It cost a total of $17 to obtain 100% Progress of the San Tan Mtn Reg Park - Trails
My synopsis is they aren't worth much more than that. It's also lame that climbing isn't allowed at Owl's Head anymore.

First race of the year! Plan was to keep up my fitness level from the Prescott marathon, but then I got the RSV last October, so... yeah, I'm just happy that I finished.

Race start was at 7:15am (the full 50k route runners started at 7am) with about 90-100 others. Lots of good vibes at this tiny park in the dark morning. Kept a challenging 11:30 pace for the first 8 miles, which followed the San Tan trail south from Phillips all the way to Dynamite. The climb up Goldmine was absolutely punishing. Was able to get back into running mode after the climb, finishing the first loop (17K) in good form, but the second loop (9K, Hedgehog -> San Tan -> Goldmine) hurt and I walked multiple sections. Completed the race at the same time as the Kids Run was going, and my sweaty stumble across the line was deservedly overshadowed by them speedy lil' peeps.

This was my first Aravaipa race, or any type of trail race, and it was a lot of fun. Depending on how the next few (more boring) road races go this spring, I may end up sticking to the Desert Runner races in the future.

Headed out shortly after noon and really lucked out, with a nearby stormcloud blocking most of the sun during the outing. First 5 miles was textbook, took San Tan all the way down to Malpais south start, clocked a steady 12' pace and played leapfrog with a biker. Hit the wall while climbing out of the wash, later found out that my heart was between 170-180 for that first hour with the darn heat & humidity combo. Struggle bus from this point on, alternated between walking and running to the end, leg cramps were visibly twitching :sk: Was able to (very slowly) jog from the top of Hedgehog to the parking lot, just in time to drive to kid's school and 30s after they were released.

Trails were in great shape, as usual, no visible washout damage or anything.

Bike / run / bike. Philips TH was very empty when I arrived at 5pm, only 2 cars in the lot. Took Goldmine up to San Tan, then followed San Tan behind the hill in the middle of the park to Hedgehog to loop back. I like running back there, minimal city noise filters back. Only saw one biker along San Tan trail... until I finished Hedgehog, then there were... a hundred bikers? A huge group, lots of kids, had to be an after-school program or club. They were all careful to avoid my sweat-drenched trudge. Trails in good shape, only noticed additional loose sand from recent weather. While it was nice to get off the pavement for the weekly training runs, the humidity & sun bouncing off the hill along San Tan was tough to get through. Oh, and there's a lot of activity along Phillips road, cleared desert and a staging area for trees & cacti planting, likely for one of the many housing projects down here.

Bike -> Run -> Bike. Wanted to do this to kick-off a long weekend of varied activities. Legs have been feeling "off" for a few weeks but this still felt good, especially in the cool morning air. Not many people out on a weekday morning. Did Goldmine -> San Tan -> Moonlight -> Stargazer -> San Tan, Stargazer was a nice add-on to an otherwise short and basic loop.

Trail running: 4.4 miles, 48 mins

Bike -> Run -> Bike. Forgot to do these during the month of January and, combined with some pre-outing HIIT, I was riding the struggle bus. Bike in was tough, lots of walking breaks, some cramping on the last mile, and bike out was a lot of coasting. Need to get better at accepting that some runs are fast and some are slow. Anyways, lots of other casual hikers out enjoying the late morning sun. Did Moonlight -> San Tan -> Littleleaf, just to change things up and keep mileage low.

Bike from home -> park: 4.2 miles, 23 mins
Trail running: 3.9 miles, 45 mins

Bike -> Run -> Bike. First time post-eye-surgery, and with the afternoon sprinkles and rainbows it was absolutely amazing to enjoy the outdoors without annoying spectacles. Trails were fine, a few damp sections, no mud. Took San Tan (had to pass by a dozen horses chewing up the trail), then cut over via Hedgehog to the back half of San Tan (which is always a good time), then came back on Moonlight. Really enjoyed this route, might be a solid repeat.

Breeze made the start chilly, from a parking lot only partially filled. Quickly warm up though on the trek up to the Goldmine saddle. First time seeing wildlife here as 4 coyotes crossed the trail in front of me on San Tan , too slow with taking a picture, they were making a big clamor in the nearby wash. For the entire hike until reaching the Dynamite trail saw more horses and riders than bikeriders. Took a look at another way to access rock peak instead of from San Tan Trail for future ideas Anticipating seeing wildflowers along here in a month with the rain and greenery present.

This is a nice park for getting some exercise. Perfect temp ,51°,at the start for the climb up Goldmine , decided to hop up on the summit this time too. Met few others on the trail toward the visitor center but once there ,outside the center a large group was forming up , managed to skirt by only to come across another large group on San Tan, had a Moses moment as the group parted to let me through. Decided to break out my old MP3 player for the last couple of miles. Recently read that wired earbuds are making a comeback,so I’m sure I looked cool with the tangled wires dangling from my neck  Listening to Traffics John Barleycorn Must Die reminded me to have a single malt once back home :D . Lots of construction on Ellsworth and the alternate Ironwood makes for slow travel to Queen Creek.

Bike -> Jog -> Bike. Today I wanted to start from the southern Rock Peak TH and check out the Malpais loop, which would "finish" all the trails in the park for me, didn't estimate the increased bike distance from home or trail mileage lol. Bike was tough, took Gary & Judd, felt like it was steady uphill the whole way. Rock Peak Wash is 95% loose sandy wash, which was "fun" to jog in. Turned on San Tan Trail to the southern end of Malpais, then followed that trail clockwise. I liked Malpais, good mix of sandy wash and packed trails, was able to keep moving with only a few walking breaks through sand. Shaded wash felt good, this will be a haven during the warmer months. Was passed by two runners along this section. Took San Tan back down to Rock Peak to close out the loop, lots of bike traffic along San Tan, at least 15 within a mile. Rock Peak Wash trail and trailhead were empty on the way out. Took Brenner Pass back home, wasn't as steep as I feared, made for a nice change of views. Was surprised at the distances covered when I got home, didn't feel like that much.

Bike from home -> park: 7.8 miles, 37 mins
Trail running: 7.8 miles, 1:35 hrs

Bike -> Run -> Bike. New trails, followed San Tan all the way around to Moonlight. San Tan is a fun singletrack once you get past the Hedgehog junction and the views south of the saddle are a nice change. Gets a little rolly by Rock Peak, 6-8' dips that were a bit much. Legs were also very sore this week from changing up workout routine, took several miles before the groove hit. Saw a handful of bikers / hikers, mostly near the TH. Fun times.

Again, but different trails. Took some dirt paths on the ride there, I enjoy running them but on a hybrid bike... I'll stick to the roads next time. Chilly morning, long sleeve shirt was appreciated, especially on the ride in. Jogged Goldmine -> San Tan -> Hedgehog -> San Tan, first time on San Tan Trail behind that lil' hill, it was nice back there. Trail gets narrow and bucks up and down a lot, making for fun biking and running. Hedgehog was also a nice change. Enjoyed the change of scenario but also missed the burn of steep uphill. A few people on the trail, including one festive trail runner who was absolutely rockin' it. Zoom-zoomed on the ride home.
