:( Well this will be my last triplog on Hike Arizona. Because I'm moving back to CO in February.
And when I'm up there I will be posting information about trails on Crosier Mountain.

Hike was very scenic to say the least for my last hike in AZ.

And I would like to thank Joe Bartels for this wonderful site, and all of its information.
Hope to find a few of you up in CO when it is 120 ++ in AZ.

Haven't been on this trail since spring '09. Finally found some time to give this one another hike.
Started out on the trail head on Rt. 87 N33°45.878' ~ W111°29.600', headed North paralleling Rt. 87 till the trail swings to the East and follows the side of the hill next to Pine Creek. Since the sun was still low in the sky, picture opportunities were awesome. There was water still flowing in Pine Creek from the rains about a week ago. After about a hike of 1.6 miles, with about a 400 ft. gain I reached the junction of the Ballantine trail. From there the real uphill starts, where you will gain another 1,000 ft. and top out at the so called rock formation known as the "Trojan Horse" of the Ballantine.
The rocks and scenery after you leave the trail junction just get better as you progress up the trail. One can see to the West and pick out Red Mountain which is along the Salt River. Just before you reach boulder flats on the South side of the trail is a topographic place name, shown as "The Boulders" which is very neat since they are so jumbled and red in color well the rest of the area grey granite color is the major theme. Eventually the "Trojan Horse" will make its appearance to the left of the saddle. By this time the trip was approximately 3.75 miles with an elevation gain of approximately 1400 ft.
The view of the boulders is one of the prominent features of this area. One can see a tower on a hill that is quite a distance to the West. Took some more photos and had lunch and went back to the start of the Ballantine trail and took the Southern loop of the Pine Creek which rises to the top of the ridge before it heads back down hill to the parking lot. A very enjoyable area to take a hike in, due to awesome scenery and amazing amounts of boulders.

This was the Déjà vu hike because I haven't been up the Bluff Springs Trail since the early 90's. When I took several of my sons along on a hike. Using nothing but a map and compass to find our way. I can remember meeting another dad with one of his kids, he had a map. And I asked him do you have a compass to go with that map. And he replied, no I don't. My comment to him was that was like having a gun with no bullets. And he turned around and headed back to the Peralta Trail Head.
On this trip we did not even go all the way to the Terrapin trail junction, the goal to see the back side of Geronimo's Bluff (knob) and take some photos was met. And we will be back up here again to take some more pictures of the hoodoos that seem to define this area.
So we headed back to the infamous Cave Trail and headed up. I only went as far as the top of the cliff, while my sons and a friend went up to the Cave. I wanted to take some long range telephoto shots of then going up the Bald Mans Forehead and Devils slide. And after they came back down we headed on down the trail to the car and something cold to drink.

I've wanted to do a short hike on this trail for about two years. Finally had the time to do it, and was really pleased to visit such a nice place.
Found a dead tarantula, frost kill, on the trail. After we reached the junction of the Cross F & Sunflower we headed south to the FSR and did some off trail excursions just to play with a map and compass. Had a pleasant encounter with some horses, not sure if they were wild, for I can't seem to remember any brands on them. They were most likely some stock from the Cross F ranch.
Nothing better than a slow hike with one of your kids and awesome weather to make it a very enjoyable day.

I keep asking my self why such a long hike for your first hike of the season. And I keep finding the answer floating in the Whoopee Cloud, I did it. Now lets go do some more.
The plan of the day was to take a friend and his grand daughter on a hike into the the Sups. And that we did, it was awe inspiring to see a very young teenager enjoy the benefits of the back country in lieu of a TV, or a video game. And she had the gumption to complete the entire hike without any complaints. :y:
Shortly after we entered the Coffee Flats trail we noticed the scars of a forest (brush) fire, that was not there when I was last in this area about a year and a half ago. I'll probably contact the USFS and see when this fire took place.
The opportunities for some picture taking was omnipresent and truly enjoyed the day on the trail, looking forward to other hikes as the weather continues its cool down.

Ok my curiosity got the better part of me, so I decided that I would at least walk to the ruins as on of my conditioning hikes for the upcoming hiking season. Spotted a coyote on the way in up on the Burserra Ridge, but we continued on. Our goal besides the lost ruins was to see what the Gila Draw looked like. Because I want to eventually make a trail description for the Western end of the Gila Trail. The ruins were a good spot to take a short break before we headed back down the trail.
Weather conditions were sunny with a slight breeze.

Took a short but very wet hike in the San Tans. Had to do some cache maintenance on parts of an older cache. Mission was accomplished, had no trouble finding and removing some of the old clues and their containers. :y:

Looking forward to a full hike on Sat. 23 of the San Tan, Hedgehog, Malapi and San Tan Trail.

Thought I would try some intown areas for a change. And this was a nice training hike. Weather was in the high 70's to low 80's. Twas a good hike to do some getting in shape, and really enjoyed the smoggy views when I finally hit the road. Then went West on the National to the Pyramid for a short distance then back to the car.

Second hike of the season, and I'm starting to wonder why those hills get bigger every year. Oh well I'm still going. Took a friend up up the infamous cave trail to do some map and compass work with him. Even though he has traveled the trail several times this was the first time that the route was counter clockwise for him. We hung a cord over the cliff face just so I could do a GPS track and be be as close as possible to the dotted line on the map. I took my friend to several places on the trail that he has never seen, and he was awed by the beauty of these jewels of the trail. After looking at the needle we went down the peralta trail and that is one trail I totally dislike. Next time I do the cave trail I'll just go up and down on the trail and stay off the Peralta.

This has to be one of the best hikes I've ever had on the cave trail. I had three goals in mind, one was to take some good photos that could be used as panos; the second was to find my way to the pine tree lookout without going by way of Fremont Saddle. And hopefully find an area up there that I visited twenty years ago. Which is a fairly flat place with some awesome rocks etc; and I know this place as the Garden. I plotted some points on the trail dex aerials and headed that way. Once I arrived at the area I realized that is was not the safe route, I had tried this before. So we headed South from where we were at N33?24.968' & W111?21.579' worked our way uphill to N33?24.941' & W111?21.582' Then swung to the West, shortly after that we picked up the Old Trail, which I've tracked before coming from the Overlook to Geronimo's Cave. And lo and behold we found the Garden, :y: where I was able to take some nice pictures, an option that I didn't have twenty years ago.
After getting near the pine tree overlook we headed to Fremont Saddle and limped down the Peralta. My old knees didn't like the hike, but I did, so they have to stay with me for awhile. While we were goofing off on our 4.5 hours of nothing I was able to get a lot of decent pictures and some were good enough for some nice panos.

I've been to this area twice this season, and finally remembered to write a triplog. Took the Dutchman's Trail to Coffee Flats and then went on a wee cross country trip. Was able to see both Weaver's & Miner's Needle in one view. Took some pictures and will be back there next fall to take some more. On the way out we took the Old Road from the Coffee Flat trail and followed the fence line till we found the trail from the Quarter Circle Ranch, then headed North till we found the Dutchman's trail. Saw my first Giant Desert Centipede, what a big bug.
Weather was warm but not all that unpleasant, looking forward to another hike in this area again.

Drat forgot to put the battery back in the camera. But had the video camera so all was not lost. Hiked all the way back to the Big Cactus and had some lunch. Temperature was unseasonably warm for Dec. 30th. So that made the shade at lunch that much more enjoyable. Met an older gentleman that was traveling by horse, he mentioned that the trail that goes near the Quarter Circle Ranch and heads North back to the main trail was fairly easy for the horse. Now that makes horse sense, because a section of the Coffee Flat trail is the broken rock twisty ankle kind that this old goat does not like. So I'll have to go back out again and see if I can make a track log out of that area. Looking forward to other hike before it warms up in a few more months.

Haven't been back here since '94 and really enjoyed the hike. Bushwhacked till we found the section marker they went uphill to look around. After lunch we headed East then south down the canyon. Headed to the gate where the old road is then turned around and headed for the Old Corral and headed out. Weather was awesome, views were real nice also

:y: I need to get back in shape. :M2C:
Had a nice up UP the Cave Trail, lots of GPS bounce so I won't bother with a map load.
Weather was misty, then rain, then clear, then it started to get cooler. Soon after that POPCORN SNOW was coming down. So we bailed out from the Geronimos Cave and headed for the Peralta Trail.
I never knew my new car heater could feel so good.

Nice day on one of my favorite trails. I was joined on the hike with a good friend from CO, and two of his mountaineering students who now reside in the valley. We went up the trail and since I didn't load last years track into the GPS we had to take the so called social trail from the cave to Freemont Saddle. Someday I'll figure out just where to go up there and until then I'll just enjoy what is around me.

Finally have found the urge and time to write a triplog. And there hasn't been many trips since last year, when Valley Fever laid me lo. Today I had a good friend from CO hiking and looking for several of my geocaches in the park. With all the meandering around we did the triplog was about 12 miles. Never really kept track of the time since we were having so fun. :y:
San Tan Park is so close to town but when you get down on the malpais trail you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. Ok time to re-pack for a jaunt up the cave trail tomorrow.

Just a nice morning walk waiting for the sun to arrive. Twas a very quiet day down there, there a a lot of blue flowers all over the place, and the hedgehogs are starting to bloom also. Saw a bird that I did not know what the species was having a nice breakfast on the Ocotillo blossoms. Was able to play a wee bit with the camera so maybe I can do a photoset.
Looking forward to a day up on the Lil Saddle trail tomorrow.

:y: This is the BEEN THERE DONE THAT HIKE but with some very fond memories :y: Which I would like to share with you.

The first time that I hiked this wonderful trail was around 18 years ago when my kids were still young. And back then this trail really was the begining of the my learning curve for hiking. All we had was a USFS map from 1986 and a few other tidbits of scant knowledge about this mysterious trail. Well after one exploratory hike that started on the Bluff Springs Trail (235) to the junction of the Cave Trail (233). Which at that time still had a trail sign. So up we went, with nothing but a map and compass and enough sense to know if we were not sure of where we were at we would just turn around and do it another time. Well we made it as far as the cliff face which is just North West of Cathedral Rock (3445). So we decided that we couldn't make it up that cliff. Then we decided to look around a wee bit, and we found ourselves at the base of 3445. And could see the caves and hikers that were coming down. I wanted to get up on top of the cliff and see if I could figure out where the trail went. So the following week we went up to Freemont Saddle, found our way to the Caves. And then the real fun began, we had our first encounter with what is known now as the Devils Slide. Man that is an adventure with some young kids in tow, and I was wondering how I was going to tell my wife that I lost a few of her darlings up on the mountain. We soon found ourselves at the edge of the so called TUB. Well we came up with a name for that rock from the Tub downwards. The Bald Mans Forehead and that was then a nice scramble and stil is. So after getting down that nice piece of AZ ROCK we headed to the trail went around the North side of the hump, then back to the trail. And eventually found our way to the cliff. Ok now we are on top of the Cliff and how do we get down. Well with a little searching we found what we know as the crack and found our way down. After that following the trail that we took a week ago it was just a short walk down the hill.

And we then did a lot of hikes over the next few years going up to the Cave from the Bluff Springs Trail. And even did it several times while being in AZ on vacation from CO. So last year I had to urge to go back up that trail again and play with the GPS on the trail, a luxury I didn't have 18 years ago. And that urge hit me again this year, but now I have TOPO for AZ and really wanted to track this trail. And really see how close it was to the dotted line on the TOPO map. Well I was quite surprised to see how really close it was to the map. I have one more trip on the agenda up there before it gets hot to see if I can finish up the one spot that doesn't match the lines.

Ok now for the summary of todays hike. It was real nice for I had a hiker meet me compliments of our forums and up we went. We only met two backpackers and their dog on the way up. And when heading for the cave we could see the masses starting to head up the Peralta. So we made our way to the slide and went down the bald mans forehead and found our way the rest of the way with no problem. Actually this was only my second time going down this trail. All of the other trips other than the first were uphill. And I think that the uphill is easier once you know your way. This trip also gave me one of the funniest signal bounces for the GPS that I ever had, I really can't remember the airborne flight across the Peralta Trail over the hoodoos and back to the cave. But it must of been fun.

I would like to thank Joe for the awesome write up about this trail. I sure wish I had this much information 18 years ago.

A very pleasant and green day to take a hike and try and learn how to use the new camera.
Being a day short of St. Paddys day it was nice to see all of the green finery that the dessert has to offer after a very wet winter. Some of the wildflowers were starting to bloom but haven't done it in full force yet. The red buds on the very green ocotillos were very pretty. I just hiked the full San Tan Trail to where it meets the Goldmine Trail, which was the trail used to exit the park. Now to see if I can figure out how to do a photoset and I won't be doing a GPS log for this trip because there are allready done for the major trails in this park.

Well my initial intentions were to hike the San Tan and parts of the Malapi. But the ranger asked me for some input for some possible new trails to incorporate into their master plan. I knew where I wanted to go and find out where the trail from the Northwest side hooks up with the old roads that are out there. So off I went by way of the Goldmine trail, then took the San Tan Trail till it meets an old road (0436297mE & 3670682mN)continued down that road in a westerly direction till I found another old road (0438883mE & 3670462mN). As I was looking for the location of my old track from the North I found a small cairn, (0438667mE & 3670465mN), so I headed into and out of the wash and found a spur and headed North. And much to my chagrin there were a fair amount of horse tracks along with some large arrows scratched into the dirt that was softend by the recent rains. So I hiked North till I picked up the old trail that comes from the North. I saved my track and cleared the track log, then tracked my way back to the San Tan Trail. Picked up the service road and headed out. Next time I may hike the whole (unoffical) trail from the North and back over by way of the Goldmine Trail. When you hear the weather reports that are coming from the East Cost one realizes how nice we have it out here, at least until summer.
