We planned this trip to Monterrey about 4 months in advance. The cheapest way to put it together was to drive to the Tijuana airport and park on the US side in San Diego. We purchased flights on Volaris for about 160-180.00 round trip and took a redeye flight. After discussing the trip with many guide companies we settled with Geo Aventura. We feel that we hit the jackpot with this company, our guides, gear, photos, private cabin with pillows!! and running water, local chefs cooking 3 meals a day, unlimited bottled water, beer, wine and all that was included in our package deal for just over 300.00!
It was such a rare treat to have a bed to sleep in after a long day of adventuring and the hot shower was out of this world! We never go on trip where others do all of the cooking for us and carry all of the gear so it really was an adventure heaven in paradise. We had some other friends doing the exact same trip in a slightly different order with longer days and a different guide company. We heard they were not living in luxury and had what was close to a real feces show because of the guide company they selected in order to save about 40 bucks a person. We hope to make a return trip soon, it was that good!

Itinerary
Day 1 Redeye flight, Ruta Vertigo and travel to the remote community of Potrero Redondo.
Day 2 Matacanes Canyon
Day 3 Chipitin (with a horseback ride out and back to our private cabin)
Day 4 Hydrophobia (I had to sit out due to an itsy bitsy injury)
Day 5 Travel back to Monterrey and stay at an airport hotel
Day 6 Fly to San Diego & Drive home (call the sheriff to un-report myself as a missing person--long story)

Basia's goal for 2015 was to get to the top of MY mountain (which is not exactly Silly Mountain). Equipped with brand-new-super-cool-anti-cactus hiking boots, a bag of gold fish crackers, some water and a rainbow chameleon we made it! Looking forward to helping her reach more goals in 2016!

I think this was my first backpack in about 10 months. It was great to see this area all cleaned up and looking good. We arrived Friday night late with headlamps, not a creature was stirring....except massive daddy longlegs. We made a "fun-do" fondue as a midnight snack and spent Saturday enjoying the creek and the hike out. Ran over to the Waterfall hike afterwards and really loved that area.

Ha, this 2700 feet is hard work!

So close...........just didn't have the motivation, strength or stamina to make it for the last uphill push to reach the planned destination.....(yet).

It was a very slow trip up Carney and the most elevation I've done in a long, long time. It was slow because I was slow. I used every opportunity to visit (and rest) with others coming down the trail. The views were more stunning than I remembered, how could I forget? I stretched out and got comfy leaning against a few boulders while enjoying the peaceful surroundings & amazing scenery on the Ridgeline while Eric reluctantly pushed on without me.

This hike was a fine reminder of how far I have to go still to regain all that has been lost while I've been lounging on the couch............oh, how I have missed the burn! One step/hike at a time.

Can't wait to do it again......soon......as soon as this quad pain goes away.

The Emerald Pools part of this trip has been on my "to do" list for a long time. I've been down to the LCRG a few times but this was by far the best way to do the trip.

The hike out is ridiculous! even more so with canyoneering gear.

Many of these pics were taken by Cody Rients and shared with permission.

Great fun! Certainly the best route to the LCRG by far. The guys on this trip were bad mambo-jamba's = hardcore strong. Thanks for the invite and carrying all the ropes....one day I hope to be strong like them. ;) Also grateful to those that pioneered this sweet route!

And as all good trips go, can't come home without a souvenir of some sort....picked up a (another) staph infection in my leg..... :-({|= hoping it won't take 208 antibiotics to clear up. :scared:

Nice day!
2nd time in this canyon. Did the top or "stunt" rappel this time. Never heard that term before.

We went up Carney and took a slightly different route for the exit out of the Roost. We opted to rap through the canyon. There were 3 raps with the longest being 240 feet. We had a joyous scramble through the kind and loving catclaw covered wash after sunset. At some point while in the pitch black darkness of night Brian said we should exit the wash and cut over to hit the trail....so we did. I'm always amazed by Vaporman's awesome navigational skills during the day and at night. Fun trip!

Broke in the new 200 foot static rope that I won in a photo contest! The downside to owning your own rope is having to carry it ;)

Needed to get the ankle out doing some scrambling, elevation and down climbing without the hiking stick. Didn't break any speed records but was thankful for George's patient company on this trek.

We spent some time at the crash site. I know the young lady that had been the live-in nanny for these children. Such a tragic accident.

Another short canyon with an ankle friendly approach in the Tortilla Flat Vortex area. Found a sweet little gypsy lady in a cave kind of high up humming with beads and candles that came out to chat with us. She offered her words of wisdom for the exit.

This canyon, located near Tortilla Flat, was recently pioneered and named Hose Canyon due to the massive amounts of garden hose in it. No idea how all of the garden hose got into this canyon. It wasn't even all that rotted. Perhaps someone was attempting to expedite the shaping of the canyon?? Ho Ho!

We hauled out as much as we could gather and carry, maybe 100 feet. We were the second group (I believe)to remove some of the hose, there is more left. I suppose we can amend the canyon's name to something more appropriate once all the garden hose is successfully removed....Chicken Wire Canyon might be a good second choice!

Tough exit to navigate in the dark! Brian totally rocked it :)

Merry Christmas to all of my HAZ friends :GB:

I got permission from the physical therapist to take the boot off for a short "walk around the block". I live close to this trailhead so I applied the "around the block" concept here. I only used a cane (aka hiking pole) for part of the trip. The hike down left my ankle feeling a bit fatigued but nothing too bad.

It was a beautiful day and I was thankful to have George along for company and assistance if needed.

The days are numbered for this pretty little canyon. We wanted to get a trip in before this gem is lost for good. The water temps were good but we still wore our wetsuits...never know when the tables will turn and we might be in the water longer than expected. This was one of those days.

I slipped off the slick rock, smacked the rock with my hip and foot before bouncing into the water like a rag doll for a total distance of approx. 15 feet. Thankfully I had my pack on which provided a decent amount of flotation. My body was apparently stunned or in shock because I was unable to move anything except my arms. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait long before two of my friends jumped in and pulled me out of the water. After a few minutes of laying on the rock I started feeling some pain........which made me really happy....considering the alternative. I've got one busy angel looking after me.

Long story short, they wrapped my foot, shoved it back inside the boot and some how I managed the slow hike out with the help of the others carrying my gear and helping me up and down boulders. I think it took us 3 hours but we made it before dark.

Turns out I tore 4 ligaments in my foot --- 2 of those are complete tears and will require surgery the others are moderate and mild. I imagine the road to recovery will be a long one. I plan to busy myself with knitting and quilting projects. Be sure to get your Christmas orders in soon :D
