And to finish off our day after Devil's Garden, we went to do the Painted Rim Trail.  As we were pulling in we saw around two dozen corvettes.  At the entrance there was a Cliffrose that yelled, "smell me" so we obliged and were pleasantly surprised at the wonderful fragrance.  I had no idea it smelled that great or I would have stopped much more on the trail in the past.  We took a little tour of the Inn which is really quaint and has some superb views.  It would be a fun place to hang out. We were too late for ice cream though :( .

And then we started our hike of the Painted Desert Rim Trail.  We were walking on the Bidahochi top layer which was deposited by volcanoes between 16 and 5 million years ago.  This layer protects the softer and much older Chinle Formation from 210 million years ago.  And like the Grand Canyon, there is a missing layer (Unconformity) between the two.  We enjoyed reading the interpretive signs so that we could better understand what we were seeing, and in this case, not seeing.

The red of the Chinle layer is most prominent as you look out, mostly to the north.  It looks like it would be fun to hike around and explore down there.  We came upon a corner of Cliffrose TREES. They were full of luscious blooms and it smelled great.  We went to the end where there is another parking area and Tawa Point.  The point is named for Tawa, the Hopi Sun Spirit. According to Hopi beliefs Tawa is the Creator, and it was he who formed the First World out of Tokpella, or Endless Space, as well as its original inhabitants.

Next up:  Pintado Point's Newspaper Rock was a must.  The view of the Newspaper Rock is really only visible through the looking glasses.  I even had trouble zooming into where the rocks were to document the glyphs.  However, they were impressive. From the NPS:
With so many "writers" over so many years, it is impossible to "read" the rockface. There is no linear story.I also liked the interpretive signs that showed us our views which were pretty good, but there was a little haze.
Pintado is the Spanish word for “painted,” which is fitting at this scenic viewpoint.

One more stop, Puerco Pueblo, as long as we're in the area, we parked near the interpretive sign about the New Pangea.  I recently watched the series about the making of the continents so I find that signs and area like this, reinforce what I think I learned.  Puerco Pueblo was a 100 room plus room place very close to the Puerco River that at it's height was home to 200 people.
Before going over to check it out, there is a building filled with wonderful interpretive signs that I wanted to get pictures of.  I'm getting better at understanding this history and geology better and I find these signs help me more with some of what I think I know.  And then there are the petroglyphs with one notable, the solar marker.  For about two weeks around June 21, an interaction of light and shadow passes across the rings of this small, circular design as the sun rises.  To top it all off, the clouds were putting on a magnificent show.

Once again, Kelly was the absolute perfect tour guide and I thank her profusely.   And she wasn't done yet; Day 3 would be just as amAZing.

Interesting pueblo walk.

While out there, I saw a 50 flame from a gas release at the nearby underground LNG storage facility housed in old underground salt chambers accessed by wild cat oil drillers in the 1920s. It was reported to be 7500' below the surface. If true, that is impressive.

If anyone has more information on those, I would love to hear it.

First day of a much anticipated return to Petrified Forest National Park. We hit a few spots before backpacking to our campsite for two nights. We then did an evening hike to Onyx Bridge. Good first day. :)

We arrived at the Petrified Forest National Park around 2:30 and picked up our free backpacking permit. Backpackers are supposed to leave to the Kachina Pont area no later than 4:30. We decided to hit a couple of short hikes up top prior to dropping off the rim.

Blue Mesa Trail
1.1 Miles - 140' AEG
Shows off some of the colors in the park

Puerco Pueblo
.40 miles - 30' AEG
The paved path takes you by a Kiva and some nice Petroglyphs

Painted Desert Rim Trail
1.25 Miles - 100' AEG
Nice overview of the north end of the park

Onyx Bridge to camp
4.0 miles - 175' AEG
After hiking in the required 1 mile, we stashed our Backpacks, grabbed some liquid and made our way over to the Onyx "used to be a" Bridge. It was cool for a first day hike, but there was plenty more cool stuff to come. We made our way back to our packs and found a suitable campsite for a few nights.

Meals, jabbering, beverages, star gazing through the full moon and then an early bed (for me).

Made a stop at Petrified Forest National Park on my way to Colorado.

I hit up the Rainbow Forest Loop first. On returning to the beginning of the loop, I overheard a gentleman talking to a ranger asking if it was legal for him to tote his gun in the park. The ranger informed him it was legal to tote his gun, but if he discharged it he could be in trouble. The gentlemen replied: "But what if there's a mountain lion attacking me?!"

Next I hit up the Long Logs - Agate House loop. This was the longest trail I did at the park totaling a whopping 2.5 miles! The Agate house is interesting; It was built out of Petrified Wood! On the way back the loop takes you through some neat looking badlands. This was probably my favorite trail I did, you essentially get a little sampler of everything you see on the rest of the established trails.

After that, I was off to Crystal Forest. A short loop with a few good views, and Petrified Wood that has a "crystal" looking core.

Next was Blue Mesa Trail, which takes you through some bigger and nicer looking badlands.

I then checked out Puerco Pueblo. The ruins are interesting, but I thought the sun dial which was etched into a rock was pretty cool. The Pueblo people would use it in order to track the changing seasons so they knew when to plant crops. I didn't quite understand exactly how it worked, only that it was etched in the rock at a position where when the sun hit it, a "light shaft" is created that intersects a spiral at 9:00 AM.

The last hike I did was the Painted Desert Rim. The immediate area isn't very interesting, but the views of the wilderness area north of the trail is enticing. Sometime I would like to backpack the Wilderness Area north of the Painted Desert Visitor Center.

My girlfriend and I stayed the weekend in Pine, intending to take our first trip to Fossil Creek this day, but with a thunderstorm in the forecast, and the fact that it was already raining when we got up, we had to change our plans. We wanted to go somewhere we'd never been before, so we decided to check out the Petrified Forest. Random, I know, considering this is a good 2 hr drive from Pine, but I'm really glad we went. I didn't know much about what to expect from this place, but it was awesome! Didn't realize how big this place is and how much there is to see.

We came in from the south entrance. There were a lot of tourists but it didn't seem especially crowded, since it was a Monday. It was mostly clear when we got there, but we could see a big storm coming in from the south, and soon enough started hearing the thunder. We stopped at pretty much all of the major spots along the way through the park, and hiked all the short trails. The storm was getting closer and closer, and it started lightly raining on us on the Crystal Forest Loop.

By the time we got to the Jasper Forest overlook it started pouring on us, and the thunder was crashing right overhead. We had to get back in the car and wait it out for 20 minutes or so. Once the rain slowed down we continued up the road to the Agate Bridge. That was definitely a cool spot. With all the rain there was water flowing and actually a waterfall under the bridge. There was water flowing all over the park actually, which I'm sure was a sharp contrast to how this park normally looks.

We kept going up to Blue Mesa and that was probably my favorite spot of the day. The Blue Mesa Trail was a great, short hike. It was cool being able to actually go down into the little canyon. Like a lunar landscape down there. There were little streams of milky water flowing all over the place. Pretty much no one else down there with us.

Unfortunately we had to rush a bit by the time we got to Puerco Pueblo. It was already after 4pm and we had a 4 hr drive back home to Phoenix ahead of us. We still had time to stop at a couple of the Painted Desert vistas though. Beautiful. I would love to come back here again with more time for hiking. We stopped at the Falcon Cafe in Winslow for dinner on the way home. We'll never stop there again...

PEFO Pilot Rock Adventure 2014 - "Return of the Painted Desert Rendezvous"
[ Return of the Painted Desert Rendezvous ]

Rob del Desierto and I had talked about a PEFO wilderness backpack for some time and agreed that late September would be a great time to target an ascent of the PEFO high point, Pilot Rock :next: [ Pilot Rock Summit ]

As the date approached for the wilderness adventure, some crazy weather starting showing up in the forecast. This served as the primary filter whittling the original 19 committed/interested group of HAZers down to two! Rob and I had exchanged emails indicating both of us were committed no matter what Mother Nature wanted to throw at us - we had plenty of back up plans including;

1. Onyx Bridge :next: [ Onyx Bridge ]
2. Puerco Pueblo and nearby rock art :next: [ Puerco Pueblo ]
3. PEFO Ranger selections from NPS site :next: https://www.nps.gov/pefo/off-the-beaten-path.htm (Devil's Playground?)
4. Rock Art Ranch :next: [ Rock Art Ranch ]
5. Grand Falls :next: [ Grand Falls ]

Rob arrived at my Ahwatukee home mid-afternoon and mid-dust storm we were on our way to Holbrook. We were treated to a great light show along the I-40 between Flagstaff and Holbrook. Once checked into our Holbrook Best Western base camp, we broke out the BBQ to grill up some choice steaks and corn-on-the-cob. We were soon joined by a lost beagle. Toko was her name per the engraved heart dangling from her collar. A phone number was also engraved on the heart. We called the surprised owner who promptly sent her brother over to Room 115 to collect the grateful beagle (grateful for the steak samples that is).

Saturday dawn broke with some surprisingly clear skies and a forecast for heavy showers beginning mid-morning.

We forced down some of the Best Western breakfast buffet (the self-made waffle with fresh fruit gets the only passing marks) while sitting amongst all the French tourists. Loaded up the F-150 and headed to PEFO about 20 miles east along the I-40 from Holbrook. We made a slight detour along the way, checking out the flooded Lithodendron Wash. Having explored this rare sight, we made our way over to the park entrance. I had my NPS annual pass ready, but we were being waved through by the Ranger indicating it was one of the "free entrance fee" days at the National Parks - enjoy!

We pulled up to Painted Desert Inn ready to explore the PEFO Black Forest and Quest for Onyx Bridge, but needed to alter plans. I had a chance to explore some parts of Mary Colter's renovation of the Painted Desert Inn :next: https://www.nps.gov/pefo/planyourvisit/ ... b-2013.pdf and Painted Desert Rim Trail :next: [ Painted Desert Rim Trail ] while Rob took care of business from afar.

We continued our PEFO hiking flexibility by heading over to Puerco Pueblo and exploring the petroglyphs along the west service road heading towards Newspaper Rock.

Our afternoon featured a surprisingly dry and mud-free trek towards Onyx Bridge and some preliminary route finding towards Pilot Rock. Thanks Rob for pointing out the rock art panels and dinosaur fossils along the route.

We wrapped up with a late afternoon BBQ of some brats n beer at the Chinde Point picnic table area :next: https://www.nps.gov/pefo/planyourvisit/ ... _large.pdf before hitting the road back to the PHX area. I think I've got Rob convinced that all Country & Western tunes must contain one of the three main theme items;
1. Girls/Women
2. Alcohol
3. Trucks
Truly visionary Country & Western tunes contain all three main theme items...

Fitbit totals; 15.16 miles and 1060 AEG

Photos to follow (when I get the chance)...

PS. Post hike, we obtained an NPS brochure for Onyx Bridge :next: https://www.nps.gov/pefo/upload/Onyx-Bridge-Hike-2.pdf (includes GPS coordinates for bridge - feeling foolish thwarted again?)

PPS. Rob and I agree that a Spring Redux is mandatory to conquer Pilot Rock and the ever elusive, Onyx Bridge. :)

For the holiday weekend we decided to do an overnight trip to see Meteor Crater and the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest. After seeing Meteor Crater on Friday, we spent the night in Holbrook. The Best Western Inn there, by the way, was incredible. We got the suite, which was not much more than a regular room and it was more like an apartment.

Saturday we woke up and made our way to the Petrified Forest. We did a lot more than just the Blue Mesa Trail, and I've linked all the ones currently on HAZ that we did. We started doing a little bit of the Giant Logs Trail, then did 2 miles on the Long Logs/Agate House trail. We skipped the Long Logs loop and just went out and back to the Agate House ruin. After that, we stopped at the Blue Mesa Trail. I didn't plan on doing that trail, but once we got started down the trail, I just got drawn in. Definitely one of the best sights in the park. We kept booking thru it taking pics. Natasha and I did the whole thing in just over 20 minutes. Radmila and Dmitri only did about half of it, stopping where the loop begins.

Our last stop was at the Puerco Pueblo. That was pretty nice. The petroglyphs are really interesting to see.

Afterwards we stopped at the north end of the park for some final photos and headed back to the desert heat.

Another easy paved trail in the PeFo. One of my favorite petroglyphs is here; a heron holding a frog in its mouth. Although, with a little imagination, the frog looks like a small human.

This was an enjoyable hike on a paved surface to an interesting ruin, with wide-open views of the Painted Desert in the distance. In retrospect, wish I'd spent my brief time in the park hiking Blue Mesa, or one of the other areas where you can get close in amongst the desert formations.
