Wow, what a view. Wow, what an arch! We did not realize we would see it from down the Ave Champs-Elysee later as we never knew where we were going until we more or less got there, ha!

Inauguration a quiet affair: Louis-Philippe, “King of the French” had escaped an assassination attempt a month earlier.

Napoleon decided on the project after winning the battle of Austerlitz…
The design was inspired by the triumphal arches of ancient Rome. It is decorated with sculptures celebrating French soldiers and French victories. After the First World War, the building took on the role of monument to soldiers who had died in combat, and is now home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame.
