I finally did some hiking here in Ohio. The Hocking Hills area is really cool, some areas are reminiscent of the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. We (my wife and I) rented a cabin with another couple that we're friends with. On New Year's day we hiked from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls and back, making a 6 mile loop out of it. Along the way, we passed some awesome waterfalls, mossy boulders, and trees with crazy root clusters. We also passed Rose Lake, which was frozen with ice about 1" thick.

On January 2nd, we hiked the Rock House area, which is a small natural cave with an opening at each end. Then we went to Conkle's Hollow and hiked around the rim of the hollow. It reminded me of hiking along the Mogollon Rim. Our total miles was only about 4, but we had a lot of elevation gain if you can believe that. We also checked out a climbing and rappelling area, but the sandstone was too damp for climbing.

On January 3rd we drove to Ash Cave and did a short 1.5 mile hike. Ash Cave is a huge overhanging cliff. A trickle of a waterfall was pouring over, and a pile of ice and snow lay at the bottom. We then drove north to Cantwell Cliffs for another short hike. One of the attractions here is the Fat Woman Squeeze, which is just like Fat Man's Pass at South Mtn Park.

We actually had sunshine everyday, so it was a great way to start off the new year. Now I'm just waiting for the crappy weather... I know it's coming.

Climbing one last time before leaving AZ. Went with my wife and Suz. We saw a bear along the Beeline on the way there.

Went with my wife and Suz. We spent a lot of time goofing around and rappelling down the waterfalls. We didn't exit the canyon at the correct spot, so the return trip probably took us a little longer than it should have.

I went out this evening to check out my new backyard. I've been out here a few times before, but I've only seen a blur while bombing the San Tan trail on my mtn bike.
I was on a scouting mission, looking for a saguaro with good blooms that I could easily photograph. Well, I found my saguaro, but it looks like I'll have to give it another week or so.
I felt like I had the place to myself. It sure is a beautiful park. I can see myself spending many evenings during the week roaming the area.

Took my wife and a few friends here for the weekend. We did some fishing with minimal success. Pickletree bummed a raft ride through the rapids, but the raft flipped. Lots of excitement!

This was a loop trip which included the Hoolie Bacon Trail, Red Tanks Trail, Randolph Canyon, and JF Trail.

Seven of us met at the road to Tortilla Ranch, and piled into various 4WD vehicles for the 3 mile trip to Tortilla Trailhead. Along the way we picked up a cool dude named Roger who was escaping the snow of Colorado. He was doing a loop that included the Hoolie Bacon Trail, an off-trail route to the Peters Trail and the Peters Trail back to Tortilla TH.
When we hit the JF Trail it was overcast and temps were quite cool. We warmed up a bit on the climb over Horse Ridge. We made decent time to the Red Tanks Trail. The climb to Red Tanks Divide was not nearly as laborious from this direction. There was an area on the way down towards Randolph Canyon that was bursting with poppies.
We took a break at Randolph Canyon and then decided to head up the canyon instead of going down to Fraser Canyon. This was slow going. There is a lot of water flowing through the canyon, so we were trying to keep our feet dry. This didn't last too long. Even though the trails (like Red Tanks) were overgrown, I probably got stuck by more catlaw in Randolph Canyon. Thankfully there were a couple of small campsites right where I thought there would be, at the confluence of Randolph and some small side canyons.
Camp was uneventful. Just lots of food, drink, laughs, and indecent conversation. Camp as usual.
Sunday was warm and sunny, just in time for the long climb up the JF Trail to Tortilla Pass. From the Pass, the JF Trail is quite a pleasant stroll. Two small climbs within the first 2 miles or so, and then the trail opens up and stays high on some ridges. The views of the Supes and Four Peaks are outstanding. This was by far my favorite trail on the trip and I can't believe that I've have never done it until now.
These trails are all very rocky, and since our feet were taking a beating we did not make any side trips.
Thankfully Apache Junction is home to Tres Banderas, an eating establishment with your choice of Mexican, Italian or American food. Something for everyone. We fueled up there and then I went home and passed out. This trip was slightly strenuous but it was really awesome!

Thanks to everyone who came along! Liz and I had a lot of fun!

I woke up this morning and looked out the window. Rain. It's a perfect day to explore! At 10 AM my friend Josh and I piled into his Jeep and headed west on I-10, bent on exploring the Eagletail Mountains. After passing the Palo Verde Nuclear Power Plant, Saddle Mountain and the Palo Verde Hills came into view. The sheer cliffs and rugged beauty definitely got our attention! To heck with the Eagletails, lets check this out!

We exited onto Salome Rd, and headed southeast. The road was mud and the Jeep was sliding around. Good times. We turned west onto Courthouse Rd for a short distance and then south onto a jeep road that twisted back towards the ominous mountains. As we got nearer to the area we wanted to explore, clouds swirled low and fast around the peaks. We decided that's where we should try to end up. We found a trail which seemed to peter out after about 100 yards, but we continued up a bush-choked wash. We spied some tall, dry cliffs about a half-mile away to the east. We climbed a slope to the cliffs, hoping that the rock would be bullet and that we could come back to rock climb. Nah, it was complete choss. Not wanting to waste more time, we contoured on the slope around the mountain side, first to the south, and then to the east. The footing was terrible. If the rock under foot wasn't slippery, then it was loose. Sometimes it was slippery and loose. I spent a fair amount of time on my butt. Around the south face of the mountain, we came upon a 40 foot waterfall. We found a way to climb up next to the fall. At the top we took a break under a small overhang. I was getting tired of slipping and falling, and my pants were already soaked through. But, it was sadistically fun, so we decided to keep on going. We climbed another slope and found ourselves even higher on the mountain, closer to the swirling clouds. Of course the wind was getting stronger as well. Several times I had to hunker down to keep from being blown off-balance and pitching backward down the steep slope of solid rock we were climbing. (I found it was easier to climb up the solid rock watercourses, even with water running down them, than to climb up the loose dirt and rock next to them.)
After awhile we reached a point on the south side of the mountain where it seemed to dangerous to go any further. The slopes steepened dramatically and the clouds were enveloping us, making it hard to pick out a route ahead. We decided to retreat. We hastily made our way downhill, only to find ourselves cliffed out. We backtracked a bit and then took the same route down as we did coming up. Down climbing the waterfall was kind of sketchy, but the footing was surprisingly solid. After the waterfall, Josh spooked some sort of critter. We don't know what it was. It was medium sized, like a fox, and had a dark stripe running down it's lighter colored body and tail (at least that's how Josh described it; I only caught a glimpse of it). The rest of the hike was uneventful.
We stopped at the Tin Top Bar and Grill in Wintersburg for a bite to eat. I had the best open-faced chili-cheeseburger I've ever had in my life, along with a pile of french fries and large Fat Tire. Never before have I enjoyed eating food while sitting in a bar, soaking wet and shivering my butt off. It was all worth it though.
