Just hiked from the parking area on CA89 up a little past Big Meadow. Got a late start. Not too crowded considering how late we got there and the fact it was July 4th. Got two birds to add to our newly created California Bird List, an Evening Grosbeak (jaw dropping gorgeous) and a Black-backed Woodpecker (kinda plain). Would've had a nice owl too but the damned thing never turned its head so we could ID it. ~~~~>:(

We actually went up Tortuga trail, and down Dragonfly trail, but I didn't want to make two photosets for this short but pleasant hike so I chose to put it with the newer trail. ;) Dragonfly is nice in that it winds up at, and goes through, the Jewel of the Creek Preserve, perhaps one of the most scenic parts of the area.

And I can't forget to add that it was very nice to meet Karen, our chance hiking partner for the day. Hope we can do some more!

Went to Usery Park and took the Pass Mountain Trail east from the park into the Goldfield hills. Weather kept us from going too far and we only made it about 2 miles in before we had to turn around. Nice hike but keep an eye out for the mountain bikers!

Never been to San Tan before so we thought we'd try it out. We took the Moonlight Trail to the San Tan Trail south for about a 4 mile round trip. Virtually flat the entire way. Nice hike for out-of-shapers like us. Not a whole lot in the way of visuals, especially this time of year, but the San Tan escarpments in the southern part of the park provide an interesting and stark backdrop to the horizon. Perhaps it's noteworthy that San Tan Mountain itself isn't even in the park but sits just outside on private property.

The small visitor center has a Gila Monster and a Mojave Rattlesnake among a few other critters.

We're on this new kick of looking for wild edibles, so we decided to try for wild grapes, which are easy to spot and all over the Sedona-area canyons. My wife was also hoping to find elderberries, but we didn't find any in the wash.

Note that if you're having a hard time finding Canyons Wrens for your AZ birding list (we'd only seen a handful before today), this is the place to see them at.

Braved 102 temps for a quick, one hour afternoon hike (hoping for some rattlers to photograph, but no luck). Too hot really. Paramedics were already pulling overheated people out of the park.

Engine seized on the way home. Expensive trip! :(

Weather wasn't cooperating so we turned around after about a mile and a half. I had the camera setting for indoor lighting, so 75% of my pictures turned out blue, as you can see on the last image. :( Sigh.

Many types of flowers as you can see. As I figure out what they are, I'll tag 'em.

We had intended to go to Tres Alamos Wilderness about 30 miles NW of Wickenburg - one of the few places where Joshua Trees and Saguaro Cacti can be photographed together - but we couldn't find the correct exit off of Hwy 93 in time. :( So as a backup we went to Hassayampa Preserve (we'd been there many times before) and moseyed around there for a few hours. Beautiful scenery as always. It's not really a "hike" (no more than Boyce-Thompson Arboretum is, say), but it's quite fun.

We didn't make it up to the Leap (us being old and all), but even along the way you can see the fantastic rock formations this area has to offer. Someone needs to protect this area from strip mining!

We parked at the intersection of Magma Mine Road and Forest Road 315 (aka No. 9 Road) and hiked up (well, down really) 315 for about a mile and a half until we stumbled across the creek bed we eventually decided to scrabble up. We got about a half mile up that canyon before we turned around.

Lots of birds in the mesquite bosques in the canyons right about now!
