Umpteenth time hiking this trail, but first time seeing it since the Siphon Fire. :( There was lots of water near Hackberry Spring but it was a shame all the shady camping spots are gone.

Highlights were seeing a double rainbow and my first Sonoran desert tortoise IRL at First Water Creek.

Wow, Ford Canyon had great views and entertaining rock scrambling. My first thought was, "Why haven't I done this trail before?". This route transitions between Sonoran desert and high desert grassy hills towards the intersection with Willow Canyon. No water at Willow Spring but it was still a great spot for lunch.

Having driven by Dromedary Peak so many times, I wanted to see it up close.

After parking just off the highway, I followed a deep wash for a bit before turning south and bushwacking towards the saddle. It was easy hiking over a small hill until reaching the slopes of the peak. I knew the north side of the peak was covered in grass after seeing it from the highway, but it was higher than expected up close, knee-high in many spots. Avoiding the tall grass was not possible - it covered the entire side of the peak with only the occasional rock 'island' in between. The hike to the top was slow going while trying to find the best route, trudging through the grass, and hoping nothing was lurking underneath.

Nice views from the top - the Superstitions to the north and endless desert to the south. I took a short break at the top before some bees took an interest and encouraged me to keep going.

The south side of the peak was the opposite - zero grass, just cactus and the usual Sonoran foliage plus a bunch of baseball-sized rocks. The way down also required making each step deliberate to avoid slipping. After reaching the bottom, I cut through two washes to reach a dirt road, then turned east. I decided to stop and see the windmill that was marked on the topo map, which was next to a large abandoned corral. I would be curious to check out the mining prospects that are marked to the south-east of the windmill at a later date.

After looking around, I continued following the road uphill back towards the car. This section of road was extremely rough, and I wouldn't want to try driving it. The rest of the hike back to the car was enjoyable in the isolation and desert silence. I only saw one person the entire hike near the water tank towards the end of my route - he was pulled off the side of the dirt road and was watching the side of Dromedary Peak with hunting binoculars. Made it back to the car, ate a sandwich, and headed home.

Cool area, and it seemed you could explore far to the south on foot fairly easily by taking the numerous dirt roads. Despite being close to the highway, it felt like a very remote place.

Routescout recorded 9.9 miles rather than the listed 8.9. The views when dropping into Barkley Basin were fantastic. Tried to find water at Crystal Spring but it was bone dry.

A nice trail with views of Show Low Lake and the surrounding area. The hike started a little warm as there was full sun and not much shade along the edges of the mesa. This changed once we began hiking through the middle of the mesa and were treated to tall ponderosa pines, some cloud cover and a light drizzle. A great trail for cool or cloudy days.

We intended to do a larger loop but decided to cut it short and do some off-trail hiking. There are several very deep arroyos in this section between the Pemberton and Tonto Tank trails, which made for fun problem solving to get around or through them. I would like to go back and explore them at some point. While walking through a wash, we ruined a snake's lunch after stepping near some brush - a rabbit ran one direction and a massive rattlesnake went the other. Watch your step out there.

An out-and-back hike through Slovenia's Logar Valley. We started at Logajeva Lipa (Logar's Linden) and traversed most of the length of the valley, ending at Slap Rinka (Rinka Waterfall). This was pristine Alpine hiking with occasional beer stops.

Decided to spend the weekend camping on Big Bug Mesa. We were lucky enough to see the superbloom occurring on Perry Mesa while driving north from Phoenix. Before leaving the pavement, we stopped at Gilligan’s Mayer Market for some last minute supplies. They have just about everything you might need for a camping trip, and I'm glad to know it's there for future trips to the area.

From the highway, we took Poland Road up to Big Bug Mesa, passing through the hamlet of Breezy Pines on the way. Lots of water was flowing in all the canyons and creeks along the way. The road was well maintained. Upon reaching Five Corners, we saw patches of snow still remained on Mount Union and the surrounding peaks. A striking difference in environment compared to high desert Mayer, only 10 miles down the road below.

The road on top of Big Bug Mesa was decent, but I can see how it would turn awful after a heavy rain, as I read in other reports. After setting up camp, we went on an off-trail hike.

The rockier edge of the mesa quickly gives way to more pleasant hiking when you move towards the interior. The beautiful forest of widely-spaced ponderosa pine is occasionally broken by small clearings. We saw a large herd of deer at one point.

Many of the trees were spraypainted and it appears that logging will occur in the near future, although I wasn't able to find any details about this online.

Eventually we turned south to check out Davis Spring Number Two. The wash/creek that the spring lies in was flowing with a good amount of nice clear water. The spring itself was beautiful and looked very likely to continue flowing even when the wash is dry, or at least have some water stored in the pools. There was one deep pool that would have made a great swimming hole. We picked up about 15 beer cans from the reprobates who used the campsite near the spring last, then made our way back to our camp.

It was a beautiful night camping with lots of stars and listening to Coast to Coast AM around the fire. I look forward to coming back to Big Bug Mesa in the future.

Spent a weekend camping at Oak Flat campground. Noticed that there isn't a route yet from the campground to Devils/Gaan canyon, so I decided to record one.

The route from the campground to the edge of the canyon is all dirt roads, making for an easy hike. I wouldn't recommend driving it with a passenger car, however. The trail into the canyon is also easy to follow and not too steep.

The bottom of the canyon is pretty thick with foliage, so I didn't go much further, but there are likely unofficial trails in there somewhere. After getting out of the canyon, we meandered around Oak Flat until we wound up at the campground.

Overall a pleasant hike with great views. I'd like to explore this canyon more sometime.

Decided to camp at Ashurst lake for the weekend, arriving around 11pm on Friday night. Friday night was a pleasant temperature with little wind.

After waking up Saturday, we took a ~8 mile off-trail hike from the campground to see nearby Indian Lake and Ducksnest Lake in a big loop. Although both lakes were dry, it was a nice hike. Stormy skies above the volcanic prairie with mountains around made for a beautiful and awesome backdrop. We were also lucky enough to see a herd of Antelope from a distance near Ducksnest Lake. Saturday evening was colder and quite a bit windier, but comfortable with a fire.

Sunday morning gave us a really nice surprise, with a layer of snow all around us. Waking up to the snow among the junipers next to the lake was great. After a muddy packing-up, we hit the road and drove back to Phoenix through Sedona. The rain and mist in the red rocks was a highlight of the drive home.

Was in the area this weekend, and decided to do this loop the morning of St. Patty's day. Really enjoyable hike, with lots packed in to less than 6 miles. After starting from the car, you reach the waterfall pretty quickly. The recent rains made the entire trail extremely lush and the falls were going strong.

After leaving the waterfall, the trail takes you to the ridge on the side of the mountain. The fog rolled in, providing some amazing views and the sensation you're hiking above the clouds. Eventually the trail continues to climb toward Goat Rock. Spotted some deer around this area.

The crazy weather continued, and it started hailing for the last several miles back to the car. Between the trees, falls, wildlife, and rock formations, I really enjoyed this trail.

After hiking up to the basin a number of times, I finally decided to give flatiron an attempt. Lessons learned:
-Take the far right canyon per the hike description, but make sure to stay to the left within this canyon. After taking a wrong turn and veering toward the right, I hiked up pretty far before getting stuck and having to turn around.
-When you get to the final wall just before the top, I found it easier to take a route just to the left.

Glad to have finally completed this hike - a perfect way to spend a Saturday.
