With everything going on with work, we've been 'out of the loop' so to speak, so I was desperate to get a quick jaunt in this morning before going back to the drawing board. There were only 2 cars in the lot when we arrived, but about a dozen when we got back an hour later. Nice morning, so good to get out, even if for a brief time.

Rosie and I just wanted to stretch our legs after yesterday and get the poor dogs out for a jaunt since they were pretty much stuck inside most of yesterday while we gallivanted about Oracle and Marana. So I took her to see my favorite trail running area down here. She didn't want to run, so we walked it, which is always weird, but it was a gorgeous day! We were actually quite warm on the trail. A big difference at 70 degrees today from the 20s and 30s of yesterday!

Well, I got ready and rumbled! Well, ok, except replace the r with st...... :lol: What a great course they set up for the half out of Oracle State Park. Lots of rollers and nice open plain-like terrain. It was SOOOOOOOO flipping freezing, no one wanted to take their down jackets off to start, but we all know we'll warm up not too long after starting the run. Man was it COLD!!!! I believe it was about 27 degrees at the start, and only got up to about 36 during the run. I started out with a nice clump of people for a couple miles, and then everyone started to spread out. People came and people went, and I just didn't care. I had 2 goals for this event - 1) to finish without stopping and 2) to finish in under 3 hours. I did both, so :y: , and even finished in under 2.5 hrs, so bonus! And only stopped for about 15-30 seconds or so to get a drink of water, so I don't count that. :) I just walked the hills since I can walk them faster than run them :lol: , and the only torturous part of the whole course were the 2 mile plus long stretches in the washes. The first quarter mile of the first wash was at least frozen since it was in the shade, so that made it ok since the surface was harder, but the rest of the about 3/4 of a mile of that one and the about 1.5 miles of the second wash were unexpected torturous sandy stretches.

Made it in the top 10 females, so I am happy with that. My friend Rosie did the 10K - her first race after being in that horrible accident over 3 years ago. She did great, so we went and celebrated at Catalina Brewing Company afterward. Man, their beer was the best part of the day! :)

Neither Lee nor I had done Wasson from this start, so it was a new adventure for both of us. We decided to head up Kings Canyon Trail and take the loop that way. It was a decent trail, but boy was it windy and super chilly. Not too many people on trail, so it wasn't too bad for the busiest trail in the Tucsons. We hit the top and didn't stay too long due to the wind and chill. Headed down the Hugh Norris trail, and when we got to the Sendero Esperanza Trail, we unfortunately decided incorrectly and went the wrong way. We went all the way down the hill, and we were wondering why we were still headed north instead of south to the parking lot. We got to the Dobe Wash junction and looked at the map and realized we goofed, so turned around and headed back up the hill to the junction to go the correct way. Eh, it gave us a little bit more mileage and ele, so what? :lol: The Hugh Norris and Sendero Esperanza trails were the most manicured trails I've ever seen out there in the Tucsons. Wow! And there was a trail crew out there doing more work. I felt like I was in a totally different park! Overall, it was a nice day, and the biggest bonus - NO bees!!!!! :D

Brrrrrr........it was cold, but super nice and sunny! Saw 2 mule deer and played leap frog with a couple mountain bikers. We mostly jogged faster than the one could ride. And we took it really easy today and went slow to save my hamstring! :lol:

Tug and I headed over the the Catalinas to hike instead of jog today. Trying to give my hammy a break before the event on Saturday. We had the parking lot and the entire trail to ourselves. I guess the cold kept people away, but I was totally warmed up after a few minutes on trail, and only put my fleece back over my wool shirt after we were at 'the end of the Bobat Doag trail' (that sign cracks me up) and the breeze picked up. We saw 3 whitetail deer and a red tail hawk while out there, that was our only company! We quickly made it back to the car, and I figured since we were all the way over there, we had to go check out the snow. Unfortunately the ski valley isn't open due to some downed trees from the last storm, but I at least wanted to go look at the snow since I've never seen the Catalinas up close with snow on them. We were denied going up the ski valley road :( , but we made it to Summerhaven and took lots of pics. We got out a couple times, and surprisingly it didn't seem that cold, despite the 20 something degree temps! What a beautiful day to get out and hike and explore the snow!

We had the entire parking lot to ourselves and the entire preserve to ourselves, it was amazing! It only spit on us a little in the beginning. Otherwise, it was just about perfect out there - beautiful dancing water droplets on everything, and all the plants and cacti were all smiling and waving at us as we jogged by! Everything is so happy and full of water! Didn't even carry a leash for Tug since there was absolutely no one else around! Even when we got done and back to the parking lot - NO ONE!

Lee wanted to bring his dog Annie on our hike, so we headed for Brown Mtn Loop. Haven't been there in a year. Everything was glistening still with drops of rain (or dew maybe?) and was SUPER lush and awesome!!!! Again, my favorite desert is over there in the Tucsons - it's all so green right now!!!!! It was really hard not to trail run a lot of that, but Lee isn't a runner, so we hesitantly walked. :lol:

Had a couple old ladies ask us if we knew that dogs weren't allowed in that area. It's confusing, because some areas specifically say no dogs, but this one doesn't, and I've seen many people with dogs there. I have also never seen any rangers there, as it's not a super popular hike. I've never had anyone comment on having Tug there either until today. They claimed to be park volunteers and said they wanted to warn us because there are rangers around.....hmmmmmm.......

Mark joined us again on his MTB, :y: Tug and I didn't have as much umph as last time, but I think it was a bit warmer, and the sun was shining, whereas we had clouds last time. They promised rain, and it didn't come yet, so we hit the trails to get a good jaunt in before it actually did come. The parking lot was PACKED! I was a little concerned about the trails, but that's the beauty of that place, a lot of spread out trails. It wasn't nearly as busy once out there as the parking lot was full. I think we hit the perfect time, since when we got back, the parking lot had emptied by 50%. Man I love it out there! Such lush desert!

Wanted to check this section of the trail out for the Oracle Rumble to decide if I want to switch to the 50K from the 1/2 marathon. As soon as I saw the area, it made my decision - NOPE! :lol: I recruited Mike and Lee to come along for the company, and we just hiked to the gate and back. It seems like it's pretty much all the same after that, so we headed back. All drab, brown, prickly, non-scenic desert. We had a big bull giving us the stink eye who was directly in the trail, so we had to cut trail a bit to go around him. Other than that, it was completely non-eventful, except for pulling jumping cholla out of poor Tug's feet a couple times, and dodging overgrown catclaw in the trail. I think I'll save my 1st 50K for somewhere gorgeous, like the Gorge or somewhere green and awe-inspiring! :D

My friend Julie wanted to summit Cat Mountain, so I figured why not since I was already scratched up to heck from yesterday's scramble! :lol: I downloaded Nick's track, but needless to say, we didn't quite follow it. It's kinda PYOR on that trek. Luckily we found some cairns on the way back down, because there was one section that I did NOT want to downclimb that we climbed up at some cliffs. It was quite warm when we got to the top, so we didn't stay too long. As we were pondering our route down, a bee that had been stalking me for quite a ways up stung me for no reason. And people wonder why I hate bees. :x Have a huge welt on the shoulder blade now. Also rolled my ankle pretty stinking hard at the top just starting down. Thank God for ankles of steel!!!! :sweat:

What a fun day! I got completely shredded on this mostly bushwhacking trek into Breakfast Canyon. We headed up the tram road for about a mile and a quarter, then headed into a wash right off of Rattlesnake Trail. The rest of the time we were dodging prickly stuff and scrambling around and up. Rested at the top for a lunch break, then headed back down down down the other side of the canyon to the tram stop #8. I find the road to be boring, so I convinced 3 others to take the Phoneline back with me. Great group of peeps and a beautiful canyon with quite a bit of water and pools. I didn't take any photos because the guy leading the hike was hauling buns, no time to stop and shoot. :) I think everyone bled on this hike. I look like I got in a fight with 11 cats!
