Jake and I. We went out of Pima Dynamite TH and went out Hawknest trail for 1.5 miles and turned around.

Came across a rattlesnake in middle of trail…yay as 3 weeks ago I had Jake take a refresher snake avoidance class. How do you train the dog that staying 3 feet away doesn’t work, it needs to be 6 feet. He was not acting like the shock was coming as he approached. Barked and danced back and forth. He’s always on a lead when we walk I just worry when he’s by himself in the backyard.

This is a very popular loop hike at the Granite Mountain Trailhead. I went out on Bootlegger Trail and back on Granite Mountain Loop. I was wearing my Steward shirt so was stopped a half dozen times for questions. Lots of traffic as it’s spring break for many schools.

Not sure if I’m going to continue to drive to Fraesfield TH to hike as it takes a gallon of gas and I pass several TH on the way there. I like the lack of hikers/bikers, smooth and wide trails. Jake with me.

Started at Fraesfield TH in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Went N on Black Hill Tr then W or left on Dixileta Tr….turned around and returned the same way. Ran into 3 small groups and a few bikes. Trails are wide or service roads so easy hiking. Had Jake with me.

Similar to what I did last time. Went out 2 miles and turned around. Very quiet as I only saw 2 other hikers the whole time. Ran into another Steward, Art, at the TH on the way out. Nice to see as I’d see him all the time when I used to spend a lot of time at Starbucks. Buddy Jake was with me. :D

Had a 10-noon trailhead host time at Brown’s Ranch. Planned to get there early and hike to Browns Mt saddle. Toward the turnaround I started doing the math to make sure is not be late as another volunteer would be with me. Turned around about 1/3 of a mile from my target. Will plan better next time. Slow Monday at the TH as I only talked to and assisted 9 hikers/bikers in 2 hours.

Group of 8 Conservancy Stewards toured the new Browns Ranch Interpretive Trail. The City of Scottsdale is promoting the trail and is training Stewards to cover 2 hour shifts on the 1/2 mile trail to help answer visitors questions.

On October 18th the City of Scottsdale had a grand opening celebration for the Brown’s Ranch site interpretive trail. This trail, with information sign boards, is a .6 mile loop about 1.5 miles from the trailhead. It provides lots of information on the history of the Brown family as well as early cattle ranching in the Scottsdale area.

Spending a few days each summer for a break is becoming a thing along with doing this beautiful hike. Over the last few years my knee replacements and cardiac issues has greatly limited my hiking. While Judy and I did a short out/back I was happy with how I felt at 8000 feet.

Had a 8:45 AM start with 6 cars in the TH lot and 19 when we finished. Three downed trees we had to go over.

Hope I can do this hike again next year.

Heard about a paved trail in the McDowell Mountain Community in Scottsdale so Jake and I checked it out on Monday. There is a parking lot with about a dozen spots, 3 remained when I got there at around 9:30 AM. While the 6 foot wide path is 100% paved there are numerous washes that create some steep ups and downs. Past about a dozen hikers/dog walkers. Wish this was closer to home as distance and AEG work well for me.

Jake and I got started at 8:35 AM from the Pima/Dynamite TH. Judy was hiking out of Browns Ranch with 2 of her girl friends… they hike much faster than me and talk the WHOLE time.

Arlene Patton was a Docent at Spur Cross 19 years ago when I moved to the area. We used to hike together before she moved away. She invited me to join her on a hike today. Her knees are in bad shape so we took it slow. Big plus was we could easily walk and talk!
