We loved this hike, but we wandered ALL over the old logging roads on top looking for the darned connection to Telephone Trail and could not find it! :( Now that we know a LOT more about the logging roads, and have a bunch of GPS points logged, we're going to go back up Telephone and see if we can find it that way.

Overall, a great hike (not one for summertime though, too exposed).

Yvonne & Kris and I did this one for the first time since it was closed. It was still almost as lovely as it was before the fire, but in places it felt strangely foreign. Certain trees we knew are no longer there and, at one point on the switchbacks to the first bench, there is now a view that was once blocked by trees and brush. As always, sitting at the top with our sandwiches and a cold beer was sublime. I love Wilson. I just love it. :)

Kris & Yvonne & I intended to do this hike as a connecting loop to Thomas Point trail with the meetin hiking group that was coming up from Phoenix for the day. They were so late that we went up on our own. As always, the scramble up Telephone makes you aware of how strong your calves must actually be to push your body up and up and up.

We got to the top and we were hoping that the meetin group would show up with their map and help us find the connector trail, but no such luck. Using my GPS and my really woefully distant topo map (note to self, get a 1:25 map for the canyon), we managed to find an old logging trail, but without more information, we were hesitant to try to find the trail from there. So. . . we made the descent (often not very fun) on Telephone. We are determined to find the connection.

The Dogie Trail through Sycamore Canyon is lovely and tranquil. Tremendous views on all sides and solitude. We followed the trail to the Taylor Cabin, which was an oasis in the middle of the completely dry creek bed. Except for the rain-water basin someone had kindly refilled inside the cabin, there was not one single drop of water ANYWHERE in sight. From the cabin, we began the trek up and then DOWN Casner Mountain.

Both of us agreed that the Casner Mountain Trail, while it does have some lovely views from the top, was a "do it once and never again" kind of trail. It's a tough climb to the top and a rocky and steep descent that was hellish on tired legs. I also think the distances listed in our guidebook were incorrect, but perhaps I was just moving much more slowly than I ever do.

If I do the trip again, it will be an out and back to the cabin and I'd spend two nights in the canyon area. I'd also LOVE to see the area with some water. Also, does anyone know anything about the Ott Well? We saw a sign, but no well.

Me, Chris and Jeff:

I didn't think this hike was drab at all. Rather, crossing the creek was lovely and the views were incredible. It is, however, quite steep and covered with loose rocks and not very cut back. Not a hike for a sunny, hot day and one should wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to avoid being scratched up.

This was quite something! It was more of a challenge than any of the books said, mostly because there's no way to account for all of the consistent feet gained and feet lost. The trail was relentlessly up and down and covered with loose rocks, deep sand and river rocks. That said, this was an incredible trip. In the Spring months, you'd be fairly safe assuming you could bring a water filter and find water from First Canyon onward, but during the summer, you'd better be prepared to do some long, hot, tough, shadeless hiking with gallons of water strapped to your back!

CM & Me: This is one of the rockiest and most unforgiving hikes ever! The reward is not worth the effort. It's not one I'll do again. :(

This was a perfect day for this hike. 60's and sunny the whole time. Got to the saddle and went north toward the basalt tower. I stopped when I started seeing scary-looking paw prints and scat. Bear? Mountain lion? The views on this trail really are unparalleled. Too bad the Forest Service has made the sign so damned big!

The most beautiful hike ever? I dunno. It was nice, but it didn't beat some of the Sedona hikes.

This hike is crowded for the first 1.5 miles and then the pack thins out dramatically! There are lots of lovely pines and aspens (although most of the leaves were already blown off of the trees by the time I got there this year). There are several rocky, gravelly patches that make for some slippery going and a few tough-ish inclines (for those of us who don't live in Flag).

Windy up top, but overall, this is a fairly warm (shadeless) hike.

Me, Chris Myers, Melanie, Jeff

Beware of overgrown prickly things at the start of this trail. WEAR pants and long sleeves. Also, the beginning is super sandy, slow going. After we turned onto the Secret Mountain Trail, we stopped to have one of Chris's amazing lunches. GREAT lunch, but tons of flies. Surely there must be something we could do about that next time. The Secret Cabin looks like a fun place to camp and/or have a fire.

NOTES: Stabbed in the knee by Century plant on the way out. AND ran out of water. Double the water and wear long clothes.

 Wow! Quel VUE magnifique! This was one of the best days of my life. Chris Myers and I hiked up to the summit. Gorgeous Arizona weather and great company. It was a toughie, but the views made the entire trip.

Make sure to layer. The top was BEYOND cold and windy.
