Been trying to take advantage of the cooler days as I can and realized I needed to aim for a hike midweek with the end of week forecast calling for wind and rain. Also wanted to get out for something slightly shorter than usual to evaluate the fit of a pack before I committed to a super long day with new gear. Wound up with a very late start to the day thanks to insomnia and dithering on where to drive to since I couldn't muster the enthusiasm for a wander at any of the closer locales.

Been meaning to hit the Wedding Cake and figured maybe with a near midday start I'd be able to catch a spot at the parking lot thinking most people would have opted to hike in the morning and would be clearing out....I was wrong. Arrived to a couple other cars queued for a parking spot. Luckily, a large-ish group came off the trail relatively quickly and I was able to park after 10-15 min of waiting. I guess the lesson here is that I should either get moving earlier or if I have the daylight, to park at the Lost Goldmine TH instead.

Before heading out, I added Turks Head to my route, and figured I'd run up to see the petroglyphs if I had time - initially, I was going to hit the petroglyphs first, but the trail was overrun so I headed out Lost Goldmine towards my two targeted peaks instead. I passed a number of folk headed back towards the trailhead while I was outbound, with one guy eliciting a smile by yielding the trail and calling me "miss" -- it's nice to know that I can still garner a "miss" when some people think I'm 400

The Lost Goldmine trail is fast traveling with fantastic views of the Superstitions and lots of very happy saguaro, cholla and other low desert plants. Before long, I hit the junction (marked with rocks placed on the ground in the shape of a cross) to head towards Wedding Cake Hill. I wasn't paying attention and cruised right past the cairn and location to cross the fenceline (oops), realizing my mistake as I contoured around the far side of my target and found myself looking at Turks Head...a quick check confirmed my error, so I dashed back to climb to the summit. The route is well trodden and easily followed all the way up. Took some time to enjoy the solitude and the stunning views from the top while being buzzed by a pair of swifts. While I was on my way up, I received a suggestion from @00blackout that I check out Chuparosa Canyon - I was able to make out the use path from where I was perched and figured I might give it a go in lieu of heading up to look at the petroglyphs if I had the daylight to work with at the end of my planned hike.

After my brief break, I headed back down and over to Turks Head. The route up Turks Head is also easy to follow, though is braided in places - I was surprised to find another hiker headed down near the summit as I was on my way up. I had the top to myself, and after snapping a few photos that don't do the views justice, I headed back down and rejoined the Lost Goldmine trail.

While I had a screencap of the route for Chuparosa Canyon, I didn't have it downloaded and ran into a few snafus...eventually got to where I needed to be, but after popping over the barbed wire fence, I found myself picking a route amongst cattle paths in and around the drainage and I knew I was going to run out of daylight - so rather than continuing onward, I decided to call it a day and headed back to my car. Looks like I have a reason to return, preferably after we get a bit of rain!

Happy to say that the new pack seems to fit and carry well, though I need to figure out where to shove my phone for easy access since I can't easily reach the side pocket while the pack is on. Also realized while on the off camber slickrock sections that I had managed to forget to don my ankle brace in my haste to leave the house...glad to also realize that my days with required bracing might be coming to a close! It was a great day to be outside, and the views in this area of the superstitions are extra lovely with all the mature desert flora.

Wildlife: various birds and a variety of lizards.

Started from the Hiero TH to keep it shorter. On my way in I saw they were setting up for the marathon that I forgot about. Fortunately Kings Ranch Road was still open. At the trailhead I saw Ray Huston and some of his friends getting an early start up the petroglyphs. After talking with him for a bit, I took off.

the lower trail is fainter in places and braided, there are a few different routes you can take. Hopefully someone will spray this soon so it's easier to follow :rollH: . Around halfway up, the trail gets clearer and easier to follow. I got to the top and made may over to the actual peak, which has a little bit of exposure to try to get to. Very nice views up there. While I was up there I looked over at the Wedding Cake and there were 2 or 3 hikers over there at the summit. Also heard a couple packs of coyotes howling at each other while I was up there.

Made my way down and hiked the dirt road down to the Old Horse Trail and then made a loop back to the parking lot. I had thought that the marathon would have reduced the late morning hordes, but it was the worst I've seen it. Then on the way out the traffic to 60 and on 60 was slow until you got past the barracades that they were just taking down.

Saw only one hiker on my way down from Turks Head until I got to the trailhead, then everyone was on their way to the glyphs. Saw a coyote the last mile before the parking lot. Weather stayed cool, light clouds made it not too sunny.

I’d never done this section of the lost goldmine trail, figuring that it wouldn’t be that interesting. I was pleasantly surprised, particularly after adding on an ascent of both the “Birthday Cake” and Turks Head on the western end, and Shaka Cave and Waterfall on the eastern end.

Not much traffic on the trails. I just missed seeing a gila monster, but saw the photos of it taken by a couple of hikers who were a little ahead of me on the trail.

There are fairly well cairned routes up Bday and Turks, though I didn’t find the latter until bushwhacking halfway up.

Shaka Cave was pretty cool. Looked like a couple of grinding holes at the entrance.

I need to go back to the waterfall when it’s running.

Starting to get warm out there.

This was my first time hiking with ishamod since December, and we were looking for something relatively short today because he needed to be done by mid-afternoon. The Superstition side canyons work well in these situations, and neither of us had been to Turk's Backyard (Ermahgerd Canyon), so we picked that one.

We started from Hieroglyphic Trailhead just after sunrise and followed Lost Goldmine toward Old Turk's Head. The desert is very green right now, and the wildflowers are just starting to bloom. I'd only approached Old Turk's Head from the east side previously, which has no trail and gets brushy in places, so it was a surprise to find a well-worn use trail all the way up from the west/southwest.

We took a short break at the top and before starting down toward Turk's Backyard. There are some steep/loose areas on the northeast side that slowed things down a little, but it flattened out pretty quickly, and we eventually picked up a cairned route leading into the canyon that seems to get quite a bit of use--there was a cleared path through the brush that made things very easy.

The canyon wasn't as deep as I expected, and it didn't take long to reach the dryfall/rappelling area. From there, we could see the ladder and caves up above us to the right, where the canyon curves to the east. On our way up to the base of the ladder, we passed a lot of rusty scraps of metal that made us wonder if this was once an old mine site. Other than missing a rung near the bottom, the ladder was in good shape and felt sturdy...it reminded me of a less sketchy, more modern version of the rickety wooden ladder in Long Canyon in Sedona...we convinced a friend to climb that one a few years ago [ youtube video ] , so with a much stronger ladder here, climbing this one was a no-brainer :).

We went up to the ledge and took a closer look in the cave...there was more to see here than in Long Canyon. This one definitely looked like the remnants of a mining operation--there was a bolt in the rock and some metal equipment and thick pieces of rope inside the cave, and the opening appeared to go back 15+ feet and narrowed into a mine shaft. I'd be interested to know was mined there...another guano cave like Crucifix Canyon?

After exploring, we climbed back down, took a short lunch break, then followed the cairns back to Turk's Head and went up. There was one other person at the top who left just before we got there, then we returned on Lost Goldmine among the crowds of people. We saw multiple groups starting up/returning on the use trail toward Old Turks Head, so it seems like that one has gained popularity recently. Back near the trailhead, a helicopter flew over a few times and hovered near Hieroglyphic Spring for a few minutes before flying away.

This was a short, easy day--and shorter than expected--some of the similar routes I'd looked at were a few miles longer, but I think their GPSs added a bunch of distance when the signal got lost in Turk's Backyard. I had to do some major cleanup in Route Editor to get my track closer to an accurate distance/AEG. Regardless, it was fun to explore another one of the Superstition side canyons and great catching up with ishamod again. The forecast for today said strong winds, but we never had more than a light breeze, and the temperature was perfect.

With the temps still lingering in the broiler oven level, I needed a quick one with a little elevation. Turks Head is always a fun one. I have come in from the Carney side and from Hieroglyphics TH in the past, I opted for the shorter Hierglyphics route.

A good number of people were already there when I arrived about 645am. With a few exceptions, all of those hikers went up the Hieroglyphics Trail. I hung a right and started down the Lost Goldmine. I really like this trail. It's mostly flat and doesn't offer many challenges, but the scenery is hard to beat. The mountain looks so different as you move along the edge.

I made good time to the turn off towards the Turks Head trail. It's just the old road than you follow up. The trail is easy to follow these days going up. I remember the first couple times on this one, it was a route finding challenge. Lots of cliffing out the first time hiking up there. Now, the trail is worn pretty clear and the slickrock sections have decent cairns in place all the way to the top.

The weather was nice at the start, a nice but short-lived coolness at the start. The shade of the mountain made the hike up much nicer than getting baked by the sun going up. Hiking back, the heat of the day was getting to the "man, it's hot!" range.

The views from Turks Head is the draw. And, the interesting formations along the way up. The balanced rock near the bottom of the peak is always a stop I make. And, the window/arch at the very top is also a cool geological experience.

I will be happy when the weather turns and I would also love to see some RAIN out here.

Decided to do a short hike that was easy to get to. This is a rather pleasant hike with nice views at the end. Unfortunately, there were gale force winds that morning, so not quite as pleasant.

We decided to to this trail as a there-and-back; starting from the Hieroglyphics Trailhead just to the peak and back to the trailhead for a 5.9 mile round trip. Weather was perfect along the Lost Goldmine Trail #60. The trail leading to the peak was pretty straight forward. It appears there are a few different ways to the peak, just follow the cairns, and one of the cairn trails will get you there.

Views of the south, north, and west are fantastic from the peak. This peak is well worth the effort.

We were looking for something a little shorter and easier today with @TBoneKathy recovering from a minor leg injury. We planned to start with a short hike to Shaka Cave and Carney Springs Waterfall so she could test the leg, and if it was feeling good, we'd tack on some other destinations to extend the hike. We started from Lost Goldmine East Trailhead around sunrise and were the only vehicle in the parking lot when we hit the trail. It was a little breezy, but already comfortable at ~60°.

Someone has painted white arrows on a lot of the rocks along the trail to the Wave Cave, some with "WC" added next to the arrows...especially pointless along such an obvious trail, even more so when all someone has to do to find the Wave Cave is follow the line of people. We veered right toward Carney Springs and took the social trail over to Shaka Cave. I noticed a few small pottery sherds just outside the cave when we arrived, and a few more, including a thicker piece, set in a recession in the rock wall above the grinding holes near the entrance. This cave is unique in that it's found in a standalone outcropping of rocks rather than in a canyon wall like so many others. It's a good size natural shelter and easily accessible, so it's not hard to imagine why it was an appealing habitation spot.

From there, we continued over to Carney Springs Waterfall, knowing it wouldn't be flowing today. Even dry, I was glad we made the short hike over there to check out it out...I'd noticed that spot from Carney Springs Trail over the years but didn't realize there was a social trail leading over there, and it's worthy of a return after it's rained.

TboneKathy was feeling pretty good, so we decided to extend the day. We considered hiking up to Robber's Roost and looping back on the cave route, but we decided to head over to Turk's Head instead. We've both hiked the Robber's Roost loop a few times, and we'd already seen 5-10 groups going up Carney Springs Trail and didn't want to deal with crowds at Robber's Roost. To be fair, some of the groups were probably lost Wave Cave hikers who weren't planning on going to Robber's Roost...

There were two people at Shaka Cave when we passed it on the way back, and the crowds were really starting to pour in as we got back on the Wave Cave route. Just as we passed the barbed wire fence and started west on Lost Goldmine, a group of lost hikers asked how to get to the Wave Cave. Apparently the giant opening visible in the canyon wall and white arrows every 15 feet still aren't obvious enough...

We hiked around to the west side of Turk's Head and started the climb. I hadn't seen anyone on the way up, but just as I approached the top and got a good look at the balanced rock, I heard voices and was disappointed to see a group of five at the summit. Fortunately, they were just starting down, so I ended up having the peak to myself for the few minutes I spent at the top. [ youtube video ] I didn't see a summit register up there, but recent triplogs show one up there, so I must have missed it. On the way down, another group of three was on their way up. At least they didn't ask for Wave Cave directions...

Since we were so close to Old Turk's Head, I wanted to head over there before we hiked out. @TBoneKathy waited below while I hiked around the east side. It wasn't a bad bushwhack...a little steep in places, but it was easy to avoid the worst of the brush, and I didn't encounter much catclaw or many thorns. I approached the peak from the north, which provided a fairly straightforward path to the top without much loose rock. I found the flatter/wider summit more enjoyable than Turk's Head...and not just because there were no people around this time :). [ youtube video ]

I headed back down, and it was a flat, easy hike back to Lost Goldmine Trailhead. It was a beautiful day, and this was the first hike of the year where the temperature topped 80°. It was nice to see four new destinations in the Superstitions despite all the people out on the trails today...but that's to be expected on these easier hikes around Peralta.

Got off work early yesterday and decided to get out in the wilderness, so I headed out to the Hieroglyphic TH. Hopped on the Lost Goldmine Trail (which surprisingly I've never been on before) and made my way over to Turk's Head. Found cairns heading up which I thought was the trail. Unfortunately this route was full of rock climbing and loose scree. Made it about halfway up before turning around, deciding to live another day  . A bit warm but still a nice walk in the wilderness. I'll make another attempt at some point heading up the "official" HAZ route.

Exercise sunset hike. Left the camera and the pack at home.

A few cars in the Hieroglyphics TH lot, but I saw no other humans except a few powered paragliders flying over when I was at the base

I didn’t make the top, but turned around when the sun went down. The path up is cairned pretty well now. The last time up, I did not see many.

A couple hours of hiking with a little “up”. Just what I needed.

I've seen a few triplogs about Turks Head this year, so I added it to my to do list. I didn't realize there was another one nearby, Old Turks Head, until I started planning the hike. I drew up plans to hike both together. @wallyfrack recently hiked Peak 2777 so I asked him for some guidance on his route to the top. I used the official route for Peak 2822.

I started from the Hieroglyphic TH and took the Lost Goldmine Trail to a spur trail, which takes you straight to the peak 2777 summit. I didn't find the going as easy as Wally did, but he's at or near the top of the HAZ food chain - I'm not  . The trail was easy to follow though and I was soon up top enjoying the views.

On my way back down, I took the mountain bike trail, also mentioned in Wally's triplog, east towards Peak 2822. I wouldn't ride a mountain bike on that trail, but I'm sure the more adventurous bikers find it exhilarating, just as I did using only my legs. I must have missed a turn on the bike trail because I lost it near the end. No matter, I was close enough to the bottom that I just made my way down to the road below and headed over to Turks Heads.

I used the official route going up to the summit. I found it odd that there were no cairns down low so I just stayed with the route I loaded on Route Scout. I had to continually verify that I was on the correct track because the route isn't obvious. After a few hundred yards, cairns appeared and the route was easy to follow the rest of the way. On the way down, I followed the cairned route to the bottom. Shorter route, much easier to follow. At the cairn at the bottom of the route, there are two use paths. The official route goes left. Take the one to the right instead.

On top of peak 2822, I signed the bottom of the last page of the summit register. If anyone is going up soon, please bring a new one. And a pencil sharpener. I took a break just below the summit for a snack and some water, then headed back down and returned to the Hieroglyphic TH.

Just a few cars in the lot when I started at 8:25. Quite a few more when I finished, but by no means busy. I passed two couples on the trail, one on the way out and the other on the way back. The sky was hazy as I drove to the TH, but clear near the mountain. There was a flag whipping breeze as I drove down Kings Ranch Rd. It was windy at both summits, but the weather was gorgeous otherwise.

Great hike. I would definitely do this again.

Decided to head up to Turks Head today on this brisk, 47° blustery morning, even decided to wear gloves. Figured this would be a good hike today as Lost Goldmine trail is south facing and shadeless so a winter like day was perfect. Did I mention it was windy, was surprised by the strength of some of the gusts. The cairned route up Turks Head favors the north side and with the canyon between it and the south face of Superstition Mountain it created a wind tunnel effect. First I was concerned about keeping a hat on then I became concerned about staying upright :scared: .Needless to say I didn’t stand up on the top. Noticed the ammo can I left earlier this year at the summit was still there, between wind gusts did a little cairn restoration. Added a little extra by hiking Lost Goldmine a bit further east to the rock formation with the bedrock mortars before returning.Only saw 6 others on Lost Goldmine and as usual no one else on Turks Head. Disappointingly no wildlife or cattle out, a couple of ATV’s came up the Jeep road at the summit base.

I hiked with the rock rolling tortoise from southern Mesa Denny Skynyrd. There was some light rain on the way to the trailhead but it stopped before the hike. I used hikerdw's GPS track for the route up Turks Head. The route is easy to follow on the way down but stray cairns and side routes lured us away on the hike up. The views from Turks Head are nice and we scoped out a possible route to the cave in the cliffs below the ridgeline. We could see some smoke from the fire in West Boulder Canyon but not a lot. The temps weren't bad but the humidity was high so I was soaked by the end. Denny gave a hiker some water for his dog (which looked thirsty) as we got close to the parking lot. Nice play Denny and thanks for hiking.

I met Wally at the Hieroglyphics trailhead around 530. Temps weren’t too bad but the humidity was no bueno. We hadn’t been on Turks before. The off trail had a lot less scratchy stuff then when we did the hike to “Wally’s hammer” a couple weeks ago. You could see the hammer from up top too and it looked so small. The climb had pretty good footing but the big rock face might be a little slippery when wet. Wally took us through the secret passage. Go left and the summit is right there. Go right and there is no bottom. Great views! We did see a little smoke that looked to be on the northeast side of the ridgeline. On the way back Wally pointed out lots of other stuff we could check out at another time. 😳😁 One hill before we finished we saw a guy with a thirsty dog and tossed him a bottle of cold water. 😁 Another nice hike in the Supes and NO bloodshed 😱. Thanks Wally, like Haz, you rock!
