This is a great hike ... not for the trail itself but the isolation.

This is the busy time of the year for this hike and we still saw MORE deer than people. We camped just above the apple orchard on the creek.

We found water at the spring just off the ranch house site.

If we had been a week earlier we would have had MORE apples. The orchard was ripe for the picking and the bear have been all over the area eating and getting rid of apples.

We took the dog. He is a 90 pound shepherd ... he made it just fine. He was tired and his pads were a little sore.

The trail is in good shape. The flies and other insects are thick in places. Still a few snow patches on the trail. It was no big deal, I just thought it was neat to still see that much snow up there.

Up in about 2 hrs 30 mins down in 2 hrs 10. Warm and calm on the summit.

It was our anniversary, so we thought this was a good way to celebrate.

The trail is still 95% snow covered. Knee deep in places. There was a massive avalanche in February that left an impressive/depressing amount of destruction. We hiked up the Abineau until the turn to go to Bear Jaw . . . to much snow, so we ran back down the Abineau. If so inspired, you could take your snowboard and get some decent sliding in before the end of the snow season.

This was our first time anywhere near Humphreys. What a great hike to the top. It feels like a decent accomplishment when you are finished.

This is a great trail and the peak is fun because of the fire tower and the workers on watch. The scenery was awesome. The wind made it a bit nippy in the morning.

We went up the steep side and down the other. This is a tremendous hike and more challenging than we had assumed, due to the altitude. This should be on everyone's must do list.

Did the death march from Echo across the ridge down the Cholla and back to Echo. It was hot. Saw some great chuckwallas today. Took plenty of breaks for shade and water.

Darn near broke an ankle coming down today. I've been waiting for about 4 years for that to happen.

Started at Echo, went over the entire ridge and ended back at Echo. Saw two rattlesnakes. Warm but not overbearingly hot.

Did the trip to the top ----TWICE-----. Part of some of our higher altitude training for our upcoming Sierra adventure. This is a nice trail with some great scenery. The ending is a little anti-climatic, but the views are great nonetheless. We did see four falcons, which was cool. Next time we'll take our packs.

Just did it from the Tonto crossing to the rim. Trail was used heavily and is in a little less than perfect condition right now.

6 days of fun in the Canyon.

Day 1- Down the Grandview to Horseshoe Mesa. Played in the caves for a couple of hours. Hiked down to Cottonwood. Set up camp. Scrambled up about a mile to the base of the red wall. Came back to camp. Went to sleep.

Day 2- Explored Cottonwood Canyon. Made it all the way to the Colorado! Extreme trail. Fun route finding. Some vert climbing involved. Two huge pour overs required a re-route. Hiked back out to Cottonwood/Tonto crossing. Hiked the Tonto over to Grapevine. Set up camp. Went to sleep.

Day 3- Explored Grapevine Canyon. Much more scenic than Cottonwood. Very steep pour overs to go around. Got in far enough to hear the Colorado, but the spill over was probably 75 feet, with no route around without gear. Hiked back out to Tonto and hiked over to Boulder Canyon. Set up camp. Went to sleep.

Day 4- The two canyon day. Left Boulder Canyon. Hiked over to explore Lonetree Canyon. Made it a good ways down, but this canyon is steep. Beautiful scenery. Hiked back to Tonto. Went over to Cremation on the Tonto. Explored the center arm of Cremation. Awesome open canyon with great formations and steep ravines. Camped in a secluded slot south of the Tonto in middle arm of Cremation.

Day 5- Short hike over to the west arm of Cremation. Stashed the packs and literally RAN down the Kaibab to Phantom. It was beer time. We took a dip at the beach. It was 94 degrees. Helped actor Rick Schroder's father-in-law by bringing him some water up around the tip off. Rick had asked for our assistance as we were leaving Phantom, so we abliged.

Day 6- Got up early and did the death march up the Kaibab, but only from Cremation and not from Phantom. Made it out in about 2.5 hours (a new personal best for that section of trail).

The water was good at Cottonwood, Grapevine and Lonetree. Boulder had a little running water and Cremation had just some crappy pools.

Camelback Ridge Over and Back

The wife and I strapped on a 50 and 30 pound pack respectively and left the cul de sac down from Camelback at 7:45.

We hiked up the echo side, stopped for a granola bar and headed down the Cholla. We arrived at the bottom of the Cholla, adjusted the packs and headed back up. The Cholla side is so much fun and more challenging than I remembered. Could have been the pack. The trail is well marked and easy to find.

We ate lunch on the summit with the 900 or so people up there. Took a few obligatory "what are you training for?" questions, got a picture of a lizard and 4 Peaks to the east.

We headed back down the Echo side and back to the car in under 4 hours.

It was pretty cool and totally doable, even with the packs.

There were several places where we had to wait for people to jam themselves through some of the tougher sections. Please be respectful on the trail, no matter how assinine some of the people can be.

The wife and I did this cool trail as a warm-up for a Grand Canyon adventure. The route finding on the Terrapin/Bluff springs is fun and adds adventure to an already great hike.

The trail afforded us some excellent views of Weaver's that we hadn't yet seen. We've been to the top, but its just as nice to see the formation from the ground, especially on the less traveled east side.

We wanted to test out some of our new backpacking gear, so we brought enough to simulate our pending week-long adventure to the GC.

We were forced into camp by an afternoon thunderstorm on Saturday.
We camped just east of the terrapin trail/dutchman trail intersection. After the rain, we went out and explored the area below the canyon walls and did some bouldering on some ancient lichen-covered rocks the size of houses.

I took the time to rebuild some of the carins along the Terrapin which were necessary in picking the correct "trail". In places, the less traveled areas are loose. It appeared as though someone had been grooming some of the growth in areas, but other portions are so thick with cover it feels like you are in the jungle rather than the desert. As of early April, there were more than enough places to get reasonable water, given the right filtration equipment.

I will do this hike again, probably in the fall and probably as a long day hike.

Good stuff.
