Arrived at the boat launch and a Bald Eagle chick was sitting in a tree across the lake, Whilst having lunch we saw the parents and another chick circle above.
We only went around the lake hence the 3.5 miles. We seemed to start hiking as everybody else left because of the darkening skies. We got around the lake and didn't see rain until we got to Payson. A good trail right around the lake.

We saw an Osprey nest with chick and parents waching over it, and an intruding Osprey being chased away when it got too close. Very quiet hike, 1 canoe on lake and 5 fishing groups.

Never saw anyone,saw a couple of deer near the end. Storm close most of the hike, but never rained on us.The trail seems to meander the whole loop.

The road in was wet in few spots but easily passed. We watched the storm going over Humphries and we were 2 minutes from the top of Slate Mountain when had to shelter on the opposite side to the storm for 30 minutes as it passed.The whole time we could see the Painted Desert in the sunshine, It rained really heavily. The trail down was ok when wet as it seemed to be gravel but the trailhead was muddy, very sticky mud. Going out to the road was slow and slippery. Looking at Humphries going the 180 we could see that it looked like it had snow on it, IN JULY.

I put two pieces of 3x2 on the jeep that we had and rented. And got a Canadian Canoe from Summit Divers in Flagstaff for the day and went to Upper Lake Mary and put in at the narrows. (Fee $6)
There were more Ospreys than people at the lake. Strange to us as Ospreys in Scotland are territorial and miles apart.
We also saw what we hope was a Bald Eagle.
We left at lunchtime as the wind got up and the storm cloud came in.
To see the birds was well worth the rental fee of $50.

We spotted our Jeep at Shultz Tank with the help from a very kind gentleman that we met the day before, I was worried about his car getting damaged on the road but every thing was ok. The hike was quiet we only met three people.The grasshoppers?? were very loud, taking off making a clicking noise for 5 to 10 seconds then landing. We saw a lot of deer. Finding Shultz Tank was easy as it was well sign posted, but the sign at the start says 6.8 miles and the sign at the end says 2.4 to Kachina making it 7.4 miles. The GPS said 7.6 miles

We did this hike as part of a Forest Service led hike with Steve & Lois Hirst. The hike was very informative. The group size was about 14 and we met some very intresting people, one of whom offered to shuttle our car the next day.
We found out a lot about flora and the history of the site on this trip and would recommend going on the F.S. trip.

We started at the first Woodchute parking area hence the extra milage, we could have driven up to the trailhead easily as the road was good. The first two miles there were thousands of grasshoppers. we came across fresh bear tracks and I made a print of my size 10s to show the size. At Turkey tank we saw a hawk. We never saw anyone all day and thought that going anti-clock ways was the best way.

One of our favourite hikes once past the "normal stop" it is stunning. Had lunch at around 5 mile point. The water was much lower than previous trips and a lot warmer.

This is one that we try to fit in when we are in Sedona. The water was lower and warmer than we have had before. We did 5.4 miles into the canyon, it was very busy to the place where most stop. They wonder why you are putting on water shoes and don't realise that the best of the canyan is beyond that point. It rained just as we were changing our shoes back on the return journey and we hardly saw a sole on the way out, and lot more wildlife.

The route in on FR693 splits into FR693B then back to FR693. We parked at the junction of FR81E and FR693 and hiked to the Tramway Trail #32. The views going down the Tramway Trail were brilliant. We certainly used our poles and hands in some places on the steep hike down to West Clear Creek. Finding the trail down river at the time of year when everything has grown to it's tallest can be difficult, Also there are many trails from people exploring or getting to the water. I found that the distance was 7.4 miles almost the same as Cerebellum's GPS trail. My GPS kept losing signal so the track along the creek is a guess. There is no sign to indicate the Maxwell Trail so keep a good lookout for the trail! Going back up the Maxwell Trail was not so steep

The first time that we have been hiking around a lake in Arizona. This is a very nice hike, we went clock wise from the parking area and across the dam, The far side of the lake the track can be up and down and faint.
We saw our first Crawdads and they were having a feast on a dead fish.

It was busy and noisy as it was a Saturday this was expected.

After hiking Bear Canyon Lake We decided to go round Wood Canyon Lake that day as well. Woods has a better defined trail round it and we met more hikers going around.
The lakeside shop rents the small boats with the electric outboards and they seemed to be every where on the lake, with various degrees of skill driving them. One boat was going backwards down the lake at full speed, until someone was good enough to show him that the pointy bit goes forward and they seemed to get on better then.Of all the boats that we saw only the very small children had any bouyancy aids on.
Back to the hike, We found that just going round the lake is only 3.5 miles but there is plenty to see and be entertained by. Having an Ice cream from the shop and sitting lake side is a good way to finish.

We were moving on from the area that day and had a couple of hours to kill before heading down to Payson so we decided to do Wire Pass to the junction with Buckskin Gulch as it had been a few years since we had done it before. There seemed to be a few more places with a drop of a couple of feet than we remembered but nothing that could not be handled easily. When you enter the slot the temperature drops and feels more comfortable.
When we reached Buckskin Gulch it was totally dry and we carried on down the Gulch.I wish we had set up a trip to the end as the walking conditions were very good and there seemed to be something better to see round each corner. We saw a dead bat and a live Tarantula. With time against us we reluctantly turned around and headed back.

Back in Hackberry Canyon again!This time we went a bit further up than we had been before. There were hundreds of little frogs and we hoped to see other wild life but this trip there was none.We saw no one else which was good.

We went to Cardiac Canyon & Canyon X with Ryan as a guide. There was only the two of us and Ryan. I would give anyone the "tip" of tightening their belt as if you fall back and stop going down the slide in the sand gets everywhere - I know from experience.
Ryan let us go anywhere we wanted to at our leisure and was never bothered about the time.
We came across a snake that we almost stood on as we were looking about the canyon.
The packed lunch was good and had plenty in it.Overall we really enjoyed the tour.
