Took a trip to upper Woods canyon to explore the area for a future thru-hike of the canyon. This is a surprising canyon that I never knew existed! Without a high clearance vehicle we were unable to take FR-80 to its terminus, so we parked at exit 315 and began hiking along the dirt road. We saw lots of cool spider webs along the way and a lot of animal tracks. After approximately 2 miles we came to a barbed wire fence running north to south in the middle of a clearing in the forest where a large tree intersected the fence near the road. From this point we began walking northwest for about 5 to 10 minutes across the meadows and forest. We soon came upon the specacular Woods Canyon. The decent into the canyon is extreme! This was some of the steepest terrain I have ever decended. We followed game trails and our own intuition to reach the bottom sooner than we thought. Once at the bottom we were now in another world. Towering pines and green vines stretched along both sides of the boulder strewn creek bed. This was one wild looking place! These were also some of the largest boulders I have ever seen in a creek. There was no running water this time of year so we began to hike down stream. We only ended up hiking about a half a mile in the creek before calling it a night since it was getting dark. We camped next to a large pool filled with stagnant water and were paranoid most of the night since we heard there may be bears in the area (from Canyoneering Arizona book). We hiked out the next morning and upon reaching the top of the steep canyon wall we saw several large elk bounding away from us through the forest! If you plan to do this hike, drive all the way in along FR-80 and bring some topo maps unlike what we did! I can't wait to get back in this canyon and check out the mandatory swims, towering walls and Indian ruins that lie below where we hiked. We might even encounter a bear!

This was my first trip to Aravaipa Canyon. I called the Safford Field Office a week ago and paid for six permits. We set out from Tempe at 5:15am and set out from the West trailhead at 8am. We planned to just hike around and explore for about half the day since this was our Spring Break. We ended up hiking a ways past Horse Camp Canyon before turning around. Although I never visited Aravaipa before the last major flood, the damage is unbelievable! Huge trees were toppled over and piled up in huge dams all across the lower parts of the canyon. It would be quite a sight to come back to see this in comparison to a year or two ago. We had a lot of fun hiking through the water and messing around. Don't be stupid like me and leave your good trail shoes at home! I ended up hiking the whole way in a pair of Injinji toe socks and some Chaco sandals!

I just finished this hike this evening. This is probably one of the sweetest hikes I have been on in Arizona. Yes it is difficult, yes it is rugged and yes there are no trails. I did the hike with one of my friends. We parked a car at Gisela and then drove up to the Hellsgate trailhead in Little Green Valley east of Payson. We began our trek on Tuesday at 2:20pm and hiked rather slowly along the Hellsgate trail until it dumped us onto Tonto creek. There are a bunch of hills to climb through the first part of the hike and a lot of really neat views. You will see a large stagnant water hole on the left about 4 or so miles into the hike that lets you know you are almost to the creek. We dropped into the creek at 4:50pm, so it took us 2 hours and 30 minutes for the first section. We then took to the creek, hiking, rock hopping, wading and swimming for the next few hours. It was very cold and windy, but still a lot of fun. Darkness fell on us about 8:00pm and we continued on for another hour with the use of our headlamps. This had to be the coolest experience I have ever had. We swam easily a 100 yard stretch of the canyon with vertical granite walls on both sides of us in pitch black with nothin but our headlamps and stars overhead. The air temperature had to be in the fifties and the water temperature probably in the sixties. It was cold but the experience was out of this world. We found a campsite soon after on a sandy beach that was infested with spiders and some scorpions. We slept there after eating and woke up to the sunrise. We waited until the sun was upon us at 8:00am to begin our hike again. We had covered approximately 4 miles of the creek the night before so we knew we had to move quick to make it out of the canyon this day. We began to move quickly and reached a few more swims early on in the morning. As the day heated up the water was welcomed to relieve us from the heat. There were many swims at least 100 or more yards long and all very scenic. Many of the pools may be avoided to speed up your hiking time. We ended up making it out of the canyon by 5:00pm that evening. The entire trip took us roughly 26 hours and 30 minutes to cover the 17 miles of canyon and approximately 5 mile hike from Hellsgate trailhead. This left my knees very sore and hurting as well as tons of scraps on my legs from brush and branches. I will probably be doing this hike again due to its immense seclusion and beauty. We were able to travel so fast due to our lightweight packs which we wore on our backs the entire trip, even through the swims. We made sure to put all of our dry items into waterproof bags.

I rode my bike up to the trailhead from Tempe. This was a good hike. There are some nice spots to run and also some nice rock scrambles. It would be awesome to do the cholla and echo canyon trails back to back all the way across Camelback. Anyone down for a challenge?

Went out with my scout troop on this hike. We started from the trailhead and hiked out approx. 4.5 miles. The first mile or so is pretty flat as you hike through a large canyon. It opens up into a large flat area and there is an old house on the left that has a bunch of cactus growing on the roof. Once you pass the large open plain, you will start hiking right next to the creek. We crossed the creek a total of four times up to our lunch spot. You most likely will have to get your feet wet. Watch out because the rocks are very slippery. The next part of the trail heading to our turn around point was up against the side of the canyon. This part had a lot of up and down hills, but were not too bad. The creek water was fairly cold nearing the end of November, but overall refreshing. Once we finished the hike, we camped back in the camp ground and it ended up drizzling on us all night. We woke up and threw all of our stuff into our trucks and headed out while it was still raining.

Once again I biked from Tempe up to the Echo Canyon trailhead and hiked up. Made it up in approx 25 minutes and down in 18 minutes. Great hike.

I did this hike at night with the college group from the Newman Center. We had mass at the top. It was a really cool experience. We also saw a lot of ringtail animals at the top that looked like squirrels. Running down Piestewa Peak at night is not a good idea, but it sure was fun.

I just completed this hike of the Wet Beaver Creek Loop. Wow is this a tough hike. I fell so many times racing down that creek my ankles and knees are killing me. This has to be the toughest and coolest hike I have ever been on. We set out at 3pm on Friday and went up the Apache Maid trail, camping that night on the soft dirt roadway on top of Hog Hill. Waking up before dawn on Saturday morning, we set out for Wouldrop canyon and entered into it. It was really fun climbing down this part. Watch out for all of the cool waterfalls that you will have to scramble past. Once we reached the convergence with Wet Beaver creek, we soon found water rushing from the spring. For the rest of the morning and afternoon we boulder hopped, fell, swam, cliff jumped, slipped and hiked our way through the eight or nine miles leading up to Bell Crossing. This seemed like it would never end and we had to swim through over 20 pools where there was no other way around. This was a very rugged trip especially to do in just over a day. We reached our car about 6:30pm after an amazing day down Wet Beaver Creek.

I hiked Thunderbird Park doing the H1 and H2 trails. This was a really easy hike and the group I was with was really slow so it was just a relaxing day.

I decided to hop on my mountain bike and ride from my house in Tempe up to the Echo Canyon Trail head. So I go ahead and do that, going up the canal and over to 44th street, up and over MacDonald Drive. After dismounting my bike, I head up to the summit of Camelback. This was my first time hiking Camelback and I loved it. Its a great workout for those quads (even better after biking over). I made it up in less that a half an hour and loved the awesome views of the entire Phoenix area from the top. I cannot wait to head back up to Camelback. On the way back down, I took it slow for the really rocky, steep decent, but at the railroad ties I couldn't help but sprint down. Only bad part about the whole trip is that I got three flat tires on my ride home. But hey, it was more of an adventure that way.

Hiked the Kiwanas trail in South Mountain Park with Eddie, Brian and David. This was an AZ Outing Club trip and we hiked from the parking lot up to the lookout tower. It was nice and cool in the shade of the canyon and the views from the lookout tower were spectacular. We were at the point where you can see way to the north and downtown Phoenix as well as looking south and east towards Chandler.
