For an early Father's Day gift, my wife let me gas my car up and head up to Flagstaff. This was a nice climb up a very smooth trail. Even though the grade was gentle to moderate the whole way up, this hike was fairly challenging to me since I am not used to climbing 10,000 foot mountains. The hike time listed above includes 30 minutes on top admiring the long distance views of the Grand Canyon, Sitgreaves Mountain, Bill Williams Mountain, and the San Francisco Peaks. Viewed a small herd of elk within the first mile of the trail. That was kind of neat since the only other time I saw this animal in the wild was at Yellowstone. There are lots of downed trees at the start of this trail I believe from the Pumpkin fire, but I would still drive back to hike this one again.

Traveled to the top of Mount Lemmon via the Sunset and Aspen Trails. Back down the Aspen and completed the loop through Marshall Gulch. Viewed a single doe and a large wild turkey along the way. Beautiful cool weather for a hike!

Since I had to work in Mesa later on this morning, I decided to fit in a few hours of hiking in the Superstitions. It started out as a eerie misty wet trip but the temps were nice and cool. The scenery was kind of different than in other parts of the Superstitions, but I enjoyed this hike better than I thought I would. The canyon area by Hackberry Springs was kind of nice and peaceful. Rocked hop down First Water Creek for awhile and ended up taking a side wash to a horse trail that somehow took me back to the horse trailer parking area. Saw many rabbits, a couple of cardinals, and a deer up on a cliff area.

First time solo out here. This rugged steep BLM trail makes for a good winter workout. I especially like the last half mile of boulder scrambling to the peak. Views were outstanding this morning of South Mountain, city of Phoenix, and the western mountain ranges in Arizona. Even caught a hazy glimpse of Flatiron, Picacho Peak, and Mount Lemmon in the distance. Froze my tail off at the start (7:30).

This was a nice short climb to a mesa that looks harder than it really is. Once on top it was fun to explore the many crisscrossing paths. You can really get close to the ledge too while admiring the views and sheer dropoffs. Shared the summit early this morning with a couple of hot air balloons that were floating from just above me.

This was more like a casual stroll with my wife Angie while visiting Sedona. She has had rheumatoid arthritis since she was 4 but wanted to try out some easy trails with me. This park would be very pretty in the fall with all the color changes by Oak Creek.

This was a fun hike at South Mountain Park. Actually completed this trip as a loop. Traveled up and along the ridgeline to Hidden Valley. The trail is pretty easy to follow for awhile but then fades away some in a few sections. Ventured on some phantom paths so I had to bushwhack a bit to get back on the ridgeline. Had a successful descent down to Hidden Valley. Ended up in the section between Window Rock and the Tunnel. Took the National Trail and Pima Canyon Road back to the trailhead. The ridgeline was the best part of the hike. Great views and I even noticed a coyote running about in a desert wash from up above.

Ran into all kinds of weather on this trip. It actually SNOWED! at the summit for 10 minutes while I was up there. The showers on the way back down made the footing around the saddle a bit tricky. A cold wind had most people wearing warm weather gear today.
