It was great to leave 108 degrees in Phoenix to do this hike.....74 degrees at the trailhead...NICE!

This is a beautiful hike, with a variety of flora as you ascend up to the inner basin.

Great lung buster! Good training for the Grand Canyon I figure. We had a beautiful, clear day in the 60's and visibility was excellent from the white, cool peak. Sure was a bit of a drive back there, but it was worth it!

Did this hike a couple years ago and remember that it was a good one, so we decided to give it another go. Drive time from Fountain Hills was a little over an hour with rain on our windshield. We had our raingear with but luckily did not need it today. The last time we did the hike, we went in a clock-wise direction in order to finish with the creek walk. Since it was warmer then it was a nice reward after doing the skunk tank portion to end up at the creek and soak our feet. We went counter-clockwise this time out. Today was interesting as we faced the possibility of rain with a temperature of only 42 degrees. This made for a nice "misty cool" hike along the creek. As we started to climb up the skunk tank loop from the creek the sun popped out to warm us up a little from the cool wind in our face. As I worked my way up to the ridge I began to regret those extra pounds I'm still dragging around...but the views from the top are excellent. On the way back down to finish up the hike there are areas of loose rock but for the most part the trail was in good shape. I highly recommend the hike in either direction.

MCO Properties is already not well received in this town, if they really want to start enforcing the no trespassing issue with hikers that only want to gain access to Dixie Mine Trail they will only run into more negativity problems...

I keep expecting this hike to get easier everytime I do it but it never does. I went up with a group of co-workers and even with plenty of fore-warning, everyone agreed the hike was a lot harder than they had anticipated. In the end, we all made it to the top and, with the beautiful weather, it turned out to be a pleasant, albiet leg burning, heartpounding slog.

Took the trail in a counter-clockwise direction which gives great views to the north north east as you come over the pass. This hike is recommended if you don't have a lot of time to get out of the city for other hikes or if you have visitors in town.

In need of a calorie burner, so I headed off to Thompson Peak to see how fast I could do it, no picture taking, no break on top, but also no running allowed. From the end of Golden Eagle up to first pavement-60 minutes; from first pavement to the top-32 minutes; 3 minute break on top; from top down to first pavement 20 minutes (including a stop to check out a cool seven legged tarantula) and from first pavement back to Golden Eagle and the car-61 minutes. HEY ! under 3 hours! Considering our last trip took over 4 hours I feel like I really accomplished something.

This hike is in my own back yard but haven't done it in a couple years. MCO Properties is starting to do some work back at the end of Golden Eagle Drive and have put up an irritating chain link fence that you have to walk around now to get on the road down to the trailhead. Just stay to the right on -past the water tank on the hill and you will see the trailhead after a couple hundred yards. By the way, don't forget to bring a dollar for entrance to the park. We started about 9:30 am on a Sunday and saw three people the entire trip. The Dixie Mine trail up to the access road is in good shape and some great views of the mountains and surrounding topography. Once you get up to the paved part you'll be in for a little heart pounding - sraight up the mountian - hiking, so be prepared (and in shape!) The views from the top are incredible, especially on a clear day. The wind can be cold during the winter months so bring along a wind breaker or it could get a bit uncomfortable.

It's a good hike if you want to burn some calories...I weighed myself before and after and dropped an amazing 4 lbs. !

I decided to take the loop in a clockwise direction and initially thought the hike was just going to be another stroll through the sonoran desert. You know, the usual saguaro, cholla and palo verde that we often take for granted. But of course(as I tend to do) I wound up getting absorbed in the little things like the wide variety of butterflies, the different chirps of birds and the otherwise deafening silence of the desert on a fall afternoon. As I dropped down off Black Mesa another scene jumped up and slapped me in the face. The surrounding hills opened up to Boulder Canyon and an awe inspiring view of Weaver's Needle. I've seen "the needle" up close before but from Freemont Saddle on the other side. Even in the flat light of mid afternoon the colors and beauty of the monolith and the surrounding rock outcroppings were awesome. As I worked my way down into the canyon and back out on Dutchman's Trail the wiews around me were great. I would recommend this hike to anyone but be forewarned, I think the listed distance is a little short. Sure felt like more than 8.5 miles. Take plenty of water and watch your step. There are plenty of opportunities to twist an ankle while you are busy looking at the natural beauty of this incredible area.

Heard so much about this hike, decided to give it a try. We got to the trailhead at about 9:15 on a Sunday and was still plenty of parking. In fact we didn't see that many people on the trail until the last mile coming back. I expected it to be much busier on a hot summer day. Although we were warned that our feet would get wet, the water level was low enough that we didn't get wet once.

The views and tranquility of the hike were fantastic. The size of some of the pine trees were quite impressive. I would have to say that this is one of the most spectacular hikes in all of Arizona. I am eager to do the hike in the other seasons as well to get different perspectives. Winter with new fallen snow must be incredible.

If you haven't done this hike yet...ya gotta do it. You will not be disappointed! And don't forget to bring your camera...like I did! :x

We kinda missed the hike here, but ended up with a nice cool off without the slide rock crowds. We drove down the Upper Red rock Loop Road and ended up in the Crescent Moon Picnic Area...which by the way is a day use area so your Red Rock Pass is NO GOOD! Seven bucks to get in. Oh well. Any way nice place to cool off for the afternoon and have a little picnic. Really enjoyed the views from there. If you are with someone who isn't too keen on hiking, it is a great place to leave them as you head up cathedral rock !

This was an excellent hike as an introduction to the red rocks area with my brother from Ohio. We did the trip counter-clockwise and really got some nice views of cathedral rock and other prominent landmarks in the area. I've done this trip once before and did it clockwise...have to say I enjoyed it more counter. The cacti were in full bloom this day as were many other flowers. After the hike we drove up through Oak Creek canyon into Flagstaff for lunch before heading back down to Phoenix. Real nice day-trip if you have someone from out-of-town!

Decided to make a mother's Day group hike with some friends and the kids (dogs too)and had a great time. Got a little warm towards the end as the heat began to rise, a reminder to start scheduling hikes in the high country. This hike has great vistas and excellent desert flora along the way. (See pics above) Look forward to doing it again (next winter!)

Marina (my wife) and I did this hike in January with questionable skies overhead. We decided to just do the heart of rocks from the Visitors center which totaled about 7.1 miles. Very rewarding and a great workout. My mom lives in the area so we get to hike the Chiricahua more often and I never tire of the facinating rock formation payoff at the top! An added bonus on this particular trip was getting caught on the way back in a drenching downpour about 1/2 mile from the visitors center.
