It's been a while since I posted & thought I would since I did not see anyone comment recently on the road conditions. Coming from the East side of Ahwatukee, it made sense to take the route through Maricopa - which, with no traffic, is at least 30 minutes shorter each way (& there is always traffic!). A 4WD was a must this time (it was not the last time I did this - just good clearance). With the washes being washed out and road eroded, there were 3 technical areas to maneuver -- which we did - yay :y: - Glad I was not alone!
So onto the hike - well it seemed longer than I remember and also prettier than I remember - this is my 4th time to the summit. Guess I am getting old. I think the last time I was here was in 2012 or 2013 -- maybe both years. I took my beloved Merlot one of those years and we went to the total summit together. This time, I left my current dog Snowy down below while I climbed the last bit. There didn't seem to be a way to get him up there - and I wanted him/us to be safe. Maybe I was younger and more brave last time
The trail is in EXCELLENT shape - much better than I remember. Even the cholla were mostly cleared and there were lots of little white flowers. Someone put a metal cross memorial tribute in the beginning part of the climb. The BLM left sheets and there is a sign in box at the start. We started very late and got back to Hwy 238 just as the sun set completely. Now - onto the good stuff -- Sushi!

Our intention for the hike was to go in a couple of hours and turn around. Though the hike is not difficult technically, hiking through the water for hours is tiring :D We were thinking we'd find a couple of canyons - but we only found/ventured into Hells acre on the way back. Water level was ankle to knee deep & we found ourselves hiking in the water most of the way to our turn around spot - as it was cooler and easy to follow. Do not wear tevas - as rocks will be under foot all the time. I changed out of mine right away & put on boots (use socks too - and tie tightly to avoid the rocks entering).
We went in 3.4 miles, just before I guess Javelina Canyon -- there were waterfalls and we had lunch. The hike back with the sun starting to go down cast beautiful light in the canyon & we found our trek back (with the current) to be prettier and easier. We used a side trail for about a mile coming back and made better time. Our moving avg was 1.9 mph overall - so not fast whatsover. We hiked about 6.5 miles - as we must have hiked more directly coming back. We did run into 4 seperate groups of people & it was fun to chat. We were the only ones not there for multiple days. One hardy group of elderly women did the hike end to end w/ 1 night camping. Woohoo for them :y: They said the prettiest part of the canyon was in the middle - guess we would have had to go another mile or two in. Next time : )) We were very lucky to buy our permits the day before, as everything was sold out. Yee haa. Enjoy!

3rd time was a charm : )) Didn't take a pooch - weather was right for a Superstition Peak delight. My GPS shows just over 11 miles round trip from the Hiero trailhead -- 3.9 miles one way (as listed on the site) appears to start after you finish Hiero trail.
So glad that we did this trail (or climb) today. Perfect. Cheers to all for a Happy New Year!!
PS: Ran into some fellow Hike AZ people coming from Carney TH.
Oh - must mention - the waterfalls were to die for pretty!

Beautiful day for a hike in the Supes -- perfect temp! Nice & cool like my huskies and I like it
We followed the cairns up & got to a point that my dog had difficulty -- so, luckily, there was a group behind me that I joined :app:
Two areas required more than just me to get my dog up & down.....so, I would only recommend this for dogs that are hiking with more than 1 person, is an experienced off leash climber (mine is on leash), or that enjoys riding on your back.
Very nice climb up to the Superstition Ridgeline -- only a short distance and 600' more to the summit of Supe Peak....
One of the hikers was having a hard time, so she stayed below. The group didn't want to leave her for too long, so we turned at the Ridgeline to head back down. Supe Peak was super tempting!! But I'm saving it for another day when I have a human and not a canine - better to get my pup safely down with the help of some new friends! Plus I have been there before : )
Our GPS showed 4.1 miles one way to the Ridgeline -- I would imagine it was another .5 miles to the summit.
I need to update my profile pic, as both the huskies on it are no longer with me :( I have 2 others - Snowy - Dance's with Wolves and Subia - Romps over Rainbows.... Snowy is pictured with me in this post. Cheers all - I should post more of my hikes -- as I get out at least 3 times every week.

My last hike in the Supers this Winter/Spring - heading to the San Juans. Picked this one again & glad that I did, as 2nd Time was a charm : )
Would like to do it as a loop down Carney next season, as coming down on the scree is not most of my friends bag. Glad that I had Fido with me today. She rocked, litereally!!
We took the standard route, not via Balanced Rock, and it was quite warm with an 8:30am start.... there was some scrambling and rock climbing that was difficult for my husky, so we had to find routes around - which we did ;)
As we were getting quite high, it was getting pretty hot, so we decided to head down a bit and sit in the shade for lunch. I was concerned about my husky overheating, so thought this was a decision point for us. Got quite a bit under our belts already and didn't want to chance it. Well, as we were having our lunch - the weather Gods appeared and provided cloud cover - :y: I decided that it was o.k. for us to proceed. Continued our scrambling up the steep South side of Superstition Peak - fun, fun, fun! I did have a little cairnage (sniglet) -- when grabbing a rock that wasn't stable, it tumbled into my forearm and gave it a little slice - no biggy. We continued up until the sun peaked through again and we were very close to the ridgeline. I knew that Merlot (my husky) couldn't climb to the Peak & I had been there before; so decided that why push her -- we took some pics and headed on back. The hike back is not for the scree-phobic. Take a different route for sure. There was quite a bit to deal with on the steep downhill.
All in all an awesome hike, but definitely not for all. Must like to scramble and handle scree, both uphill and downhill. My dog & I went through 3 1/2 Liters of water and a small gatorade.
Would love to get some of my rugged CO friends to do this one next year :GB:

Well - we attempted Supe Peak via Hiero following the directions via Balanced Rock -- leaving the trail prior to the Hieroglyphics. We had a person in the party not comfortable with the climbing and fear of having to go down the way we came up :o , so we abandoned the mission and found an easier way down for her. Will be reattempting again, but this time starting beyond the petroglyphs
Will keep y'all posted.

Waterfalls were beautiful & a plenty

:y: This was by far the most rewarding day hike that I've done in Arizona thus far. Surpasses both the Grand Canyon and Mt. Humphrey's by far for a sense of accomplishment. Yee Haa - we finally did it!!

OK- down to the nitty gritty. We previously hiked Superstition Peak via the Carney Springs trailhead (Nov 2011) & also I have hiked the Flat Iron/Supe Mtn many a time & everyone in our party has hiked this as well. Decided to hike Carney to Siphons and also to reserve a camp site spot for (check in is not till 2PM & check out is @ 2PM)) so 2 nights was necessary. This saved an extra 20-30 minutes at the end when we were ready to be done. Everyone was thankful that we did! We left Ahwatukee @ 5:25am and dropped the car at the Lost Dutchman and headed over to Carney Springs TH -- started the hike @ sunrise - 7:05am. Finished a few minutes after 5PM.
To the hike. Fantastic, gorgeous, the best the desert has to offer. Even spotted some wildflowers - paintbrush, trumpets, etc...

Trail was VERY well marked with cairns and easy to follow the proper route. ?A good portion of the middle section of the hike beyond Supe Peak was very time consuming with all the scree/sideways trail, rock hopping and one tricky spot to descend with a pretty big drop off and small foot and hand holds :o . This spot put us back about 20-30 minutes because it was harder for some to overcome the fear of falling.

We each brought 4 Liters of Water and electrolytes. Only one person went through all of theirs, but not till the very end. I drank 3.5 liters of water and a Vitamin Water. Would not recommend doing this hike with any less liquid if it is 70 degrees or cooler. If it is much warmer, I wouldn't personally do it. However, if one were to decide to go, bring more than 4 Liters.
We did not run into a single soul until we got to the plane crash site & down Flat Iron/Siphons. The solitude added all that much more to our great experience. It took us 10 hours to complete this hike, with just over 2 hours of break time. So, the GPS on my wrist showed that I was on the move for 7 hours 58min. We stopped for 2 snacks and lunch in between -- 4 women drinking lots of water -- several short stops : ))

Of course, we had to celebrate our accomplishment after picking up the starting car. Headed to our favorite spot De La Cruz Restaurant on 60 by Bashas. AWESOME food, very crowded, filled with birds : ) LOL

This is a must do - but make sure you are with someone who can route find, has a great map/compass and sense of direction and is familiar with the area. A GPS is a plus too.
DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT underestimate the difficulty or time required for this hike. We were very prepared - even had gear in case we got stuck overnight - though confident that we would not!

We all give this hike an A+++++ :wlift:

:) -- A beautiful morning in the Supes with 3 great friends. We followed Joe's route directions. Easy trail to follow & also an easy/moderate hike overall. Confusing point was when we came to an area approximately 1.25 miles in on the Bluff Springs Trail -- intuitively we wanted to head North, yet there was also another cairned trail to our West. We started on the faint North trail & decided that this was not correct after .1 miles :scared: We turned back and headed West & realized when we arrived at the Terrapin junction that this was indeed correct. We trucked on by the Terrapin junction and looked for where the ridge met the trail/wash area just after .5 miles. No problemo! Started heading up what we assumed was Bluff Spring Mountain or 4041 or the Summit area. The brush was very thick & there was a lot of scree. :o After getting scraped, cut & one of us slipping into a cactus - we rethought what we were doing & if this was a good or really the easiest way to proceed. Carried on up to a ridge @ 3500' and called it our summit : )) Views were fabulous.
:-k We weren't sure if we were on the right mountain & if we could easily maneuver down what we had just come up. Wish that there were a few cairns to guide us -- as the grade or difficulty was not a problem - the terrain was as was the route finding. Be that as it may, we found a less brushy way down & did have a concern about snakes, as it's still 80 degrees in the valley - WHAT?! When we got back to the Bluff Springs trail, we decided we didn't have enough hiking in - so carried on a little further to the junction of Dutchman #104. The rest is ancient history. :-({|= On our return - we still questioned which was the "true" Bluff Springs Summit -- as where we entered off of the trail seemed to be much further East of the acutal bluff. Should we have stayed in the wash & headed West for a while before heading up? Hard to tell - Oh well. Great day, beautiful views, fun time & awesome Mexican Food for lunch & drinks close by on the 60. What can beat that? Cheers!! :thanx:

Thanks for the description on Mt. Peeley - easy to find, easy to get to trailhead & easy to hike to 7000'. We showed 10.7 miles from the highway - - close enough to 10.
Love this web-site & have used it often, but have never posted a hike. Don't know why, as I usually have plenty to say. I've hiked the desert so much, that I usually don't bring my camera anymore (sorry, no photos to post). Mt. Peeley is a great dose of high altitude desert with a peak experience - - gotta love seeing Horseshoe Lake & 360 Panaromic.
Warning: I wouldn't hike this if the temp in the valley is forecasted to be 100 degrees or above. If above 90 degrees in the valley, start early. We hiked on a 72 degree valley day & found the weather to be absolutely perfect. A little cold at the top - - no biggy.
There are now cairns marking the way to the top....we chose our own route going up/down - - and made the descent steeper than it needed to be. For those non-daredevils - follow the cairns!!
Tidbit: Mazatzal - prounounce Mah-zat-zail derived from the Aztec culture, meaning land of the deer.
