summer but I was still surprised by HOW dry it was. I've always seen a little water at the Telegraph/Arnett junction but it was bone dry this day. The only place I spotted water was about halfway between where the LOST spits you out on Arnett and Telegraph. Only a few inches deep and no flow, but I was able to collect and filter just fine (I like to live on the edge so I didn't bring enough water for an overnight with me; it was only a couple miles to the car so I just figured I'd turnaround and car camp if I didn't find water).

I settled in for a nice comfortable night. I was hoping out of the metro I might be able to see the comet with my naked eye better but that didn't really happen. I was able to get a few good pictures but nothing quite like I was hoping as the time was limited; by time it was dark, I only had about 10 minutes or so before it dipped behind the mountain. Still, good times.

The temperatures were fantastic and it got down to 35 overnight which what I consider about perfect. Packed up in the morning quickly for an earlyish return back to the metro.

Our Venture Out hiking group opted to hike Arnett creek via Telegraph Canyon. Of course, we can't resist looking for Apache Tears which took some time. One of the most beautiful hikes in the area.

I "jumped" at the chance to hike to the Salt River Canyon Wilderness highpoint, but unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans. I was driving on FR 645 and the road was beginning to get muddy from rain the prior day. Before I knew it I slid to the edge of the road and was stuck in the mud. I aired my tires down and thankfully I was able to extricate my vehicle from the predicament.

I thought about continuing to the TH, but not knowing what the rest of the road was like I decided to turn around and come back another day. I drove back to US 60, reinflated my tires, and then decided to drive 4-5 miles north and hike to Rock Springs Butte. After hiking to Rock Springs Butte, on the way back home we stopped off at the Picketpost TH and hiked along Arnett Canyon for a ways.

Rock Springs Butte
(1.6 miles with 745 feet of AEG)
Rock Springs Butte is in the shadow of the Sevenmile Mountains highpoint, and is across US 60 from Jackson Butte. Its elevation is 5,362 feet and it has prominence of 562 feet, so it is a ranked peak.

I turned off of US 60 on FR 339 and drove about 0.4 miles before parking at a pullout that was not far from the base of Rock Springs Butte. I was NE of the summit and it was just a matter of making my way up the steep slopes to the summit. Down low there was some catclaw, shrub live oak, and other brush to weave around. The slopes were a bit steep but the footing was good so the climb was not to bad. There was a weak cliff band below the summit to work around.

The views at the long, narrow summit were great. I found a summit register but initially I did see the benchmark. After enjoying the views for a while, we decided to leave. Before leaving I looked at the summit cairn and decided to pull a page out of the @FLYING_FLIVER playbook by completely dismantling the summit cairn to see if the benchmark was there. I did that but there was nothing but dirt; however, I took my hand and scraped away some dirt and felt something metallic -- lo and behold it was the benchmark! I used some water and a rag to clean it up a bit, took some photos, put the summit register jar on top of it, and rebuilt the cairn over the benchmark and the summit register.

Arnett Canyon
(5.2 miles with 370 feet of AEG)
From the Picketpost TH we hiked in Arnett Canyon for a ways until we stopped next to the creek in one of the riparian areas. We had a snack while enjoying a shady spot along the creek, and then hiked back to the TH. There were some decent wildflowers to see along the way, and it was a nice, easy hike.

Flowers were light-to-moderate in Arnett Canyon (globemallow was the highlight), and flowers were isolated on Rock Springs Butte. It looked like invasive grasses growing along the trail to Arnett Canyon were choking out a lot of the wildflowers.

I immediately knew I wanted to come back and climb picketpost when I drove by on the way to white canyon last weekend, but that's not possible right now (or at least a terrible idea). So, I took a stroll around instead. Busy day on the north side; tons of horse traffic in arnett canyon and a few stragglers still coming through with an aravaipa running event. Only a handful of folks on the rest of the route. I kind of hate these circumnav loops because I end up with 50 photos of the same mountain, but this one does look pretty neat from all sides.

With the late arrival of fall this year, I wanted to hit one more riparian area to catch some colors still holding on. I drove through Superior earlier in the week and decided that Arnett Canyon would be a good choice as I could see the colors along Queen Creek still popping.

I arrived at the Picketpost Trailhead a little before sunrise and started out along the L.O.S.T Trail that goes into the canyon. The sunrise was subtle and the temps were very pleasant.

My goal was to hike to Telegraph Canyon and then head back, but go up to the ridgeline area above the canyon via the LOST trail and hike along the edge of the cliffs for the way back. I had looked at the satellite images and saw a couple of old jeep roads that move along the edges. I figured I would just make my own trail after that.

The colors were definitely still popping in the canyon. Such a late turn this year compared to the previous years. Lack of rain, higher temps, it all plays a part, I guess. There were a couple pools and signs of recent running water, but the creek was essentially dry.

I started hiking up a trail/road that I thought would connect to the LOST trail, but it appears I hiked up an older part of Perlite Road. I took this up and around the mine and then made my way to the viewpoints I saw on the satellite images. The views up top did not disappoint. Looking down at this canyon, it gives you a very different perspective from hiking down in the canyon.

The terrain on the top was fairly easy to navigate and I made my way west, along each cliff precipice. The views below changed as I made it from one to the another. I made it towards the end of the higher cliffs and decided to hike down towards the Boyce Thompson Arboretum to see how that’s looking. The colors were nicer in Arnett Canyon.

I made my way back to the cliffs and found a passage to make it back down to the canyon. I hiked back along the route that meets up with the Picketpost/AZT section and then made it back to the trailhead.

I have always enjoyed hiking in this canyon and now that I know how beautiful it is from above, I will be sure to come back again. A nice leisurely 10 miles in an awesome area. The weather was perfect.

When I last visited the area in 2018, I first hiked along the east rim of Arnett. From that vantage point, I spotted what looked like an old jeep trail up the face of the cliff on the west side of the canyon. When I reached the bottom, I couldn’t find the old jeep trail, or any trail other than the official one along the canyon bottom.

I hit the trail at 8:20 a.m. Though 58℉, it was cloudy and felt chilly, so I wore a hoodie.

Perhaps the best fall color was in a grove just past the large boulders blocking further vehicle access. Just beyond the grove, at the first of many dry creek crossings, was a carsonite post indicating this was officially now “Arnett Canyon Trail” — not just a foot path — and that the AZT was ahead.

Ten minutes later I came to a split in the trail. A engraved wood sign announced “↑ Arnett Cyn. Tr. No. 218 … ↑ Jct. L.O.S.T. Tr. No. 221 … ↑ Picketpost TH 4” miles. I was here to explore, so before I went straight on Trail #218, I first went left to see what was over that way. In 300 yds., the spur trail ends at FR 4, which has another Arnett Canyon trail sign. The signs were all recent additions.

Back on Trail #218, I passed through the first bolted metal tube gate, then by three new gabions. What the gabions were for, I do not know. At the junction of Telegraph, there was another new engraved wood sign. It’s becoming positively civilized down in there!

Though the creek had some shallow pools, I was able to cross dry, then begin the climb. It was steep — 400 ft. in ⅓ mile (23%) — but short. Other than one 30 ft. section, footing was bueno.

I lost the trail about 50 ft. below the edge of the mesa, but by that point it did not matter. The top is rolling, covered in sparse grass, and a scattering of the usual stabby things.

I worked my way counter-clockwise around the mesa’s northeast rim. There were great views of Apache Leap, Superior, its dirt strip airport, the open pit copper mine, Perlite Road, Apache Tears Mine and Boyce Thompson Arboretum. I could even make out the AZ-60 bridge over Queen Creek Canyon. Fall color in Arnett was moderate. My iPhone had 3-bar Verizon LTE reception.

Turning back to the middle of the mesa, I spotted a fairly large cairn. I’d heard there were multiple cairns, and more pink tape, on top of the mesa, but otherwise came up empty-handed. I hiked a ½ mile east, but for some reason turned around before reaching the point overlooking Finger Rock.

To my southwest was a small side canyon of Telegraph. I could have crossed it, but it looked fairly deep, so instead I followed the elevation contour around the top of it. Turns out it was only 125 ft. deep. 😏

150 yds. later, I came upon a second side canyon. It looked more rugged so, again, to save effort I worked the elevation contour line. I was now close to the bottom of Picketpost Mountain’s summit cliffs, in a couple of acres of pink granite, at the top of a third side canyon. Unless you return the way you came, that pink granite marks the best route down.

Descending the third side canyon, from the pink granite to Telegraph, is not at all difficult. It’s a pretty little canyon. There is often a path and, when there isn’t, head for the low point. Footing is never an issue. The only problem is catclaw, but if you are paying attention, you can mostly avoid the grab & stabs. If you look out, there’s nice views of various formations further up Telegraph, along the AZT.

The trail down Telegraph wasn’t always as obvious as the one in Arnett, but it was still far better than The Old Days when a fair amount of bushwhacking was involved. At one point, looking down as I do when walking, I glanced up … and jumped. Yikes! Thought it was a critter. Instead, it was just a badger-shaped log. 😆

Back at Finger Rock, I took a brief break. Afterwards, I booked it back up Arnett Canyon to my car.

Hit the TH around 7:30 am with the original goal of doing Arnett Canyon. Of the two approaches, I prefer the southernmost one. For the first couple of miles, the attraction is the rock formations, as well as views of Picketpost from the north side. About 1.6 miles in, the "pretty section" begins, with trees and flowing water (likely just from the recent rains). There is some fall color, but still a lot of green. This might be a great Christmas hike ....

At the end of Arnett, I decided to continue on and do the Picketpost circumference loop. I saw no one until halfway through Telegraph Canyon, when I came across a solo trail runner, and then began running into a few groups going doing the circumference loop CCW.

The trail through Telegraph Canyon was a little hit and miss, but no worry about getting lost. There is a section of the HAZ route through this section that juts south out of the creekbed before circling back down. I saw no real sign of a taking that jog and just stayed more or less in the creekbed.

Eventually the trail/route connects with a 4x4 road, which the trail follows before peeling off on a trail that connects to the AZ Trail.

When I got to the turnoff for the summit trail, I decided to tack that on as well. Several groups on the trail, but not very many on the summit when I arrived. Temperatures were perfect and visibility was excellent.

After the descent, I circled one more time down the south approach to Arnett, so that I could check out the north approach on the return.

Great day for a hike.

I did this hike almost year ago to the day to see the autumn foliage. This year it was about a week to 10 days prior to prime color but it was still well worth the drive. My sister from Tucson joined me. The parking lot at the TH was completely full but we each shoehorned our cars into spaces that weren't really meant to be. Her friend cancelled at the 11th hour due to covid and @tibber also cancelled to to illness. So our foursome became two. Get well soon Angela and Esther. : rambo :

As a twosome we took our time and did some exploring on a use trail near Finger Rock heading east down Telegraph Canyon. A very pretty area I had not seen before. For all the cars we saw nobody until we passed Finger Rock where we encountered a couple of senior hiking groups doing the Picketpost circumference. Being the same age as old people is weird. :scared:
After that it was only a girl and her dog. Must have been very busy on the summit trail. :-k Near the end we took the L.O.S.T. Loop Trail #219 to see the carved steps and return to the lot.

Lunch at Los Hermanos in Superior after the hike. Good food and pie! Thanks for joining me Michele.

Easy and enjoyable hike this morning. I have had Arnett Canyon on my list, and I was happy to have made it out there. It is also my first foray onto the Legends of Superior trail system, which I also have been interested to start! :) it was a good choice for today because I was hiking with my kids... Who really don't like hiking! 🤔🤣🤣🤣🤣 But whatever, it was a beautiful day, and I wanted to spend time with them. Actual cognizant time where they were not tethered to electronic devices! Mission accomplished!! 😁😊 It wasn't a hard or long trail, so there was no complaining. And really, the trail is beautiful with all the water in the creek (water appeared about 2 miles in from the picketpost trailhead) and all the magnificent cottonwoods!! We also enjoyed the gigantic saguaros and the odd palm trees! I was impressed by how much water was in the creek. Pools, but big ones, and a lot of them.

We went to Telegraph Canyon and the Finger Rock before turning around. I had desired to do this as a 1-way shuttle hike, but I didn't want to mess around with 2 cars today, so out and back it was! I liked the finger rock, but kids (predictably) were unimpressed! 🙄🤣

Not too many people out. Two groups of horses. 1 big group of about 12 to 14 horses, and one smaller group of 4. For hikers, we saw a couple solo hikers, one pair, and a family with young children. All in all, not too many people on the trail. The parking lot was rather full. Probably a bunch of people in picketpost summit or circumference. We took the alternate, non-horse friendly route back to the Trailhead. Holy carved stone steps! Somebody really did some work there. That was also my same thought mid trail in the cobblestone-lined trail sections.

Beautiful weather on a nice trail... Perfect Sunday!

Enjoyed the east end of Arnett this afternoon. While standing at the trail junction of the Telegraph Canyon, we were surprised by a gray fox coming out of brush to join us. She was a surprised as we were. Later a buzz worm in the tall grass surprised me,just to get the heart going more. By sound only, I was only 3-4' from it and made a fast retreat. Took to beating the grass with a 5' stick just to show who was boss. Frogs, tarantula, garter snake, assorted birds filled out our viewing during the short jaunt.

It's been too long since we have hiked Picketpost. Three years. Should be done annually.
A few more spider trails then the last time we hiked this. We got a bit off track a few times per usual.
Nice breeze and temps on the mountain. Great views.
Checked out the Lost trail into Arnett Canyon until we got to the Canary Island date palms.
Fun day. Thanks for driving Kelly. :)

it's been three years :o
last did this with john and @dixieflyer in 2020
got going around 0520 or so

not the most efficient route we've taken
spent a few minutes on the summit checking out the views
perfect weather
good route down for the most part
saw nine people, more than i would have thought
we took the trail into arnett canyon
found water in the creek about a mile and a half in
better to do this part in the spring or fall

Planned on hiking Reavis to check on the Apple blossoms, yet the road to Rogers Trough was blocked off cuz they're burning the forest down during the windy season through the 29th. These notices are easy to find on the HAZ Forum [ photo ] . In retrospect, we might have been able to get in from the east on FS357-Magnum Hewitt Station Rd as the closure is a tiny area before the turn onto FS172 Hewitt Canyon Rd.

We invested 20 seconds researching an alternative. Not on my top hundred favorites list, but an intriguing hike with plenty of geology and desert flora. Effort to reward is better than average in nice weather. The creek flow was better than anticipated, yet easy crossings.

The current/original HAZ route meanders on old alignments. Bruce had an appointment with his beautician and kept shortening the arduous hike on inner options as we went. For the best, I'm not in prime fitness.

Borderline too warm for most. Seemed like pretty nice weather to me. Good to get out.

Extreme if you haven't hiked much in the last couple months but I'll go with light based on photos that I've seen others posting recently.

Well this day did not go as planned.

With forecasted temps in the 70's the plan was to hit up the Supes and check out the apple blossoms at Reavis Ranch.

A mile after turning on to the dirt off of Hewitt Station Road, we encountered barricades and a closed road. Evidently they were doing some prescribed burns through the 29th.

Plan B on the fly, ended up being Picketpost Circumference. It had been almost 10 years since I last did this. This would get us done before the heat hit and there is quite a bit of shade in sections.

My favorite sections of this hike are still the shaded southern and eastern portions. Water was running, birds were singing, butterflies were flutterin' and rocks were rocking. There's some interesting geology all the way around on this loop. We took a well deserved break at the creek after 5 grueling miles with triple digit elevation gain.

Back at the TH, a car just pulled up with a big AZT sticker on the passenger door. Out from the back seat popped a backpacker headed north. We chatted for a bit and he was being dropped off by a trail angel. They didn't have those back in the day when we were doing the AZT.

Good to hike with Joe, Joe the wonder chimp again.

Easy hike along a beautiful canyon at the base of Picketpost Mountain. Anna, Cindy and I met up at 6:45am with Grace, Lorne, Izzy and Amy. Nice and cool, a whole mess of wildflowers and running water made for an enjoyable hike.
